Mobile communications and Internet in Prague - how to save money? Country guide: mobile communications in Germany.

The Czech Republic is beautiful at any time of the year. There is always something for the curious tourist to do here. Beautiful medieval castles, delicious beer, healing Karlovy Vary waters, ski resorts and even the golden beaches of the famous Machovo Lake resort. In addition, the Czech Republic is very beautiful, it fascinates with its architecture and traditions. This country will leave a lot of impressions that you can share with your friends, relatives, and colleagues during your trip. The main thing is to decide on the choice of mobile operator. For prepaid subscribers Czech operators mobile communications have prepared several advantageous offers. Tourists can choose among three major cellular providers. Of course, there are many virtual operators who use the networks of other companies, but provide services under their own brand. But we will focus on the main ones:

  • Vodafone.
  • T-Mobile.

2G/GSM speed works great in all cities (900 and 1800 MHz). As for 3G / UMTS, the data transfer speed is generally 2100 MHz. 4G/LTE is also available to all prepaid subscribers:

  • 800, 900, 1800, 2100 MHz on Vodafone;
  • 800, 1800, 2100 MHz on O2 and T-Mobile.

Today, Vodafone provides the best high-speed Internet to the majority of the population. According to the Czech Telecommunications Authority, 93 percent of people in 76 percent of the territory are able to connect to LTE from Vodafone. Despite the joint efforts of providers O2 and T-Mobile, their figures in 2015 are lower: 82 to 43 percent.

Starter packs can be purchased at branded stores or supermarkets. To top up your account you need to buy vouchers, which are sold:

Unlike other European countries, the account balance in the Czech Republic expires if you do not have time to spend the money. But there is a way out of the situation: if you have money left in your account, you can buy a ticket for public transport, the fare and money for the sent SMS message will be deducted from your account.

Vodafone provides its services in many countries around the world (28). The operator entered the Czech market in 2006 by purchasing the local company Oskar.

Vodafone currently offers good conditions for prepaid subscribers, has better coverage and offers 3G and 4G to customers. High-speed Internet operates at 5 frequencies and covers more than 92 percent of the population. Depending on the selected tariff and region, the data transfer speed can be: 800, 900, 1800, 2100 and 2600 MHz. IN rural areas, as a rule, no more than 900 MHz is available. In big cities - 2100. Before purchasing a starter package, it is important to make sure that your phone supports the required frequency. If you are not so sure, you can rent a Vodafone Hotspot device, which operates on all Czech frequencies. Vodafone's LTE is called “Turbo Internet” and is available to customers at no extra charge.

A prepaid starter package will cost the traveler 200 CZK, the same amount will be credited to his subscriber account. The default PIN code is 1234, to activate the SIM card you don’t need to do anything special, just insert it into the phone. And accept messages for customization.

You can buy a SIM card in the operator’s branded stores, where you can also connect to all the necessary services, including mobile Internet. You cannot top up your account online if you don’t have a Czech bank account. credit card. But you can still top up your mobile phone using your credit card in some stores and supermarkets. Top-up vouchers can also be purchased at various points of sale, in denominations of:

  • 250 CZK.
  • 500 CZK.
  • 1200 CZK.

It is best to connect the Internet package immediately in the company store when purchasing a SIM card. But you can use the service only after you receive a confirmation message about the connection. You can also activate your tariff online. The operator offers the following monthly packages for mobile Internet:

Available volume Cost (in crowns)
500 MB249
1.5 GB399
4 GB519
10 GB999

After activation tariff plan, it remains valid throughout the calendar month, after which the conditions are renewed automatically if the subscriber’s account has cash. If finances are insufficient, then tariff charges will be suspended and only the daily fee, which is set by default, will be charged.

The cost of a minute of conversation may vary depending on the amount of a one-time top-up, so if you top up your account with 100 CZK at once, the cost of one minute of call to other operators will decrease by 1.5 CZK. If you add 800 crowns to your account, a minute will cost 4 crowns, not 6. How more amount, the cheaper and more profitable. Within the network the price per minute is 2.98. Calls in Russia are charged at 8.33, regardless of the package chosen.

You can top up your mobile account at the points of sale described above. The SIM card remains active for 12 months from the date of the last replenishment. Of course, it is difficult to understand the tariffs for cellular communications and Internet in a foreign country, so you can get advice and choose the truly optimal rates for your trip. Today, Euroroaming operates in all Russian cities, which can offer SIM cards and tariffs from all European countries, the most optimal of which are:

Orange(Spain) with tariff Mundo

  • Mundo 1 Gb – 7 euros
  • Mundo 2 Gb – 10 euros
  • Mundo 3 Gb – 15 euros

Internet packages are designed for a month, but they can be extended as needed. And the operator does not limit distribution.

The Estonian operator now has GlobalSim on its cards . For just $19 you can
connect 1 GB or for 2 GB for only $35. The package can be reconnected as needed. You can also configure the distribution to third party devices, if you are eating with a group.

Operator Three offers 12 GB traffic for a month.

For just 48 euros you get 12 GB of Internet in 43 countries. Fast and high-quality Internet connection. The card is only compatible with 3G and 4G smartphones or tablets.

As soon as you come to the Czech Republic as a student, tourist or immigrant, the first thing you need to do is buy a SIM card from some operator cellular communications to call on business or relatives and friends. The Czech Republic is a new country and it is quite difficult to understand operators and tariffs, so in this article I decided to systematize the necessary information.

Major mobile operators

There are 3 main mobile operators in the Czech Republic: Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile. All operators have the same coverage. As for the Internet, depending on the region they are used different technologies wireless communication. EDGE and 3G are used in remote areas of the country, in large cities and in Prague HSPA+ And 4G/LTE.

Vodafone belongs to the Vodafone Group. The number of Vodafone subscribers is more than 400 million people; in the Czech Republic, more than 3 million people use the services of this company.

O2 is not only a large cellular operator, but also a company that provides access to the Internet and access to analogue phones. The company reports 4.8 million subscribers.

T-Mobile is a company that has been providing cellular communication services since 1990. T-Mobile reports 5.8 million active SIM cards.

Virtual operators

In addition to the main cellular operators in Europe, including the Czech Republic, virtual operators are becoming popular. These companies do not have their own networks, but use the networks of the main operators. The main advantage of virtual operators is the low cost of calls. The downside is the lack of offices in convenient locations, a large number of pitfalls, concluding contracts with subscription fee for a year or two or more. There is no point in connecting to such operators for tourists, but residents of the Czech Republic can benefit provided they can find tariffs without pitfalls.

For example, on the company’s website the cost of a minute of call within the Czech Republic is 1 CZK, but the cost calls to Russia or Ukraine may be 20-40 CZK, may be charged SIM card activation fee for 50 CZK, subscription fee not less than 100 CZK, invoicing at the end of the month 60 CZK, even incoming calls from other countries are paid! So before you go cheap, read the entire price list for the cost of services.

Currently in the Czech Republic it works approximately 58 virtual telecom operators, the most popular of them: 99mobile, Tesco Mobile, GoMobil, CallPro, GoMobil, voocall, První Mobil, Metronet

Differences in cellular communications in the Czech Republic

  1. Cellular communications in the Czech Republic are one of the most expensive in Europe, approximate cost per minute call is 5 CZK. That’s why you won’t see people here, either on the street or in transport, constantly bashing and disturbing other people.
  2. No matter how you try to save money, you will not succeed; the tariffs of almost all operators are the same: somewhere you will win, somewhere you will lose.
  3. SIM cards in the Czech Republic are sold freely and without presenting a passport.
  4. You can easily transfer your phone number from one operator to another, however, such pleasure is expensive for virtual operators.
  5. Not in the Czech Republic long distance communication, i.e. No matter where you are, in Prague or Brno, the cost of calls will be the same.

Prepayment, postpayment

Most tariffs for all mobile operators differ depending on the payment method, there are tariffs prepaid and postpaid(Contract). Prepaid tariffs are simple, you just buy a SIM card (Předplacená SIM card) in any office of a cellular operator, in a shopping center, in any kiosk with magazines or in a supermarket. After activating the SIM card, you can immediately use cellular services. When you run out of money, you can top up your account through an ATM, online, or by purchasing a card with a barcode. You can top up your balance in special machines, but there are not many of them in the Czech Republic; they are usually located in shopping centers or in crowded places.

If you come to the Czech Republic for a long time or live here, then it makes sense to choose a tariff according to postpaid, i.e. by concluding a contract (agreement). Such tariffs are much more profitable, but the contract is usually concluded for at least a year, but there is a subscription fee, and the invoice is issued at the end of the month, i.e. you don't know how much money you spent. These tariffs have many pitfalls, so study all the conditions and tariffs thoroughly.

How to choose a mobile operator

If you have just arrived in the Czech Republic, I advise you to simply buy a SIM card Vodafone (Vodafone karta divoká) at the first kiosk you come across and don’t worry. Why Vodafone? Because they have good connection, fair tariffs, many sales offices, a large number of active subscribers (2/3 of my friends in the Czech Republic are connected to Vodafone), and some of the most inexpensive calls to Russia.

After purchasing a SIM card, you need it activate, this is not so easy to do, so ask the sales office to do it.

I don’t recommend the O2 company; when we lived in Germany, they deceived us very much, and we couldn’t get our money back. Plus, in the Czech Republic they like to conclude contracts without agreeing on all the terms, and you will be obliged to pay even if you refuse their services. Plus, in the O2 office we have more than once come across inadequate, unqualified staff.

Tariffs (SMS, calls, internet, roaming)

At the moment, the main cellular operators offer the following prepaid tariffs.

What you should pay attention to when connecting to a mobile operator

When choosing a mobile operator, find out the cost of all services; many prices on the company’s websites are highly hidden:

  1. Cost of a minute of calls within the network
  2. Cost of calls to phones of other mobile operators in the Czech Republic.
  3. Cost of calls within Europe, cost of roaming in Europe.
  4. Cost of international calls to Russia, Ukraine and other countries.
  5. How are calls rounded?
  6. Cost of SMS within the Czech Republic, international SMS.
  7. The cost of the Internet, and under what conditions activation occurs, the volume of traffic.

Emergency numbers

  • Police: 158
  • City police: 156
  • Single European telephone emergency service: 112
  • Ambulance (Zachranna sluzba): 155
  • Fire service (Hasici): 150
  • Roadside assistance: 154 or 123

Living or traveling in Germany, the question often arises: which mobile operators in Germany are better in order to have reliable, high-quality, cheap communication and mobile internet.

At the same time, you can choose a cheap and cool tariff from some operator (for example, from E-Plus, which I recommend to everyone), but it is not a fact that it will work well and stably in your small German town or village.

It's all about network coverage. And if you don’t have to worry too much about voice communications in any region of Germany, then with mobile Internet in some places everything can be very schlecht (bad). There is no 100% 3G and LTE coverage in this country either, and in some places their signal is simply weak (buildings, interference, etc.). In general, despite the rapid expansion of 3G and LTE (4G) (since 2010), there are still many areas in the country where only old and slow GPRS/EDGE (2G) networks are present.

So which mobile operators in Germany and where best provide confident reception in 3G and LTE networks?

Mobile operators in Germany

Let me remind you that in Germany there are 4 most popular mobile operators: T-Mobile, Vodafone, O2 And E-Plus. The last two (O2 and E-Plus) recently announced their merger, but in fact they still conduct their activities separately, only sometimes helping each other in accessing voice communication in certain areas of Germany, if one of them is not present there (this does not apply to the Internet and data transmission).

Below I will talk a little about these operators, and also share my impressions (my own and those of relatives) about their work.
You can also check the coverage (coverage) of the 3G and LTE networks of these German mobile operators in one or another locality Germany, indicating the desired address in a city or village.

Telekom D1 (T-Mobile)

T-Mobile is a division of the German telecommunications holding Deutsche Telekom, operating in the field of mobile communications in Europe.

In terms of market share (~40%) and quality of services, the company occupies a leading position in Germany, but is gradually losing its leadership as other operators grow.

3G and LTE networks are very well developed and developing. Has the most high speeds data transmission, but tariffs are relatively expensive.

In cities 3G (UMTS/HSPA) is very good with maximum speed downloads up to 42.2 Mbit/s. LTE (4G) is already available in more than 50 German cities with a maximum speed of 100 Mbit/s. Even in rural areas, 4G coverage continues to grow.

Vodafone D2

Vodafone D2 is the German division of the British company Vodafone Group plc, one of the world's largest cellular operators.

It has a market share of about 35-36% and confidently ranks 2nd among the 4 main providers.

3G networks are also quite well developed. On flat terrain, Vodafone's 3G radio towers provide high-speed internet up to 42.2 Mbps.

LTE (4G) is also doing well, but is still slightly worse than T-Mobile. I have not heard or seen Vodafone LTE speeds above 50 Mbit/s.

O2 Germany

The German “daughter” of the Spanish Telefonica, operating in the country under the brand O2.

O2 Germany's 3G network is mainly concentrated in large and medium-sized cities and along roads. In some small towns and especially in rural areas, O2 customers will unfortunately not be able to use 3G.
The LTE network began to develop in 2010, but is still far behind the first two operators. Present only in some cities in Germany.

Main brands of O2:

E-Plus

E-Plus is the German division of the Dutch cellular operator KPN.

The situation with 3G at E-Plus is similar to that at O2, perhaps even a little worse in terms of equipment along roads.
Since 2013, the operator began working on the development LTE networks, but it can be said that there is almost none. However, many 3G radio towers have been upgraded and now offer speeds of up to 42.2 Mbps.

In general, things are not so bad for the operator, and the same project can serve as an example.

In 2014, E-Plus was acquired by Telefonica Deutschland, owner of O2, to merge into single network. Telefónica combines both networks either by national roaming between them, or the E-Plus network integration in O2. By 2017, it is planned to fully integrate both networks, and E-Plus will be switched off in 2018.

Main E-Plus brands:

In general, it can be stated that almost all mobile operators in Germany provide good quality communications. In terms of coverage of 3G networks and especially LTE (4G), the positions of Telekom D1 (T-Mobile) and Vodafone D2 are much higher than those of O2 Germany and E-Plus. Well, as far as the cost of services is concerned, it’s up to you to choose!

When coming to Germany, you will definitely need a German SIM card for calls within the country, which you will make more and more often over time. The services of German operators are very expensive compared to domestic prices, so you need to choose wisely.

In this article we will look at four leading German cellular operators: O2, Vodafone, T-Mobile. There used to be an operator BASE (e-plus)+, but it was bought out by O2.

Update: The prices listed below were current at the time of writing. Today in Germany there are dozens of low-cost operators and hundreds of tariffs that cannot be listed in article format. I talk more about this in a new article.

O2

When I was studying at Hull, O2 was touted as the “student operator” and the best cell phone service, and that two out of three people, if not everyone, used it.

As it turned out later, this is not entirely true: during public surveys in Munich, the majority do not know what operator they have, and the rest were equally divided between all four of the above-mentioned business “sharks” and discount chains.

So, at the time of writing, O 2 offers three options for the services provided: a contract without a minimum period, a contract with a minimum period, and prepayment. For each of these options, school-student actions are periodically held (hence the talk about “youth” O2). But if there are no discounts, then the prices are as follows:

Contract without duration (O 2 o)

When you pay a one-time contract fee of 29.99 euros, you will receive a tariff in which calls and SMS cost 15 cents to any numbers.

Peculiarity: If the bill for this month exceeds 50 euros (this includes only calls within the country), then the airbag will work. This will mean that until the end of the month you will be able to talk within the country for free.

Contract with a minimum term (O 2 Blue 100 is the cheapest)

The one-time payment for concluding the contract in this case will be 29.99 euros, monthly payments will be 22.50 euros. You will receive an unlimited number of SMS to all numbers within the country, free calls on the O2 network, mobile Internet, which works quite quickly until the traffic exceeds 300 Megabytes. Then the speed will drop to 64 kbits per second. Calls to other networks cost 29 cents/minute, with 100 included free minutes. The minimum contract duration is 2 years (24 months).

Note. O 2 Blue is also available in a no-minimum contract option, but this does not include unlimited SMS.

Prepayment

A SIM card costs 14.99 euros, prices are the same as in the O2o tariff: 15 cents for all numbers.

With a one-time top-up of 15 euros, you get unlimited calls on the network, with a top-up of 20 - unlimited calls on the network and to landline numbers, and for 30 - unlimited SMS within the network.

Additional services

For us, foreigners, this service is especially relevant Global Friends, which allows you to call 5 numbers (2 mobile and 3 landline) for 10 cents per minute. The cost of the service is a one-time payment of 5 euros, all five numbers are paid free of charge.

Results for O 2

As we see, the most Better conditions O2 offers to contract workers. However, this is not surprising. If O2 had a monopoly, unlimited on-net calling would be worth paying €22.50 per month. But, unfortunately (or fortunately) this is not entirely true. On the other hand, the O2o tariff is non-binding and has the same prices both within the network and outside it, so it is suitable under any circumstances.

By the way, according to the CHIP newspaper, O 2 has the weakest coverage area, with which I readily agree: in my institute the walls are made of thick decorative concrete, and in some classrooms on the ground floor the connection completely stops, although people with Vodafone have such problems does not arise.

Contract packages

Vodafone has decided to divide its tariffs into two groups: for those who want to make calls and for those who want to use the Internet. Well, we will consider both options.

For phones

Average cost tariff - SuperFlat. It offers unlimited calls within the Vodafone network and to landline numbers. This tariff costs 24.95 euros per month for the first two years, after that - 29.95 euros.

Calls to other networks cost 29 cents/minute, SMS - 19 cents within Germany, 30 cents within the Vodafone network in other countries.

The tariff provides for a minimum contract period of 2 years.

For smartphones

SuperFlat Internet Special, which is offered as a middle option, is a slightly improved SuperFlat. Unlimited landline numbers were removed from the package, but 200 megabytes were added fast internet and then an unlimited amount of slower Internet.

SMS to all networks is free (reminds me of nothing?), and to the unlimited within the Vodafone network, unlimited to another network of your choice is added.

This “pleasure” costs 29.95 euros. The minimum contract period is also 2 years.

Prepayment

Vodafone called its prepaid offers CallYa. CallYa costs either 19.95 euros or 9.95 euros one-time.

In the first case, for the obligatory 9.99 euros per month, you will be connected to the Internet on SuperFlat Internet Spezial terms, calls to all networks will cost only 9 cents, and SMS is included in the 9.99 euros for Internet.

In the second case, you will not have to pay more per month than you can negotiate - the tariff does not provide for a mandatory monthly payment. Calls cost 5 cents within the network and 15 cents to others (per minute).

SMS to all networks will cost 19 cents per minute.

Prices abroad

To give Vodafone its due, SMS is cheaper than any other network. One message to any corner of the world will cost you 30 cents. For amateurs, it is possible to send MMS (79 cents).

Prices for calls to Europe are greatly inflated: from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, a call will cost you 98 cents per minute; Calls at other times are slightly cheaper: “only” 69 cents.

Special tariff offers are available only for Turkey.

Total for Vodafone

Perhaps there is nowhere more expensive: in this parameter, only T-Mobile can compete with Vodafone. In principle, the red-and-white operator, from whom MTS steals and takes inspiration, has not done anything new and offers O2 tariffs, only less profitable and a little more expensive.

In general, if your name is not Mohammed Abdul, and your family and seven children are not waiting for you somewhere on the shores of Turkey, then Vodafone is unlikely to be able to give you something unusual. Although, to be fair, Vodafone has the largest coverage area and one of the largest selection of smartphones with a simlock.

German state provider and that says it all. At the time of writing, I knew nothing about it, but I was still skeptical. Let's see if my skepticism was justified...

Contract rates

Their choice is extremely huge, so I would focus on those that are similar to O2 or Vodafone tariffs. Let's take O2 as a standard, since its description is the most reliable.

SuperFlat Internet Spezial from Vodafone found itself in a promotional offer 4-fach Flat from T-Mobile. For the promotional price of 29.95 euros, the client receives free SMS to all networks (and for some reason to landline numbers), unlimited calls within the network and one more network to choose from (:). On other networks, a minute will cost 29 cents. Also provided unlimited Internet, but, unlike the above operators, the speed does not drop after a certain number of megabytes.

There are many other tariffs, and they are different, but they are all variations on the 4-fach Flat. Cheaper prices than in O2 (under the same conditions) are not found here.

Prepayment

Thank goodness T-Mobile didn't offer a million options on its prepaid plan selection page. There are only two of them: Xtra Card And Xtra Nonstop.

The first tariff also does not require any monthly payments (apparently, the idea of monthly payments in prepaid tariffs is a Vodafone feature). But this plan is not without oddities: regardless of how much you talk within the network and with landline numbers, the conversation costs 29 cents. For 29 cents a day you will get 100 free SMS within the network and to landline numbers. For 99 cents a day you get unlimited internet.

The second tariff does not require monthly payments; calls and SMS within the network cost 5 cents each; calls to other networks - 15 cents, and SMS - 19. Conditions of receipt mobile internet the same as in the tariff above.

Prices abroad

If necessary, for a price of 4.95 euros/month (for comparison - 5 euros one-time at O2), you will activate a service that will allow you to call the rest of Europe for 48 cents to mobile numbers and 19 cents to landline numbers.

Results for T-Mobile

The most expensive operator. I don’t even know what’s good about it. Unless in all cities you will find telephone booths with their logo, next to which (subject to the purchased package) you can use wireless Internet.

By quality of communication T-Mobile A little inferior to Vodafone.

BASE (e-plus)

Update: The e-plus network, along with its capacities, was purchased by O2 (Telefonica) in 2014 and ceased to exist as a separate company. The information below is history.

The cheapest network in existence. The main feature is the free choice of the necessary “flat” ( unlimited services). Here are some of them: unlimited calls within the network - 10 euros, 15 euros - a gigabyte of fast mobile Internet, 50 euros - unlimited free calls to all networks.

It turns out that BASE does not have its own tariffs. Instead, they leave it to the user to collect the most profitable one. Such a designer.

Prepayment

BASE offers only one tariff: for 5 euros per month (yep, not only Vodafone requires monthly payment in prepaid tariffs) you will receive full unlimited within the BASE and e-plus+ network. SMS to all and calls to all remaining networks cost 19 cents.

Prices abroad

The prices for calls abroad, however, cannot be compared with the prices of Global Friends from O2. A minute of conversation with any European country costs 39 cents per minute, not counting 75 cents for connection. Countries that are neither in Europe nor in those where there are special offers from BASE “cost” 1.79 euros per minute.

SMS to all countries costs 39 cents.

BASE results

This network is almost close to discount stores mobile operators(which will be discussed next time). The cost of the services is captivating, but, as happens with everything cheap, this network is not particularly in demand. In addition, if BASE, then only a contract - their offer of prepayment will probably not tempt anyone.

Conclusion

Of course, when it comes to choosing something, be it a T-shirt, a bicycle or a mobile operator, you cannot be clear-cut. However, I would give some recommendations to those who are hesitant about making a choice.

The cheapest prices are with O2 and BASE, but when choosing between these two, O2 has a larger coverage area and A little better quality communications (based on the opinion of the CHIP newspaper. I used both - no difference - author's note).

When choosing between O2 tariffs, you must clearly understand whether you need the Internet. If needed, then right choice- O2 Blue 100. If not, take a look at prepaid offers or O2o, since, looking at all tariffs in the cellular market, O2 has the most interesting offers. Personally, I am currently using O2o, but will be switching to Blue 100, so I can safely recommend it. The average bill, subject to calls for several minutes a day, is 30 euros.

Question: whose cellular services do you use in Germany?
