In this short guide, we tried to briefly talk about all the main features. To unlock the full potential of your device, we recommend reading the prepared Apple(unfortunately, it is currently only available on English language). If after reading this manual If you still have some exciting question, don’t hesitate to ask us in the comments, we will try to help.

In fact, this is not a feuilleton or even a humoresque. Marketing pressure from Apple, a hundredfold strengthened by the “herd feeling”, when in fact, in an orderly tone, the need to have something from equipment with Apple logo, does its job. The most desired gift is an iPhone. The most popular gift for New Year- iPhone. The most “corporate” gift - an engraved iPhone! Therefore, not considering a topic like “oh, how beautiful it is, but I clicked somewhere...” is unacceptable and to some extent impolite towards readers, especially since many do not know what to do immediately after the purchase. Let's fill the gap.

One, even more or less proper guidance At the beginning of using the device, there is no device - after all, no one except you knows what you need the iPhone for.

There can be a great variety of scenarios for using such technology: from the simplest “call - write SMS”, scroll through the VKontakte feed to every minute load corporate mail, hundreds of messages on Skype and constantly updated joint task lists while working on a project in . Not to mention the developers and testers, they are literally engaged in torturing their devices with alpha and beta versions of programs and firmware. Let's hope they don't come here to visit us.

So, you have the treasured box in your hands, your hands are shaking a little, the iPhone is carefully and tremblingly removed from the packaging. The level of adrenaline in the blood slowly drops, along with this comes the realization that it’s time to turn on the smartphone. And already at this stage questions arise.

As a warning, here's what needs to be said. Immediately after purchasing, you shouldn’t give your iPhone into the hands of enterprising and helpful sales consultants who promise you to “set up everything and everyone, install all the applications from the App Store for a thousand” and stuff like that. Of course, you want to quickly turn on the newfound object of desire and start using it, but be patient a little, try to figure it out yourself initially, or find a friend or acquaintance and ask him to help you at the initial stage. Well, or read it. The fact is that almost all services and iPhone features are tied to your unique account in , and this is your personal data, your logins and passwords, your payment information. And no one will give you a guarantee that the sales consultant will not use such information. Or he simply forgets to delete something from the corporate computer. Or something even worse.

It often happens that sellers are careless with the goods they sell, and your meticulous perfectionism will suffer unbearably from scratches on the body of a freshly printed device, received before even leaving the store. If you really want to exploit the service personnel behind the counter, then the most that a sales consultant can help you with is to tell you how to correctly remove the tray and insert a nano-SIM card. It should be noted that this simple procedure causes difficulties for many. There was a case, and I was an involuntary witness, when two girls brought a recently purchased product to the branch of the largest reseller. Apple iPhone 4s with completely torn apart and torn apart back cover, so that the insides and battery were visible. When the consultant asked what ladies with blond hair wanted and how it happened, they said with an arrogant look: “This iPhone of yours is bullshit - you can’t even take out a SIM card just like that!”

In the end, having figured out the device and its functions yourself, starting from the very basics, it will be much easier for you to use it in the future. And you might even like it.

So, what is this article about and for whom? In order not to be bombarded with floppy disks, video cassettes and other waste products, I want to make it clear right away: this article is not so much for Habr readers, but for their loved ones.

Imagine a scenario - someone close to you has an iPhone or iPad, but he is not one of those who will meticulously study a multi-page manual and every menu item. It is precisely for such people that I am writing this article.

Of course, you can use an i-gadget without instructions, but you may miss out on something useful.

But I I highly recommend reading this entire article. It is unlikely that you will remember how all the described functionality is used and immediately run to use everything, but it will be ingrained in your head that such functionality is present at all. And when you begin to miss him, then you will remember this article.

Although I wanted it to be shorter, there are a lot of nuances - so the text still turned out to be voluminous... Yes, and the information is grouped thematically, and not by complexity. So don’t give up in the middle :) To make it not too boring, I will entertain you with pictures as much as possible.

So, let's go!

What's wrong with the SIM card?

If you don’t know, iPhones and iPads use their own SIM card format - microsim. You have two options - either, armed with scissors, cut your full-length SIM card to a micro version (there are a lot of instructions on this, for example - here). Just keep in mind that even if properly cut, not every SIM card will work - some old ones don’t want to work.

Or, just go to a communication store and they will give you a micro-SIM card while blocking the old one. The number, of course, will be saved. I don’t know about other operators, but with MTS it takes 2 minutes and is free. Just take your passport.

How to turn it on?

Do not laugh. After purchasing a new iPhone and clicking “turn on”, you will find that it asks for a SIM card and activation.

We sorted out the SIM card. What about activation?

To activate, you will need a computer (if your phone is on iOS 4), or just WiFi (for iOS 5). In general, you can hear the myth that you can’t use an iPhone without a computer. It is not true. A computer is required only when you first turn on the device on iOS 4. That is. if you have a new iPhone 4S, you don't even need a computer.

To activate your phone on iOS 4, install iTunes on your computer, connect your phone to your computer, and then follow the instructions. Everything is simple there.

However, I advise you to install iTunes in any case, even if you activate the phone via WiFi. Because it is an indispensable tool.

Let me immediately note a few points that may be of interest to you:

  • If you are a girl, then take care of purchasing an iPhone case. It's glass on both sides. And the glass scratches quite easily (no matter what marketers say). Especially in a woman's handbag :)
  • About protective film on the screen - this is a matter of taste, of course. But keep in mind that the screen is coated with a special oleophobic coating that repels grease. This allows the phone to not get so dirty and can be wiped clean with a slight movement of a cloth (and simply when taken out of a pocket/case). If you stick a film, you will lose this effect.
  • As a stand/night charger, I advise you to buy a docking station (you can order it on eBay for $3 with delivery). Just keep in mind that stands with a headphone jack usually put the phone into silent mode when you put it down (if you don't like this, you can fix this by cutting the trace near the single resistor inside the stand).
  • When traveling abroad, be sure to turn off “data transmission”. So as not to open it accidentally Google Maps or not updating the weather for a lot of money in roaming.

How can I transfer contacts from my old phone?

Sync your old phone with Outlook. For each phone model this is done in its own way, using special program from the manufacturer.

And then - synchronize your Outlook contacts with iTunes - and it will upload them to the iPhone.

How to download photos/music/videos, etc.?

For all this it is used iTunes program. A little slow, but that's iTunes. Yes, and the downloading/uploading process is called “synchronization”. You select in iTunes what you want to upload to your phone, and then click the “sync” button. At the same time in reverse side- photos from your phone/tablet are copied to your computer.

By the way, what about the video? I heard that you can't just watch an avi movie...

Yes. You just can't look at it. But once you install a special player, you can watch anything you want by simply transferring files to your phone. I recommend AVPlayer. Watches everything in the world - avi (xvid, divx), mkv, etc.

Oh, and there’s no flash on i-devices!

Yes. No flash. But I’ve been using Apple devices for several years now - and I’ve never noticed! All videos from contact, youtube, vimeo, etc. - perfectly reproduced. And the fact that I don’t see flash banners is only a plus.

What is AppStore? Do I need to register?

Appstore is a store of applications and games. It is from here and only from here that you can install applications (there are also unofficial way- jailbreak, but more about it below).

You can (and should) buy from the app store directly with a credit card. Don't be afraid of the prices. Most of the useful stuff is free or costs $1.

If you don’t have a credit card (you need one that you can use to pay on the Internet), then you can register without it - for this you need to try to buy free application.

Typing and keyboard.

"Kommersant" on the iPhone is hidden on the soft sign button. Just hold it a little longer.

In addition, in a similar way you can type different symbols type ₩ ¿ ", etc. And also, in Safari, by holding down the ".com" button you can call up a list with other zones (.net, .org, .ru, etc.)

By the way, there is also a reason to disable auto-correction. Because by default, by writing a word that the device considers incorrect and pressing the space bar after it, you will automatically replace the word with the “correct” one. Sometimes when you use words not from the dictionary, you can find surprising results after sending the message :)

WITH comma more difficult. Or switch to symbols, type a comma and press space - the layout itself will return to letters. Or hold down the button to switch to the character register and, without lifting it, move your finger to the comma.

To enable the mode Caps Lock (all caps) - press the case change button twice (the one with the up arrow).

iPad. Can split keyboard into 2 halves - just hold down the button with the keyboard and pull it up.

Editing text.

Point your finger at the text and the cursor will move to the specified location. For more precise positioning, do not release your finger and start moving it over the text - a magnifying glass will appear.

You can undo an action by shaking it.

Icons on the desktop.

Everything here is simple and quite obvious. Click on any icon and hold. After a few seconds the icons will begin to tremble. Now you can drag them around. If you throw one on top of the other, they will create a folder. Here you can also delete applications (by tapping on the red minuses in the corners). Exit editing mode - Home (1 time).

You may want to remove some of the standard icons (iTunes, FaceTime) to avoid cluttering your desk. They cannot be deleted, but they can be disabled in Settings → Restrictions.

Notifications.

Some apps send you notifications. For example, a VKontakte client sends you all incoming messages. The way notifications are displayed can always be selected in Settings → Notifications. There you can choose whether there will be sound, whether notifications should be displayed immediately on the screen (as SMS), on the locked screen, whether they will go to the notification center, etc.

By the way, regarding notification center- all your notifications are stored here. To open it, pull the top strip with the clock down.

The weather can also be displayed here.

Unobvious buttons.

If you simultaneously press the “Home” button (round, under the screen) and the power button (on the top end), you will take a screenshot.

Double-clicking “Home” on a locked phone (for iOS version 5.0) - quick call to the camera (for 5.1 - move the slider up). You can take pictures with the volume up button (including on the headset, which is good so as not to introduce unnecessary shaking into the frame). This brings up the interface for managing the music player (you can control playback without unlocking the phone).

If the phone does not respond to the power button and is frozen, then press Home + Power (as for taking a screenshot) and hold for 15 seconds. As soon as the apple appears, release it.

Fast forward.

IN notebook or in Safari, to quickly return to the top of the list (top of the page) - click on top line with a clock.

If someone calls, but you don’t want to answer the phone, press the off button once. The call will not be dropped, but the phone will continue to ring silently.

A second press will reset the call.

In addition, if during a conversation you need to play Angry Birds or rummage through your notebook, you can safely press the “Home” button. She will give you access to the phone, but the conversation will remain.

By the way, pay attention - at the top of the phone (next to the speaker) there is a proximity sensor that turns off the screen during a conversation when the phone is close to the head/cheek (by the way, now remember in how many films you have seen how the hero communicates on iPhone with glowing screen! An iPhone will not do this in talk mode). So, if during a conversation you take the phone away from your ear, the sensor will work and turn the screen back on (give it a second or two for this). Just don't block it with your hand top part phone, otherwise the screen will not turn on (I repeat - the sensor only works during a conversation).

Multitasking. Switching applications.

Click "Home" button twice in a row and a panel with applications will open at the bottom. These are the applications that were launched in Lately. The list is scrolled left and right using swipes (by the way, if you scroll it to the very left, you can find there quick adjustment brightness (for iPad) / volume (for iPhone) and player control).

Multitasking in iOS is tricky. When you minimize an app, it doesn't necessarily close it. In most cases, it still hangs in memory (although it does not work). This is why some applications take a long time to launch when first launched, but then instantly. However, later, when the system decides that it needs memory, it can kill the application (it will still remain in the list).

What is this list for?

Firstly - you can open any of the recent applications or quickly switch between applications. Sometimes this is more convenient than looking for an icon on the desktop.

And secondly, you can forcibly kill any application from memory. This may be useful when we're talking about again about the navigator (if you don’t want it to eat up the battery in the background and give you directions even when you’re already at home). Another option is when the application is buggy and you want to completely restart it.

To close an app, hold your finger over the apps in the list at the bottom (sort of like you do on the desktop to drag icons). Then red “minus” buttons will appear for each icon, with which you can close them.

So if you have a suspicion that some application is sitting in the background and eating up the battery using, for example, GPS or Internet traffic - kill it!

How to erase a letter, call, etc.?

To erase any element in iOS, a horizontal swipe (swipe with your finger) is widely used. A delete button will appear:

SMS delivery report.

For some reason, Apple did not include this option in the phone's capabilities (apparently, it considered it unnecessary). But there is a way out. As a rule, to start receiving SMS delivery reports, you need to change the SMS center and send some special team. All this is free. What and where to send depends on the operator (or even on the region?). Information on this topic can be found on the Internet. Here is one of the articles: ibobr.ru/manual/iphone-otchet-o-dostavke-sms.html (MTS, Megafon, Beeline)

Free SMS/mms and iMessage.

Starting from 5th iOS versions The SMS message writer has been merged with the iMessage service, which allows you to send text and pictures over the Internet to those who also use this service.

In fact, we receive cheap sms (if you have an Internet connection, at the price of mobile traffic) between iPhones.

Nothing is required from you. Just turn on iMessage and that's it (Settings → Messages → iMessage). And write regular SMS. The phone itself will figure out whether the recipient has iMessage on the other end or not. And if there is, it will send your text/picture via the Internet. You will understand that your interlocutor has iMessage enabled by the blue “send” button and by your blue messages (instead of the usual green).

What is iCloud and why do I need it?

iCloud is a service cloud storage data (i.e. when your photos, contacts, etc. are uploaded to Apple server and are stored there (just in case or for synchronizing several i-devices).

Among the convenient and useful, I can note the service " Photostream". The bottom line is this - everything that you photograph is automatically uploaded to the cloud and automatically ends up on all devices that have access to it. That is, if you have an iPhone, iPad and regular computer(on Windows or MacOS) - then by turning on the “photo stream” and taking a photo on your iPhone, it will literally immediately go to your iPad and to a folder on your computer. No wires or downloading photos. And of course this only works over WiFi. Those. the phone will not rush to upload a photo to the cloud, wasting mobile traffic. You walked around, took some photos, came home, your phone picked up home WiFi and he silently threw all the photos into the cloud, and from there they got to your computer and iPad.

Very comfortably. All photos are always at hand on all devices. Connects in “settings”.

Theft/loss protection.

There, in iCloud settings I recommend turning on “Find My iPhone”. This will allow you, if your device is lost/stolen, to see where it is located on the map, block it remotely, send a message to it, and even erase all information.

Just to ensure that someone who finds/steals your device cannot easily disable this setting, limit changing it with a password. This is turned on in Settings → General → Restrictions → Accounts→ Disable change.

Just don't flatter yourself. This is not a panacea. If the person into whose hands your device has fallen is at least a little “in the know,” then he can easily bypass this protection by complete flashing devices.

What applications should I install?

I'll give you a list useful applications, which anyone may need in everyday life.
  • Yandex maps(free) - sometimes more convenient (and more addresses/establishments) than in standard Google Maps + traffic jams. Searching for the phone number of a store using Yandex cards is a pleasure! There is a schedule for building bridges for St. Petersburg.
  • If you're driving, it's definitely free. Yandex Navigator
  • Poster, Film poster, Timeout(free) - see where which film is shown, ratings for clubs, cafes, etc. Personally, I recommend Afisha.
  • Yandex Metro(free) - metro map with an estimate of how long the trip will take, taking into account train speeds, transfers, etc.
  • Yandex Electric Trains(free) - train schedule
  • Gismeteo lite(free) - weather forecast, guesses the weather better than the built-in “weather”.
  • Flashlight(free) - the flash shines like a flashlight, very bright. In any case, you have to have it.
  • In contact with(official, free) - favorite social network. the network is always at hand, in addition, it is possible to set up notifications so that all messages are sent to you almost immediately on your phone (like SMS), etc. Just look, don’t get confused - download exactly official application from the VKontakte team, and not all kinds of leftists, of which there are about a dozen. I don't know what's wrong with Classmates, but I think that there is also an application. Like Facebook"Oh, of course.
  • Skype(free) - Useful to have. It’s not even necessary to communicate on Skype. Sometimes it is an irreplaceable thing, for example when you are roaming, but there is free WiFi, then using Skype you can call your home country for pennies.
  • AppShopper(free) - An application that monitors discounts in the AppStore. Very often, something that costs $1 can be snatched for free, and something that costs $5 can be snatched for 1 dollar.
  • AVPlayer- Omnivorous video player.
  • Air Video- Allows you to watch videos stored on your computer via WiFi. Those. If you like to lie on the couch with your iPad and watch a movie, but you don’t want to download the video to the device itself every time, then this is for you.
  • Photoshop Express, Instagram(both are free) - Photo editors - adjust brightness, apply effects.

What to play? I don’t play like that... but what if?

If you are not a fan of games, but want to have something to sometimes spend 5 minutes poking at your phone, then I will not be original here. (By the way, many games have free lite versions, in which there are few levels, but with the help of which you can evaluate the toy)

I advise Angry Birds(there are many versions - Space, Rio, Seasons, take the usual ones for starters).

AND Cut the Rope.

I also recommend" Crocodile Swampy" (Where is my water?).

How not to pay for applications. Jailbreak.

Here I will not go into details, but will simply describe the most important things that any owner of an Apple device should know.

As I already said, initially only applications from the AppStore can be installed on the i-gadget. And this means that for paid applications- you will have to pay. And also that you will not be able to install various interface changes and other things that Apple did not allow in their store (Apple is categorically against changing their interface).

But there is a way out - jailbreak (not to be confused with unlocking). Jailbreaking is a process where, using special utilities opens full access to the phone after which you can easily install any applications/games (including absolutely free) and other goodies.

I won’t write about how to jailbreak. A specialist or Google will help you here. I'll only tell you the basic things you need to know.

  • We will restore the jailbreak. Those. you can always roll back to the “official” firmware. By the way, if you have a broken device, do not update the firmware under any circumstances, because... then the jail will fly off. In addition, not every firmware version can be jailbroken (usually a jail for new firmware versions does not appear immediately).
  • Not every i-gadget can be broken. For example, there is no normal jail for the iPhone 4S and iPad New yet. But hackers are working hard :)
  • Jailbreaking does not in any way prevent you from continuing to use the official AppStore and officially purchasing applications there if you want.
  • There are two types of jailbreak - tethered and untethered. I highly recommend using only unattached ones. “Tethering” means that to turn on the phone you will have to perform tricky manipulations on the computer, which means that if you have to turn off the phone while not at home, you will not turn it back on until you get to the computer. Untethered jailbreak has no such disadvantage and does not cause any discomfort.

I don't mind paying $1 for the game, should I jailbreak it?

I'll just say that jailbreaking is not only free installation applications.

Jail allows you to install various interface changes (tweaks).

  • SBSettings(quick buttons to turn on/off Wi-Fi, cellular data and so on)
  • iBooksFix2- cures iBooks crash after jailbreak
  • KuaiDial- this is practically the main reason why I do Jail. Flexible change of dialer and SMS. For me, the most important functions are avatars in all call lists (not just “favorites”) and in SMS chats. I'm used to them. :) (in addition, there is the possibility of a black list, a list of operator codes, etc. - but I personally don’t really need this)
