Samsung Galaxy S7 photos from the camera. How to shoot Samsung Galaxy S7

We have made a review of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge especially for you. We can say with confidence that this gadget deserves your attention.

The Galaxy S6 smartphone was a triumph for Samsung in 2015. It came after two years of mediocre S-series flagships, offering two smartphones that could challenge Apple's iPhone models. For 2016, Samsung has chosen an evolutionary development of these devices with the Galaxy S7 and the larger curved Galaxy S7 Edge. Both are similar to last year's versions, but there are differences inside that attract the most attention.

Detailed review of Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

Main technical characteristics:

  • Screen: 5.5 inches, resolution 2560 x 1440, 534 ppi
  • Cameras: front 5 MP, rear 12 MP
  • CPU: Exynos 8890 Octa and 4GB RAM
  • Storage: 32 GB and microSD memory cards up to 200 GB
  • Operating system: Android 6.0 Marshmallow with TouchWiz UI shell
  • Dimensions: 150.9 x 72.6 x 7.7 mm, weight 157 g
  • Color options: black, gold
  • Price: 49990 rubles (32 GB).

Design

Last year's S6 Edge had a curved screen, and its successor features the same. These curves are more of a design quirk than a practical or useful feature. Despite this, this screen looks great. The glass back also curves slightly to fit the shape of the aluminum body, making the device more comfortable to hold than the flat S6 Edge.

By expanding the screen to the very edges of the device, Samsung has created a model that is more compact than the iPhone 6S Plus. Both have a diagonal of 5.5 inches, but the iPhone is 7.3 mm longer, 5.3 mm wider and 25 g heavier. It's a noticeable difference and makes the iPhone seem bulky by comparison; It's also 0.4mm thinner, but the S7's curved edges make up for that.

One of the downsides of the S7's compact design is that the touch buttons are close to the user's hand. Often your thumb hits the multitasking button when your hand reaches across the entire screen. Otherwise, the ergonomics of the Galaxy S7 Edge are at a good level, the volume and power buttons located on the side are always within reach, the fingerprint scanner in the Home button responds to pressing from different angles.

The device is sold in black and gold cases, the latter is too shiny and the glare of the case distracts from the screen. These minor criticisms aside, from a design perspective the S7 Edge is a success, making the iPhone feel outdated. Developers will have to try to make the iPhone 7 look better.

Screen

Remaining unchanged from the Galaxy S6 Edge, the 5.5-inch screen is once again great. AMOLED technology produces bright and vibrant colors; The blacks are unusually deep, and the screen is bright enough to read in sunlight. The 2560 x 1440 resolution is twice that of the iPhone 6S Plus, but it's not noticeable in everyday use. But the extra pixels will come in handy when connecting the Samsung Gear VR virtual reality device.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Features, Performance and Software

This is where the Galaxy S7 Edge starts to differ from its predecessor, and two improvements make a big difference. It is waterproof and has a microSD card slot. The smartphone can be immersed in water to a depth of 1.5 m for half an hour; At the same time, there are no plugs for connectors or other external signs of moisture resistance. Memory cards will allow you to expand the internal memory of 32 GB, adding up to 200 GB. This feature has never been available on the iPhone, and against this background, the internal memory capacity of 16 GB looks frivolous.

Another improvement was the increase in battery capacity to 3600 mAh, which is 1000 mAh more than last year’s version; fast charging via USB and wireless is supported. The included charger charges your smartphone for 5 hours in 10 minutes. Autonomous operation lasts from a day to a day and a half.

The Always-On screen function when the device is locked constantly displays information such as time, date, battery level and unread notifications. It consumes approximately 0.8% charge per hour. Unfortunately, only Samsung's built-in apps are supported, so you won't see WhatsApp messages here.

Fast charging, large capacity, water resistance and memory cards will be useful to you every day. This is much more necessary than the stupid features of Samsung's flagships a few years ago, like tracking users' eye movements.

8-core processor and 4 GB memory

Samsung is often criticized for modifying Android with its TouchWiz shell. It is also available in the S7 Edge on top of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but the changes this time are minimal. Most Samsung apps can be disabled or ignored (but not uninstalled). Some app icons look a little childish, but otherwise TouchWiz and Android 6 work great and are a great alternative to Apple iOS.

What sets Samsung apart from other Android manufacturers is Upday, a news aggregator on the left side of the home screen. It can be configured to display news that interests you, and can be easily turned off if desired.

The 8-core Exynos processor and 4GB of memory allow apps to run super fast on the S7 Edge. The device never slows down, stutters or requires a reboot.

Side screen

Screen edges not only look interesting, but also have a couple of practical uses. You can place your smartphone with the screen facing up and see who is calling on the side, since calls from different subscribers can be displayed in different colors. A swipe on the side screen displays different panels with shortcuts to contacts and favorite applications, a compass, ruler, weather forecast and news headlines.

Camera

12 MP resolution, optical image stabilization and f/1.7 aperture make the rear camera one of the best in smartphones. Low-light images are especially good, even compared to the iPhone 6: high levels of detail, good color balance and no blur.

The camera shoots quite well with automatic settings, and the autofocus speed is impressive. There is also a manual shooting mode for those who understand this, Samsung also has a function reminiscent of Apple Live Photos, which records a 3-second video before taking a photo, there is even a mode for shooting food.

The 5MP front camera isn't as impressive, but it gets the job done. It handles taking photos that will go on Instagram, and there are a number of controls that will show your face and eyes in the best light.

Conclusion

Samsung has released the best smartphone of this year so far. The Galaxy S7 Edge improves on the S6 in every way. Now we will wait for the appearance of the HTC 10, iPhone 7 and LG G5 smartphones, which will not be easy to surpass the Samsung device.

The hardware looks and feels top notch, the screen is great, Samsung has improved the Android experience, and the camera is excellent. Add to this a curved screen, a waterproof case, memory cards and fast charging, and we see an almost ideal smartphone.

Ratings:

  • Screen: 9/10 – clear and bright, but too big for some
  • Camera: 9/10 - Rear camera is almost perfect, although front camera is not so good
  • Software: 8/10 - Samsung's best approach, TouchWiz is improved, but not comparable to pure Android in its simplicity
  • Design: 9/10 - Looks stunning, but can be unpleasant to hold in cold hands. If it falls, the glass in front and behind will most likely break. The front part is very distracting with glare.
  • Build quality: 9/10 - minus a point for fragile glass.
  • Total: 10/10 - almost perfect smartphone.

Pros:

  • Great design
  • Rear camera
  • Waterproof.

Cons:

  • Front camera
  • Screen size may be too large for some
  • High price

We hope that our review of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge helped you get to know this gadget better and you were able to determine for yourself whether you will buy it or not.

Especially for photo and video shooting. Historically, Apple smartphones have become very popular among photographers and amateur photographers (and, to be honest, most of the world’s population). But if previously Apple created truly unique and functional products, then after a close acquaintance with the Galaxy S7, I seriously thought about changing my phone.

I’ll say right away: I myself am also an Apple fan, I started with ancient desktops, then there was the MacBook Pro, then the Air. The family has an iPad and an iPad mini, and there are five iPhones between the three of them. Therefore, if it weren’t for my close acquaintance with the latest generation of Galaxy, the question of choosing the next smartphone would not have arisen for me. True, it’s not worth it even now: I confess, but I already bought myself an S7. However, enough background, I’ll tell you everything in order.

Backlight, fully automatic shooting mode

I remember how five or six years ago, when the first system cameras were just appearing, it was customary to call them “DSLR killers.” When I tested the new Samsung smartphone and its camera, the evidence of the final death of compacts became undeniable for me. Moreover, as far as I know, in the amateur segment, some manufacturers of cameras with interchangeable lenses are already feeling the pressure of smartphones. And this is not at all surprising.

The first thing I would like to mention is the increase in pixel compared to its predecessor, and not in the number of megapixels, as this happens most often! The second is the F1.7 aperture (on the iPhone F2.2), and the third is the use of Dual Pixel technology, which, thanks to the use of a double photodiode, makes focusing as fast and accurate as possible. In addition, in difficult shooting conditions, you can use the Pro mode by manually changing the shutter speed, aperture, ISO and white balance settings.

So, here are the main advantages because of which I bought myself a Galaxy S7 smartphone (without any discounts or bonuses, at the regular market price):

  1. As I already said, the main plus for me is the camera. It's really very cool (just don't compare the quality with full-length DSLRs)!
  2. The next most important point is dust and moisture protection (up to 30 minutes of operation at a depth of 1.5 meters).
  3. Possibility of using two SIM cards or one SIM card and mini SD (up to 200 GB).
  4. A special case with a bayonet mount for Samsung branded lenses (wide-angle and x2-zoom) will soon appear. And with a high probability of development of this line.
  5. Using a smartphone as a platform for Gear VR virtual reality glasses.

In addition, a powerful processor, fully customizable desktop tabs, a slightly larger and much higher quality display than the iPhone, the presence of a built-in image stabilizer, a more capacious battery and, according to the manufacturer, more durable glass.

Well, now about the minuses: the only thing I found was a easily soiled case, on which fingerprints remain. You can fix it by purchasing a cover.

Strangely, bokeh appears in the photo. Previously it was believed that this was a sign of fast lenses.

Next, I invite everyone to draw their own conclusions based on the photographs received. And in order to completely dispel the doubts of photographers, I will say that photographs can be easily printed in 45x30 cm format, and after certain manipulations in the editor, 60x40 cm prints also look quite decent. 60x40 cm from a smartphone! Samsung Galaxy S7; ISO-200; F/1.7; 1/13c; 4 mm.

An example of a photograph that is obtained at the time of shooting a video

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and its larger sibling, the S7 Edge, were shown off last night at a presentation at MWC. The new products are expectedly very interesting, stylish, high-quality, with an improved camera, and so on. There are already first impressions, results in AnTuTu and examples of photos from the built-in camera.

Instead of packaging, here is a photo of the box from the newest flagship. For now, we move on to the main part of our mini-review of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.

Design

The evolution according to Samsung is obvious. We didn't see anything new. The surfaces at both the front and back are now slightly rounded. The result is a now fashionable 2.5D effect. By the way, if in 2016 you release a smartphone without such glass, then I don’t even know... what are you even counting on?

The bright, pearlescent, iridescent surfaces of both devices are very easily soiled. In the demo area, next to each pair of new products, there was a specially trained person armed with a soft cloth. At every opportunity, he wiped down the devices. You will do the same thing when you buy yourself one of the devices.

In the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, the screen remains curved on both sides. It is still quite difficult to use in everyday life, since the display located on the sides is easily pressed with your fingers or palm. This is especially difficult during shooting - some photographing mode is constantly activated. Holding a smartphone without pressing the screen is problematic.

There will be four color options available: gold, white, silver and black. We make allowances for very high gloss, so the colors are not present in their pure form.

Hardware features

There are a few things to note here.

Firstly, protection from moisture and dust has returned to the S7. IP68 standard. Previously, only the S5 could boast of this function, and then with the caveat that the device was splash-proof. Now, company representatives have officially announced that the smartphone can be immersed in water for 30 minutes to a depth of 1.5 meters and nothing will happen to it.

Secondly, no USB Type-C for you. On the one hand, why is it needed at all, since USB 3.0 is still an extremely rare phenomenon. On the other hand, many manufacturers have already released a device that supports the new connector, but the most important innovator, Samsung, is dragging its feet.

Thirdly, this is the return of Micro SD cards. Users around the world were indignant about their absence and the Koreans fortunately took this moment into account. The card is installed in the SIM card slot instead of one of the SIM cards. Both, by the way, have the Nano SIM form factor.

Fourthly, it's time to look at Samsung Galaxy S7 specifications(model SM-G930):

  • RAM 4 GB
  • 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels (576 ppi)
  • front camera 5 MP

  • OS Android 6.0
  • Dimensions: 142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9 mm
  • weight 152 g
  • Navigation: GPS, A-GPS

The younger version differs from the older one uncritically. Essentially, these are two identical devices, just one has a smaller screen, while the other is larger and curved at the edges.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Specifications(model SM-G935) look like this:

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor (MSM8996) 2.2 GHz (64-bit)

  • Navigation: GPS, A-GPS

For games

Something has been done for gamers as well. No, I’m not talking about the monstrous performance, which has increased by 30 percent compared to its predecessor, although it, of course, plays an important role. Here's the thing. Samsung decided to create additional tools for players who play a lot, actively share their achievements on social networks, and so on.

To do this, smartphones come pre-installed with the Game launcher software node, which catalogs all the toys in one place, allows you to turn off all notifications during gaming, is responsible for recording video from the device screen, takes screenshots, and so on.

Software chips

The smartphone screen is now always on. More precisely, when it is not lying face down, or in a pocket, or in a bag. At other times, it will always display the most necessary information (time, date, calendar, missed notifications). However, the appearance of constantly glowing elements can be customized quite deeply, even to the point of setting different pictures.

In addition, the device interface, including wallpapers, screensavers and application icons, can be changed to your liking. All this is now official and available in the corresponding app store from Samsung.

For Edge, it is now possible to install up to 9 side panels with shortcuts, folders, contacts and other useful information. You can install up to 10 elements on each panel, so you may not have to navigate the menu.

Camera Samsung Galaxy S7

The most important advantage of the new flagships is, of course, the camera. The main module here is 12 megapixels. Not much, it would seem, but after you look at examples of photos from the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge camera, you will understand that the number of megapixels is completely unimportant.

Below are examples of pictures from the camera of a regular Samsung Galaxy S7. They are in no way inferior to the camera of their curved brother.

You can download all photos in original resolution in one archive using the link.

In the new generation of smartphones, the pixels have become larger (1.4 microns), and the aperture has decreased to an impressive f/1.7. Thus, the photos will turn out even brighter, and their quality will improve.

In addition, a special mode called Motion Panorama has appeared. The point is this. You are taking a panoramic photo. Everything is as usual: we move the smartphone lens from left to right. After this, you get something like a photograph, by moving it left or right you can view what happened while you were taking the picture. This is the cunning response from the Koreans to Apple's Live Photos.

The file can only be played on a smartphone. When transferring it to another device, the device offers to save it either as a photo or as a video.

Accessories

There are a lot of them. These include all kinds of cases (transparent and not so transparent, flips, batteries, etc.), and new portable batteries, and wireless chargers, and so on.

Let us now focus on only one accessory called Lens Cover. There are two versions in nature. Each differs in the lens it comes with: something similar to a “telephoto lens” or a wide-angle lens. They are only available for S7 Edge. At least there were no models for the regular Essemer at the stand.

First, examples of photos and videos from one lens.

Here are examples of content shot on the S7 Edge camera, already with a wide-angle lens.

Bottom line

The new items turned out to be very, very interesting. No revolution happened, but no one expected it. Performance has increased, the already very decent camera has improved, new goodies have appeared - these are the updated Galaxy S series smartphones.

The devices will go on sale starting March 11. Where and for what money - these questions have not yet been answered. I doubt that we should expect anything different from the cost of the iPhone 6S in the US, which, let me remind you, is $649 and $749 for the 6S and 6S Plus, respectively. In Europe, and as a result in our country, these are 749 and 849, only in euros.

The Korean company has done a good job of making the new Galaxy S7 Edge smartphone even more advanced and attractive compared to the previous model -. Considered as a whole, the new product retains all the features of the previous device (including the curved shape of the display, which now looks no less original).

So, manufacturers continued to develop the smartphone and took into account what users would like. The model again received support for memory cards, and its battery capacity has increased noticeably. You can save videos and photos to the card without any problems. The user will like the quality of photos that the Galaxy S7 takes with the main camera (it focuses instantly, including when shooting video of moving objects). The smartphone takes high-quality photographs even in poor lighting.

Pleasant surprises for the user

The consumer expected the battery life of the device to be maximized. When developing Samsung's Galaxy S7, they managed to achieve this: they made a larger battery - 3000 mAh. The power consumption of the processor and software also changed, and as a result, it became almost impossible to empty the non-removable battery during the day. The only exception is one option for using a smartphone - playing modern 3D titles (then the charge will only last for 5 hours). But if, for example, you watch a two-hour movie, only about 14% of the charge will be spent.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S7 charges quite quickly, especially when using the standard charger, which fills an empty battery in just an hour and a half. If you need to recharge your smartphone by 50%, then half an hour is enough. Our new product will be powered for less than two hours from the MacBook Pro USB port.

The smartphone screen is always on, and even when it is locked, notifications and the current time are visible on the display.

Clearly, the Galaxy S7 is one of the fastest smartphones of 2016.

Elegant design

It is worth saying that the camera of the new device now does not “rise” above the rear plane of the body (it has acquired smoother contours). In general, the model has become more rounded, and this impression is enhanced by the convexity of the “3D glass” (Gorilla Glass 4). A smartphone like this with a streamlined screen is simply pleasant to hold in your hands. The device has become thicker by a millimeter, slightly reducing its dimensions in length and width. Its weight has increased by 14 g, and now it looks more solid and dense. Weighing 157 g, the dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE are as follows: 72.6 x 150.9 x 7.7 mm.

The display diagonal measures 5.5 inches, and its high resolution ensures imperceptible color transitions. Users should like the wide viewing angles and huge brightness resource. It is advisable to pay attention to the fact that under direct sunlight, readability on the screen is maintained (for this there is an automatic adjustment that works very accurately). In addition, all images and videos appear three-dimensional. For the screen, you can select well-known modes - “Main”, “Adaptive Display”, “AMOLED Movie” and “AMOLED Photo”.

The aluminum edging frame is preserved (its width is small and equal to approximately 2.5–3 mm), the volume keys are located on the left side, and the power button is on the right. Below the speaker you can see the familiar Samsung logo. At the bottom there are touch keys - “back” and “menu”, and in the center there is a home key without the usual chrome edging, and it has a built-in fingerprint scanner. It's nice that the button layout suits both left- and right-handers. Describing the external design of the model, we will name three color options - strict black, gold (platinum) and silver (titanium).

Useful features

It is also worth mentioning the protection of the Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE from dust and moisture (IP68 standard). Note that there are no plugs on the ports here, since moisture protection is provided by the design features and the material from which the model is made. Consumers will appreciate such a gift, because the new smartphone can be used in the rain (it is permissible, for the sake of experimentation, even to place the device in water, after which it is advisable to turn it off to dry the ports).

The model is equipped with the following sensors: gyroscope, accelerometer, heart rate, light, proximity sensors, as well as geomagnetic, Hall sensor, barometer, fingerprint scanner. RAM - 4 GB, permanent memory - 32 GB. The smartphone runs on the Android 6.0.1 operating system and is equipped with Bluetooth 4.2 LE, GPS with A-GPS, NFC, ANT+, Glonass.

It should also be said about the built-in speaker of the Galaxy S7: it provides sound no less high quality than small tablets like the iPad Mini or smartphones equipped with front-facing stereo speakers. The device includes an adapter designed for fast charging (it supports a current of 2 A at 5 V, and at 9 V - 1.67 A). In addition, the set includes a micro-USB cable, as well as a USB adapter (with its help you can move data from device to device - Smart Switch function). So, if you need a high-quality smartphone, then the Galaxy S7 is an excellent candidate for such an acquisition.

The official price of the Galaxy S7 Edge in Russia is 59,990 rubles.

In February 2016, the new flagship Galaxy S7 was shown. Among other advantages, manufacturers focused on the camera of the new product, which claims to be the best in the world among mobile devices. One of the proprietary features was stated to be support for DualPixel technology, which allows focusing almost instantly.

The 2016 flagship is not only distinguished by its new focusing mechanism. The software itself has undergone changes, receiving advanced settings. The matrix is also different from the sensors in other smartphones. Let's try to learn about all the features of the photographic part and its capabilities in order.

The S7 does not use the standard shooting application from Android 6, but its own, which is part of the TouchWiz shell. It differs from the stock one in richer settings and a redesigned interface. Exactly the same application was used in the S6, S6 Edge and Note 5. At the top of the window there are buttons for settings, choosing the resolution and aspect ratio of the photo, flash and timer switches, HDR and an effects selection menu. At the bottom there is a focus/shutter button, photo/video and main/front camera switches, and an access icon to the photo gallery.

When selecting modes, you can use preset scenarios: auto, pro, selective focus, panoramic photo, animation, the ability to shoot stream directly in YouTube, slowmo slow motion, 360 degree virtual shooting, food photography and accelerated video shooting.

In Pro mode, manual adjustment becomes available. You can independently control white balance, ISO value, contrast, brightness, and shutter speed.

A distinctive feature of the smartphone, which brings it closer to full-fledged cameras, is the ability to save photos in RAW and JPG simultaneously. The “raw” data from the matrix can be processed in Photoshop or another professional editor. This allows you to adjust colors, sharpness, white balance and other image parameters in a quiet environment on your computer to achieve the highest possible quality.

Specifications

In the Galaxy S7, the photo module is based on a matrix with a resolution of 12 MP. Depending on the production batch and modification (and there are only about 20 of them, for different markets and networks), Bright Cell’s own S5K2L1 or Sony Exmor IMX260 module can be used. They have identical characteristics, and, very likely, are variations of the same model, produced at different enterprises.

Despite the modest 12 MP resolution by 2016 standards, the S7 camera has some advantages. First of all, these are the dimensions of the matrix: 1/2.5" - usually this diagonal corresponds to 16 MP. Due to the large matrix, the pixel was increased to 1.4 microns (instead of the standard 1.12 microns for S6). In addition, each of They are equipped with their own phase detection autofocus sensor. This technology, called Dual Pixel, was previously used only in SLR cameras.

The optics in the S7 have also changed in a positive way. The aperture (aperture) of the lens was improved from f/1.9 to f/1.7. Protection against a trembling hand is provided by a stabilization system. During the day there is practically no benefit from it (the shot is taken with an instantaneous shutter speed), but in the evening the system helps improve clarity. The flash looks somewhat modest: it consists of one diode emitting neutral white light.

There is practically no difference in the quality of photos from different matrices (Samsung and Sony) when viewed on a monitor. If you take a photo under the same conditions using different versions of the Galaxy S7, the comparison shows minimal difference. The only thing noticeable to the naked eye is that the Samsung sensor maintains color temperature a little better, while the frames from the Sony fade slightly into warm shades in the evening (the frames are slightly yellow). But the Japanese matrix shows slightly better detail, which is noticeable when the scale is increased to 100%. Below are two photographs taken on two Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphones with different matrices: at the top is a matrix from Samsung, at the bottom is from Sony.

How the camera shoots in different modes

Daytime landscape photography

The S7 shows excellent results in daytime photography. It provides an acceptable level of detail, even despite the reduced number of pixels. With the same zoom scale, photos from the S7 look more “angular” than those from the S6, but the contours of objects do not have the same blurring as their predecessor. It's difficult to immediately say which of the two evils is the lesser, but the footage from the S7 looks more attractive in this comparison.

Photo in good conditions

The dynamic range can be called rich (by the standards of mobile technology); in bright sunlight, the smartphone does not overexpose the sky, but it does not obscure the darker areas of the photo. But it is not ideal if there are enough bright details and light tones in the frame - signs of flare appear. For example, the glare of the sun, even if partially caught by the lens, blinds the corner of the frame, filling it with white. This is nitpicking (not shooting into the sun is one of the first rules of a novice photographer), but the fact remains a fact.

Shot with focus on the sky

A photo with the sun in the frame

Shot with focus on a tree

Daytime photography is not the Galaxy S7's trump card at all. And this is not because the matrix is bad (no, it takes excellent pictures). Simply, it is a smartphone camera, but nothing more. It will not be possible to examine every leaf of a tree standing a couple of tens of meters away. Photos from some Meizu, Xiaomi for 200 dollars, or Samsung for 250 will look the same on the monitor screen. Excellent lighting conditions allow any more or less normal matrix to open up, reducing competition to a minimum.

Portrait photography and close-ups

Not long ago, Xiaomi introduced the Redmi Pro camera phone, equipped with two matrices. The presentation focused on the magnificent bokeh effect (blurring the background and sharp focus on the foreground). The smartphone was even compared to a professional Canon DSLR for 4 thousand dollars to emphasize the “coolness” of the new product. So, S7 can do the same without any second matrix. Near focus works very clearly, portrait photography is its strong point. Beautifully blurring the background, emphasizing the contrast, is not a problem at all.

Focus on a close subject and blur the background

When shooting portraits from a couple of meters away, the sensor capabilities are enough to receive most of the reflected light. In such conditions, the sensor practically does not lather the skin on the face and transmits its details. If you use a tripod and set a high shutter speed, the shots will turn out great. The Samsung Galaxy S7 copes well with close-up photography and portraits. In this mode, the benefits become more noticeable.

Shooting at dusk

In low light conditions (100-1000 Lux, such as in cloudy weather or in a building), the advantages of the camera become more obvious. The decent size of the sensor captures more light, making the details of objects appear more clearly. The flash mentioned above, despite only one LED, does its job conscientiously. Objects in the foreground are highlighted with high quality, their contours are smooth and quite distinguishable.

If you don't shoot with the flash turned on automatically, turning it off will make nearby details less clear. But this only applies to weak indoor lighting. At dusk, the lack of sunny color does not interfere. Here lies the main advantage of the Samsung Galaxy S7 over cheaper devices. They are already starting to blur the contours, applying noise reduction, and the hero of the review still allows you to highlight “ladders” of pixels in the photo - a side effect of the reduced resolution. That is, if the noise suppression system is connected, it is only superficially, without distorting the details.

When trying to photograph a neighboring house at dusk, the camera produces “something similar to real outlines.” “Soap” appears, the clarity leaves much to be desired, but competitors cannot even do this, showing strange spots when the photo is zoomed in, under which it is difficult to guess the house. Here the rating is a C with a slight minus, compared to full-fledged devices, but 5 in comparison with smartphones.

Night photography

You can get a high-quality shot at night only with a flash, and at close range. No matter how much people praise the Samsung S7 camera, it is just a smartphone, albeit an expensive one. Even a tripod and long exposure times won’t help you photograph the starry sky. A tiny (by DSLR standards) matrix cannot do this. In general, in auto mode at night the camera is of no use, as in comparison with any other smartphone. If you need a photo in the dark, only a DSLR will help.

Another thing is a photo with a flash of nearby elements. The device will be able to take a photo of a group sitting around a fire. It will even (an obvious argument in defense) maintain some kind of balance. The flame will not turn into an incomprehensible yellow spot, but will remain visible, but the faces will not turn into lifeless wax figures. So this is also a positive rating.

On the Samsung Galaxy S7, you can get a passable shot under the light of street lamps. The camera will also capture a sunset or sunrise, and will even be able to convey many shades.

Frontal

In addition to the main matrix, the Samsung S7 also has a good front camera. It is also not simple: with a resolution of 5 MP, the aperture is also f/1.7 (like the main one). This is very good for a front camera. Due to the good light transmission, selfies are very detailed. Some people won’t even like it: if you don’t apply effects, the device “spoils” the portrait. At an ultra-short distance (half a meter), in sunlight, every pimple, every mole becomes visible.

The background of the front camera is a little blurry (the focus is fixed, and is set specifically to the close-up), but within reason. This is approximately how the main matrix of the iPhone 4 shot under similar conditions, even if we do not take into account the lack of autofocus in the hero of the review. The selfie camera also supports automatic HDR.

Video shooting

In terms of video shooting, the Samsung Galaxy S7 is also good. Video recording in 4K at 30 FPS is supported. But this frame rate per second is ensured only in good lighting; at dusk, the frequency decreases.

The video camera performs much better when shooting in FullHD. A frame rate of 60 FPS is enough for smoothness, and the optical stabilizer smoothes out shake when shooting handheld. The sound is recorded in stereo, thanks to the presence of a second microphone. This is not Dolby Digital, but compared to Xiaomi with two microphones, it’s heaven and earth.

If you reduce the resolution to HD 720p, you can shoot slow motion at 240 FPS. When viewed, such videos will be played 8 times slower than they were filmed. This is not enough to capture the flapping of an insect's wing (for this you need at least 1000 FPS), but it is quite possible to view slower phenomena and processes in detail.

Are there any disadvantages to the camera as for a smartphone?

The main disadvantages of the Samsung Galaxy S7 camera (in comparison with full-size cameras) are highlighted. This is a lack of detail, low light sensitivity at night, and non-ideal dynamic range. Shooting video in 4K is noticeably inferior to video cameras (the same GoPro budget versions). But what if we compare it with smartphones, which is the Samsung Galaxy S7?

  • Dynamic range. There are no shortcomings here: modest compared to DSLRs (in which the sun remains orange), but cool compared to mobile phones. Only a few can do the same.
  • Detailing. There are no advantages here anymore. On a summer day, the S7 may lose to a more budget-friendly 16 MP matrix (due to fewer pixels), but in the evening you can still watch “soap” or “ladder”.
  • Focusing. The Samsung S7 definitely has no downsides here. The focus is fast, the contrast between the central composition and the periphery is emphasized perfectly, everyone would like it.
  • Evening shooting. In this regard, the camera of the Samsung Galaxy S7 is capable of outperforming its rivals. The increased matrix of pixels and aperture captures light better, there are no downsides.
  • Portrait. And there are no shortcomings in this nomination. Not a DSLR, but among smartphones only the Nokia 808 (which was discontinued 100 years ago) could do something better. This applies to both the main camera and the front camera (in which only models with Sony IMX179 at 8 MP can compete with the S7).

Thus, we can state: the only thing in which the Samsung Galaxy S7 camera may not be the best is the detail of photos taken in bright daylight. Here even a $200 Chinese camera with 16 MP can compare. The only difference is that the percentage of successful photos from the S7 will be higher than that of the Chinese.
