What screen sizes are there for tablets? Comparison with Galaxy S8 Plus and iPhone X

In 2017 Apple company updated its line flagship smartphones, but we still haven’t seen any drastic changes in the design. New iPhones 8 and 8 Plus are almost exact copies of their predecessors, the iPhone 7 and 8 Plus, but there are some minor innovations. This still affected their specifications.

Now we will take a closer look at the sizes of both new products and compare them with last year’s models. We won't stop there, and compare the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus with their competitors from others large manufacturers smartphones.

iPhone 8 Dimensions

Like its predecessor, the iPhone 8 has a 4.7-inch screen, and it is almost impossible to distinguish them by the front panel. The height of the updated model is 13.4 cm, width 6.7, and thickness 0.73 cm. For comparison, the 2017 iteration is 0.02 cm thicker due to the use of impact-resistant glass on the front and back of the case. For the same reason, it became heavier by as much as 10 grams.

The iPhone 8 has also become a little taller and wider, but this does not prevent the use of cases and other accessories from its predecessor. Keep in mind that if your 7 case has an apple cutout, it will not fit, as the engineers have slightly changed the position of the logo on the back.

iPhone 8 Plus Dimensions

The iPhone 8 Plus is a real giant compared to modern competitor smartphones, despite the fact that its screen diagonal is far from record-breaking. It is equipped with a 5.5-inch display panel, like its predecessor. The design of the Plus has undergone similar changes as the regular model.

The 8 Plus is 15.8cm high, 7.8cm wide and 0.75mm thick. Consequently, it is slightly taller and thicker, but slightly narrower than its predecessor. Accessories, of course, fit without problems, with the exception of cases that have a cutout for the company logo on the back of the case.

In terms of weight, the new product is inferior to the 2016 iterations of phablets. It weighs 202 grams, while the iPhone 7 Plus weighs 188 grams.

Size comparison between iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

Based on our calculations, the iPhone 8's screen-to-body ratio is approximately 65.4 percent, while the iPhone 8 Plus's is 67.4 percent. This means that a phablet with a 5.5-inch screen makes better use of the front panel. Obviously, it has thinner bezels, but in reality the difference is almost unnoticeable.

Compared to last year's generation of flagships, essentially nothing has changed. Plus users will still not be as comfortable interacting with the screen as on the regular model. However, reach top line applications on the screen will be very difficult without using one-handed mode.

Comparison with Galaxy S8 Plus and iPhone X

The new iPhone 8 Plus is noticeably taller than the iPhone X, but lower than the Galaxy S8+, although the latter is significantly smaller in width than Apple's 5.5-inch phablet. Weighing in at 202 grams, the 8 Plus is the heaviest smartphone of the three. The Samsung device weighs 173 grams, and the iPhone 10 is only 1 gram heavier.

Please note that the phablet from the Korean manufacturer has the largest screen of all the devices presented here. Its diagonal is 6.2 inches. It is also worth noting that the display in the iPhone 10 has a diagonal of 5.8 inches. The difference is, of course, significant.

An equally important aspect is the screen-to-body ratio. The undisputed leader in this area is the Galaxy, boasting 83.7 percent, while the tenth iPhone has 80.93 percent.

7 inch 8 inch 9.7 inch and 10.1 inch tablet. What gadget size is best to choose?

Before buying a tablet, decide what you need it for and what you will do with it. Depending on this, you will need to choose a size, and only then choose a specific model.

This is good for lovers of Apple products, their choice is limited and they don’t have to think long, only 8-inch and 9.7-inch tablets. If you are not tied to this brand and can choose from the rest of the range of products, then the choice is simply huge.

The diagonal length is 18 centimeters, the optimal aspect ratio is 16:10. This is the most compact and lightweight tablet of all the presented models. It is convenient to play on such a screen, thanks to the fact that your fingers can reach the entire screen. The fact that it is light allows you to “steer” the car for a long time, or shoot birds.

Well suited for children due to its weight and small size. This tablet is convenient to take on the road. But if you are going, for example, to edit text on a tablet, then this size will not suit you. At seven inch model the keyboard will take up almost half the screen, everything will be very small and it will be difficult for your finger to enter desired position. We can say that a 7-inch tablet is suitable for entertainment and reading, but not for office applications.

Eight inches

If you need mobility, but don’t like elongated screens, then an eight-inch tablet with an aspect ratio of 3:4 and a diagonal length of 20 centimeters is suitable. It looks more like a real book, so reading on it will be much more convenient. Also, more elements fit on the screen, so editing documents on it is more convenient than on a seven-inch one.

If you are planning to watch a movie, then it is worth considering that there will be a black stripe at the top and bottom, or you can stretch the film, then the picture will not fit a little.

In general, the same as the seven-inch one, only the aspect ratio is different.

9.7 inch tablet

24.5 centimeters diagonal length and quite heavy in weight. Thanks to the iPod, this is the most common screen size - 9.7 inches. ratio 4:3.

A universal tablet, you can do everything on it, even work with office applications, but unfortunately it’s heavy. In short, no mobile version. It's also not very comfortable to play on. If you can hold the tablet with one hand while playing birdies, this is still normal, but if you need to steer or shoot, your hands get tired very quickly. Therefore, a tablet of this size can hardly be called a gaming tablet; rather, it is suitable for office work and surfing the Internet.

Well, since this is the most common format, if you don’t know what to choose, then choose this model. But remember, you won’t go fishing with it and don’t just put it in your pocket.

The largest tablet with a diagonal of 10 inches or 25.5 centimeters

This model is for those who need a large tablet, but don't like the 3:4 ratio.

It is convenient to watch movies on it. With this format, the picture will occupy the entire screen and there will be no black bars. You can also work with office applications, but only in vertical orientation, otherwise virtual keyboard will again take up half the screen.

Children should definitely not buy such a tablet. Too much big size for a tiny person. And if you accidentally fall on your leg, it may not be a fracture, but a bruise is definitely guaranteed.

Have you decided to buy a tablet? First, decide on the size, and only then study the number of cores, RAM size, processor and screen.

Many of us easily divide tablets into large and small, but not everything is so simple: in the diagonal of the device, every centimeter matters. Why do we need tablets of different sizes?

Screen 7 inches

In the usual measurement it is about 18 cm. Aspect ratio: 10 to 16.

The miniature tablet is convenient to carry with you everywhere: it fits in your pocket and handbag. As a rule, such tablets are also lightweight. They are convenient for fans of "Angry birds" and others to play on. entertainment applications, where you need to reach all points of the screen with your fingers.

Film buffs will also like the seven-inch. You can watch a movie with her anytime, anywhere. Of course, the screen of a baby tablet is not as large as we would like, but it can give you the maximum. This aspect ratio: 10 to 16 allows you to stretch the image to fill the entire screen.

However, it is inconvenient to work with text on such a tablet. If you open the on-screen keyboard while the tablet is in horizontal position, then it will close and read the entire screen. And if you turn the device vertically, you will have to type with only one hand.

Screen 8 inches

Diagonal – almost 20 cm. Aspect ratio: 3 to 4.

This screen is less elongated. On the one hand, this is good: it’s more convenient to work in browsers and text documents. On the other hand, when you watch a movie, there are black bars at the top and bottom. And if you stretch the frame in height, stripes will appear on the sides.

Playing on it is just as convenient as on the “seven”: holding the device in your hands, you can reach any part of the screen with your thumbs. With an 8-inch, you can enjoy racing: the tablet weighs little, and your hands don’t get tired of turning the virtual steering wheel in different directions.

Screen 9.7 inches

Diagonal – about 25 cm. Aspect ratio – 3 to 4 (same as on 8-inch).

This screen opens up great possibilities. For those who work in graphic editors, it is better to choose it. The smallest objects are clearly visible on the display.

If you often type text, 9.7 inches is for you: you can comfortably position both hands on the on-screen keyboard. And in general, on large tablets It’s much more comfortable to work in office documents.

But for fans of racing and shooting games, holding the tablet is not very convenient. Large devices weigh at least 600 grams, and your hands get tired quickly. If you turn on a cartoon or game for a child, it is better to place the tablet on the table so that the little one does not get tired. And at the same time, drawing, coloring, and playing educational games on such a tablet is more convenient: the large screen makes it easier for the baby to navigate. The main thing is to sit your child down at his desk before turning on the game.

Screen 10,1 inches

Diagonal 25 cm. Aspect ratio: 16 to 10 (like a 7-inch).

This is the perfect size for movie lovers. The screen is large enough to enjoy the picture. And the frames, thanks to the given aspect ratio, are stretched across the entire display.

Typing text when the tablet is positioned horizontally is uncomfortable: screen keyboard extends out and takes up most of the page. Therefore, you will have to hold it vertically.

So, different tablet sizes open up different possibilities for us.

  • If you need a lightweight tablet that you can take with you everywhere, take it 7 inch. Especially if you watch movies often.
  • If you need a mini-tablet on which you will have to type text and spend a lot of time on the Internet, this is your option. 8 inch.
  • Tablet for working in graphic editors, text files and various office applications- this device with a diagonal of 9.7.
  • For those who want to get the most out of watching a movie and enjoy a large picture, we recommend taking a closer look at devices with a screen 10.1 inches.

Typography is the study of the reproduction of text on a page and the use of size, typeface, color and other visual features to make text easier to read and look beautiful. Typography emerged in the mid-15th century with the advent of printing presses. The placement of text on a page affects our perception - the better it is placed, the more likely it is that the reader will understand and remember what is written in the text. Poor-quality typography, on the contrary, makes the text difficult to read.

Headsets are divided into different types, for example, fonts with and without serifs. Serifs are a decorative element of a font, but in some cases they make the text easier to read, although sometimes the opposite happens. First letter ( blue color) in the image is in Bodoni serif font. One of the four serifs is outlined in red. The second letter (yellow) is in Futura sans serif font.

There are many classifications of fonts, for example, according to the time of their creation, or the style popular in certain time.

k, there are fonts old style- a group that includes the oldest fonts; newer fonts transitional style; modern fonts, created after the transitional fonts and before the 1820s; and finally new style fonts or modernized old fonts, that is, fonts made according to the old model at a later time. This classification is mainly used for serif fonts. There are other classifications based on appearance fonts, such as the thickness of the lines, the contrast between thin and thick lines, and the shape of the serifs. The domestic press has its own classifications. For example, the classification according to GOST groups fonts according to the presence and absence of serifs, thickening in serifs, smooth transition from the main line to the serif, the serif fillet, and so on. In classifications of Russian, as well as other Cyrillic fonts, there is often a category for Old Church Slavonic fonts.

The main task of typography is to adjust the size of letters and choose appropriate fonts to place text on the page so that it is easy to read and looks beautiful. There are a number of systems for determining font size. In some cases, the same size of letters in typographic units, if they are printed in different typefaces, does not mean the same size of the letters themselves in centimeters or inches. This situation is described in more detail below. Despite the inconvenience caused by this, used on this moment font size helps designers arrange text neatly and beautifully on a page. This is especially important in layout.

In layout, you need to know not only the text size, but also the height and width digital images to place them on the page. Size can be expressed in centimeters or inches, but there is also a unit specifically designed to measure the size of images - pixels. A pixel is an element of an image in the form of a point (or square) of which it is composed.

Definition of units

The size of letters in typography is indicated by the word “size”. There are several systems for measuring point size, but most are based on the unit "soldering" in the American and English measurement systems (English pica), or “cicero” in the European measurement system. The name "soldering" is sometimes written as "spike". There are several types of soldering, which differ slightly in size, so when using soldering, it is worth remembering which soldering you mean. Initially, cicero was used in domestic printing, but now soldering is also common. Cicero and computer soldering are similar in size, but not equal. Sometimes cicero or soldering is directly used for measurement, for example to determine the size of margins or columns. More often, especially for text measurement, soldered-derived units such as printing points are used. The soldering size is determined in different systems in different ways, as described below.

Letters are measured as shown in the illustration:

  1. line of upper extensions: line marking top part the tallest letter, including ascenders (for example, the top tail of the letter “b”);
  2. Baseline of lowercase characters: the top of the main part of the letter, without a leader that continues to the line of the top leaders;
  3. font line or baseline: the bottom of the main part of the letter, without a descender, which continues to the line of the lower descenders;
  4. line of lower extensions: the lowest part of the longest (down) letter, including the descender (for example, the bottom tail of the letter "y");
  5. sign height: the height of the letter without taking into account the callout elements. In the American typographical system, this height is equated to the height English letter x;
  6. height of the lettering area: historically - the size of the lead letter pad that was used to print this letter.

Most often, the font size is determined in printing points. For example, most scientific articles, as well as letters and documents in business correspondence, made in size from 10 to 12 points. One point is equal to 1/12 of a ration, or 1/12 of a cicero, depending on the number system. The size of the letter is in points, and the corresponding size in millimeters or inches corresponds to the height of the letter pad (number 6 in the illustration above). Previously, when typing was done by hand, lead type was used for each letter, similar to modern seals. Imagine a stamp with a single letter, such as M, as in the image. The point size is the height of this stamp. In web design, especially in CSS and LaTeX, sometimes they use not the height of the type area, but the height of the character.

To measure the size of digital images use pixels described below.

Different ways to calculate typographic unit values

In different systems of typographical units, soldering, and, accordingly, points, are defined differently. This happened because printing technology developed differently in each country. Typographical units are based on local units of length, and since they are different (even several inches were used until recently), the size of the solder is not the same and does not completely correspond to the size of the cicero, although it is very close to it. Today, computer soldering is the most widely used technology in many countries. This value was introduced specifically to provide a uniform standard for typographical units.

Computer soldering

Computer soldering is equal to 1/6 inch or 4.23 millimeters. A computer printing point is correspondingly equal to 1/72 of an inch or 0.35 of a millimeter. They are widely used in PostScript format and for measuring text displayed on the screen computer monitor. This value is also often used in printing on printers at home.

Sometimes in web design they use points, the value of which is based on the size of the computer soldering described above. Sometimes point and solder sizes are determined relative to the pixel size set for a particular website. Such pixels are called relative.

Relative pixels

The standard pixel size is replaced by relative pixels in the event that the page is intended to be viewed on devices with a non-standard screen size, or for those devices that are viewed from a non-standard distance. For example, the screen size of many smartphones is designed to be viewed from a distance of approximately 25 centimeters (10 inches), but if new phone with a standard size screen but intended to be viewed from half the distance (13 centimeters or 5 inches), then the relative pixel must also be half the size. Otherwise, the image will be unclear and the user will be able to see the dots that make up the drawing.

Vision angle

Screen manufacturers have noticed the relationship between screen size, distance between screen and eye, pixel size, and relative size points. The concepts of “angle of view” and “pixels per degree” help to clearly understand this relationship.

Magnitude pixels per degree- the total number of pixels on the screen per degree of visual angle relative to the distance from the eye to the screen. In the picture, the yellow angle D is equal to one degree (in fact, it is more than one degree, since otherwise it would be difficult to see what is shown in the picture).

ks per degree - the number of points on the red segment E or on the red segment F. In our case, points per degree are equal to 3 points, as can be seen in the image (here there are 2 gray and one dark gray dot on each of the screens). Display manufacturers determine the number of dots per degree so that the dots are small enough to blend into one pattern. Typically this value is much higher than in our illustration. For example, Apple claims that they use at least 53.53 points per degree, and sometimes up to 79.

Knowing the number of dots per degree, you can easily calculate the size of one dot using the distance from the eye to the screen and vision angle in degrees. In our example, the distance to the first screen is 10 inches, and to the second - 20. The first distance is the average distance from the eyes to the smartphone screen, and the second is the distance to the computer monitor screen. The viewing angle is the angle for which the length of the segment it covers on the screen is equal to one pixel (this distance in the illustration is the green segments B and C). The viewing angle in the illustration is indicated in orange. Using the concepts of visual angle and points per degree, pixel size can be calculated for both conventional and non-standard displays.

You can learn more about how to use these concepts in practice on the W3C website.

Other units

Although computer soldering is gradually replacing other units, and perhaps replacing the more familiar ciceros, other units are also used along with it. One of these units is American soldering It is equal to 0.166 inches or 2.9 millimeters. There is also printing soldering. It is equal to the American one.

Some domestic printing houses and in the literature about printing still use pica- a unit that was widely used in Europe (with the exception of England) before the advent of computer soldering. One cicero is equal to 1/6 of a French inch. The French inch is slightly different from the modern inch. In modern units, one cicero is equal to 4.512 millimeters or 0.177 inches. This value is almost equal to computer soldering. One cicero is 1.06 computer solders.

Round embed (em) and semi-circular embed (en)

The units described above determine the height of letters, but there are also units that indicate the width of letters and symbols. Round and semicircular spacing are just such units. The first is also known as em, or em, from the English word for the letter M. Its width has historically been equal to that of the English letter. Likewise, a semi-circular empat equal to half a round one is known as en. Now these quantities are not defined using the letter M, since this letter may have different size for different fonts, even if the size is the same.

In Russian, the en dash and em dash are used. To indicate ranges and intervals (for example, in the phrase: “take 3-4 tablespoons of sugar”), an en dash is used, also called an en dash. Em dash used in Russian in all other cases (for example, in the phrase: “the summer was short, and the winter was long”). It is also called em dash.

Problems with modern unit systems

Many designers do not like the current system of typographical units based on rations or ciceros and typographical points. the main problem is that these units are not tied to the metric or imperial system of measures, and at the same time they have to be used in conjunction with centimeters or inches, in which the size of illustrations is measured.

In addition, letters made in two different typefaces can be very different in size, even if they are the same size at the typographic points. This is because letter height is measured as the height of the type pad, which is not directly related to the height of the character. This makes it difficult for designers, especially if they are working with multiple fonts in the same document. The illustration shows an example of this problem. The size of all three fonts in typographical points is the same, but the height of the sign is different everywhere. To solve this problem, some designers suggest measuring the point as the height of the character.

This question is asked by everyone who decided to purchase one for themselves for the first time, but is worried that its size may not suit them in the future. In this article I want to consider such important questions How " optimal size tablet”, for convenience, we will translate their screen sizes in centimeters, and also compare them.

Tablet screen sizes

It so happened historically that it is customary to call a tablet a device starting with the size 7 inches(17.78 cm diagonally) of the visible part of the screen in 16:9 format. This is by far the most small size and from the common ones. True, in Chinese stores you can even find 4-inch tablets, but I think this is already a useless thing, since most smartphones even exceed it in screen size. The weight of such devices varies from 250 to 350 grams.

The next largest screen size is 8 inches(20.32 cm), but these tablets come in 4:3 format, not widescreen. Since the Chinese love to copy everything, this format was successfully licked from Apple products. They didn't really guess the exact size, because iPad mini It has a size of 7.85 inches and thin frames on the sides, and therefore this format has caught on with those who want to have a similar device, but do not have the required amount. Eight-inch versions of tablets weigh from 300 to 450 grams, and the lightest ones are those that completely copy the iPad mini.

Next come the devices 9 inches(22.8 cm), there are also tablets with a screen of 8.9 (22.6 cm). As always, Chinese engineers can fit anything and anywhere, the smaller size was mostly used in the first netbooks. The weight of 9-inch tablets ranges from 450 to 500 grams, depending on the design and filling.

Tablets with screen in 10.1 inch(25.6 cm) are quite bulky in appearance and begin to noticeably add weight. Such devices have a huge battery and a long charging time, since big screen very gluttonous.

The largest tablet size that I was able to find in the online store has 11.6 inches(29.4 cm) and most likely its screen was intended for a netbook. The weight of such a monster is 700 grams or more and has a 12,000 milliampere/hour battery.

Which tablet is the most convenient?

First of all, you need to decide for what purposes and under what conditions it will be used. If you active person and are constantly on the move, then the optimal size for you will be a 7-inch tablet, since it was originally designed with a focus on a large pocket of a jacket, jeans, and so on. It is lightweight, the widescreen screen allows you to watch movies almost without frames, and fits well in your hands.

Large 8-inch devices can no longer be put in your pocket, but they are ideal for reading books and surfing websites, since the screen format holds a lot of information. They are not heavy, but watching movies on them will be accompanied by large frames, since films are mostly shown in 16:9 and not in 4:3 as before.

I would classify the rest of the tablets as household and non-transportable, unless of course you constantly carry a backpack with you or, if you are a lady, a purse. They are big, voracious, and I can’t imagine how you can go anywhere outside the house with them. It seems to me that in order to read your favorite website or play birds with a tablet larger than 8 inches, public place it will be inconvenient.

My conclusion: the ideal tablet size is 7 inches if you need mobility.

If you spend more time reading and surfing the web, then go for 8 inches or, more accurately, 7.85, with thin side frames.

Tablets larger than 9 inches in size, in my opinion, are intended for home use.
