Working with the Mozilla Thunderbird email client. Mozilla Thunderbird: Complete User Guide

Program Mozilla Thunderbird is one of the most popular solutions when working with email correspondence.

  • The main income of open source products is advertising, which is also found in Mozilla Thunderbird.

Advice! In the next settings item, we will be asked to create an account on the gandi.net service. This is not the most convenient service, and it does not have a Russian-language interface, so we select the “Skip this and use my existing mail” option.

  • In the next window, we will need to indicate the address and password of an account already registered on any service, as well as enter a name that will be automatically attached as a signature to your letters ( this function may be disabled in the future).

  • For most popular services email correspondence Mozilla Thunderbird will automatically select necessary settings, you just have to choose between IMAP and POP3 message forwarding protocols.
    The difference between them is that when using POP3, copies of emails are stored on your hard drive, which allows you to use the client even when there is no Internet, but this can take up a significant amount of your computer's memory.
    Since Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet are now widespread, it would be more advisable to use IMAP.

  • On this basic settings finished. All you have to do is wait a few minutes for the program to download all messages from the server.

Managing anti-spam filter and anti-phishing protection

IN modern internet there are a large number of annoying advertisements and various malware, so the Mozilla Thunderbird email client has built-in anti-spam and anti-virus protection that can be activated as follows:

  • Click on the control icon (three bars in the right corner of the program control panel), select “Settings”, and then go to the protection tab.

  • In the anti-spam tab you can specify what to do with advertising messages(delete or move to the Spam folder), automatically mark them as read, and also activate the built-in adaptive filter that will recognize advertising mailings and place them on the spam list.
  • The “Fraudulent emails” section makes it possible to activate a function that notifies the user that the sent message may be phishing.

  • And the “Working with antivirus” tab will allow you to give your antivirus program access to scanning emails, which will provide you with an increased level of protection.

Let's take a closer look at the old man.

A few days ago, news came out on the site. It included a photo of the Facebook CEO's computer screen (cropped from his Instagram post):

If you look closely at the Dock, you will notice that Mark uses Mozilla Thunderbird as his email client. No comments from Zuckerberg were found regarding the choice of email client. And it’s not a fact that he uses it at all. There is a theory that the icon in the photo is not Thunderbird at all, but Cisco VPN:

But this picture reminded me that there was not a word about Thunderbird in the last site. The time has come to correct this reckless omission.

Let's look at the interesting features of the program and think about whether Mark is using it simply out of habit or is it a carefully thought-out choice? You may not even realize how cool this email client is.

Thunderbird is free and cross-platform. It is still slowly improving and renewing its strength third party developers, although Mozilla froze the project back in 2012, and in 2015 finally abandoned its support. The latest version was released on May 31, 2016 (just under a month ago).

It has everything a good email client should have, for example:

  • Smart folders;
  • Filters;
  • Advanced Search;
  • Spellchecking;
  • Possibility of autonomous operation;
  • Integration with cloud file storages (Box in standard version, Dropbox can be connected using an extension);
  • The most simplified setup of new mailboxes;
  • Archiving of letters.

If you want to use a corporate email server in your company, but do not want to pay for Outlook, then you should definitely take a closer look at this email client. It has full IMAP support, the ability centralized settings, sharing address book, etc.

Now let's list some interesting features that make Thunderbird especially attractive (although many of them can be found in analogues).

Conveniently organized workspace

By default, the email client interface consists of three tabs: Mail,Calendar And Tasks. The most important applications necessary for organizing work are combined into one.

Yes, there are many calendars and task managers that are much nicer to look at (if you don’t look through the eyes of someone nostalgic for the 2000s). But all the functionality that such applications should have is in Thunderbird.

Merging mail with chats and RSS

Open the menu item File -> Create -> Chat account and select the service with which we want to organize work in a separate Thunderbird tab: Google Talk, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Next, follow the instructions of the application.

You can screw it to Thunderbird in a similar way news feed(from RSS feeds/Usenet groups) by keeping the number of windows on your desktop to a minimum.

History of mail manipulation

All events that occur with letters are stored in history. You can see it in the menu Tools -> Job Manager.

List of saved email attachments

A tab for viewing all files downloaded from emails can be included in the menu Tools -> Saved files.

Notifications about reading and delivery of letters

To enable this function, when creating a new letter, you need to make the menu items active Settings -> Delivery Receipt/Read Receipt.

Extensions

Mozilla Thunderbird in its default form is quite limited. But by installing several add-ons, of which there are more than a hundred, you can assemble them into the ideal working tool for yourself. Here are examples of useful extensions:

xNote - attaching notes to emails.

Thunderbird Browser - opens links from emails in a small browser window, on top of the email client.

TagToolbar - organizes letters in your mailbox using tags.

QuickText - letter templates.

Send Later 3 - delayed sending of letters.

A separate group worth noting are extensions to increase the level of data security and confidentiality:

QuickPasswords is a password manager.

Dr. Web Link Checker - checks links from emails for viruses.

Bluehell Firewall - blocking content from malicious sites.

Enigmail - OpenPGP-compatible email encryption (to protect against interception).

Naturally, in this small article it was not possible to talk about all the capabilities of Thunderbird. Detailed information information about this email client can be found on its official website. You can also download there latest version Thunderbird for your operating system(Windows, OS X, Linux).

Good day, dear readers and other individuals.

I thought and thought and suddenly realized that by some unknown miracle I had bypassed the mail topic. No, of course, I wrote briefly about , mentioned about , and on Twitter I talked a little about my love for , but from a programmatic point of view, I forgot to devote time to any particular email client. Strange. I'm correcting myself :)

As you already understood, today we will talk about mail, or more precisely about a program that allows you to receive, store, sort this mail and generally do a variety of indecent things with it. Many of you will certainly be surprised, they say, why do we need a program if modern world everything has long been integrated into the browser level - just go in and use it.

However, as an old-school person (my email started back in Windows 2000) and just a professional, I believe that email clients have a number of advantages over browser-based solutions. I will tell you about them (advantages) (and even show you a little), and also, in fact, I will teach you how to install, configure and powerfully use such a wonderful email client as Thunderbird.

Advantages of local mail over browser mail

Before we begin, as promised, I will first talk about what I see as the advantages of local, so to speak, software mail from the one that lives in the browser.

Firstly, it does support several boxes at once and in different services. I don’t know how it is for anyone, but I have more than ten email"s that live on the heap different domains: @gmail, @mail, @yandex, @website and so on. Naturally, running from box to box in the browser, even if I have direct bookmarks made on them, will still be torturous: while you log in, while you check everything new, while you reply... It’s long and tedious.

Next, of course, is functionality. Whatever one may say, the mail that lives “on the other side” will always be far from local installed program. The point is that the same Thunderbird, as well as Firefox, contains a bunch of plugins without which, personally, I can’t imagine working with mail at all. There is mail markup, quick replies (with one click on the keyboard) using pre-prepared templates, normal linking to the calendar organizer, and full The address book with the ability to fill it out yourself different information and notes (as well as clear export), and an amazing (in terms of quality, clarity and convenience) message search, and clear support RSS, and all sorts of external amenities like design styles, fonts, buttons, etc., etc.

In general, there is a lot of stuff that mail sent to the server side (i.e., to the browser) still needs to grow and grow. By the way, a complete selection, from me, of powerful plugins for Thunderbird it will be, but later, and will be released either as a separate article or in several (ala the way they are released for Firefox).

@mail
Connection protection: STARTTLS
Port (for POP): 110

@gmail And @yandex
Connection protection: SSL/TLS
Port (for POP): 995
Authentication method: Normal password

When finished, you can press the button " Retest"..

AND " Create an account"(after testing is completed). The wizard will check the password and, if everything is correct, create an account, after which we will see something like this:

Now let's configure where our mail will be stored on the disk.

Mail file storage location

It is better not to leave the initially proposed path, because it is buried somewhere in the depths of the system and, in case of problems with it, it will not always be possible to find and restore the folder later, and therefore it would be good to designate your own, which is what we will do now.

On the "tab" Local folders "press the button" Review" and set the folder we created, say, with the name _mail somewhere on the disk. Having done this, click on " OK".

Of course, you can set up various rules for this very sorting (the default is “by date”, but there are also a variety of options, for example: “by sender”, “by topic”, etc., which, I think, you have already seen on screenshot before last).

Message filters in Thunderbird

We've sorted out the visual sorting. Let's look at filters and try to create some of them.

Let's say that we receive a huge number of emails with a mention in the subject line of a certain website " Notes from Sys.Admin"and we want all these letters to be placed in a folder we created in advance @from_site(the folder is created by right-clicking on, say, the “Inbox” item). To do this, go to " Menu - Message filters".

Here we select from the drop-down list the box for which filters will be applied, and then click on the button " Create".

In the window that appears, fill in the appropriate fields, namely:

  • Filter name: enter something that will let you know what the filter is
  • Topic content t: in this example I enter " Notes from Sys.Admin"
  • In the field, move the message to: Select the folder we created from the drop-down list. In my case it's @from_site

Done, press the button " OK". You can immediately check the operation of the filter by selecting for the field " Run selected filters in a folder" folder where we want to apply the created filter (in in this case this is "Inbox") and click on the button " Launch".

If everything was done correctly, then all mail will be sorted in accordance with the rule you specified.
Naturally, as in the case of sorting, you can create filters of very different directions and variations, and you can configure filtering according to several rules at once, for which you use the “+” button in the list and set a new rule.

Over time, when you set up all the filters you need, you will be terribly pleased with how significantly your comfort when working with mail has increased.

Afterword

That's how things are.

It turned out quite voluminous, but this is not the end :) Especially for Thunderbird, as under Firefox, there are various useful extensions, designed to make your life more convenient, but we’ll talk about them next time.

Stay with the project and you will learn a lot of new and useful things;)

As always, if you have any questions, additions, thoughts, thanks, etc., I will be glad to hear them in the comments to this post.

Mozilla Thunderbird users sometimes encounter problems that don't always have obvious solutions. Mozilla Thunderbird errors occur due to a number of factors that are not always caused by user actions. In this manual we will look at the most famous of them.

Mozilla Thunderbird does not send messages

If there is an error sending a Mozilla Thunderbird message, the first thing you should check is SMTP settings for outgoing correspondence. Select the account that is not working, click on it right click mouse and select “Options” - “Outgoing mail server”. Make sure that the server settings listed at the bottom of the panel match the settings of the provider providing the service.

To know current settings server can be found on the website https://support.mozilla.org/ru/ in the appropriate section.

If the information is not there, it can be found on the official website mail provider– usually in the user support section.

Make sure the correct SMTP server is used. Click on the main menu button, then select “Settings” - “Account Settings”.

It is important to remember that the services of one provider do not send correspondence to another - for example, the Yandex SMTP server does not work with by Gmail and vice versa.

Check your firewall settings, firewall or antivirus software - they may prevent Mozilla Thunderbird from accessing the Internet. Disable all protection for a short time and try sending a test letter.

Check to see if Mozilla Thunderbird is not working due to blocking on the part of your Internet provider. It is known that many providers block port 25 for security reasons, so you have to use others. Information about blocking can be obtained from the provider’s technical support.

If the above methods do not help, try removing the SMTP password and changing it to another one. Don't forget to set the same password in your mailbox settings.

Messages do not arrive in Mozilla Thunderbird

When do they arise? Mozilla errors Thunderbird receiving correspondence, you should do all of the above. Generally, these methods work in most cases. However, if the problem cannot be resolved, it is recommended to take the following steps:

  • Check the availability and functionality of the Internet connection - the problem may be on the provider’s side;
  • If the provider's web interface Email works correctly, the problems are related to incorrect settings Mozilla Thunderbird;
  • Make sure that your email provider account password has not been changed by you or others;
  • If Mozilla Thunderbird has recently been updated, access may be blocked by your antivirus or firewall.

If you do not receive all your correspondence, and important letters get lost somewhere along the way, check the antispam filter settings of your email provider. Maybe, postal services they simply do not allow such messages to pass because they contain links or attachments of a certain format. Also, check your antispam settings in Mozilla Thunderbird itself, especially if you created your own additional filters or blocked some respondents.

Links in messages don't work

Unlike some similar programs, Mozilla Thunderbird inserts clickable links when creating messages that you can follow. When you insert a link, it will be styled accordingly (that is, highlighted and underlined), but when you click on it, nothing will happen. When you type a link in the body of an email, it appears as plain, unformatted text. This decision was made by the Mozilla Thunderbird developers specifically because of the features of editing links. They are activated only after sending a message or saving it in drafts.

Go to “Start” - “Control Panel” - “Default Programs”.

Click the “Set default programs” button.

Check the list to see which browser is used by default (and whether it is used at all).

If this method does not help, you should check if Mozilla is causing this error. Thunderbird installed plugins. To do this, you need to launch the mail client in safe mode(restart and hold Shift when starting the application). In the window that appears, check the “Disable all add-ons” checkbox.

If links open in safe mode but not in normal mode, Mozilla Thunderbird is not working correctly due to one of the add-ons. It remains to determine why exactly. To do this, you can disable them one by one in the add-ons control panel, checking the functionality of the links.

Which includes a functional email client - a solution for business people in the corporate sector, the Mozilla Thunderbird mailer is perhaps the most ideal option comfortable work with email for ordinary users. For ordinary users who actively use email in Everyday life. Convenient, minimalistic in terms of consumption system resources, With automatic tuning accounts email, flexible and customizable - Mozilla Thunderbird brings true comfort to working with multiple email accounts.

Mozilla Thunderbird is a functional mailer that supports email protocols IMAP mail and POP and HTML, as well as RSS news feeds, news groups and chats (personal correspondence) of IRC, Twitter, Facebook, Google Talk accounts. As for the last functionality, these, alas, are not the most popular communication services for Runet; for example, popular social networks - VKontakte and Odnoklassniki - are not. Nevertheless, the idea itself is good - to implement personal correspondence from social networks and various services for communication between people in the mailer.

Among the advantages of Mozilla Thunderbird are the efficiency of the program, security when working with email, a simple interface with a clear and understandable organization. Mozilla Thunderbird, like the browser, is absolutely free, cross-platform software. The email client can be downloaded from its official website.

Adding a mail account

The first thing we see after Mozilla launcher Thunderbird is a mailer window with options for adding email accounts and other components supported by the program. Click “Email” to add your mailbox to the software client.

If this is your first time adding an email account to your desktop mailer, be sure to check whether it is active in your account settings postal service access to mail via IMAP and POP protocols.

And in the Mozilla Thunderbird mailer you will see a welcome window for setting up your email account. Moreover, if someone does not yet have an email account or needs a multi-account, Mozilla Thunderbird offers quick registration an account on mail services with which the program cooperates - on gandi.net and on hover.com. These are English-language email services, but they are far from the most popular on the Internet, so naturally we will refuse the Mozilla Thunderbird offer. In our case, however, probably like in most others, there is a mailbox, so feel free to click “Skip this and use my existing mail.”

Mozilla Thunderbird will automatically select optimal settings connections that are available in the program database for most popular mail servers. And in the next window, all that remains to be done is to select the protocol - IMAP or POP. The first protocol, IMAP, allows you to work with email without downloading it to the local space of your computer device. This is a more popular type of interaction between mail servers and client Email Applications, in which the user can have access to mail data both from the mailer and on the mail service website anywhere globe where there is Internet. POP protocol completely confiscates all mail from mail server and transfers it locally to your computer. It can be used in rare cases when it is undesirable to leave mail on the server, at the same time in some secluded place on the computer or on removable media emails must be stored.

Select the protocol (in most cases it will be, of course, IMAP) and click “Finish”.

If the mailbox information was entered correctly, we will see how Mozilla Thunderbird is promptly replenished with incoming email messages. In just a couple of minutes, all letters from the server will be downloaded, and they will be displayed in the mailer window.

Interface

Don’t be afraid of the poor, ascetic interface of the mailer, with the help of add-ons (extensions), just like the browser Mozilla Firefox, the Mozilla Thunderbird program can also be “dressed up” in beautiful cover from among the themes presented in the add-on store. Click on the mailer menu and select “Add-ons”.

In the first tab “Get add-ons”, select “Favorite topics” and click the “Show all” link.

Then select the one you like from the catalog of presented covers and click the “Add” button to apply it.

And to change appearance mailer radically, you can apply the so-called full topics designs that completely transform the program interface into a different style - with a different background color, with different fonts, with different icons. To get to their catalog, in the “Get add-ons” tab, select “Other customization methods” and click the “Show all full themes” link.

We get into the catalog of complete topics and select the one that interests you.

So, lovers of dark tones can give Mozilla Thunderbird a techno style in black.

Lovers of positive colors can choose cute themes in warm colors.

In order not to be distracted by the colors of the program interface, you can choose neutral themes with readable fonts.

Sorting

Mozilla Thunderbird is the ideal email application for those who like to collect various junk in their mailbox for years. The table of letters can be displayed by subject, sender, and date of receipt. In addition, the mailer is equipped with internal search and filters, with which you can display messages only unread, only with tags, only with attachments, etc.

Anti-spam and protection

Moreover, the anti-spam filter can be configured separately for each email account.

And also allow the antivirus installed on the system to quarantine suspicious emails.

Sound settings

If you are the leader of E-Mail subscriptions and often receive mail, in the “General” section of the mailer settings you can turn off the sound notification so that it does not annoy you. Or you can, on the contrary, as sound notification set your favorite ringtone (".wav" format) or any other sound from an existing selection in Windows (C:\Windows\Media), changing the preinstalled system sound.

As you can see, Mozilla Thunderbird functionality There is plenty of comfort in working with incoming mail. What about outgoing mail?

Sending letters

To send email, click the large noticeable button at the top “Create”. An additional window for creating and sending a message will appear. Here, from the drop-down list, we can select one or another email account from which the letter will be sent.

Mozilla Thunderbird is equipped with an internal spell checker - this is certainly a huge plus for the program. As for the formatting capabilities of sent text, Mozilla’s brainchild, of course, is far from being built into Microsoft Outlook 2013 full functionality text editor Word, however, basic capabilities for text formatting are present.

To avoid writing the same letter text to many recipients, you can use Mozilla Thunderbird templates. We compose a universal letter once and save it in the mailer as a template.

What you will need to do in the future is to open it in the templates folder, if necessary, enter certain exact data, enter the recipient and, in fact, press the send button.

Export and import settings

It's a pity that Mozilla Thunderbird is not equipped cloud synchronization data, as is the case with most browsers. And, alas, there is no full-fledged function for importing/exporting settings in the mailer either. It is only possible to import settings from other email clients.

But it's not a problem. Transfer Mozilla settings Thunderbird can be done manually by copying the configured files to a non-system drive or moving them to cloud storage. And then these files will need to be placed in the Mozilla Thunderbird settings folder after installing the program on a new reinstalled system or on a new device.

Before reinstalling the system or before using Mozilla Thunderbird on another computer device, go to the mailer settings directory:

Typically, the AppData folder is hidden and is not visible in Explorer by default. In order for it and its contents to be visible, you need to set the display settings hidden elements in Windows Explorer.

The contents of the Thunderbird folder are the mailer settings files. We copy this folder with all its contents and place it on a non-system drive or send it to cloud storage on the Internet.

But new system or install the Mozilla Thunderbird program on a new computer, launch it and immediately close it without connecting email accounts. We follow the same path as before - set the display of hidden elements Windows Explorer and go to the mailer settings folder:

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird

Open the “Thunderbird” folder with the old mailer settings in another Explorer window and drag all its contents into new folder"Thunderbird" Naturally, we replace the files in the destination folder.

Google Chrome or a Chromium-based clone like . Therefore, collect all your mailboxes so as not to miss important letter- a productive move. At the same time, no matter from which email service the email is sent, a functional mailer like Mozilla Thunderbird will offer its own tools for creating it, and there will be no need to delve into the peculiarities of the web interface of each individual account.
