I was once asked if there is a program that opens all files. The simple answer seems to be that such a program does not exist in nature.

But if you think about it, it’s a stretch to consider such a program an operating system.

Why is it a stretch? Each file has a name, which includes: Nadezda.txt, where the file name is Nadezda and the extension is .txt. The extension is the lifesaver with which the Windows operating system finds the desired program and opens this file.

For example, the operating system sees that the file has a .txt extension, and it immediately understands that this file can be opened using

Thus, the operating system finds a suitable program in its “bins” based on the file extension and uses it to open the file.

Windows developers specifically made file extensions hidden, because if you change them “out of the blue,” then such a file will no longer be open. File extensions can be made open, for example, It is best to look at the file extensions and then make them hidden again.

Typically, the operating system opens files using programs. Next, we'll look at how to open a file with a program other than the default one. More precisely, how to quickly make such a setting so that all files with a certain extension are opened by the program that we like, and NOT the one that the operating system offers us on the sly, that is, by default.

Not all versions popular system Windows provided a centralized tool that would allow easy control of file types and the applications that open them by default.

Newly installed programs often offer themselves as default programs for opening certain types of files. And users who install these programs quite often agree with this. For example, during the process of installing new programs, simply without even noticing the corresponding checkbox, which may be by default.

It would seem, what is the problem? And the fact is that when you delete this earlier installed program the operating system is forced to again “assign” some other program to open files of this type.

And what program will it (the operating system) assign? Perhaps not at all what it was before installation new program, which was subsequently deleted.

Users who, for example, watch videos with the .mp4 extension can quite often encounter this problem.

  • Then the operating system easily and simply opens these files for viewing,
  • otherwise at some point in time it only allows you to listen to the audio track, but does not show the video,
  • or even refuses to open files with this extension at all.

The reason is precisely that the PC user either installs some programs for watching videos and makes them the default programs, then deletes them again.

Thus, users who actively install and uninstall programs in the first place may encounter serious confusion in the process of running programs on the computer. This means you need to know how the default program selection mechanism works, which would allow you to eliminate this confusion, and ultimately bring complete order to the selection of default programs.

Step-by-step setup for installing default programs in Windows 8

1) To launch the panel centralized settings programs use the default interface.

2) Launch the Control Panel, the easiest way to do this is through Search, more about this

Rice. 1 Open the list of all programs installed on the computer in the “Control Panel”

The “Programs” window appears (Fig. 2), in which we will open the list of “Default Programs” (click on the link indicated by number 1 in Fig. 2):

Rice. 2 Open the list of Default Programs in the “Programs” window

4) A window appears with the title “Select programs used by Windows by default”, shown in Fig. 3.

Rice. 3 Go to view the default programs

After which the screen will display a complete list of all programs installed (installed) on your computer (Fig. 4):

Rice. 4 Now you can select the default program at your discretion

5) After selection the desired program in the list (number 1 in Fig. 4), a link “Use this program as default” will appear on the right (number 2 in Fig. 4).

This will match the selected program with all supported file extensions by default, i.e. All file extensions supported by the program will now be opened by this program.

6) You can also use the “Select default values for this program” item (number 3 in Fig. 4), which will allow the user to manually specify file extensions that will be opened by this program by default.

Click on this item, and then the “Specify program comparisons” window opens (Fig. 5):

Rice. 5 Select file extensions that should be opened by default by the program specified earlier (in Fig. 4)

Here we see a list of extensions (Fig. 5) that the selected program (number 1 in Fig. 4) can open correctly.

Configuration is carried out by deleting or checking the boxes next to extensions.

At the end of the settings, click the “Save” button (number 2 in Fig. 5) to save the changes made.

For example, a checkmark opposite .mp4 (number 1 in Fig. 5) means that videos in this format will be opened by default Windows player Media.

If, in the end, the default program does not open files with the given extensions, then you should change it to the default program that can do this without problems. Most often similar problem Happens when opening and playing video files. This is due to the fact that the video industry is developing very dynamically, and software(even in conditions of constant receipt automatic updates) cannot keep up with these changes.

About setting default programs in Windows 7, XP and Mac OS

It is also important to note that a similar mechanism for setting up programs by default is in the Windows 7 operating system.

In more in simple form it was also in Windows XP - this is no longer a supported or developed version of the Windows operating system. That is, Windows 8 is not a pioneer in this sense; the default program settings mechanism was developed in more earlier versions operating system. But in Windows 8 it took on modern forms.

On Mac OS (for Mac computers) there are also default program settings, but there these settings are minimal. Mac OS developers prefer not to trust users with such important work, because if you make a mistake in the default program settings, you can seriously “damage” the operating system.

For us, users of the Windows operating system, it is important to understand that files created on a Mac and then viewed on Windows require installation in Windows special programs. Since programmers who make programs for OS, produced by Microsoft, did not include the appropriate capabilities and requirements.

For example, video QuickTime files can only be viewed when installed under Windows applications QuickTime. Also, to work with an iPod connected to a Windows PC, you need iTunes program. And the list goes on. The main thing is that in such cases, installing standard Windows OS programs will not lead to success; you need special software.

Friends, hello everyone! Today I’ll tell you a little about Windows 8, because I had to familiarize myself with this system and not everything turned out to be easy at the very beginning, but the next day I figured it out a little and I really liked Windows 8. In this article I will briefly talk about where the Start button is and how to launch programs in Windows 8 if problems arise.

Start button and running programs Windows 8

So, my acquaintance with Windows 8 began just recently, I bought new laptop, since mine did not handle video processing in the program Camtasia Studio and other programs, since these programs eat up a lot of resources. All this reduced productivity and took away valuable time. I ended up purchasing a new laptop with processor CORE i-7 on this moment one of the best. What is also important is that my purchase cost me very little, considering the configuration. In general, what is sold for 40,000 - 50,000 rubles cost only 25,900, a little analysis, searching for reviews and a couple of consultations helped me save more than 20,000 rubles. But that is another story. If you are interested, you can look at the information about my purchase, I think it will not be difficult to do this. My laptop, for this price, is just a plane.

For example, my old laptop I processed a 100 MB video in about 15-20 minutes, and this one does the same in 2-3 minutes, I am very pleased with the purchase. In general, there was no limit to my joy, but when I began to transfer all the programs to Windows 8, since 8 was already installed on the laptop from the beginning, I was faced with the fact that half of my programs did not work. The joy had dried up and the problem had to be solved, but more on that below. In the meantime, I’ll tell you where the start button is on Windows 8.

To be honest, the first 10-15 minutes of Windows 8 gave me a stupor, although I have considerable experience working on a computer, but there was still confusion. In fact, there were instructions, quite clear and with the main functions, in principle, everything there is clear. But we always do everything ourselves and don’t always look at the instructions; I actually found it on the third day, when I started removing the box from my laptop :)

It turns out everything is simple and convenient, the start button can be found by moving the mouse to the lower left corner and a menu will open. "Start", there you can sort icons, add and remove unnecessary ones. In order to delete an icon, just right-click on it and a menu will open at the bottom with various settings, everything is simple there and each button is labeled in detail. Also menu "Start" in Windows 8 can be opened by pressing a keyboard shortcut "Windows + C" and click Start, you will see the button in the menu on the right. If you don’t know what the Windows button is, it’s located on the keyboard at the bottom left, it’s the third one on the laptop and the second one on the keyboard regular computer (Windows icon- window). You can also get to the start menu by simply pressing this button, just press the button Windows and that's all.

Being in this menu, you can click on free space right-click and an icon of all programs will appear at the bottom; if you click on it, then all the programs that are on your computer will open and you can select the icons you need and configure them at your discretion. There you will find everything required functions and conductor. Explorer is additionally displayed in the taskbar, which will allow you to quickly find the desired folder. In general, there are no difficulties, everything is quite simple and convenient. By the way, in order to get to Desktop in Windows 8, just click on the Desktop icon in the Start panel or simply press the Esc key. But in order to make everything more clear to you, I recorded a video lesson, which I will post below. And now I’ll tell you how to run programs on Windows 8 if it doesn’t start.

Running programs in Windows 8 (compatibility)

As I said above, after I started transferring and installing the programs I needed on Windows 8, I ran into a problem. The programs refused to work and produced an error. I had to solve this and I turned not only to my friends, but also, of course, to the Internet. Specific solution I didn’t find it, everyone suggested doing one thing, that is to demolish Windows 8 and install seven, but not for everyone this is a way out. Not everyone can install the system, and installation disk you need to either buy or download on a torrent or pay the installer for the work, in general these are additional costs. Of course, I would have demolished the system and installed Windows 7, but I decided to look for a simpler solution and it was found.

Everything is quite simple, you need to run programs in "Compatibility mode", on one of the forums I found a mention of this, but did not attach any importance, in the end I still decided this problem. After you installed the program, for me it was Photoshop, and I also had to use this trick on Dreamweaver, in general, after installing the program, right-click on the shortcut and select "Properties", in the window that opens, look for "Compatibility" and check the box “Run in compatibility mode”, select Windows 7, check the box below "Run this program as an administrator", apply the settings and then run the program and everything will work fine.

See screenshot below

As you can see, it’s a pretty simple solution and there’s no need to reinstall the system; Windows 8 works great. The main thing is to figure it out a little and everything will be great. Below I have recorded a couple of short videos for you, in which I will show you everything that is written about in this article.

P.S. If you are not very familiar with computers or your loved ones always ask you to teach them how to use a computer, then there is something for you perfect solution. At one time, my family just“got” me - teach me, teach me!But I am alone, and there are many of them. Then I just bought it for themelectronic versions of thismanuals and the trick is in the bag,now I'm calm.
