The South Korean company Samsung is the main competitor of the American Apple and its phone models are the most popular in the segment of Android gadgets. Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is the main Android flagship of 2017, with which the Koreans joined the new trend for minimal frames and achieved incredible success in it. It was with him that the manufacturer put an end to the 16:9 aspect ratio and with it he finally abandoned flat screens in the new flagship models.

Advantages of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus mobile phone

Perhaps the main feature of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is its unusual design with a display curved at the edges and rounded at the corners with minimal frames, thanks to which the device looks amazing and causes a “wow” effect. Samsung has announced the release of two flagships at once. In addition to the Samsung Galaxy S8, a larger copy will go on sale - the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus - the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge smartphone in everything, but not in name.

The flagship Samsung Galaxy S8, like the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, is equipped with a curved display, however, other differences between the new products are less obvious than the differences between the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge models. And in order for you to have a clearer idea, we have prepared a review for you in which we will tell you about the common and different features of the two flagships.

Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus: Comparison of New Galaxy

Display

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has a curved display, which the Samsung Galaxy S7 cannot boast of, however, the new Samsung smartphones do not have such differences - both the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus are equipped with curved displays. It is for this reason that the word “Edge” was removed from the name (English Edge - edge, smooth).

Both smartphones are created with support for Super AMOLED technology, the aspect ratio of the smartphones is 18.5:9, the display has a resolution of 1440x2960 pixels (for comparison, the resolution of last year's smartphones was 1440x2560 pixels).

Thus, as you may have guessed, the main difference between the flagships is size: the Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone has a 5.8-inch display, and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus has a 6.2-inch display.

It's also worth noting that the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus display is more polished, but this difference is unlikely to be of much interest to you, since the number of pixels is the same on both smartphones.

Design

The flagships Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus have almost the same design with a metal frame covered with glass on both sides, tiny frames above and below the display.

The developers abandoned physical buttons, and moved the fingerprint scanner to the rear panel of the case. Both the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus are waterproof and dustproof.

As mentioned earlier, the main differences between the flagships relate to size. The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S8 are 148.9x68x8mm, while the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is 159x74x8mm. As we can see, they are the same in thickness, however, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is much wider and longer.

These dimensions allow us to call the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus a “teleshet” - a smartphone with a very large display, which is more typical for tablets than for phones. Even the classic Samsung Galaxy S8 is considered large, and yet, you could not even imagine that these flagships would feature displays of such impressive sizes.

By practically abandoning the frame, the company's developers managed to make the classic smartphone Samsung Galaxy S8 smaller than the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus almost the same size as the iPhone 7 Plus.

Of course, due to its size, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is heavier than the Samsung Galaxy S8, although you won't feel much of a difference.

Operating system and power

In terms of power and operating system, there is no difference between the smartphones, just as there is no significant difference between the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus in principle, however, different versions of smartphones are provided for different regions.

Both smartphones have 4GB of RAM, but the architecture may vary depending on where you live. Samsung did not specify the names of the processors that were used in development, but we know that the processors are eight-core with a clock frequency of 2.35 GHz.

It is likely that the smartphone will be equipped with a Snapdragon 835 processor in the United States, and Exynos 8895 in Europe and most other regions.

If there is any difference between the above-mentioned processors, you should not worry about it - both processors are high-end and high-tech.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus and the classic Samsung Galaxy S8 run Android Nougat with Samsung's TouchWiz UI.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus smartphones have identical single-lens 12 megapixel cameras, which are practically no different from the cameras of last year’s flagships Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Samsung Galaxy S7.

But the front camera has already been improved: both the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus have an 8-megapixel front camera, and the S7 line was equipped with a 5-megapixel front camera. Naturally, it’s not just about megapixels, so you can learn about the quality of the cameras of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus smartphones from more detailed reviews.

Battery and Power

Apart from the display size, the battery is the other most important difference between the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus smartphones, as the developers used more space in the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus to fit a 3500 mAh battery, although the classic Samsung Galaxy S8 has a battery with a capacity of only 3000mAh.

This is a very questionable change for both smartphones, given the size of the phones that charge such batteries. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is the same size as the Samsung Galaxy S7, and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus has an even smaller battery than the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, which has a 3600mAh battery.

This is a very depressing circumstance, however, perhaps this decision was made to avoid repeating the history of the Samsung Note 7 batteries. Moreover, given the more energy efficient processors, the batteries of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus can last longer than the batteries of similar capacities in other phones (we'll definitely tell you about this when we test them). Both smartphones also support high-speed charging via a Type C USB port.

Price

The flagship Samsung Galaxy S8 will cost $720, making it one of the most expensive smartphones available on sale. If you want to buy the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus on the first day it goes on sale, it will cost you $825, so you'll have to shell out a little more money for a larger smartphone.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus smartphones do not have many differences. If previously Samsung differentiated flagships by the presence or absence of a curved display, now all models, without exception, are curved.

Smartphones, one way or another, have become boring, performance no longer surprises anyone, and there have been no successful experiments for a long time, we have seen many smartphones with dual cameras, the implementation of which often let us down, we have seen modular smartphones that, for the most part, were failures and Quite recently, a new trend has emerged - frameless smartphones, which prompted manufacturers to think about design and ergonomics. Today we are reviewing the main representative of frameless smartphones - the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, and let's find out if it is as good as they say it is.

Design, assembly, ease of use

Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is exactly the device whose review you want to start with the first impression, and not with general phrases about versions, colors, prices, etc. Because of my work, I often have to change smartphones, sometimes even two or three times a week, and I don’t even remember the last device that really surprised me with something outwardly. And then comes the review of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus and the first impression is simply delight, a black, seemingly endless screen, neat little curves of the screen smoothly flowing through the polished metal frame on the back side which skillfully plays with light and, however, I’m not even embellishing, You can take a look at the Samsung demo zone for yourself and see for yourself what I said.
Samsung is erasing boundaries and limitations, now there are two versions of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus and there are only four differences between them: battery capacity, screen size, respectively, dimensions and weight. Therefore, what was said in this review is also relevant for the younger model. Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus in Russia is presented in the following colors: black diamond, mystical amethyst and yellow topaz (which came to us for review).
The front part of the smartphone is completely covered with black Gorilla Glass 5, which, together with the display, is curved at the edges, and if once in the Galaxy Note Edge this was pursued for the sake of the idea of additional workspace and a separate screen area, now it can be said to be a design “feature” and such a downgrade only benefited the flagship; there are no accidental clicks on this area, but the ergonomics and appearance were not affected in any way. Due to the rounded display, the side frames are practically invisible, which gives a simply unforgettable effect, and the space above and below the screen is simply minimal and, yes, now there is no Samsung logo on the front panel or a physical key. Samsung did not completely remove the familiar control element, but moved the key to the screen and it is always backlit, so if, when the screen is locked, you easily touch this area, the smartphone will not react at all, but if you press harder, it will seem to respond to the key with vibration feedback, which is much more better implemented than in the Huawei P10 Plus, but it’s still a long way from the iPhone.

The space above the display is occupied by light and proximity sensors, a camera, a speaker and a retinal scanner, and below the display is empty, however, it is difficult to add anything else.

The back side of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is also completely covered with Gorilla Glass 5, which is slightly rounded at the edges of the body; it houses the main camera, which does not protrude, a flash, a heart rate monitor window and a fingerprint scanner, which, for some reason, was placed to the right of cameras, firstly, it can often be confused with a camera, and, accordingly, the optics can be dirty, and secondly, on the Galaxy S8 Plus it is not always convenient to reach it. And then, of course, Samsung will say that there is a retinal scanner, which, by the way, I began to actively use, but they cannot confirm payment through Samsung Pay, and even in the dark it works so-so.
The frame of the case is made of polished metal; at the top end there is a microphone and a combined tray for two nano-Sim or one nano-Sim and a MicroSD memory card up to 2 TB. At the bottom end there is a 3.5 mm mini-Jack, they haven’t forgotten about it, fast USB Type C version 3.1 for charging and synchronization, a microphone and a speaker grille.

The left side is occupied by a volume rocker and a key to call the Bixby assistant, which we will talk about later in this review. The right side is occupied only by the lock key.

All elements of the case fit perfectly, this is also evidenced by protection against water and dust according to the IP68 standard, it can survive immersion to a depth of up to a meter and lie there for up to an hour. Of course, I wouldn’t experiment like that, but it easily survives all sorts of everyday accidents and rain.
If we talk about ergonomics, then this is the most convenient smartphone with a screen diagonal over 6″, taking into account the fact that its diagonal is 6.2″. You can even say it differently: most recently I tested Huawei P10 Plus, which has a screen diagonal of 5.5″ and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, not only is it the same in width, it also lies more pleasantly in the hand due to its wider ergonomic shape.

Display

The display of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is made using Super AMOLED technology - bright, contrasting, with natural black color, without the typical AMOLED green, with the ability to transmit content of the HDR 10 standard, Quad HD+ resolution (2960 x 1440) and a pixel density of 529 PPI.
As you can see, it is elongated, and its aspect ratio is 18.5:9. On the one hand, this is cool and movies expand to the full screen, but on the other hand, for now you will have to endure black stripes at the top and bottom, since not all applications (mainly heavy games) have learned to expand to the entire screen, but the built-in “stretcher” The screen sometimes causes application elements to be placed incorrectly. In general, we are waiting for the developers to work hard, because this ratio is the future.

Let's go back to the screen. Its viewing angles are maximum, the brightness is adjustable over a very wide range, at minimum brightness even in complete darkness the screen does not hurt the eyes, you can also activate the blue filter, and in bright sunlight the display, as they say, has more than enough brightness. Adaptive adjustment works correctly, smoothly adjusting brightness without sudden, incomprehensible jumps.
If something in the color rendition does not suit you, you can correct everything right in the settings, there are both ready-made profiles and precise adjustments by channel: red, blue, green, as well as selection of the color temperature of the display, as a whole, so do the edges. It is also possible to switch the display resolution. And personally, I always go to FullHD+, there is no difference, and the battery is consumed less.

Cameras

Let's start with the camera app. It is quite easy to use and has a nice interface, all the main elements are on the main screen, swiping to the left opens a menu of modes, which can also be downloaded separately, and swiping to the right opens a menu of color effects. The settings menu, in turn, is intelligently and conveniently sorted.

This time Samsung did not resort to something radically new, but used the good old ones. The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus has the same module as the Galaxy S7/S7 Edge, but the distortion has been corrected and the software algorithms have been improved. The main camera is a 12 megapixel module with an F/1.7 aperture, the well-known fast Dual Pixel focusing system and optical stabilization. The pictures come out of good quality. And I will publish more detailed information on June 14, 2017, when we determine who takes photos better than the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus or Huawei P10 Plus. So, vote and subscribe to our VKontakte group in order not to miss the results.

Video shooting is possible in a maximum resolution of UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) 30 frames per second. Video examples are below.

The front camera has been updated. Now its resolution is 8.0 megapixels, the optical aperture is F/1.7 and there is autofocus. Overall, I liked the quality of the photos on the front camera.

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus can be equipped with an eight-core Exynos 8895 processor or a similar Snapdragon 835 processor, and the main thing that these processors have in common is a 10-nanometer process technology. And reducing the technical process brings less heat, greater performance with a smaller chip size and greater energy efficiency. The processor is paired with Mali-G71 or Adreno 540 graphics, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 64GB of built-in fast UFS 2.0 memory. Now let’s keep it simple, regardless of the processor version and graphics, it’s hard to find fault with the performance of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, it’s definitely one of the fastest Android smartphones, yes, the Google Pixel is a fraction of a second faster, but is this really noticeable in everyday use? ? No. Benchmarks, in turn, show consistently high performance.

Gaming performance is excellent. Any games run at maximum settings without a hint of FPS drop to an uncomfortable level.

Software

Samsung must be given its due: the Samsung Experience interface was a success, it became more similar to stock Android, but it only looks nicer, neater, and the system elements are brought into the same style as much as possible. The system also has a lot of settings, additional software functions, gestures, etc. It is also worth noting Samsung Health - one of the most advanced applications that will help you monitor your activity and your health.

Now a little about the Bixby assistant, it will be cool and smart, it will recognize objects and objects, and also work with complex phrases, but for now the key phrase is “will”, and for now it is practically useless.

Autonomy

The battery capacity of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is 3500 mAh and, it would seem, this is very small with a 6.2″ screen diagonal, but do not forget about the new energy-efficient hardware. And in intensive use mode, the smartphone lasts for a day of use with 3.5 - 4 hours of screen on, which, by the way, is very good.

Locks and scanners

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus has a fingerprint scanner, very fast and error-free, and a retinal scanner, which simply has nothing to compare with, works quickly in good lighting, but unlocking the smartphone at night becomes much more difficult.
What’s interesting and secure is a personal folder that hides files and even applications in encrypted form and you won’t be able to access them without a password or a finger/retina scan.

Sound

I have no complaints about the conversational speaker or the ringing speaker, they sound good and don’t wheeze at maximum volume, but I would like stereo, at least in the same version as on the IPhone.

But for headphone music lovers, there is good news and bad news. Let's start with the good: there is a good DAC Cirrus Logic CS43130 or Aqstic WCD9341, the sound is clear, perfectly detailed with uncluttered frequencies, and now let's move on to the bad: there is no operational amplifier and you won't be able to drive expensive high-impedance headphones.

Impressions from Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus

I have already described my first impression of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, and these two weeks that were allotted to me for testing only improved my impressions of the smartphone, yes, it does not offer anything radically new, something that no one has shown before, but it offers the best that smartphones currently have: a frameless, attractive design, ideal ergonomics with such diagonals, an impeccable display, maximum performance, a good camera, normal battery life and, of course, high cost, because the price of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is 59,990 rubles, and Samsung Galaxy S8 - 54,990, but this issue needs to be approached differently. Are there any worthy alternatives on the market now? No, of course there is the LG G6, but it looks much worse and uses older hardware, there is the IPhone 7 Plus, which next to the Galaxy S8 Plus looks like a smartphone from the last century, there are a lot of alternatives, but only Samsung could offer such a high level of experience in Galaxy S8/S8 Plus and these smartphones deservedly receive an award from our editors - Best Choice!
Are there any shortcomings or what would you like to change? Yes, the location of the fingerprint scanner is not the most convenient, and I would like a tray for both SIM cards and memory at once.

Do you often go on business trips and don’t want to overpay for communications? There is no need to buy a new SIM card with an unknown number to your colleagues, now you can make/receive calls over Wi-Fi at the price of calls in Russia for both you and the caller.
