The largest postal services. How to choose a mail service

» about two email services: Tutanota and ProtonMail and explained which one to choose and why.

Today you don’t often hear about the importance of private correspondence, methods of protecting it and encrypting correspondence. But I still decided to take a look at two popular email services with end-to-end encryption: Tutanota and ProtonMail. They offer secure correspondence with all emails encrypted. Let's take a closer look at what both services provide, and whether it is worth hiding your correspondence from the FSB or other intelligence services and competitors.

Tutanota

Tutanota is a free email service from the Germans that provides encryption of email correspondence for its clients.
  • Russian-language interface.
  • Easy registration.
  • Free tariff.
  • Web version, iOS and Android.
  • Possibility to deploy a server on your domain.
Minuses:
  • The free account only has 1 GB of storage.
  • No support for cloud storage.
  • No two-factor authentication.
  • It is not possible for third-party clients to receive mail via IMAP.
Registering with the service is much easier than with regular email providers. All you need to do is select a mailbox name and specify a password, after which you can immediately start using your new secure mail.

As you can see from the screenshot below, Tutanota does not have a colorful interface. But this is not the main thing here. As with any email service, there is a standard distribution of letters into folders: Inbox, Drafts, Sent Items, Trash, Archive and Spam. When creating a new letter or replying to a received one, you will also find all the standard functions: forwarding, hidden recipients, and more. You can also attach files to letters.

You can set up filtering rules for incoming emails. One of the interesting things in Tutanota is the ability to attach several aliases to one mailbox. However, this option is only available in the paid version of the service. The maximum limit for a letter including attachments is 25 MB.

About security

Like most security services, Tutanota has posted its source code on Github. Therefore, the developer community can independently check the service code for “bookmarks” and other unsafe things.

Data encryption and decryption always occurs locally on the device when logging into the service. Your password is used as the encryption key. Therefore, you should not forget it, since even the developers are not able to help you remember it. The exception is the corporate version of Tutanota. In it, the domain administrator can reset user passwords.

All correspondence is encrypted end-to-end and is not transferred to any third parties. The emails themselves are encrypted: subject, content, attachments and contact list. Tutanota only has access to message metadata, such as the sender, recipient and date of the message. Which, in principle, is understandable, but the developers promise full encryption of letters in the future.

Messages are encrypted when sent between Tutanota users using standardized AES algorithms with an encryption key of 128 bits and RSA with 2048 bits. Emails to third-party services are encrypted using AES 128 bit. The encryption algorithm is clearly shown in the picture below, which shows the sending and receiving of letters inside and outside the service.

There are two ways to send a letter to another mail service: secure and not. Let's talk about a secure method. To send such letters, you need to exchange a unique password with the recipient, which will encrypt all your correspondence. This can be done through any third-party service or verbally. After sending the letter for the first time and the recipient entering the password, the encryption key is saved in your address book and you can forget about it. All mail will be automatically encrypted.

Such emails cannot be viewed in standard email clients. The recipient will receive a link through which he can access the letter in a computer or smartphone browser.

Tutanota servers are located in Germany, which means the service is subject to the laws of this country. But in any case, the developers cannot disclose the correspondence. As I said above, all correspondence is encrypted locally and a third party cannot access it.

The anonymity of the service is noticeable already at the registration stage, where no personal data is required from you. IP addresses are not stored by the service and are cut off when sending letters. This way your location is always hidden. You can pay for premium features with the anonymous currency Bitcoin. Of course, the service keeps technical logs to handle errors. But they are stored for 14 days and do not contain any personal information about the user.

ProtonMail

Now let's talk about the more well-known service for secure mail exchange ProtonMail.
  • Web interface and mobile applications.
  • Two-factor authentication.
  • Fine-tuning appearance.
  • Security Settings.
  • Encryption using PGP.
Minuses:
  • There is no Russian language.
  • The free version only allows 150 messages per day.
  • The free version has 500 MB of storage.
  • The restrictions are expanding, but remain even in the paid version (there is a tariff plan without restrictions).
ProtonMail does not ask for any personal information during registration. You are required to select a name for the mail and specify a password with which the letters will be encrypted. An optional field is an additional email address to which you can recover your password. During the registration process, encryption keys are generated, and upon completion, a captcha appears to verify your humanity.

ProtonMail's interface is less ascetic than that of its brother. Here, in addition to standard mail functions, you can also find such familiar things as stars for favorite messages and labels. You can customize the interface and change the display of letters from horizontal to vertical. Messages can be sorted according to various parameters. For example, by date or volume. In addition, the developers have provided a search by mail.

In general, ProtonMail is more similar to the mail services we are used to, and its functions are not inferior to its competitors. Moving letters, viewing the “body” of the letter, convenient formatting and much more. In the service settings, you can enable two-factor authentication, disable the ability to recover your password, and configure the logging level.

About security

All data transmitted through the service is protected by encryption. The body and attachments of the email are end-to-end encrypted, but the subject of the email is not protected. This is done because the developers use the PGP algorithm, which depends on the SMTP data transfer standards. The developers made this concession so as not to limit the encryption of letters only between clients of the service. The PGP algorithm allows you to use correspondence regardless of the email client you use.

To send emails outside the service, you can use a protected method or an unprotected one. In the first case, your emails remain end-to-end encrypted. In the second, the TLS encryption method will be used to send letters, which is supported by most popular email services. However, in this case, third parties have the opportunity to gain access to your correspondence. At the same time, all mail inside ProtonMail is not available to third parties, regardless of the method of sending letters.

ProtonMail servers are located in Switzerland and the developer is subject to the laws of this country. Upon legal request from the court, developers are able to provide the subject line of all letters.

Since the entire service infrastructure is based on working with the PGP algorithm, the developer’s website does not describe specific encryption characteristics. But Wikipedia knows everything:

“PGP encryption is accomplished sequentially by hashing, data compression, symmetric key encryption, and finally public key encryption, with each step being one of several supported algorithms. Symmetric encryption is performed using one of seven symmetric algorithms (AES, CAST5, 3DES, IDEA, Twofish, Blowfish, Camellia) on the session key. The session key is generated using a cryptographically secure pseudo-random number generator. The session key is encrypted with the recipient's public key using RSA or Elgamal algorithms (depending on the recipient's key type). Each public key corresponds to a username or email address. The first version of the system was called the Web of Trust and was opposed to the X.509 system, which used a hierarchical approach and was based on certificate authorities, which was added to PGP later. Modern versions of PGP include both methods"

Which service should you choose?

Both services show themselves to be excellent solutions for protecting private email correspondence, and you can choose either of them. The main selection parameters remain price and compatibility with other email clients.

A cheaper option is Tutanota. But there are several main disadvantages. First: you will not be able to use third-party email clients. Second: recipients of your letters in third-party services will be forced to read the correspondence in a browser by entering a password.

ProtonMail is a kind of encrypted mail for “housewives”. Cons: price. Most likely, you will have to pay a subscription to the service. On the other hand, you will get the opportunity to communicate seamlessly with the whole world, regardless of the email provider or client.

On April 21, the “Netology” course launches. On it we will talk about what it is, what methods of analysis are available, what the systems are built on and how they work, and we will learn how to actually work with big data arrays. By working with Big Data, you can improve your skills, learn how to use data in life and work, and understand why you should encrypt or not encrypt your correspondence.

“What is email?” - one of the most popular questions asked by novice Internet users. Need I say how justified this curiosity is? After all, e-mail (mailbox), by its essence and functions, is an integral and mandatory attribute even for ordinary users.

So, dear reader, if you are taking your first steps in the field of online digital communications, this article will definitely benefit you. In it you will get acquainted with the best email services, learn about their functional advantages and features. Plus, after reading the reviews, you won’t rack your brain over choosing an email. You will already know exactly which email service is best for you.

Definition and types of e-mail

Well, first, let's look at the answer to the question posed at the beginning of the article:

An electronic mailbox is a special online service that allows an Internet user to send text messages and files (photos, videos, documents) to other users via a network connection. Also, an e-mail (box) can be used to activate and verify an account during the registration process on other web services - forums, blogs, websites.

All mail services operating on the Internet are divided into two large groups according to the deadline for providing mailboxes:

  1. Permanent (registered e-mail can be used for an unlimited amount of time - 1, 2 years, 5 years, etc.). They are best suited for business correspondence, reading mailings from services, and as contact information.
  2. Temporary (the generated profile self-destructs along with all the data in it after a specified period of time - after 10-20 minutes, half an hour or 1 month). Designed to hide a permanent e-mail in order to combat spam, to anonymously send messages and perform quick registration on sites if there is no permanent e-mail.

Popular mail services

Here is a list of web email resources that have proven themselves in practice among beginners and advanced users. Let's look at them according to the categories described above.

Note. All services described in this article are free.

Permanent

Gmail

A service from the creators of the legendary Google search engine. Supports almost all current protocols used for sending data over Internet channels (IMAP, POP3, SMTP). In 2012, it surpassed its main competitor, Microsoft's email service, in popularity. According to statistical studies, its user audience is over 420 million people.

Gmail differs from its analogues in its convenient management and a huge number of useful additional options. The service allows you to quickly find the necessary “thread” of correspondence, letter, address, contact. It reliably protects your profile from advertising and viral mailings using a powerful spam filter: spam is detected and blocked with high accuracy. Fully supports work on iOS and Android mobile platforms.

You can send large files using Gmail. By default, a registered user on Google Mail is provided with 15 GB of file storage.

One of the best solutions for sending virtual correspondence on the RuNet. The service has been operating on the Internet since 2000. It is equipped with an automatic filter for advertising and potentially dangerous mailings - “Spam Defense”, as well as the Dr.Web anti-virus module, which checks outgoing and incoming letters for the presence of malware.

Yandex mail is used monthly by over 27 million people. It sends over 130 million letters per day (not counting spam). It integrates Yandex remote cloud storage. The disk is 10 GB in size, which allows you to send “heavy” files through the profile.

In 2012, according to ComScore, Yandex.Mail was awarded the honorary title “Europe’s fastest growing service.”

According to social research by the Galappa Institute, in the spring of 2015, the Mail.ru service was the most popular among Russian users. The number of its visitors was over 17.1 million people in the browser version and 1.997 million people. in mobile.

The mailbox on Mail.ru is equipped with all the functions necessary to work with incoming and outgoing letters (filtering, contact list, groups, attaching files). Has a "strict" spam filter that automatically sends all unwanted messages to the Spam folder. Supports multi-authorization mode (simultaneous use of several accounts).

Ensures secure data exchange: information is transferred using the HHTPS protocol. In addition to the password, it provides additional means of protection against hacking and unauthorized access: verification by phone, additional e-mail, two-step verification, scanning of letters with the Kaspersky anti-virus utility.

Mail from the Russian company Rambler. It was launched in August 2000. Equipped with the anti-spam module “RspamD” and the anti-virus service ClamAV. On average, it sends out up to 90 million letters per day.

It has a minimalistic design, but has all the necessary functions for convenient management of correspondence. Supports creating your own rules for blocking specified addresses. Sorts correspondence and automatically saves unsent letters in the “Drafts” folder.

In Russian it is pronounced as "yahu". One of the very first email services to appear on the Internet. Very easy to use: sends text messages and files in just a few mouse clicks. Able to work with multiple accounts simultaneously. By default, it provides registered users with 1GB of file storage. It has all the necessary software tools to connect to your e-mail account from other services (Outlook, Gmail).

Mail from the creators of the Windows operating system - Microsoft. Ideal for organizing communications with business partners and colleagues. It is equipped with a well-thought-out interface: there are no unnecessary buttons or complex settings; all the options necessary for managing correspondence are visible. It has multi-level protection at the stage of authorization in the profile and in the process of sending letters: login using a temporary password, identification via phone, etc. Expands file storage capacity as the box is used.

Can recover deleted emails, even if they were deleted from the Trash. Provides the ability to use email address aliases for registrations on third-party services. Equipped with an HTML/CSS code editor.

Temporary emails

Provides a full-fledged mailbox for 10 minutes. But at the user’s request, it can extend its existence for another 10-30 minutes. In a temporary profile, you can read all incoming messages with attachments and send a letter to any recipient. And also, if necessary, set up forwarding to a real mailbox. The address on crazymailing.com is generated automatically.

Provides a mailbox for an unlimited period of time. (It will function until the page is closed in the browser.) Accepts emails with attachments, but does not support sending emails. Equipped with a built-in service for forwarding correspondence to another mailbox. It is absolutely safe and does not violate data confidentiality: upon completion of the profile, all data contained in it is destroyed. A mailbox on the site is created automatically without registration.

A powerful web resource for anonymously sending text files and media content without creating a mailbox. Can transfer data up to 50 GB. Does not require creating an account or providing personal information. Activates sending in just a few mouse clicks.

After opening the page in the browser, it provides the address for 10 minutes. Using additional buttons in the panel, you can extend its operation (reset the timer), as well as copy the generated address to the clipboard (for pasting on another site).

A “classic” service that provides ten-minute boxes. Displays received letters in the “Inbox” block, indicates the sender’s e-mail, the title of the letter and the time of receipt. It has additional options: “extend for another 10 minutes,” “refresh the page,” “generate another address.”

Hello, dear readers of the blog site. Email is my main source of communication with the “outside world.” I do not accept either , or any other messengers that allow real-time communication.

It's hard to say why. It is possible that they are a great distraction due to the need to respond, while a message received by email may well wait, because the respondent who sent it does not particularly expect a quick response.

But in addition to direct communication, there are always many other things connected to the email box - from social networks to payment systems. Often, the inability to log into your once created and forgotten mail can cost you considerable nerves when restoring access to any service. Therefore, I offer with all my might be careful when choosing a free mailbox and opportunities to restore access to it.

Another important aspect that may influence your choice is the correspondence received by your email. For example, an attacker, having gained access to your mailbox, can (or something compromising you). Moreover, they almost always break mail automatically (indiscriminately), so everyone without exception is at risk.

And, of course, the tedious spam that rains down on your “soap” in an increasing stream, and in the absence of a sane spam cutter on the service, can turn working with correspondence into torture. That's why I'll try to do an express analysis of the most popular email systems in RuNet(free, of course) and at the end I will invite you to vote for the service that you consider the most successful solution. Together, I think, we will get the “average temperature in the hospital,” which may differ radically from my personal judgment. I hope it will be interesting.

Email mail - selection criteria, registration and login nuances

In RuNet, words like “electronic”, “soap” (from mail) or: E-mail or Email (although it would be more correct to use Email) are often used to denote email. Personally, I use either “mail” or “soap” in everyday life, although this does not change the essence.

I think it’s not worth saying, but this term, curiously, has a lot of alternative options. For example, in the bourgeoisie it is customary to denote it with the word Email (however, until recently they wrote E-mail, but now the rules have changed and the correct option is the one where the hyphen is not placed).

The technology itself for transmitting emails directly between the sender and the addressee originated back in 1965, and, perhaps, it is even older than the Internet itself (you can read about that using the links provided). True, the first mailer intended for public access appeared only in 1996 (it was). At the moment, this technology has already been sufficiently refined and standardized (POP3, SMTP or IMAP protocols are used). However, the main problem still remains.

At a slightly earlier stage of the existence of Email, there were also in RuNet, which, after passing through a number of mail servers, turned the text into an unreadable and difficult to recover set of gibberish. Nowadays this is extremely rare. But lately it has become a serious problem (up to 90% of all correspondence can be spam), which comes even to a newly created (registered) mailbox.

The first mail services in RuNet appeared quite a long time ago. The oldest of them is email from Mail.ru, which opened already in the last millennium (in 1998) and offered us the opportunity for the first time to create a free mailbox in a Russian-language interface in order to receive correspondence from our friends or some , which I have already written about in some detail.

Actually, it is this fact that most likely became predetermining in the current arrangement of free email services on the RuNet market:

The information on the graph is really a year and a half ago, but in general it shows the preferences of RuNet users quite well. But it should be taken into account that many users, having mailboxes, for example, on Mail.ru, do not use this service itself, but redirect mail to their main mailbox (for example, I have hosted it in Gmail since 2005).

Before you sign up for email, consider...

I would like to say right away without being tied to any service.

  1. Firstly, it is now difficult to choose a name for your Email at will, because tens of millions of users who registered before you have sorted out everything that is popular, not so popular, and even completely exotic. You will either have to show remarkable imagination, or choose something that is not very memorable.
  2. Secondly, in addition to your login (the name of your future email), you also specify a password when registering. For convenience, many of us use simple passwords (for example, before my mailbox was hacked, I had the password “123456” on it, because I thought that no one needed it for nothing), or they indicate the same password during registration almost every time. all services (social networks, payment systems, forums, mailers and others). In both cases you are taking a lot of risks, because:
    1. Absolutely any email account is valuable to a hacker, because he will then sell it, along with a bunch of others, to spammers at a reasonable price, and for this you can get your account blocked in your free email service. Hacking is carried out by automatic selection using a database of the most popular combinations or special dictionaries.
    2. Having scanned the contents of your Email programmatically, the attacker will extract from it accounts on social networks, monetary systems, data for accessing forums and other things necessary in the hacker’s life, which can then be sold wholesale or retail (or monetized independently).
    3. Even if you can’t find the passwords for these useful things, you can always request their recovery, and in most cases the accounts will be linked again to this same hacked Email.
    4. And besides, the password and login for the mailbox are , which means they will allow you to access many services of Mail.ru, Yandex or Google (if you rent an email address from them), which again can lead to unpleasant consequences.
    5. In addition, they may begin to blackmail you in order to return the email box or the confidential data stored in it. There are a lot of options, and in this case there will usually be one payment method - paid SMS.
    6. Well, in the rarest case, you will be broken purposefully at the request of ill-wishers or competitors. In this case, only a really strong password and its recovery using an SMS message that will be sent to the cell phone number specified during registration can help.

Therefore, use my advice when registering in any service, and in order not to forget them later, . Well, if you really want to take security on your computer to its apogee, then you can’t do without it. As they say, if you are not paranoid, this does not mean that you are not being watched.

  3. Now in most email services you can use your mobile phone number, which you indicate when registering for an email service, or you can add it later in your profile settings. Of course, you can use the security question and answer the old fashioned way (if you remember them, which is far from a fact), but SMS to your phone is much more reliable and simpler.

Therefore, if you value your email account, it is better to provide them with your mobile phone number. Yes, you are disclosing your privacy to some extent, because if requested by the competent authorities, they can use your number to find out your settings. But if you are an “honest taxpayer,” then the convenience of restoring access to Email will be more important to you than the hypothetical exposure of your incognito. However, this conclusion is valid only in relation to the “whales” of Internet business, because they have no reason to leak your numbers to spammers or other “radishes”. IMHO.

Login to your email

It seems like a simple question - how to log into mail? However, there are several points that may be useful for a novice Internet user to know. When I created this blog, the main idea was that it is most difficult to find answers to the simplest questions, because for most they are self-evident, and answering, for example, on forums to “stupid questions” is considered the height of indecency (as a rule) . That’s why I decided to dwell a little more on the problem of logging into email.

In general, everything is as simple as shelling pears, but the main thing is don't accidentally fall for the bait phishers (fishermen), who, without seeing the catch, tell them your login and password through the login form. This not only applies, but also to any other services that require authorization (entering a login and password).

Therefore, if you work with emails via the web interface (you can also use an email client program on your computer, which will collect correspondence from all your mailboxes), then follow a few of my simple tips:

But in general to improve the convenience of working with mail you can use, for example, special extensions for browsers (you will need to tell them the login and password for your mailbox), which will quickly monitor new messages appearing in your inbox and somehow signal you about this. You can read about similar email gadgets for browsers or. There is an article about , but I’m afraid that few people have it installed, because Opera has been running on the Chrome engine for quite some time.

And finally, to work with a large volume of correspondence or with a large number of email accounts on different services, you may need mail client program. Personally, I use the M2 client built into the old Opera and am so used to it that I can’t even describe it in words. However, there are many other options, the most famous of which are probably Outlook from the Microsoft office suite and “The bat”. True, both of them are paid. And among the free ones, the most popular is probably Mozilla Thunderbird from the developer of the Firefox browser.

Which free email service should you choose?

In principle, there are quite a lot of them, but I will list only the main ones, which can be considered widespread and sufficiently proven to make a judgment about them. Of course, they are all free, but they differ in a number of indicators, such as:

  1. Ease of use (low barrier to entry)
  2. Built-in functionality
  3. Provided storage space for correspondence (size of email box)
  4. Security of use (hacking protection and account access recovery system). This also includes protection from viruses in letters and from scammers (phishers). In addition, the confidentiality of working with the mailbox is also important, because your messages can be intercepted on the way to the mail server. In this case, the best option would be to operate an online email service using the HTTPS protocol (with encryption of transmitted traffic).
  5. Availability of effective spam filtering (spam cutting)

All these characteristics together and serve as the main criteria for selection that service where it makes sense to register your Email. Below I will provide a brief description of the free email services participating today, and at the end of the article you will find a form to vote for one or more of them. The order in which they appear in this list can be considered arbitrary, because arranging them in accordance with my personal preferences would probably be incorrect in relation to the voting being carried out.

Gmail(Gmail, Jimail, aka Zhmail or simply Google mail) is a serious player both in the global free Email market and in the domestic RuNet market. It entered the game significantly late compared to its main competitors (beta was released in 2005, and a fully functional version of the service was released in 2009). However, he performed powerfully and managed to win an army of followers, partially drawing the audience away from competitors’ services that had already existed for a long time (in RuNet these are Mail.ru, Rambler and Yandex).

You can tell a lot about this email service, but why repeat it if it’s all already described:

If you are too lazy to read the descriptions given, then the information presented there will say that the Gmail interface is quite user-friendly, and the functionality of this service is not only ahead of all competitors, but is also constantly expanding with innovations being tested in the “laboratory”. Letters in it can be grouped, put into folders, assigned labels, and also built into chains to track the history of correspondence.

After registering your mailbox, you will have 15 gigabytes of free space at your disposal, which is quite enough to store regular correspondence. True, Gmail will divide the same 15 gigs, what you need to know.

In terms of security, your Email account will also be fine, because access to the online service is carried out via the HTTPS protocol (in the address bar you will see “https://” instead of the usual “http://”), and also, if you wish, you you can activate two-step authorization, which I highly recommend doing (read about it in the materials above). In this case, without an SMS message to your mobile phone, no one will be able to enter your email account (unless they use your computer and browser, which remember entering this code). This will also help you quickly restore access if you lose your password.

Spam cutting in Google email usually works perfectly. But sometimes, when sending mail to this mailbox, for example, from your hosting (that is), it can all end up in the Spam folder, but Gmail filters allow you to set up rules by which it will be automatically retrieved from there and sent to the Inbox folder " Filters in general can solve a number of problems, so I advise you to get to know them better.

  1. Yandex Mail— the service appeared a little later than the analogue from Mail.ru, but quite seriously managed to pull the blanket over itself (with users). Its new online interface is simple, well thought out and works quite quickly (you can customize it to suit your needs). Working with letters and filtering them is very convenient (the timeline, which allows you to view correspondence for a certain period, stands out especially).

There is a built-in translator (described here) and the ability to send free SMS notifications (you will need to indicate the phone number of the person to whom you are sending the letter)..

You can read more about the functionality of this email box here:

Yandex Mail divides the allotted space for correspondence, and the restrictions on the size of the mailbox are the same - 10-20 GB (depending on the conditions you fulfill, which you will find in the article about Ya.Disk). Security is also good here - HTTPS is used and it is possible to activate the e-mail login mode only after entering the confirmation code that is sent to your mobile phone.

According to my subjective impressions, the anti-spam filter used in Yandex called “SpamDefense” shows almost the best results among all the services listed in this article. Spam will not get through, but still, before cleaning, it would be better to quickly look through the “Spam” folder to see if it contains legitimate correspondence. What if... And this applies to any mailers.

  2. Email Mail.ru- the oldest service in RuNet. Several years ago, it underwent significant changes, which allowed it to compete on equal terms with its younger counterparts. Working with and managing correspondence does not cause any complaints - it is quite simple and effective. It is now possible to view letters received to all your Emails registered in Mail.ru in one window of the web interface, which is quite convenient.

In terms of security, after updating the service, it also became much better. The HTTPS protocol is used, and Kaspersky scans emails for viruses. You can also specify a mobile phone number, but, as I understand it, it is used only to restore lost access to your email account, although you can do something in the settings to strengthen security (on the “Password and Security” tab). Read more about this service here:

Email from Mail.ru after the update is positioned as dimensionless. In fact, you are initially provided with 10 GB for correspondence, and as the mailbox fills with letters (and attachments), the size will increase by a couple more gigs each time. Don’t forget, by the way, that they also have a service called , which is also closely related to email, but has its own free disk space of a fairly decent size - 25 GB.

I didn’t like the spam cutter in Mail, so I redirect all letters from these Emails to my main mailbox in Gmail, where it already eliminates the shortcomings of this mail service with its spam cutter. In fact, this is pure IMHO, and it is possible that the fight against spam in Mail.ru is now at a higher level (please comment on this point if there is something to say).

  3. Rambler mail is also one of the oldest services on the Runet, which has recently undergone significant changes. True, they did not go as smoothly and successfully as in Mail.ru. Yes, the online interface turned out to be as simple and clear as possible, but the functionality could have been richer. In addition, there were many complaints about the stability of the service, and especially about ineffective spam cutting.

It also does not shine in terms of job safety. It seems that the HTTPS protocol is used (but the browser complains about the insecurity of working with this node), and everything else remains at the level of the turn of the century, when this brainchild of Rambler was born. By the way, I didn’t find any information about checking for viruses. The size of the box is also not impressive - only 2 GB. You can read more about it here:

I think that the main task of developers at the moment is not to attract new clients, but to retain existing ones, who registered their email with them a long time ago and simply do not know that there are better options somewhere (or are afraid of unknowingly losing their Email, although it is quite possible to set up redirection in the Rambler settings to an email in another service that you want to use as the main one). IMHO ().
  4. Outlook.com(formerly Hotmail) is the successor to the oldest public email service on the Internet (Hotmail). It’s not entirely clear to me why Microsoft needed to rebrand (it’s possible that Hotmail has already become associated with something of poor quality). The service’s interface is extremely simple and understandable, but the settings system seemed very clumsy to me (or simply not done in the usual way). You can figure it out, but not with half a jab.

At one time, I wrote a little about this email service, along with a description of the work of the Bing search engine (the brainchild of the same Microsoft):

In general, MelkoMiagkih has some kind of aggravation with the renaming of services. Relatively recently I wrote an article about. Apparently there is too much money and they spend it on promoting new brands. I can't keep up with them. Now the article about cloud storage will have to be edited.

About Outlook.com. In terms of security, they are doing quite well (even if they had such a bad budget). By default, a newly registered mailbox is given 5 GB, which will then be increased as needed. And in OneDrive (this is their version of cloud storage, not bad, by the way, although they change names all the time), they give another 15 GB free to ordinary users, and as much as 25 GB to Windows license holders. I can’t say anything about spam cutting and virus checking, but everything should be up to standard, because the owners are very rich bourgeois.

  5. Yahoo Mail- another bourgeois service of a very respectable age. Their offer is the most generous - 1 TB of free space. Access is carried out via the HTTPS protocol, but it’s difficult to judge security, because I’m not very familiar with this email system yet (I’m thinking of writing a separate note about it).

The interface looks quite nice (you can change the theme). As far as I understand, if you do not use the mailbox for a long time (more than six months), your account in this system is automatically deleted. In general, the dimensions of the box change, but read this in the above publication.

  6. - for those who are very concerned about the security of their correspondence. Here letters are sent in secure envelopes (encrypted) and only those who have the password can read them. The service in the database is free, but if you need more space for mail, you will have to pay extra.
  7. — there are quite a few online services that provide disposable and anonymous mailboxes that can be used without registration. They are great for registering somewhere where you don't want to use your main email.

Good luck to you! See you soon on the pages of the blog site
