Why does the Wi-Fi network disappear? Wi-Fi network drops frequently

The network is a very tricky “subject”: if it exists, then it is immediately gone! Today we will look at another common problem of spontaneous disconnection of the Wi-Fi signal on laptops. So!

You have a network: computer - Internet - laptop, but the signal on the laptop constantly disappears. Sound familiar?

What could be the problem?

There are several reasons why this problem occurs. Here they are: 1) violations when connecting to the DNS server; 2) old drivers on network adapters are sources of failure; 3) problems with the module (rare, but it happens); 4) the router itself has broken down (rarely, but it also happens).

All these reasons are not very common, but they do occur. But there is another reason that rarely anyone pays attention to, but, nevertheless, it is the most common.

What do you do to ensure that your laptop retains its battery charge for as long as possible? Well, well, think. That's right: you put it into energy-saving mode. By the way, very often this mode is configured in laptops by default. Yes, this is very true, because the battery retains its charge longer. But this is precisely where the reason for the constant Wi-Fi interruption lies, friends!

Way to solve the problem

Here is a simple, understandable and accessible algorithm for solving the problem.

Regardless of what operating system you have, the gist of it comes down to this.

"Start" - "Control Panel" - "System and Security" - "Power Options". Now you see: you have a checkmark in the “Energy Saving” item. Right there you have an active system link “Setting up the power supply scheme” - click on this link. On the next page you will see another link “Change advanced power settings” click. You will get a Power Options window where you will see a menu. In this menu, find the item “Wireless network adapter settings” and open it (click on it). The “On Battery” sub-item will open and right there (opposite) you will see options for setting energy saving. So: the option “On battery: maximum energy saving” will be enabled there. It is because of this that your Wi-Fi disappears. The solution is simple: select the option “On battery: maximum performance”. Click "Apply" and "Ok". All.

There is another option to fix the Wi-Fi problem. Open the System and Security folder. In the "System" item, select the line "Device Manager" - "Network adapters". At this point, find the adapter that is responsible for Wi-Fi operation (for example, Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter, in general, the word Wireless should be there). Double-click on this adapter with the left mouse button. A window with the properties of your adapter will open. Open the “Power Management” tab and uncheck the “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save energy” option. Click on "Ok". All.

Happy dancing with the tambourine, friends, and see you again!

On a laptop. Thus, the connection to the Internet is broken, important notifications and alerts do not arrive, but, as you know, it is impossible to live without the Internet. Many blame device manufacturers for this - laptop or router, although the problem is most often easily solved with a couple of mouse clicks.

Today we will study the main possible reasons for the occurrence of such a situation, and find out what to do if WiFi on a laptop stops working.

WiFi turns off on a laptop - we solve the problem!

If the laptop’s connection to the Internet via WiFi is unstable and constantly breaks down, then there may be several reasons for this - either certain operating system settings, a device malfunction, or poor communication from the provider or cellular network operator.

You might also want to pay attention to this video to understand what factors affect the stability of your WiFi connection.

Disable battery saving

The main reason why WiFi constantly turns off on laptops lies in the power and energy saving settings. Since a laptop is a battery-powered mobile device, manufacturers are trying to reduce the power consumption of the device in favor of greater autonomy and longer battery life.

By default, device performance when running on battery power is slightly reduced in favor of energy saving. Also, to avoid wasting electricity on unused functions, the operating system turns off some computer components. For example, if the WiFi connection is idle or not actively used, the WiFi adapter can be disabled to save power. Therefore, your favorite laptop, left unattended, carefully disables unnecessary functions and deprives you of a stable connection to the Internet.

Power settings are located in the control panel. However, please note that the manufacturer often installs additional programs that allow you to control power consumption, and the reason for WiFi turning off may be hidden in them.

Open the taskbar and select Power Options. The control panel and the item we need can be easily found using the search.

In the power supply window that opens, you can see which power management scheme is currently active for you, and also proceed to its detailed settings.

In the window that opens, you can configure the screen timeout and sleep timeout. We are interested in the point that changes additional power options.

Find the item responsible for WiFi operation. Here it is long called a wireless network adapter. Change the value to high performance.

After changing the power plan, reboot your device and check if the problem is resolved.

Reboot the router

If the problem persists, rebooting the router may help. The easiest way is to turn off the power and turn on the device.

You can also reboot the device through the administration panel by going to 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in your browser, entering your username and password, and clicking the appropriate button. The exact address and reboot method depend on the device model, and the login and password must be changed from standard admin/admin to your personal ones.

Checking the network signal and the stability of the Internet connection

We discussed how to increase the speed of a wi-fi router and the Internet in one of the previous articles. In our situation, it’s worth paying attention to how far the router is from the laptop and what obstacles the signal passes through.

If, in addition to WiFi, the Internet is unstable over a wired connection, it may be worth calling your provider and resolving the issue of poor Internet with them.

Internet speed can be easily checked using an online service speedtest.net- after all, if the values differ from those declared by the provider to a lesser extent, this is a reason to be puzzled by the quality and level of the signal.

Reinstalling the driver

Reinstalling the wireless adapter driver may also help. To do this you need to do the following:

  • go to the website of your laptop manufacturer;
  • enter the model of your device;
  • select the operating system;
  • download the latest version and install the new driver.

The method for downloading software varies depending on the device manufacturer and model. Try to download the latest versions of drivers for your operating system and device.

We have looked at the most popular reasons that lead to laptop WiFi constantly turning off. It’s good if the problem was solved by changing the power plan, and the performance of both the router and the laptop does not raise any questions. If the problem cannot be solved, it may be worth contacting a specialist.

Hi all. Recently I encountered a problem that the wifi on the router disappeared. If you come close to the router, everything works fine. But if you go to another room, the speed drops significantly and wifi periodically disappears. Although a little earlier there were no such problems anywhere.

I increased the power of the router, increased its speed, and made special settings on my smartphone and laptop. But this did not give any results. I had to look for the reason elsewhere and I found it. I also realized that many people have this problem and many do not know what to do if wifi disappears on the router. In this article I will tell you how to achieve a stable connection to a Wi-Fi network.

Identifying the problem is quite easy. For this we need a smartphone. I will take my Android smartphone simply because it will be easier for them to check everything. In this case, we will need a smartphone to see in different parts of the room where and how our network is working, and also to see what interference there is in the network.

The whole problem is that today everyone installs a WI-FI router at home and because of this the number of Wi-Fi networks is increasing. Accordingly, when networks are on the same channel, it creates a lot of wifi interference and because of this, your network begins to work poorly. All devices that are connected to this network must also listen to other networks on the same channel and only after that connect to their channel (router), and then send data.

How to use wifi analyzer

To identify clogged channels we will use an Android smartphone. You will need to download a free wifi analyzer program on your smartphone. The free version will be quite enough. You can find the program in Play Market. It is necessary to install the program from the author M. Sid. She looks like this

After installation, launch the program and see what networks we have. Below I will show you how to use wifi analyzer. My example shows all the networks that my smartphone can see.

In this case, the networks are located on different channels. At the bottom there is a strip of channels and the channels go from one to fourteen. But I want to say right away that old routers only support the first 12 channels. And channels 13 and 14 support only the most modern devices that support the latest versions of the Wi-Fi protocol. Accordingly, in order to find the best network, we must look at those networks that are currently free and on which the least amount of interference will be created. If you noticed, in the graph above the 3rd and 4th channels are free. In addition, there is also a ninth channel, on which there are no networks at all, but the problem is that work on this channel is impossible on most devices. Therefore, some factors need to be taken into account. For example, if you have a modern router, you can turn on any channel in it and use this channel to connect to your Internet. But there is another point. In addition to the fact that you can connect using the 2.4 GHz frequency, there is also a 5 GHz frequency. Let me switch to it now.

Please note, when switching to the 5 GHz frequency, other channel numbers have already gone. But, as you can see, there are much fewer networks that are used. I use a 5 GHz network because the least amount of other routers operate at this frequency. There are a total of six networks here at the 5 GHz frequency, including mine. That is, it turns out that at the 5 GHz frequency there are many more channels that are not occupied by anything. This means there is no interference. But there are small differences from 2.4 GHz. 2.4 GHz networks are better at penetrating walls and avoiding obstacles that may be in the signal path. 5 GHz can perform much better over long distances. In my case, I simply went into the router settings and enabled support for the 5 GHz line. This gave me the opportunity not to encounter other Wi-Fi networks.

Let me now show you what settings you need to make for the router. If you do not have support for a 5 GHz network in your router, then, naturally, you will need to use a 2.4 GHz network and simply select the channel that is free according to the graph.

Router settings for stable Wi-Fi operation

Open the browser and enter one of the addresses 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar, depending on the router model. The exact address must be written on the router itself. In my case, the router is Netgear and I am visiting the address 192.168.1.1. I go to the Wi-Fi network section and there are certain settings that allow me to configure the router to the frequencies that I need. Please note that my router supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

On my channel, the 2.4 GHz frequency is on channel 13. This is exactly the channel that is least loaded. You can also use channel 14 on the Netgear router. In my case, it is better to choose the 5 GHz frequency. At 5 GHz, automatic channel selection is selected.

General algorithm for setting up wifi

Thus, the general algorithm for setting up stable Wi-Fi operation is as follows:

  1. Install the Wi-Fi Analyzer application on your smartphone
  2. Let's see which channels are free
  3. Go to the router's Wi-Fi network settings
  4. Select a free channel in the settings (or set the frequency to 5 GHz, if supported)
  5. Save the changes and reboot the router

Wireless Internet is very convenient and modern, but it is not always problem-free. Some glitches that cause a lot of trouble for users appear on their own over and over again. Today we’ll talk about why the Wi-Fi network disappears. As a rule, such incidents are relevant for laptops, which, it would seem, are simply designed to work specifically with wireless networks, supporting the idea of creating an ideal mobile solution.

Since there may be several reasons for the problem, below we will look at each separately. In general, first you will need to do some diagnostics and check if there are any problems with the router's power supply and the device itself. In the case of the first, everything is determined quite simply; to check the second, you need to try connecting other devices to the network - tablets, phones.

If everything works fine, perhaps the problem is only with the computer, and you need to check the operation and settings of its adapter one by one.

Energy saving

The next thing we should do if the Wi-Fi network has disappeared is to carry out diagnostics using the system. Click on the wireless network signal icon and find the “Problem Diagnosis” item, then follow the instructions. Perhaps this option will help you.

Open “Start” and find the “Control Panel” we need. Now we need the settings that are hidden under the “Power Options” icon.

There will be several options here and, if you do not want to set high performance, then you need to select at least “Balanced mode”.

If this option is also unacceptable, you can only configure separate consumption for the adapter. Click “Configure power supply scheme” next to the required option.

Now “Change advanced settings”.

Here we scroll down and find the item “Adapter parameters” - you need to expand the parameter tree, then once again expand the sub-item “Energy Saving” and there in the parameters “from battery” and “from network” set “Maximum performance”.

You have done everything that could be done here - now click “OK”, “Save changes” and close the window.

The second option also, in a sense, depends on the power settings - it happens that when the user puts the computer into sleep mode, after turning on the adapter still remains in this mode.

Click “Start” again and click on “My Computer” and select “Properties”.

There will be a lot of equipment inside it, but we are interested in network adapters. Having opened the tree with them, we look for the one with the Wi-Fi annotation and double-click with the left mouse button.

Here we look for “Power management” and uncheck the “Allow the device to turn off to save energy” checkbox. Next, click “OK” and test how everything works. To be more sure, the best option would be to reboot your device after all these operations.

Sometimes the problem may be due to oxidation of the adapter contacts, failure to connect it after cleaning or repair, or to the device drivers. In the first two cases, only mechanical intervention will help. To update drivers, you need to find the name of your model and go to the manufacturer's official website to download the necessary programs.

This is all that could be done on the computer side if the Wi-Fi network disappeared, and now we will look at solving the problem on the distribution point side.

If the reason is in the router

If after all the checks you come to the conclusion that the problem is with the distribution device, then there is not much you can do: when the router is turned on and working normally, even without special settings and a plugged-in provider cable, the network will be detected and should not disappear.

As mentioned above, check the power supply to the device - perhaps a contact is loose somewhere or the power supply is becoming unusable.

The problem may lie in a crashed firmware, but identifying this is quite difficult, since if there is a failure, you can get into the settings and visually everything will be fine, but the Wi-Fi network still disappears over and over again.

In any case, if the router is already not working correctly, flashing it is unlikely to harm it. Just go to the manufacturer's official website, open the instructions and download the firmware. If after this there is no improvement, then most likely you will have to go for a new router.

Setting up a Wi-Fi router is not so difficult, however, after this, despite the fact that in general everything works, a wide variety of problems are possible, and the most common of them include loss of Wi-Fi signal, as well as low Internet speed (which especially noticeable when downloading files) via Wi-Fi. Let's see how to fix this.

I will warn you in advance that this instruction and solution do not apply to those situations when, for example, when downloading from a torrent, the Wi-Fi router simply freezes and does not react to anything until it is rebooted. One of the most common reasons why a Wi-Fi connection drops

First, what exactly does it look like and specific symptoms by which you can determine that the Wi-Fi connection disappears for this very reason:

  • A phone, tablet or laptop sometimes connects to Wi-Fi and sometimes doesn't, with almost no logic.
  • The speed over Wi-Fi, even when downloading from local resources, is too low.
  • The Wi-Fi connection disappears in one place, not far from the wireless router; there are no serious obstacles.

Perhaps I described the most common symptoms. So, the most common reason for their appearance is that your wireless network is using the same channel that is used by other Wi-Fi access points in the neighborhood. As a result of this, due to interference and “clogging” of the channel, such things appear. The solution is quite obvious: change the channel, because in most cases, users leave the Auto value, which is set in the default router settings.

Of course, you can try these steps at random, trying different channels until you find the most stable one. But you can approach the matter more intelligently - determine in advance the most free channels.

How to find an open Wi-Fi channel

If you have an Android phone or tablet, I recommend using different instructions:

First of all, download the free inSSIDer program to your computer from the official website http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/. ( UPD: The program has become paid. But they have a free version for Android). This utility will allow you to easily scan all wireless networks in your environment and graphically display information about the distribution of these networks by channels. (See picture below).

Signals from two wireless networks overlap

Let's figure out what is shown on this graph. My access point, the site uses channels 13 and 9 (not all routers can use two channels at once for data transmission). Note that you can see that another wireless network is using the same channels. Accordingly, we can assume that problems with Wi-Fi communication are caused by this factor. But channels 4, 5 and 6, as you can see, are free.

Let's try changing the channel. The general idea is to choose the channel that is as far away from any other sufficiently strong wireless signals as possible. To do this, go to the router settings and go to the wireless Wi-Fi network settings () and specify the required channel. After that, apply the changes.

As you can see, the picture has changed for the better. Now, with a high degree of probability, the loss of Wi-Fi speed will not be so significant, and incomprehensible connection breaks will not be so frequent.

It is worth noting that each wireless network channel is separated by 5 MHz from the other, while the channel width can be 20 or 40 MHz. Thus, when choosing, for example, channel 5, the neighboring ones - 2, 3, 6 and 7 - will also be affected.

Just in case: this is not the only reason why the speed through the router may be low or the Wi-Fi connection may be interrupted, although it is one of the most common. This can also be caused by unstable firmware, problems with the router itself or the receiver device, as well as problems with the power supply (voltage jumps, etc.). You can read more about solving various problems when setting up a Wi-Fi router and the operation of wireless networks.

In this article we will talk about what to do if the WiFi network on your laptop turns off spontaneously. It is worth noting that the operating system is completely unimportant here, since such problems occur on XP, Windows 7 and 8. It is very important to analyze all the reasons, since not every user is able to figure it out on their own.

Also, such problems occur on a variety of models of wireless Wi-Fi adapters. Since the point here is not at all about the manufacturer or company, but about the principle of operation and system settings of the operating system. So, let's get down to business.

The wireless connection on a laptop may turn off on its own for the following reasons:

  • Shutdown to save power.
  • Weak Wi-Fi signal.
  • Driver malfunctions.

These are all the reasons why the WiFi network on a laptop turns off. All of them can be easily fixed by making some settings or reinstalling the driver for wireless equipment. Let's look at all the points in more detail.

Weak signal and sources of interference

Very often, the reason why the WiFi network on a laptop constantly turns off is a weak signal and various sources of interference. The fact is that, like any other radio signal, WiFi can also fluctuate. That is, the signal level is not stable.

It changes under the influence of certain factors:

  • Voltage in the electrical network.
  • Various electrical appliances that create strong interference with the WiFi signal.
  • Metal objects located between the signal source and the laptop.

If your computer is located far enough from the router, the signal level may disappear from time to time. Because of this, a disconnection from the network occurs. The fact is that the signal itself fluctuates a little. If the computer is located close to the router. It's unnoticeable. However, when the signal level reaches 8-10%, such fluctuations can cause a break in the Wi-Fi connection.

Also in this case, interference may be caused by various metal objects located between the laptop and the router. It’s even worse if there is any device nearby that creates interference. For example, a mobile phone or a microwave oven. To fix this problem, simply move your computer closer to the WiFi router.

Why Wi-Fi turns off on a Windows 8 laptop: Video

Disabling the WiFi adapter to save energy

One of the most important factors in a laptop is its autonomy. Therefore, the developers created a program to save energy. According to it, if you do not use a module for a certain time, it automatically turns off. Also with a Wi-Fi connection adapter. It may turn off spontaneously if you do not use it.

But there are also cases when the program does not work very stably and the connection regularly breaks down at certain intervals, regardless of whether you use the Internet or not. In this case, you just need to disable this function on your laptop.

To do this, click on the battery icon in the tray (lower right corner of the desktop). From the menu that appears, select "Advanced power options."

A window will open where you can select a power plan. Here you need to go to “Power Plan Settings”. We are interested in the parameters of the type you are using (it is better to do further steps for all types).

So, now click “Change advanced power settings”. In the window that opens, simply find the “Wireless network adapter settings” item. Open a thread. You will see "Power Saving Mode". Open it.

Articles on the topic

Now you see all the modes available to you:

  • From the network.
  • From battery.

In both cases, select “Maximum performance”. This means that the function of automatically turning off the WiFi adapter to save energy is inactive. This will keep your wireless module from disconnecting.

You have done the above steps, but WiFi still turns off. This suggests that your operating system is also configured to save power. To disable this feature, you should open the Network and Sharing Center.

This is done by right-clicking on the WiFi network icon in the tray. Next, select the appropriate item. In the window that opens, we are interested in the “Changing adapter parameters” section. Here we simply find the shortcut for the wireless network (or wireless network connection) and right-click on it. Select “Properties”.

After this, a menu will open. We are interested in the “Network” tab. In it, click the “Configure” button. Next, select the “Power Management” tab. Here you just need to uncheck the “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” checkbox. Click “Ok” and close all windows.

Why Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting: Video

Checking the functionality of Wi-Fi hardware drivers

Why does the WiFi network turn off on a laptop? The above steps did not help, what should I do? This indicates that the hardware drivers are not working correctly. To check this, press the Windows + R key combination, in the window that appears, write the following command - mmc devmgmt.msc and press “Enter”. This will open the Device Manager. Here we are interested in “Wireless adapters”. Open a branch and check if any module is highlighted with an exclamation mark. In addition, the name of the wireless equipment should include its name and full model, for example, Broadcom 802.11n Wireless Network Adapter. If you just see “Wireless equipment” or “Wireless Network Adapter”, then you should update the driver.

A failure can also occur as a result of power outages or due to a large number of subscribers. All these reasons have one effect - the router freezes. To fix this, simply reboot it. Unplug the WiFi router's power supply from the outlet for 7-10 minutes, then plug it back in. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to completely eliminate this phenomenon, since budget devices are simply not able to withstand high loads without negative consequences and at some point they will still fail.

Electronic gadgets: computers, laptops, smartphones and tablets are found in every home. To ensure that all devices receive unlimited access to the Internet, users install routers in their apartments. These devices provide wireless access to the network from a single exit point. But here people are faced with a situation where the Internet periodically disappears through the router. We'll tell you how to solve the problem yourself, without involving specialists.

wi fi can disappear on any device

Possible reasons

If the Internet speed fluctuates, check the router's access to the network. When access is stable, the indicators should glow a steady green light. When there is a problem on the line, the indicators flash. The network disappears due to interference or incorrect device settings. You can solve the situation by rebooting the router; there is a button on the back panel for this.

WATCH THE VIDEO

If the Wi-Fi connection is lost, the following messages are displayed on the monitor screen:

  • No internet access. The problem is caused by an incorrect connection or a problem with the line. In this case, the Internet via cable connection and remote access disappears.
  • Obtaining an IP address. due to incorrect network settings. Check the setting in Network Sharing Center.
  • Lost connection. If it is constant, adjust the power setting. In particular, disable disabling network adapters to save power.

If the signal is unstable and the speed leaves much to be desired, contact your provider’s technical support.

Important! The provider's responsibilities do not include setting up a home connection if this item is not specified in the connection agreement!

If there are no technical faults on the line, but the signal level is still low, perhaps the problem lies in the reception. If Wi-Fi on your phone is lost, move your gadget closer to the access point. The speed has increased, which means there is interference on the path between the device and the router. The way out would be to install an additional amplifying antenna. When the signal level does not depend on the distance between the device and the access point, you need to look for a free connection channel. This situation is typical for apartment buildings, where several routers operate at the same frequency. Let's look at how to solve this problem.

How to connect to a free frequency?

If Wi-Fi on the router has disappeared, then you need to install the InSSIDer program on your computer. The application will scan for available wireless networks and display free channels with a graphical image.

Please note that the utility costs money. The free version is only available for Android mobile devices.

Let's understand how the utility works.

From the same graph it is clear that the fourth channel is free. To troubleshoot connection problems, you need to connect the router to a different frequency.

Please note that it is recommended to select a channel that is farthest away from other frequencies in use. It is worth considering that the frequency width varies between 20-40 MHz, and the channels are located 5 MHz from one another. Accordingly, the selected frequency will invariably overlap with neighboring ones. Choosing the right channel will fix the problem when the laptop loses the Wi-Fi network. It is worth noting that router models have from 11 to 13 channels of available connection, so reconfiguring the device will not be difficult.

If the network on your phone disappears, the mobile application will help. This utility will not only determine the free frequency, but will also help check the quality of reception at various points in the apartment. The application displays a graphical representation of wireless networks, allowing you to select the optimal frequency. Thanks to this, you can correct the situation when Wi-Fi on your tablet or mobile device disappears.

Other options

You need to check the default settings of the router.

  1. The installed parameters must match the recommended ones. If there are discrepancies, the device does not work correctly. Some routers may not be able to handle the flow of information.
  2. In addition, budget models do not support dual-frequency operation. High speed and dual-stream connection overheat the router. The result is unstable operation and causeless connection breaks. In this case, the solution to the problem is to replace the router.

There are several options for getting out of the situation; using the tips provided, you can establish a stable wireless connection in your apartment.
