Which power supply for gtx 1070. Choosing a power supply for a computer

Switching power supplies are used for computers. Unlike transformer ones, they are smaller in size, but due to the complexity of the circuit, they are more susceptible to breakdowns. Therefore, choosing a power supply is an important stage in PC assembly.

Power supply power

How much power does a computer need for a power supply? PSU manufacturers indicate an effective operating range of 50 - 80% of that indicated on the label. This means that this criterion cannot be discounted. There are many online calculators on the Internet. Let's pay attention to the website of the well-known company be quiet! (https://www.bequiet.com/ru/psucalculator). Here you enter the model of the central processor and video card, the number of S-ATA, P-ATA devices and RAM sticks, as well as the number of air fans and liquid cooling systems.

As a result, we get the maximum power consumption.

Next, we propose the selection of a specific model based on the user’s priorities: silence, efficiency, price. In our example, the optimal solution would be a 500 Watt power supply for a computer, the maximum load of which will be at 63%.

Don't feel like fiddling with a calculator? Let's give some general advice here:

  • Often, the specifications for video cards indicate inflated conditions for the power of the entire system. Let's learn to calculate it ourselves.
  • Suppose the choice fell on the Geforce GTX 1060 video card. According to tests, this configuration with an Intel central processor consumes about 280 Watts. Therefore, we recommend a 400 Watt power supply. For AM3+ CPU we recommend 500 watt models.
  • The AMD RX 480 video adapter requires more Watts (maximum 345 W), and a PC with a GeForce GTX 1070 is loaded up to 330 W, but 400-Watts is enough in both cases.
  • If a Geforce GTX 1080 is responsible for graphics, then we find a 500-watt power supply.
  • For an overclocked GeForce GTX 1080TI video card in conjunction with any CPU, a 600 Watt device is suitable.
  • More powerful power supply models are used in SLI systems (for gaming computers) and in mining. In this case, we add the power consumption of each video card according to the specification.

Selecting a power supply for a computer based on parameters

Power calculated. Let's move on to the following priority properties of power supplies:

  1. Standard size;
  2. Manufacturer;
  3. Degree of silence;
  4. Distribution of currents along lines;
  5. Availability of necessary protections;
  6. Modularity;
  7. Variety of power connectors.

Form factor

The power supply is installed in the case of a personal computer. There are two main standards depending on the sizes - ATX And SFX. The first is used in conventional system units and is more common. If you have a compact desktop system, then only Small Form Factor will do. The instructions for the PC frame indicate the type of supported power supplies.

Format ATX involves installing a cooler with a diameter of up to 14 cm in the power supply unit. Previously, the type SFX had an 80mm fan. Nowadays, a compact power supply for a computer is equipped with a 12-centimeter cooler, which has a positive effect on noise levels.

Manufacturers of power supplies for computers

Each company can release both a successful series and a lackluster one. There are power supplies from different manufacturers on the market, but the filling is from the same company.

Of the fully branded power supplies, only the company remains Super Flower, prices for which are steep. Their quality is excessive. Such power supplies are useful in hot server systems with round-the-clock load or mining.

U Seasonic Noisy specimens also began to be found with squeaking, although it occupies a proud second place.

Enermax began to outsource the production of new brands to the company TWT, which made them of lower quality.

U be quiet! the cooling systems are better, and the real manufacturer of the power supply is HEC, which does not reach the “average” market.

It's better not to buy models Chieftec, the quality factor of which has fallen recently, but the cost has remained at the same level.

BP Aerocool VX series are noisy at maximum power and mediocre in quality, and KCAS- quiet, and shortcomings can be detected immediately and returned to the store.

Firm Corsair is inconsistent - the CX series is the worst, and the RM is the best, although expensive.

XFX– decent power supplies in terms of price/quality ratio, since they are quiet and are responsible for the filling Seasonic. Such power supplies are cheaper, since they are not assembled at the main plant of the famous brand.

Efficiency

Power supplies differ in the quality of energy transfer from the outlet to the computer, that is, in the degree of loss. To formalize these parameters, an 80 PLUS certificate was issued, which is issued to a power supply with an energy efficiency of at least 80% and a power factor of at least 0.9.

This parameter directly determines how much you will spend on electricity. The noise level from the power supply will be less with a more advanced certificate, since the fan dissipates little heat. The higher the efficiency of the power supply, the more expensive it is. Therefore, we choose the “golden mean” – 80 PLUS GOLD. In this case, with a network voltage of 230 Volts, power losses at 50% load will be only 8%, while 92% will go to the needs of the PC.

Power Factor Correction

Quality power supplies always have power factor correction (PFC). This coefficient reduces the reactive power consumed by the power supply unit, which consists of inductive and capacitive components. Such power does not carry a payload, so they fight it by adding special elements to the circuit.

There are two types of PFC:

  1. Active;
  2. Passive.

APFC copes with short-term voltage dips in the electrical network (work continues due to the accumulated energy in the capacitors), so the voltage range at the input of such a power supply reaches 100-240 V. The resulting power factor rises to 0.95 at full load.

The passive PFC circuit is a high-inductance choke that smooths out low-frequency noise. But the power factor does not rise above 0.75.

Power supplies with active PFC are preferable, which improves their performance.

Noise

PSUs for computers also differ in the type of cooling:

  1. Active;
  2. Passive;
  3. Semi-passive.

The first type has become widespread. In such devices, the fan constantly rotates, removing warm air. Its speed can be controlled by the temperature inside the power supply case. The noise level depends on the size of the cooler (the larger the diameter, the lower the noise) and the type of its bearings (the quietest is hydrodynamic, the loudest is a plain bearing when worn).

A passive cooling system implies the presence of a massive radiator. The absence of a fan in the power supply does not mean complete silence during operation. Some elements of the unit's board may produce a quiet but noticeable hum. In terms of acoustic comfort, such models are often inferior to power supplies with active cooling.

The best choice for this criterion is power supplies with a semi-passive mode, especially if there is a button to control it.

The cooler turns on only when the system load is light (from 10 to 30% depending on the model). It then turns off when the temperature inside the power supply drops below a threshold value.

The advantage of semi-passive cooling is not only low noise, but also increased fan life due to reduced fan speed, as well as optimized heat dissipation at any time the power supply is running.

A high-quality power supply creates independent +3.3 V circuits; +5 V and +12 V. In budget power supplies, with a sharp increase in current consumption by the processor or video card along the +12 V circuit, drawdowns are observed on other lines. This may cause the system to freeze. Therefore, before purchasing, you need to find reviews on the Internet for the models you are interested in and give preference to a device whose voltage fluctuations do not exceed 3%.

The main load in the system unit falls on the CPU and video adapter, which receive energy via the +12 V line. Therefore, it is important that the power supply is able to deliver the maximum possible power through it, preferably close to the total. Such information is displayed on the power supply label.

Protection technologies

The next stage is that the power supply has various protections against:

  • overload (OPP);
  • overcurrent (OCP);
  • overvoltage (OVP);
  • undervoltage (UVP);
  • overheating (OTP);
  • short circuit (SCP).

Modularity

There are three types of power supply according to the method of connecting power cables:

  1. Non-modular;
  2. Fully modular;
  3. With partially detachable cables.

The first type is the cheapest. Such a power supply requires careful laying of the wires in the personal computer case so as not to interfere with the free movement of air. A system unit with good cable management will do.

The power supply is easier to install if only the necessary cables are connected to it. In this case, such stringent requirements are not imposed on the body.

Power cables for the motherboard and central processor are required regardless of the number of connected devices, so you can choose the least expensive power supplies with partially detachable connectors.

Computer power supply connectors

The power supply supplies power to the components of the personal computer through cables with connectors. For hard drives and optical drives, SATA and outdated Molex types are used. But the second option is used to operate case fans if their rotation speed is not regulated. Solid-state drives are powered either via SATA or directly via the PCI and M.2 interfaces of the motherboard. A floppy drive requires a Floppy connector.

The main power cables are supplied to the motherboard (24/20 pin) and CPU (8/4 pin). The 20-pin connector was used with early motherboards, now it is 24 pin, in which 4 pins are usually unfastened. For undemanding “stones”, 4-pin power is enough, but it is better to connect all 8 wires.

If the external video adapter does not have enough power on the PCI bus, then additional connectors with power are connected. Computer power supply connectors for a video card can be 6 or 8-pin, and for powerful devices - two 8-wire connectors.

The length of the supplied cables is also important. Before purchasing, go to the website of the power supply manufacturer and study the parameters of interest.

Without competent research into the market of PC power supplies, it is impossible to build an effective and stable system. The durability of the components directly depends on the properties of the power supply. Which power supply is best for a computer? An ideal purchase is considered to be a device from a well-known brand that operates at 50–80% of its capabilities (affects the strength of its elements and the degree of noise) with all existing protections.

And you guys know what that means. As soon as the article about the second card was completed, testing of the SLI mode immediately began. Nowadays it is very difficult to find two identical cards, so different ones were used. It’s interesting what advantages using two cards will bring, especially interesting is the comparison of two GTX 1070 with one GTX 1080. The cards were tested using our established methods. This review contains more numbers than words; I am sure that this presentation is simpler and clearer.

Tests:

As already noted, we will not go into details when testing SLI. I had to skip some tests because they didn't support SLI. Typically, in such cases, tests with SLI turned out worse than with a single card.

With the release of the first Maxwell, the appetites of NVIDIA video cards were curbed; this trend was continued by the Pascal architecture. The pioneers GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 consume 150 W at maximum load. And if you are not planning on SLI, then you can quite save on buying a power supply, and the freed up funds can be more efficiently spent on purchasing memory sticks or large-capacity SSDs. Moreover, even among low-power models there are “golden nuggets”, such as the updated AeroCool VP-450 with an 80 Plus Bronze certificate.

We have already tested the power supply from this series - AeroCool VP-650. The entire series has improved in terms of power and efficiency. All this was done while maintaining the cost, but you need to be careful: stores may still have versions of the previous generation; they do not differ in name and labeling. The main and obvious difference is the appearance of the 80 Plus Bronze mark on the box. At the time of publication, its average cost, according to the Yandex.Market service, is 2,700 rubles.

AeroCool VP-450 review

Equipment

AeroCool VP-450 is supplied in compact packaging with a dark design. The name of the VP series and power are printed on the cover. Inside it is collected in a protective bag.

The package includes a set of screws for mounting in the case and a power cord.

Appearance

The design of the block also remained unchanged. AeroCool VP-450 2016 Edition completely duplicates its predecessors. But this cannot be called a drawback; the external one was initially good, especially considering its cost.

Black steel body with powder paint. On the lid there is a fan grill in the form of a grill. Underneath is a 120 mm fan with nine blades.

On the right side there is a sticker with data along the lines. There is also a solid list of certificates.

The dimensions of the AeroCool VP-450 case are 149 x 139 x 86 mm.

On the back side there is a grille for releasing warm air, a power button and a power connector.

The length of the motherboard power cable according to the 20+4 scheme is 550 mm, the length of the processor power cable is 4+4 with a length of 500 mm.

One PCI line for a video card according to the 6+2 scheme; for some video cards this is not enough, but you can always use an adapter with MOLEX. Let me remind you that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 is connected to one line using a 6+2 scheme. Its length is 450 mm. There are five SATA and three MOLEX. They are distributed under two lines with a length of 650 and 850 mm.

The motherboard power cable is protected, the rest are open.

In general, this number of connectors is quite enough for the power of the AeroCool VP-450.

Filling

Through the 12V line, it produces a current of up to 33A with a power of 396 W. Lines for 5 and 3.3V with a current of 20A at a power of 130 W.

The printed circuit board is made by Andyson. It has an electromagnetic interference filter with two chokes, which also protect against overvoltage. Diode assembly GBU606, forward voltage converter. Separate winding for 12V and paired for 3.3 and 5V.

JunFu capacitors are soldered to SMD capacitors with a total capacity of 4000 µF.

Quality is the main characteristic of any power supply. In the dashing 90s, a good provider of all components was judged by its weight, but the cunning Chinese quickly learned to weigh down the body using bolts mounted on adhesive tape. Nowadays no one is doing such “life hacks”, and there is no need for it. For a long time now, the weight of the power supply does not mean anything. In 2016, it is very difficult to determine the build quality by external signs. " Metal box». « With fan». « With a bunch of braided wires». « Oh, and this is where the cables come off!» In fact, only the manufacturer’s name, price and efficiency classification 80 PLUS speak about the reliability of the unit.

All three points, as you yourself understand, are interconnected. So, cheap devices from SeaSonic, ENERMAX and be quiet! You won't find it on sale. Yes, the computer power supply market is quite conservative. Therefore, the name plays a big role. The paradox is that there are not very many power supply manufacturers themselves, and companies producing ready-made solutions under their own logo are a dime a dozen. Here everything depends on the office itself, namely on how closely it monitors the production process. Therefore, sometimes sad situations happen when at first the quality of a particular model remains at a consistently high level. And she gains well-deserved popularity. But after a year or two, under the same name, they release a block on a different platform with a modified “filling” of worse quality. Below is a table of reliable manufacturers; it includes those who are more or less represented in Russian retail. Selling expensive blocks costing 10-30,000 rubles in times of crisis is difficult. Therefore, retail is predominantly filled with simpler solutions. The same ENERMAX in Russia is almost “over”. But, as Ostap Bender said, abroad will help us!

Hey yu, tech geek here, many people think that a good gaming PC cannot cost less than 100 thousand. Today we will prove that this is not so.

Our assembly will need to include a video card, processor, motherboard, RAM, hdd and ssd drives, gaming case, radiator, coolers and power supply.
What could be simpler? Well, okay, let's move from words to action. We will purchase all hardware in megabits, since there is a large assortment and reasonable prices. Let's start with the processor and video card. One of the best combinations for gaming is i5-8400 and gtx1070ti. This combination of processor and video card is the most optimal and can provide a stable frame rate on the ultra preset in any game.

We go to the megabit website and look for this video card. There are many different variations of the 1070ti card, the only difference between them is the power subsystem and cooling. The better these indicators, the better the video card overclocks. Msai is a good brand, with a fairly well-thought-out architecture for constructing and cooling video card power systems. In addition, this is the cheapest video card at the moment. We'll definitely take it. The I5-8400 is a six-core processor operating at a frequency of up to 3.8 GHz on all cores in turbo boost. 12 threads combined with a high clock speed and a not particularly high price tag make it the best in terms of price/quality ratio.

Now you need to select a motherboard on the 1151v2 socket. Everything here is quite simple, since we do not plan to overclock the processor, any cheap motherboard that has a heatsink on the power subsystem will suit us. The cheapest motherboards are microATX form factor boards; they differ from standard ones only in that they have smaller dimensions and fewer expansion slots. We are completely satisfied with this, since it does not affect performance. An excellent option would be the ASRock B360M Pro4 motherboard.

Next, we need to select memory components for our computer. Since the motherboard supports RAM with a frequency of no higher than 2666 MHz, the best solution in terms of price/quality ratio would be to choose memory from Samsung. At the moment, 8 GB of RAM fully satisfies the requirements of any games; there is simply no point in overpaying for a larger amount. However, we recommend taking RAM with two dies, as this will allow it to work in dual-channel mode. Therefore, we take two RAM sticks from Samsung with a capacity of 4 GB each. With hard drives everything is also quite simple. For file storage, we will use a 1 TB hdd drive from Western Digital, wd blue series. The sdd drive on which the games and the system will be located will be a 120GB solid state drive from Kingston.

As a gaming case there will be an inexpensive, but still very unusual case from the AeroCool company. It supports mounting microATX motherboards and allows you to install a video card up to 375 centimeters long inside. This suits us completely. This case can accommodate a CPU cooler up to 153mm in height, which is fine with us since the i5-8400 only has a TDP of 65W, meaning even a small heatsink can do a good job of cooling the CPU. An excellent solution for this build would be a cooler from deepcool. 3 copper radiator tubes are capable of dissipating up to 125 watts of heat, which is almost twice the maximum heat output of the processor. This case allows you to accommodate 3 120mm fans, one of which is preinstalled in the kit. We will buy 2 more to ensure good air circulation. The best solution, in our opinion, would be arctic cooling bionix f120 coolers.

Now all that remains is to choose a power supply with sufficient power. We go to the Cooler Master website and calculate the energy consumption of our assembly. I won’t go into details, since I dedicated a separate video to calculating power and selecting power supplies. I will leave a link to it in the description of the video. The approximate power consumption of the system is 400 watts, which means that a 500 watt bronze power supply is enough for us. In terms of price/quality ratio, the best model was the power supply from Chieftech.
As a result, we were able to assemble all the components of a gaming PC without going beyond the set budget. The performance of this PC is enough for any games in any graphics preset.
