To find out which phone has the best front camera, Olya and Lena went to M-Video, where they tested 10 smartphones and took 1000 selfies. But they never came to a consensus.
In the first part, my thoughts on the best front cameras on smartphones Now it’s Olya’s turn.

Let us remind the test participants:

  • Apple iPhone 6 Plus;
  • Apple iPhone 7 Plus;
  • Samsung Galaxy S7;
  • Sony Xperia XA Ultra;
  • LG G6;
  • Huawei P10;
  • Asus ZenFone3;
  • Redme Note 3Pro;
  • Meizu MX6;
  • Lenovo Vibe S1.

In order for our research to be objective, we took photographs using preset camera settings and did not change brightness, color, or contrast. And for clarity, we compared each selfie with a photo taken on our own phone.

Selfies and reviews of Olya

Apple iPhone 6 Plus

Left – old phone IPhone 6, on the right - IPhone 6 Plus.

“It’s like the old joke: “Darling, you are the best, and yesterday I was convinced of this again!” Still, no matter how you look at smartphones, I like the iPhone’s picture the most! Compared to my old “six”, the new No. 6 has more realistic color rendition. I don’t see any improvement: the teeth are not whitened, the wrinkles are not smoothed out, the moles are all in place, the facial proportions are recognizable. I had a hard time choosing best photos(almost all are successful!). Yes, the details (including unnecessary ones) are clearly visible. But I look like myself. And if I really want to, I can remove wrinkles under my eyes in Photoshop myself. But I prefer not to clean up.”

Price: from 27,995 rub. (16 GB) up to RUB 34,295. (128 GB) on the M.Video website.

Apple iPhone 7 Plus

Left - old phone IPhone 6, on the right – IPhone 7 Plus.

“I was thinking about changing my 6 to 7 Plus, but now I’m not sure. I don't see much difference in quality with the 6S. Color rendition changes even with the slightest nuances of lighting, and sometimes unexpectedly (compare the collage with the following photos, they were taken from almost the same point) - it doesn’t fluctuate like that in the sixth one. Clarity and brightness are clearly enhanced - why? If I need, I can do it in special programs. And if it’s not necessary, how can I remove it?”

Price: from 59,900 rub. (32 GB) up to 74,990 rub. (256 GB) on the M.Video website.

Samsung Galaxy S7

On the left is an old iPhone 6, on the right is Samsung Galaxy S7.

“People who say that Samsung has the best front camera, what are you talking about?! Blair at original settings, dusty color and distorted proportions. See what happens if you bring the phone closer (not close, but just not at arm's length). This is the “horse face” setting, the narrowing of the face in the last photo - who needs it and why?! A definite dislike!”

Price: 39,990 rub. on the M.Video website.

Sony Xperia

On the left is an old iPhone 6 Plus, on the right is Sony Xperia

“I wasn’t happy with the camera: my face looks too smooth. It’s not that I value my deep nasolabial folds, but, excuse me, where are they anyway? They simply aren't even close. The tint of the photo, if you don’t work with the settings, turns out grayish - also not great. In general, sorry, Sony Xperia, but you’re missing!”

Price: 24,990 rub. on the M.Video website.

LG G6

On the left is an old iPhone 6, on the right is an LG G6.

“Very wide angle and built-in filters by default. As a result, the photo shows a strangely shaped face with no signs of age. Wide-angle lenses are found on almost all phones, but here the angle is particularly wide. Pay attention to the diagonal of the face - the image is clearly very distorted, and I didn’t bring the camera that close to me. The conclusion is this: I have a wide, round face, and there is no need to make me into a thin, polished model without my consent, thank you.”

Price: 51,990 rub. on the M.Video website.

Huawei P10

On the left is an old iPhone 6; on the right is Huawei P10.

“And again in front of you is a model girl. Look how wide her forehead is and how narrow her little chin is. For me, the real one is still the opposite. I'm not at all against filters, honestly - I adore them, collect them and use them all the time. But it’s one thing to brighten up your face in a dark photo and make the whites of your eyes less red after a sleepless night, and quite another to turn into an elf in a selfie. I do not welcome such transformations. Huawei - you’re not great, sorry.”

Price: 18,990 rub. on the M.Video website.

ASUS ZenFone 3

On the left is an old iPhone 6, on the right is ASUS ZenFone 3.

“All the photos turned out desperately pink - these are published, for example, in the Asian application Meitu. It also allows you to make yourself into an anime character. This is also possible here if you tinker with the settings. Lena and I had a lot of fun turning them up to the maximum (oooh, what big eyes I have!), but even if you remove them completely, the face will remain photoshopped in the Asian style: rosy cheeks, flawlessly smooth skin, snow-white eyes and teeth.

Because of this, all faces turn out to be approximately the same - the only difference is the color of the eyes and hair. However, probably, if you tweak the settings a little more..."

Price: 17,990 rub. on the M.Video website.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro

On the left is an old iPhone 6, on the right is Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro

“I probably take the most pictures with this camera (after the iPhone 6 Plus). Of course I loved this highlighted picture! #my middle name is logic But... But... No, I can’t think of any “buts”. Pure, undiluted photoshop, but beautiful, and that’s all.

Very simple, intuitive clear interface- for me this is a big plus. Bonus - fun bells and whistles. When shooting, the camera determines the age and age of the model. So cute: you bring it closer - you’re 26, you put your hand further away - 32, turned your face into the shadow - and now you’re 42. How long?! :))”

Price: 17,990 rub. on the M.Video website.

Meizu MX6

On the left is an old iPhone 6, on the right is a Meizu MX6.

“The picture is grayish, cloudy and overly brightened. The proportions are relatively realistic. For this price it’s not bad, but overall I’m not impressed.”

Lenovo Vibe S1

On the left is an old iPhone 6, on the right is Lenovo Vibe S1

“There are no complaints about realism, the facial proportions are quite human, in the photo I look like myself. And here I am, I’m fickle, lacking brightness and clarity of details. The photos do not seem to be blurred, but they are somewhat unclear. But, given my wishes and complaints about previous phones, this is not the worst option.”

Price: 12,990 rub. (temporarily out of stock on the M.Video website).

Total:

Best/Realistic Camera: My choice is still the good old one iPhone. Moreover, the most successful one is 6 Plus, and not 7 Plus, as I expected (surprise!). the best photos at the original settings. I am absolutely satisfied with the image detail and color rendition, and the wide angle of the lens does not bother me - in any case, it distorts the proportions of the face much less than other cameras.

The highest quality budget camera: can't choose between Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro And Lenovo Vibe S1. Both shoot very well on the front camera - without obvious kinks typical of many other cameras. And they are several times cheaper! If I had to buy a phone based solely on the parameters of the front camera, I would be torn between them.

The most tactful embellishment of reality: I don’t know who to give first place in this category. I don't like it when improved parameters are imposed. It’s better to clean up a good source a little yourself than to put up with the average, smoothed-out version that the camera offers. I am sure that in such matters you need handmade, manual! Therefore, I think I’ll keep this prize for myself.

Most fun camera: of course, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro! Determining age (and gender! I wonder if I can look like a brutal guy from some angles?) is a lot of fun! But, to be honest, this bells and whistles (like many others) can be downloaded as an application and installed on any phone. I have on iPhone There was one like that too, but I got tired of it a long time ago.

The most beautiful selfie: and here - unconditionally! — Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro. Well, of course, I don’t look like THAT in real life. But every ego sometimes needs to be stroked, and the camera copes with the task with an A plus. The only confusing thing is that she does this by default. And this, whatever one may say, is a deception.

Most Overrated Camera: Samsung Galaxy S7. If other cameras have built-in enhancement by default, here it seems that deterioration has been added. The only thing suitable for unscrupulous online cosmetics sellers is to take a “before” photo: “Oh, look what you have.” grey colour faces! And the face itself, to be honest, is kind of like a horse...” And THIS costs more iPhone 6 Plus?!

From left to right: IPhone 6 Plus, IPhone 7 Plus, Samsung, Sony, LG, Huawei, Asus, Xiaomi, Meizu, Lenovo.

Which pictures did you like best? Do you agree with Olya's conclusions? Share in the comments :)

We thank M.Video, Regina Rodnyanskaya, Evgeniy Tsedenov and the team that works in the store in Kuzminki for their help in organizing the shooting.

But here the iPhone 6 performed best of all. It has a higher quality picture at ISO 1600 than the Galaxy S6 at ISO 800. But the main thing is the preservation of detail. Neither Samsung, nor Sony, nor HTC provide the same detail as the iPhone 6.

conclusions

The conclusion was probably easily predicted as one read the article. I find it difficult to single out one leader, so the best mobile cameras there will be two – Samsung Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6. The first has a higher resolution, more manual settings, and the ability to take photographs almost point-blank. The second has no problems with shooting in the dark, very realistic color rendition and good detail at high ISO values. In extreme bad conditions(at night, in moonlight) Samsung performs a little better. The result is terrible, but at least you can see something in the photographs. It's a shame the iPhone 6 can't do that.

well and Sony examples and HTC show that the number of megapixels is not the most important thing in life. In terms of efficiency per megapixel, the iPhone 6 is second to none. And the combination of quality and resolution is best from Samsung. HTC One According to the results of camera testing, the M9 takes third place, the Sony Xperia Z3 takes fourth place. But if you suddenly want to take photos in the pouring rain or under water, only Xperia will allow you to do this. None of the other participants can boast of such protection.

From year to year, many smartphones appear on the market with high-quality cameras. Samsung's flagships are always among the first and allow you to take high-quality photos in different conditions, and this can be done as in automatic mode, which even a child can handle - point and shoot, and select manual settings. The second, at first glance, is more difficult, but in reality you can get photos that cannot be taken on other smartphones so easily and simply. I propose to understand in detail how the best way take pictures on Galaxy Note 8, so that your photos stand out for the better and your friends are surprised by your talents. But first, a few explanations of how the main camera on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 works.

Galaxy Note 8's dual lenses – optical zoom and wide angle

Unlike previous Samsung models, the Note 8 features a dual rear camera setup for the first time. On the left is the main lens, on the right is the wide-angle lens. Both matrices are 12-megapixel, but the angle from which they look at the world differs, as well as the aperture: the first camera has f/1.7, the second f/2.4. Please note that both lenses are equipped with optical stabilization. To see what the frame field looks like in each camera, you can use the “Live Focus” option, then the phone will take two pictures at the same time, you can look at them below.

But the most important thing is that both during shooting and after, you can blur the background to get a beautiful, artistic photo. See what it looks like.

For the user, this means that you are not limited to a single lens, as on most other smartphones, you can take several photos at the same time and only then choose the one you like best. Switching to the second lens also gives you 2x optical zoom. That is, you get a picture without loss of quality, there is no picture crumbling due to noise. Look at examples of such photographs.

Of course, the main lens takes better pictures at night, since its aperture is higher (f/1.7 versus f/2.4). But if you remember that a few years ago all flagships had f/2.4 lenses, it turns out that the quality of even a second wide-angle lens is excellent and also expands your creativity.

A huge number of people believe that the most important thing in a smartphone is not at all additional settings, which provide flexibility and the ability to customize it for any person, and the characteristics initially specified by the manufacturer. In the case of a camera, this is a point-and-shoot use case. With this, everything is fine in the Galaxy Note 8, since traditionally Samsung has taken care of all user groups. You can double-press the power button on the body and the camera will start up instantly, taking less than a second. What's next? And then you just take pictures at any time, since the matrix is equipped with DualPixel technology, it instantly focuses on objects, and you can take pictures, knowing that you will get a high-quality, sharp picture. There is no need to hold the device and catch the scene, freeze, hold your breath. Everything works fine as is. However, look at a few pictures taken this way, on the go and without any preparation. I have most of these photographs, because in life scenes do not wait for you, but you just need to see them.

Photography is not difficult, but some people believe that if they bought SLR camera, she must take breathtaking pictures without their participation, agreeing only to press the shutter. It’s a pity, but this is not happening yet, and for the pictures to turn out interesting, you need to understand what you are photographing, and most importantly, how. Let me give you an example. A friend of mine is a restaurant critic, and she often takes photographs of food, which was once considered bad manners by many people, but is now widespread. Photographs of dishes in professional photography are often processed in such a way as to highlight the central part and slightly darken the plate. The shooting scenario is the same in 99% of cases. The Galaxy Note 8 has a special mode, by selecting which you will get just such vivid pictures of food.

There's also a sports mode for shooting fast-moving objects, the ability to create animated GIFs from photos, and even use the main camera for selfies - the phone itself detects that you're looking at it and takes a photo!

Choose desired mode not difficult, of course, if you want to get the maximum possible, and not just a photo in automatic mode. Another tip: very often when shooting outdoors, the sun gets in the way. This is where the HDR mode comes to the rescue, when several shots are used to create a final one, where the difference in lighting is compensated, and you see beautiful picture. HDR works automatically, but if you wish, you can turn it on so that it always works. You can see which bright pictures for Instagram are obtained with this mode.

But if, when shooting on a bright sunny day, you see a difference with the previous Samsung flagships, but it won’t be stunning, it’s a completely different matter at night. The camera now better processes night scenes, selects lighting sources and adjusts the image depending on them. Here you need to understand the peculiarity of the camera’s operation; it tries to make the picture as light as possible, which can lead to noise. Some people like to see everything, while others, on the contrary, want to achieve beautiful twilight. Secondly, I recommend doing exposure correction to minus one or even minus two, this will allow you to achieve this effect.

Please note that the Galaxy Note 8 takes evening and night shots with beautiful, rich colors, that is, they are not faded, like on many other devices. This is a merit not only of the matrix, but also of the objective lenses.

The Galaxy Note 8 camera is not just universal, it allows you to take pictures in any conditions. Let me give you an example. About five years ago, I didn’t even take out my phone at night or in difficult shooting conditions, because I understood that the quality of the photos would upset me. Then I began to try to do this, but the number of suitable photographs was not large - depending on your luck. But on the Galaxy Note 8, in difficult conditions, the camera produces most of the pictures in good quality, that is, you spend less effort to ensure that everything is as it should be.

And for those who are not afraid to learn a little more, there is a Pro mode. In it, you can not only adjust each of the parameters yourself (focus, selecting white balance, shutter speed and color range), but also to achieve the maximum possible results. Thanks to Pro mode You can call the Galaxy Note 8 a full-fledged camera that gives room for creativity.

Many manufacturers do not give their users such opportunities, since it takes a lot of time to develop, and only a few take advantage of this. I admit honestly that in manual mode I only photograph in difficult conditions and do not do it every day. But when I need to do this, there is simply no alternative, I can only get such a photo here or on other Samsung flagships equipped with Pro mode.

I haven't said anything yet about another feature, the dynamic focus mode, where you can control the background blur and also get two shots (wide-angle and normal). This mode is interesting for shooting portraits, you highlight the person. The shooting distance in this mode is from 1.2 meters.

It would not be out of place to say that Samsung smartphones have historically implemented macro mode very well. Here it’s exactly the same, the minimum shooting distance is about 10 centimeters, the ability to even use a second camera and get pictures that are unlikely on other devices. For example, look at how the spider was photographed; I’m sure many people like such pictures.

I can also say that my children love taking pictures on Galaxy camera Note 8, because there are various stickers and you can turn yourself into anyone.

They work with both the main and front cameras. It's entertainment, but it's great for hanging out with friends when you get more than just regular photos from somewhere, but trying to convey an emotion. The question here, of course, is how ready you are to use such effects. But if you don’t need them, then you don’t have to touch them, no one is forcing you to do this.

Nothing is said at all about the front camera, although it is present here, has a resolution of 8 megapixels, supports a bunch of enhancements (face color, eye size, skin tone and others), which girls really like. And, of course, those same effects and drawings on top of the face. A good front camera, but in the Galaxy Note 8 you can and should use the main camera for this, fortunately the manufacturer has done everything to ensure that you have this opportunity.

The last thing worth mentioning is video recording. Of course, 4K is supported, the picture is clear and colorful, several microphones located on the body work very well. There is slow motion. Take a look at the video recording examples below.

Ten years ago the camera in mobile phone had only one advantage over a full-fledged camera: it was always with you. Today, the camera in the Galaxy Note 8 sets the standard, a level of quality that allows you to do without an additional camera, and this is a very, very good level. For most people, this quality of pictures is not just enough, but enough for the eyes. Moreover, for the majority of users who did not have flagships at their disposal, such a camera will be the best camera, which they have. My experience proves that shooting with a smartphone in various conditions is easy and simple, and people like the resulting images. They constantly ask: “Are these photos taken with a smartphone?” It's interesting that this question sounds all the time last years, but the progress in cameras is such that it remains relevant today, people can’t believe that cameras have evolved so much. And if you choose a smartphone based only on the camera, then my clear recommendation would be the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. However, there is something to praise it for in other areas, which we will talk about separately. And to finish off the camera story, here are a few more shots that give an idea of what the Galaxy Note 8 can do.
