The best HP tablets. Best HP Tablets SUV Convertible Tablets

All familiar things undergo changes one day. How could a peasant recognize a microwave or multicooker as a “continuation” of a traditional oven? And the refrigerator does not at all resemble the “cold” underground floor in a Russian hut. It’s the same story with a laptop: the 2-in-1 form factor still causes some confusion. Let's try to understand, using the example of the HP Elite x2 1012 G1 tablet computer, how revolutionary this solution is.

HP Elite x2 1012 G1 review: laptop or tablet?

Let's make a reservation right away: the HP Elite x2 1012 G1 is a commercial device designed to solve business problems. The manufacturer does not position it as a laptop or tablet for entertainment, which means choosing it for watching movies in the country or as a photo or video camera is not very rational.

The focus is completely different functional features and advantages: like the rest of the HP Elite family, the x2 is, first and foremost, a durable and reliable device for work. Compliance with the requirements of the American defense standard MIL-STD5 allows this PC to be used by employees of enterprises from a wide variety of industries: dust or high humidity in the premises is not a problem for them, as is shaking during flights or working on a train. Additional reliability is provided through the use of Corning safety glass Gorilla Glass 4 and the use of two types of aluminum alloys that maintain an optimal balance of strength and lightness. In general, it is an ideal assistant for a mobile specialist or businessman on a business trip.

To ensure that the tablet meets all the necessary requirements, it uses a unique combination of technologies: HP Sure Start - a security system that runs at the BIOS level, the HP Touchpoint Manager administration service, management technologies built into the Intel Core M vPro processor, as well as mechanisms that ensure ease of operation. repair and technical work without delivery to a service center.

The Elite x2 also features security features that are integrated directly into the system rather than added as an add-on. The optional Intel M vPro processor allows system administrators to power and remotely manage the Elite x2 over wired and wireless networks, as well as other unique hardware enhancements.

However, the HP Elite x2 1012 G1 may also be of interest to many home users.

HP Elite x2 1012 G1 is a stylish tablet, with an all-metal body, a plastic antenna insert on the back, which also includes a camera module with flash. There, on the back, there is a fingerprint sensor.

The front dimensions of the device are 300 x 213.5 mm. Thickness - 8.05 mm. With the included HP Travel Keyboard attached, the dimensions are 300 x 213.5 x 13.45 mm. The weight of the two-piece combination is 1205 g, and the tablet itself weighs 820 grams.

The black frames around the edges are unusually wide - about two centimeters. In the middle of the top frame are the front camera and light sensor.

At the top end, behind perforated holes in the aluminum casing, there are Bang & Olufsen speakers. There, on a short distance from each other, you can find two microphones.

On the left side there is an on/off button, below there is a volume rocker with “+” and “-” icons, a tray for SIM cards, a recess for attaching a loop that holds the pen and a stand mount.

At the bottom end there is a recess with a magnetic connector and guides for attaching and connecting the keyboard. The keyboard attaches with a characteristic click. And it holds up very tightly. In principle, it holds the tablet itself suspended, but you should not repeat this experiment often. In the horizontal plane the keyboard holds very tightly, but if you move it to the side, as if tearing it, it comes off with noticeably less force. Left side The cover is bent and magnetized to the bottom frame, which makes it even more securely attached to the tablet in a laptop position, and also provides a very convenient tilt angle. Obviously, if you have work space and depending on your preferences, the keyboard can be placed horizontally on the table surface.

The keyboard itself is the lid of the tablet, naturally, very hard. The upper part is made of aluminum, back side covered with gray cloth. The keyboard is island-type, the key size is standard, the travel is comfortable, just like on the company’s top laptops. There is a keyboard backlight - very uniform and comfortable, it is activated automatically. The keyboard interacts with the tablet via a connector, only with a “physical” connection.

If the keyboard is wrapped behind the back of the device, it stops responding to keystrokes. The trackpad is located under the key block; it is quite wide, at the level of modern models, but its width is more modest, dimensions are 91 x 51 mm. Multi-gestures are supported. Keyboard dimensions - 300 x 219.3 x 6.1 mm.

On the right side there is a jack for a 3.5 mm stereo headset, standard USB Type A (3.0), tray MicroSD cards and USB Type-C, which is used for charging or other peripherals with this interface. In particular, this could be a monitor (Thunderbolt technology supported, resolution up to 4K), a docking station or drives. Below is a color diode to display events and device status. When charging, it glows orange and then white.

The most interesting thing is, of course, the issue of placing the device on the surface. To do this, the tablet is equipped with a folding bracket on fairly tight hinges, which provide tilt angles in a wide range. However, each such manipulation should be carried out with some caution and make sure that the tablet is placed firmly. There are recesses on the side ends for comfortable gripping of the stand. On a table, a tablet with a keyboard attached is practically no different from a regular laptop, the only thing is that the screen with the stand folded down will require a little more space.

The ends of the staple are very sharp and cut heavily into the skin, which does not mean comfortable placement on the knees. With the external keyboard folded down, the design becomes completely unstable. After all, if in a usual laptop the bulk is collected in the keyboard, lower block, here it’s the other way around. If it is impossible to place the device on a surface, you can use on-screen input methods, a stylus or a mouse.

Tablet mode is practically useless. If you are a professional, you are unlikely to need a “tiled” interface. The only thing real application- casual games that are easier to use and purchase in this mode.

In “normal” Windows mode, work is very comfortable. If you do not have a mouse, long pressing on an object will open a context menu (similar to right button mice). If objects or fonts are too small, you can select the appropriate scaling mode. And to get into small icons and interface elements, you can use a mouse or stylus. By the way, it’s a very unusual experience to hold a tablet in one hand and move the mouse across the table surface with the other.

There are several ways to enter information on-screen. They are called up from the left menu, including handwriting input, which works quite quickly and correctly. The keyboard is large, but this can cause minor inconvenience. It covers almost half the screen. It is especially inconvenient to work in this mode with tables and text editors. In addition, there is no way to control the cursor on the on-screen keyboard. For example, iOS has a simply ingenious solution where when you press with two fingers, the keyboard area turns into a trackpad. And in our case, the user needs to “minimize” the keyboard, point and hit the desired place with the cursor, and call the input utility again.

So for serious work physical keyboard is a necessity. In addition, it also acts as a tablet screen protector. But no one bothers you to buy any other keyboard, be it Bluetooth or even USB.

The same applies to the mouse - it is more convenient to work with it in Windows. It is better to take a wireless one, or rather even Bluetooth, given the number of available ports. In particular, we used the HP Z5000 Bluetooth mouse provided to us and were pleased with the results. It is very light, convenient, and the accuracy and speed of operation did not cause any complaints. Pairing with the tablet goes without any problems.

Wacom's HP Active Pen is also included. Weighs only 17.5 grams. Dimensions -147.29 x 9.5 mm. 2048 degrees of pressure are recognized, as well as tilt angles. It is very comfortable to operate it, especially in applications with a small interface. At the same time, it is not even necessary to physically touch the screen; the cursor moves when you bring the tip of the stylus to it at a distance of several millimeters. By the way, this can lead to unexpected results, especially when drawing. The pen is equipped with several keys, in particular for launching applications, erasing and other customizable options.

The kit includes a rare AAAA battery, additional tips, a loop for attaching to the tablet body and a touching rope to tie the pen to a special hole at the end of the computer.

After pressing the power button, approximately 5 to 7 seconds pass before the device shows any signs of life. For those who work with Android or iOS tablets, this may seem unusually long.

The device’s display features the usual 3:2 aspect ratio for “working”, non-multimedia tablets. Its diagonal is 12 inches (30.48 cm), which is probably the most optimal compromise for a two-in-one solution. On the one hand, when used as a laptop, such a diagonal may seem small, but when used as a tablet, taking into account the weight and dimensions and expectations, you understand that an increase in size would lead to a loss of mobility.

The LED-backlit screen with Direct Bonding technology provides good brightness and contrast, as well as decent viewing angles. The top of the screen is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 4, which is resistant to minor physical damage. An oleophobic coating is also applied - the glass does not stain. The screen is glossy, the ability to change the angle to avoid reflections and glare is a huge plus. On sunlight It is very difficult to work even with the maximum brightness level.

The display resolution is 1920x1080 (Full-HD), which is not bad for a laptop, but when used as a tablet, especially for sophisticated users, the screen may seem grainy. After all, even in modern smartphones, with a much smaller diagonal, they “install” 4K screens.

Intel Core m7-6Y75 processor with Intel HD Graphics 515 (clock frequency 1.2 GHz, up to 3.1 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology, 4 MB cache, 2 cores).

The RAM capacity is 8 GB (LPDDR3-1866 module is installed), which, in our opinion, is optimal for a modern work computer.

The storage used is 256 GB M.2 PCIe NVMe 3. The capacity can be expanded using a MicroSD card. The manufacturer's specifications indicate a capacity limit of up to 200 GB. But for now we still need to look for such a card, and the cost such a decision will be very high. If necessary, you can connect flash drives and external hard wheels, both standard and with new ones USB interface Type-C.

LTE Mobile Broadband Module - HP lt4120 Qualcomm Snapdragon X5.

The HP Elite x2 1012 G1 has two cameras. Front, 2 MP, for video calls and the main photo module, on the back - 5 MP, equipped with a flash. Video recording in Full HD (30 fps) is supported. Obviously, shooting with such a bulky device with such a resolution is not the best interesting idea. But to support video communication, the specified parameters are sufficient with reserve.

Considering quite compact dimensions devices, the biggest concern was the issue of autonomy. It is obvious that even energy-efficient technologies cannot cope with the appetites of modern Windows computers. And partly our fears were confirmed. In fairly intensive work mode with the screen on, the tablet lasted less than 4 hours. In video playback mode (50% volume, 50% backlight in a darkened room) - 4 hours 56 minutes.

The power supply weighs only 200 grams.

The short “power” part of the wire is 45 cm, the long one with the USB Type-C connector is 1.8 m.

The hero of today's review goes back to the “transformer” (a hybrid ultrabook with a plug-in keyboard) announced by HP after CES 2015 - Elite X2 1011 G1. It was made in the usual format at that time: a tablet and a keyboard base with a built-in battery and a movable hinge for changing the angle of the screen. Back in 2012, other manufacturers offered something similar, but with operating system Android on board. Later, other manufacturers used this design. The main differences between the device and HP are the fingerprint scanner and the Wacom stylus, hidden in the body of the model.

The new version, while retaining many of its proprietary features, in its form factor has become much closer to Microsoft's Surface Pro line of products and is its direct competitor. The company offers enough a large number of various configurations of the Elite X2 1012 G1 for “any wallet”. We got our hands on one of the most expensive versions.

Packaging and delivery

The HP Elite X2 1012 G1 convertible laptop is packaged in a simple cardboard box. In it the user will find:

  • the device itself,
  • keyboard block,
  • external power supply,
  • power cable,
  • various documentation,
  • DVD with driver and pre-installed application recovery utility,
  • Wacom pen and a set of accessories for it (a spare battery, a metal puller, three spare nibs, a rope for attaching to the tablet part, two sticker loops for holding the pen on the keyboard base).

Unfortunately, the manufacturer did not include an adapter from USB Type-C to the more familiar USB format, but fortunately the Elite X2 still has one full-size USB.

You can tell by the sticker on the box serial number, product number (also known as modification SKU number), mac address and country of production - China.

Appearance

The basis of the HP Elite X2 1012 G1 is a classic tablet in an aluminum case with glass on the front surface that protects the screen, and a special retractable stand that allows you to install the device at a certain angle.

The keyboard base is an accessory and is not included in the delivery package for all modifications. In addition, HP offers to purchase an improved version of the keyboard, with built-in NFC module and a slot for smart cards. It is slightly thicker than the base version.

Thanks to a special magnetic mount, the keyboard can be installed either parallel to the working surface or at a slight angle for more comfortable typing. The standard tilt angle of the tablet relative to the horizon is 125-130 degrees. If you apply a little more effort to the stand, then the angle can be adjusted to 150-160 degrees.

The aluminum body is not easily soiled and is highly resistant to minor scratches. The device looks strict and gives the impression of a monolithic, rigid structure. And indeed, the build quality here is perfect, and the materials used are the best you can imagine. Nothing bends, crunches or creaks. The tablet part weighs only 820 grams with a thickness of 8 mm - quite a bit for such a device with a 12.5-inch screen. The keyboard included in our modification adds 385 grams and 5.4 mm to the weight and thickness, respectively. The result is an ultrabook averaged in both parameters.

In the center of the back cover is the HP logo with a mirror surface. The upper area is covered with tempered glass with black lamination, which favorably emphasizes the status of the device. A fingerprint scanner is located nearby.

The device body has a sufficient set of ports for connection: one USB 3.1 Type-C with Thunderbolt support (charging is done through it), the usual USB 3.0 Type-A, and a combined 3.5 mm jack for connecting headphones/acoustics or a microphone.

You can also see a slot for microSD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards with a capacity of up to 200 GB, a slot for microSIM, a power key with a built-in LED, a volume rocker, a contact group for connecting a keyboard unit and a hole for attaching a rope holding the stylus. To make it easier to open the stand on both sides of the device, the manufacturer made special bevels on the body.

Two speakers from Bang & Olufsen are located on either side of the top edge of the tablet. But unlike the HP Folio G1 ultrabook, the Elite X2 has nothing to brag about. The maximum volume is average, low frequencies are absent as a class, high frequencies are severely lacking. The only good thing is that there is no wheezing at any volume. In general, even by tablet standards, the speaker system of the review hero is, to put it mildly, not very good.

Input Devices

For the HP Elite X2 1012 G1 convertible, the main input method is the on-screen keyboard. But since the device is far from the most compact and light, and the fairly powerful hardware allows you to perform a wide range of tasks, the manufacturer took care of the possibility of connecting a keyboard unit with a touch panel.

The keyboard buttons are black, their surface is matte, all letters and symbols are white. There is a white backlight of the keys with three operating modes (low brightness, high brightness, off). The tablet itself has a light sensor, thanks to which the brightness of the backlight of not only the screen, but also the keyboard is automatically adjusted.

The distance between the buttons is about 2.7 mm, their thickness is 1.6-1.7 mm, the working stroke is 1.5 mm, which allows you to work quite comfortably at the keyboard for a long time. The size of the main keys is 15 × 15 mm, the layout is quite normal, so it won’t take long to get used to. The only thing that may confuse some is the reduced size of the up and down arrows, but this is par for the course for many HP laptops. The upper block of control keys works by default when you press the Fn modifier (changing brightness, volume, etc.).

The clicks are soft, clear, with an average return force. The sound is not loud, muffled. Long typing does not cause discomfort.

The touchpad is not very large - 95 × 55 mm, it is framed by a metal edge with rounded corners. The working surface is glass, with two hidden buttons that have minimal but clear movement. The left “click” works on almost the entire surface, and the right one only in the lower right corner. The touch panel is manufactured by ALPS and supports Glidepoint technology. In terms of the adequacy of gesture recognition and even two-finger scrolling, this is clearly not the best possible solution, but for HP devices this seems to be the standard.

The hero of the review uses a regular 2-megapixel module of medium quality as a webcam, and on either side of it, on the top edge, there are two digital microphones. On back cover, at the top, there is a more advanced 5-megapixel module with LED flash. The maximum resolution of both cameras is Full HD (1920 × 1080 pixels).

The fingerprint module (fingerprint scanner) copes with its duties, but its operating speed is certainly not as high as in modern smartphones, and the recognition accuracy leaves much to be desired. In addition, you need to apply your finger and move it slowly, after which Windows system may think a little more (not always) before allowing you to start working.

As for the HP Active Pen digital stylus with application launch function, it inherited all modern stylus technologies from Wacom, on the basis of which it was built. The stylus registers up to 2048 pressure levels and tilt level, and is equipped with three buttons that can be assigned almost any action for a wide variety of applications. This accessory can be used both for everyday work and for drawing or creating handwritten notes. In addition, it can be used at a short distance (about 1-2 mm) from the screen as a mouse. In general, his work will no doubt be appreciated by many users.

HP Elite X2 1012 G1 was introduced at the end of November 2015, but went on sale in Russia only at the end of March 2016. It is the business version of the mass-market HP Specter X2 and a reimagining of the Elite X2 1011 G1. The simplest modification is equipped with a Core m3 family processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 128 GB SSD drive. In this case, the keyboard unit will have to be purchased separately. Further, progressively, you can purchase versions with Core m5/m7, 8 GB RAM, SSD with a capacity of 256-512 GB, and an additional 3G/LTE module. All older versions come exclusively with the travel version of the keyboard (without NFC and a smart card reader). Prices start from 66 thousand rubles and end at 170-180 thousand. The direct competitors of the review hero are the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and the just released Acer Switch 12 Alpha, Lenovo Miix 510 and ASUS Transformer 3 Pro.

HP Elite X2 1012 G1-gallery 1

The sample we received for testing is based on a 6th generation Intel Core m7 6Y75 processor with a built-in Intel HD Graphics 515 video adapter and a dual-channel LPDDR3-1866/DDR3L-1600 memory controller. This SoC (system-on-chip) is manufactured according to the 14-nm process technology using FinFET transistors. This is the most powerful solution in terms of performance among modern Core M, however, it will be difficult to feel the real difference between some m3 and m7 without special tests and measurements.

The nominal CPU frequency is only 1.2 GHz. Hyper-Threading and TurboBoost are supported, accelerating the processor to 3.1 GHz when loaded on one core and up to 2.6 GHz when loaded on two cores. But let us immediately note that in the first case, these are the maximum frequencies available for literally a few seconds (in the ideal case, for several tens of seconds). Even when performing real tasks, the system quickly reduces frequencies to the level of 2400-2600 MHz, and under very high loads they drop by more than half. This is what passive cooling can do in a fairly thin case. On the other hand, for a Windows tablet it is better than running on high speed small fan, like in Microsoft Surface.

Integrated graphics Intel core HD Graphics 515 with GPU frequencies in the range of 300-1000 MHz is positioned by Intel as low-end graphics. In essence, this is an analogue of the HD Graphics 520, but only for Core M processors. The same 24 execution units (GT2) and the lack of its own dedicated memory greatly affect the results of the device. And the need to work in cramped conditions, without active cooling, quickly drives the GPU into a “flaming cage” - frequencies are reduced and the results are significantly lower than those of the HD 520 in processors of the Core i family, but with a TDP of 15 W. This is typical not only for hybrid devices, but even for some very thin ultrabooks in full-size cases.

HP Elite X2 1012 G1-gallery 2

The system logic set in the laptop is the top-end Intel Sunrise Point LP solution. The amount of RAM standard DDR3-11866 (933 MHz) in our case is 8 GB, it operates in dual-channel mode. There is no option to increase the amount of RAM.

All versions of the Elite X2 1012 G1 are equipped with a semi-matte IPS display from LG Display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 and support touch input(up to 10 simultaneous clicks). Working resolution non-standard and is 1920 × 1280 pixels. The 3:2 aspect ratio allows you to display more useful information on the screen, but it will not be the most convenient for watching movies - the black frames will be larger than on displays with a standard 16:9 ratio.

The data storage subsystem is based on the familiar 256 GB Samsung MZNLN256HCHP-000H1 (PM871) SSD drive, made in M.2 2280 format and connected via the SATA3 interface.

Job wireless connections Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.2 LE in the hero of the review are provided by the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 controller, and the HP LT4120 chip (Snapdragon X5 LTE, microSIM slot) is responsible for 3G/LTE. The Conexant Cx20724 HDA codec is responsible for the sound.

Impressive practicality at a reasonable price.

Verdict: Despite being better suited for business than the Surface Pro, the HP Elite 1012 x2 G1 also suffers from poor timing battery life.

  • Pros: Great keyboard | Responsive trackpad | Clean screen;
  • Minuses: So-so hinge | Battery life | Clumsy stylus;

Introduction

The king in the tablet market, thanks to its excellent keyboard case. On the market of devices with keyboards, the most similar to a real laptop. This is exactly how we position the HP Elite 1012 x2 G1. Vague, but that's how it happened.

We have HP. Thanks to its excellent keyboard case, its HP Elite 1012 x2 G1 can take the lead among 2-in-1 tablets. However, it will not get the golden crown due to the cost of hardware. With a price tag of 90,000 rubles, you will have to hit the jackpot to buy a hybrid.

Elite x2 naturally comes into competitive comparison with and, of course, . Like its competitors, the Elite x2 is suitable for the boardroom and home coffee table. Its keyboard is backlit (with numeric keypad), you get a great trackpad, a Wacom stylus and Thunderbolt with USB Type-C support, along with built-in enterprise security features that will turn any workspace user's head. HP Elite 1012 x2 G1 review below.

DesignHP Elite 1012 x2 G1

Both business users and aesthetes will appreciate the Elite x2.

On the outside we get two tones: Black, the Gorilla Glass panel (glass) where the front camera is located is complemented by a silver aluminum body. Gorilla Glass not only protects the camera from drops, but also from touching the lens with your fingers.

A fingerprint scanner is rarely an option on tablets, but HP has found a place to put one on the back of the tablet. The scanner is tactile enough that you can find it by touch, and finely integrated enough that it doesn't detract from the beautiful appearance Elite x2.

Like the top bezel, the Elite X2's 12-inch screen is framed by Gorilla Glass, and it's a large enough bezel that might be unsightly on a laptop, but provides hand resting area on a tablet so you can hold the device.

The screen is also easy enough to remove if you ever need an update. Unscrew the kickstand (we'll discuss that later), place the suction cup on the screen, pull out, and the insides of the HP Elite 1012 x2 G1 are right in front of you.

This ensures that the tablet will not fail during maintenance, and enterprise users will be able to recycle the drives after the end of the project without having to sacrifice the entire device.

Overall, the Elite 1012 x2 feels sturdy—but not heavy. In fact, at just over 800g, the x2 is only slightly heavier than the XPS 12 (790g) and Surface Pro 4 (784g).

The durability of the tablet, according to HP, is an important goal of the design team. HP says it put the Elite x2 through a 12-hour stress test that included various drops, shocks and temperature changes. Compared to these tests, riding in a hot car trunk or an inattentive baggage attendant should be a breeze for the tablet.

Fairness and balance

As I mentioned, the HP Elite 1012 x2 G1 rests on an aluminum kickstand to keep it upright. A groove on the side of the tablet allows easy access to the kickstand, which, after a gentle push, provides a resting position at the back of the tablet. The kickstand offers many different locking points, allowing you to mount the screen at almost any angle.

Luckily, the running board is sticky. Once the angle is adjusted, the footrest, and therefore the tablet, will remain in place. Elite x2 is not afraid of a slippery table in a conference room.

He's also not afraid of more challenging tasks, which may come as a surprise to some. Typically, 2-in-1 tablets are like gymnasts, strong on the floor exercise but weak on the goat routine. And that's not entirely true with the HP Elite 1012. Yes, it prefers a hard desk surface, but it balances well enough on uneven surfaces.

The magnetic keyboard connection is certainly not the most secure, but it is strong enough to keep the device together when you move it across a desk or even upside down (tablet).

The second set of magnets near the keyboard connects the keyboard cover to the bottom panel of the tablet. And this connection remains the weak link; it often breaks when the device is moved.

So be prepared to constantly adjust the lid after transferring the Elite x2. Also be prepared to make constant adjustments to the footrest while working on your knees.

It's a little annoying, but it prevents the tablet from tipping forward onto the keyboard. This doesn't happen often, but if you make a big shift, x2 can hit the keyboard face-first. Fortunately for the health of the tablet, and your wallet, it's more likely to fall forward than to dive into the floor at your feet.

Another tip: wear pants. The HP Elite 1012 x2 G1's metal footrest isn't too harsh, but it's thin and bare-legged discomfort is guaranteed after a long session.

Keyboard, touchpad and stylus...

There's no shortage of input options with the Elite x2. The keyboard, the touchpad, the Wacom stylus, the touchscreen - even your voice, if you count Cortana search - every input method is available on this business tablet, and they all work just fine.

Basic input methods, keyboard and trackpad are integrated into excellent Type Cover x2. There is no flimsy plastic, the keyboard case is made of rigid aluminum in a solid layout. This solution provides a durable, and most importantly, comfortable base for your hands.

The keyboard backlight is easy to cover with your hands, but not too difficult to navigate. The island-style keys are large enough (letter keys in particular) and well spaced for easy finger identification. On many keyboards, where space is limited, the size of the outer keys (Caps Lock, Enter, etc.) is sacrificed for the well-being of the central part, but not here.

The quality of the set is as comfortable as possible, very similar to a laptop. This is really important considering that the thickness of the keyboard is measured in millimeters. All keys boast excellent travel and there are no soft, sagging buttons.

Enterprise users will love the inclusion of a numeric keypad. This is not a discrete set of buttons, but alternative function keys that are activated by pressing Num. This is an excellent compromise when space is limited, I would like to see it more often.

And while we're focusing on the great keyboard, there's one downside: the trackpad suffers. He is hungry for space and wants to be bigger.

The trackpad is, of course, large, but this is not enough. Its squat nature is especially noticeable during vertical scrolling. Of course, cranking up the sensitivity helps solve this problem, but I would have liked to have had a little extra room to work with.

On the plus side, the trackpad is very responsive and has a very good “click” and spring to it. Overall, typing is a pleasure to use with the HP Keyboard Case. Business users won't have any trouble getting through the day with the HP Elite 1012 x2 G1 Tablet we reviewed.

Keyboard aside, the Elite x2's other notable input tool is the Wacom stylus, which HP calls the Active Pen. HP believes this is an important inclusion not only for ordinary users, but also for corporate users who often need to sign documents on a tablet, as well as take quick notes in meetings.

The Active Pen, based on my occasional use, works great. The stylus is perfectly calibrated right out of the box. It feels natural to use, as if you were writing with a pen. You can also access OneNote with ease: just press the eraser button on the stylus to open the app.

HP's mounting method for the Active Pen, however, struck me as wobbly. You can store it in loops or, an interesting solution, on a thread. Since the hinge attachment will not last longer than six months if transported in a backpack, the second option seems more attractive.

FullIs HD enough?

The Elite x2's FHD display (1920 x 1280) isn't the limit of screen technology, but there's plenty of visual power when you look at this 12-inch screen. In a nutshell, the display has no limitations.

Even sharp viewing angles offer a clear image, although there is a limitation, of course, due to the glossy finish. But a glossy panel is a must for a device that needs to attract the attention of a conference room.

The touchscreen offers remarkable responsiveness—even for zombie fingers like mine. Scrolling, manipulating apps, clicking links - the Elite 1012 x2 G1 and Windows 10 respond without delay.

However, some users could expect more pixels for 90,000 rubles. Microsoft Surface Pro 4 offers a resolution of 2736 x 1824 pixels for 75,000 rubles, and the Dell XPS 12, costing 85,000 rubles, offers a UHD panel with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. And that doesn't mean these tablets skimp on other hardware: each offers 256GB of storage, like the Elite x2.

Specifications

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and XPS 12 offer the same amount of RAM and internal storage as the Elite x2: 8GB and 256GB, respectively. But all three devices are slightly different.

The Dell XPS 12 and Elite x2 G1 prioritize energy conservation—they're based on Core M chips—while the Surface Pro 4 comes with a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor, offering much more power.

When it comes to available ports, however, the XPS 12 and Elite x2 are much more impressive machines than the Surface Pro 4. First up is a port that remains the favorite of all business users: USB Type-C with Thunderbolt. The XPS 12 doesn't stop there and offers two USB Type-C ports.

In comparison, the Elite x2 only offers one USB port Type-C. The second port is a traditional USB 3.0 - a smart solution, in our opinion, in comparison with the second USB Type-C, because we are surrounded by many outdated peripheral devices.

Performance

Few hybrids are able to offer a full-fledged (non-mobile) gaming experience, Elite x2 is no exception. However, the HP tablet is the star of home and business tasks. This is a great device when you need to multitask.

Benchmarks

Here's how the HP Elite x2 1012 G1 performed on benchmark tests:

Given its hardware, we're not surprised by the Elite x2's lack of graphics power. And in this area, competitors are outperforming the HP hybrid. The Surface Pro 4 scores, on average, 60% better in 3DMark tests, and the XPS 12 is 10% more powerful despite having similar hardware.

Interestingly, the Elite x2 holds up well in the PCMark 8 Home Test. In fact, the hybrid scored slightly higher (2,447) than the SP4 (2,406) and XPS 12 (2,247). It's interesting that Elite x2 is very fast in everyday use, even with multiple apps open and music streaming in the background.

Where the Elite x2 disappoints, however, is in the battery life tests. Despite its Core M configuration, the tablet lasts a paltry 3 hours and 53 minutes on the PCMark 8 Battery tests, and just over five hours on the video playback test (full-screen video playback looped at 50% brightness and 50% volume).

The Dell XPS 12 doesn't do much better. The tablet lasted only 3 hours and 35 minutes in PCMark 8 Battery testing. In the continuous video playback test, it lasted about 5 hours. Microsoft Surface Pro 4 with powerful processors The Core i5 performs predictably worse, but not by much: 3 hours and 15 minutes on the PCMark 8 test and 5 hours and 15 minutes on the video test.

Verdict

The HP Elite 1012 x2 G1 may not bridge the gap between a production laptop and a 2-in-1 hybrid tablet, but its excellent array of ports and USB Type C make it a good choice for the boardroom. All it takes to achieve elite status is improved battery life and increased hinge strength.

We liked: An easy-to-use keyboard with a sleek trackpad and a comfortable stylus are the highlights of this device, a business-focused 2-in-1 tablet, along with a highly adjustable stand and balanced positions. The Elite x2 tablet/laptop hybrid is one of the most convenient devices to use in laptop mode.

We didn't like: For device on Core based M, battery life is too short. The tablet's target market is business travelers who will want to travel with a feature-rich hybrid. The Elite x2's quick battery drain would have been understandable if the hybrid had been given more power or a higher screen resolution, but neither of those things seem possible.

Final verdict

The HP Elite 1012 x2 G1 Tablet achieves the dream of 2 in 1: combining the convenience of a tablet and a laptop. The tablet in the form of a high-quality laptop will certainly appeal to businesses. Unfortunately, the battery will not pass the selection process.

You can drop the 2 in 1 convertible device HP Elite x2 on the floor, and most likely it will not break. The durable case will withstand a blow well, and if you are very unlucky, its parts are repairable.

HP has developed its 12-inch convertible tablet high class like a gadget with increased durability. It is supposed to compete with Microsoft Surface Pro 4. So features such as impact resistance will not hinder it.

Unlike the line Surface from Microsoft, which arose after several generations of tablets, Elite x2 evolved from HP's line of laptops as well as its more consumer-oriented predecessor, the Specter x2 convertible tablet released last year. So, having bought Elite x2, You'll likely be pleased to get a stable keyboard, built-in Windows Hello facial recognition capabilities, a fingerprint sensor, and an excellent trackpad.

Just be careful when using it on your lap: the magnets hold the tablet in place less easily than it appears. So the shockproof feature can be tried out sooner than desired.

A safe fall implies a height of no more than a meter. Anything higher will most likely cause irreparable damage to the gadget.

SUV among convertible tablets

Although the series Surface from Microsoft often considered a premium, tablet option with Core processor m3 for Surface Pro 4 costs just $899, with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. Plus separately $130 for the keyboard cover. A HP she immediately makes it clear that her device costs much more: Elite x2 in the initial configuration it will cost you $1399. At the same time, it will have a Corem5-6Y54 processor with clock frequency at 1.1 GHz. Although there are options on both the M3 and M7, and they all have a fanless design.

Nevertheless x2 Elite beats the competition in that it offers low-power DDR3-1866 RAM in configurations up to 8 GB plus solid state drive up to 512 GB. In addition, it supports Intel technology Vpro, giving IT administrators access to a set of technologies and manageability that justify the high price of an enterprise gadget. The keyboard is also included in the price of the tablet.

The tablet itself Elite x2 measures 11.8 x 8.4 x 0.3 inches, and with a keyboard it will be 0.6 inches thick. The entire device weighs 2.64 pounds, which is slightly more than Surface Pro 4(2.4 lbs) and Lenovo X1(2.28 lbs). The charger adds another 0.56 pounds, and the design pulls a total of 3.2 pounds, or one and a half kilograms.

Out of the box and ready to go

Out of the box, the Elite x2 immediately convinces you that time is money and you need to work right away. This business approach appeals to efficient people who value a simple, user-friendly interface where everything is enabled by default.

The rich keyboard is covered in LEDs and several key functions, creating a visual break from the minimalist Specter x2. Unlike Surface Pro 4 or Lenovo ThinkPad X1, HP covered top part The keyboard is made of aluminum, although underneath there is a familiar quasi-fabric. Add to this a durable metal stand, and general impression is such that the tablet will work forever.

One of the features that distinguishes the convertible tablet is the kickstand. The metal footrest on the hinge is adjustable as you like, but only up to 40 degrees. However, this is enough to place the tablet on a table or use it on your lap.

The keyboard has three good features: A series of small rubber bumpers serve to protect the screen, protecting it when folded. The touchpad is excellent and has excellent responsive buttons, and HP has also added numeric keypad for data entry. You need to enable the Numlock key for it to work.

The only pity is that the magnets holding the keyboard are not strong enough. And with sudden movements, it may happen that the tablet flies off the keyboard and tests your reaction. Two magnetic points for contact are clearly not enough. Luckily the screen is covered protective glass Gorilla Glass 4. This helps protect the 12-inch FHD LED-lit screen with a resolution of 1920x1280 pixels. It's a slightly smaller screen than the 2736x1824 pixels of Surface Pro 4 or 2160x1440 pixels for a 12-inch Lenovo X1 And Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro S, but it also looks good.

Setting up and using fingerprint recognition mimics Face ID in Hello. Select your finger, swipe it over the reader a few times to set a good reference image, and you're done.

The other feature that sets the convertible tablet apart from modern laptops is, of course, the touch pen, aka stylus, which the Elite x2 also includes. But tablet manufacturers don't seem to know where to put it. So the solution from HP is not original - to hide it in a loop on the stand.

In general, there is nothing unusual about the stylus. There's a select button, an erase button, and an eraser button that doesn't actually erase, but just launches OneNote. And it’s a great mystery why they changed it with the “erase” button.

There is an AAAA battery inside the stylus. If you're a digital artist, you'll love the fact that the Wacom digitizer boasts 2,048 pressure levels, which is double that of the Surfact Pro 4. It's hard to imagine anyone else needing that many pressure levels.

The speakers on the tablet, although from Bang & Olufsen, are still somewhat weak. Especially compared to the Surface's three surprisingly loud speakers.

The Elite x2 is part of a new generation of USB-C tablets, offering both the port itself and Thunderbolt and USB 3.1 capabilities with an adapter. There's also a regular USB 3.0 port. And inside the tablet there is Wi-Fi 2x2 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, wireless display WiGig, as well as an additional LTE module for broadband access. HP hasn't forgotten about the MicroSD slot either.

The front camera is only 2 megapixels. The main camera is 5 MP. Rear cameras useful for scanning documents and recording meetings, but front cameras of this level are no longer suitable for full-fledged Skype calls.

Benchmarks give the tablet good scores. At 1080p x 2 it even outperforms its competitors. Overall, Elite x2 even exceeds expectations. You don't expect much from a tablet with a passive cooling system.

There are serious doubts that you will play any powerful 3D games on the x2 Elite (lately even free games Windows 10 games like Forza Motorsport 6: Apex require a dedicated GPU), we tested the x2 Elite against the competition using 3DMark. And it turns out that it comes close to Core-based i5 systems. And this is already a telling indicator.

As for battery life, the Elite x2 performed well, lasting 7 hours and 4 minutes when playing high-definition video. Although if you want the most powerful battery, then pay attention to Samsung Galaxy S TabPro. It will work for a full 8 hours and 50 minutes in this mode.

If you don't end up giving up Elite x2 1012 G1 Because of the price, nothing else will disappoint you. The Vpro package is aimed directly at corporate clients. This is a tablet, which, if necessary, will be controlled from the outside and monitored in every possible way. There is only one recommendation: hold it with your hand when kneeling.
