How to call Thailand on a mobile phone. How to check your account

While vacationing in Thailand, you need to at least occasionally call your relatives and friends back home, they still worry about you. But how can you do this inexpensively, being in a foreign country and not knowing the local language? It’s actually very simple - buy a local SIM card and call your home country at a price of 4 baht per minute of conversation or for free. This article is devoted to exactly how to do this, and I tried to talk about all the main nuances of conversations with the homeland.

If you call from a SIM card that was issued in your home country, then a minute of conversation will cost you about 80-120 rubles, which is why it is advisable to issue a SIM card in Thailand and save a decent amount on this, also with local SIM card The Internet will always be at hand.

You can talk to your homeland for free (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus - who knows which one;)), if you use the program and call from a computer/tablet/phone to another computer/tablet/phone, but this requires Internet access. Personally, in 90% of cases I call via Skype - it’s convenient and cheap, so I pay a lot of attention quick access in Internet.

Best mobile operator in Thailand

Thailand has several large mobile operators— Dtac (another name is Happy), True Move, AIS. The best of them is Dtac for several reasons:

  • The best network coverage in Thailand
  • Better Internet access, 3G ( fast internet) catches almost everywhere (except for mountainous areas and remote islands)
  • Clear conditions for foreigners
  • Cheap tariff plans (cheap calls, cheap internet– when compared with other mobile operators)
  • You can buy and top up a SIM card in almost every locality
  • There is support in Russian (there is also information about tariff plans in Russian)

Where to buy a Dtac SIM card

There are two ways to buy a Dtac SIM card:

  1. Order online and the SIM card will be sent from Thailand to your home, although you will have to pay for delivery (for more details, see the link above)
  2. Buy a SIM card in Thailand at big store or airport

I always bought SIM cards only upon arrival in Thailand. They are sold in almost every major store. To be precise, 7-eleven and Family Mart stores always have them (this is large networks shops that are in every city in Thailand). You can also buy a SIM card directly at the airport.

To buy a SIM card in a store, you can simply go up to the cashier and say “Dtac sim card”, he will understand everything without unnecessary words. You can also take out your SIM card, point it to the cashier and wave some banknote, in this case he will also understand what you want from him. There is no need to fill out any applications, nor do you need to sign anything.

Eat different types SIM cards, mainly differing in the amount of included Internet traffic. A standard Dtac SIM card costs 49 baht, called “Happy Tourist SIM 49”, and 15 baht will already be in your account. There is also a Happy Tourist SIM 299 SIM card, which costs 299 baht, and the account will have 100 baht + seven days included in the price unlimited access in Internet.

SIM cards for sale different sizes: regular, micro (for most modern devices on Android), Nano (for iPhone). If you need Micro SIM, then you can take a regular-sized SIM card, and squeeze Micro out of it (this can also be done with most SIM cards in Russia). If you need a SIM card for iPhone, then the seller needs to say “Dtac nano sim card” or “Dtac iPhone sim card" (in most cases, Thais understand the latter expression better).

Calls to local (Thai) numbers

If you need to call Thai numbers in Thailand, then know that it will cost about 2 baht per minute (this is quite cheap for this part of Asia, their cellular communications are generally more expensive). Dtac does not have roaming, i.e. You will be able to call any part of Thailand at the same price. When might you need to call Thai numbers? Yes, at least in the case when you go on vacation with your family or friends, and someone wants to go for a walk separately from the general company, but you need to keep in touch, call where the person is, where to meet, etc. Also, independent travelers make a lot of calls to their Thai friends, because if you are truly an independent traveler, then you have a lot of friends in different countries peace.

How to call Russia from Thailand cheaply

If you buy a SIM card in Thailand and immediately call Russia in the “normal” way (dial the number in the format +7хххххххххх, so that the number starts with +7, not 8), then a minute of conversation will cost 30 baht, which is all equally very cheap, in comparison, if you call from a Russian SIM card in Thailand (a minute of conversation will cost 80-120 rubles).

But there is another way that will save a lot of money. This method is to use IP telephony. The call quality will be slightly worse (just a little), but the cost of a minute of conversation drops to 4.5 baht per minute. In order to use IP telephony, you need to dial the phone number in a special way, using 004 instead of the “+” sign, i.e. if you want to call Russian number+79509999999, then you need to dial the number in this format 00479509999999.

As was said at the beginning of the article, you can call Russia for free via Skype, you just need Internet access. If you do not know how to use this program, then comprehensive information is presented on the official Skype website.

How to call a Thai number from Russia

In order to be able to get through to a Thai number from Russia, you need to explain to the person calling that the Thai number from another country must be dialed in international format via “+66”. The Thai number looks like this 0ххххххххх, and for an international conversation you need to dial it in this form +66ххххххххх (replacing 0 with “+66”).

Mobile Internet

All mobile Internet packages in Thailand have a limit, although they are called unlimited (the situation is exactly the same in Russia). Once the limit is reached (after the traffic quota is used up), the speed drops sharply to 128 kbps or 384 kbps (depending on tariff plan). Mobile Internet speed in Thailand can reach 42 Mbit/s (when the limit has not yet been reached).

To connect required package, you need to dial a specific activation code. The codes are presented below.

**After exceeding the traffic quota, the speed will decrease to 128 Kbps
*After exceeding the traffic quota, the speed will decrease to 384 Kbps

You can always find out the current rates by going to.

After connecting the required service, some phones need to be turned off and on again for the Internet settings to be activated (for example, this often needs to be done on the iPhone).

Basic codes and telephone numbers

*102*9# - find out your phone number
*101*9# - find out your balance
*101*1*9# - find out the remaining traffic in the Internet package
*113*30# - extension of validity for 30 days, costs 2 baht

Police 191
Ambulance 1554
Firefighters 199
Tourist police 1155 (if something happens, call this number)

How to top up your balance

There are three main ways to top up your SIM card balance:

  1. Go to a large supermarket and top up your balance at the checkout, but to do this you need to know the number
  2. Buy payment cards. Cards are available in denominations of 100/200/500 baht and are sold mainly in large chain stores such as 7-eleven and Family Mart. You need to go to the cashier and say “money card Dtac 100/200/500 bath” (the numbers are the denomination of the card). To activate the card you need to erase protective layer from the card itself (an activation code will appear) and send it via SMS to number 100. Full request will look like this: *100*code1 code2#. Instructions are on the card itself. Money is credited to your account immediately.
  3. Top up your balance online at .

It is important to consider that SIM cards in Thailand have certain period actions after which the SIM card is blocked. It is extended as follows: topping up your account with 10 baht automatically extends the validity of the SIM card by 1 day. You can also extend the validity period to 30/90/180 days for 2/6/12 baht using special teams(listed below).

I will add that in addition to the listed IP telephony codes, there are 2 more that are not tied to any mobile operator and you can call Russia through them from any mobile phone in Thailand.

These codes are 007 and 008. It’s probably worth remembering code 008, since calling through 007 is expensive.

Remember!

How to call from Thailand to Russia for free?

You can call not only to Russia from Thailand, but all over the world for free if you have the Internet at hand.

As a rule, every hotel has free Internet, at least in the lobby.
If your phone or tablet does not connect to the Internet automatically, ask the reception for the Wi-Fi password.

If your hotel does not have Internet or the connection is expensive, and you do not plan to buy a Thai SIM card, find free Internet nearby.

It is always available in everyone - coffee shops, McDonald's, decent cafes and shopping centers.

If you need to always be in touch and don’t want to spend a lot on negotiations, buy an Internet package for a Thai SIM card.
Typically, travel options already include internet for 7 or 14 days.
If you are coming for a longer period, then it is better to read more carefully on this topic and subscribe to the package that suits you.

The cost of a normal, high-spirited unlimited mobile internet in Thailand - 300 baht. That is 10$.
With this Internet, I can chat on WhatsApp and watch movies online all month long.

How to top up your Thai SIM card balance

It's very easy to do. In Thailand, there are 7/11 and Family Mart convenience stores at every turn.

Go to one of them and tell the amount and your SIM operator.
For example: 100 baht, Dtac Online.

The main thing is to say “online”. Then the seller will let you enter your number and the money will be credited instantly.

If you forgot a word online, with a 100% probability, you will be given a card for the amount that you need to enter yourself, and since everything is in Thai, it may not be easy to do this the first time.

Where to buy a Thai SIM card?

The most favorable tariff for a tourist in Thailand is Dtac Happy Tourist sim. Sometimes they are given out right at the airport for free.
If not, then at the exit from the terminal there are points of cellular operators, so you can buy a Thai SIM card right at the airport.
If for some reason this was not possible, Thai SIM cards are sold on the 7/11 network and from operators cellular communications in shopping centers.

Now they have stopped selling Thai SIM cards without a passport, so a document is required.

I recommend immediately taking a package with the Internet and the DTAC-Happy operator.
It has high coverage throughout Thailand and the card does not need to be activated, it will start working as soon as you insert it into your phone or tablet.

The cost of a minute of mobile phone conversation in Thailand is 1 baht. SMS is also 1 baht.
Calls to Russia from 4 baht per minute, via code 004(7)

Surprisingly, Thai SIM cards work even in neighboring countries without roaming. For example, I had Dtac fishing on the banks of the Mekong in Laos and no additional fees were charged.

Which Thai SIM card is better?

Three are available for tourists type sim-cards: True Move, DTAC (Happy) and AIS (1,2-Call).

A SIM card from Dtac Happy is, in my opinion, the most profitable way to stay in touch. Calls, SMS, Internet from Dtac are cheaper than from competitors (True move and one-to-call), and the coverage is wider.

There is no roaming in Thailand, so in any province the cost of a call or SMS will be the same as in the one where it is registered.

How to keep your Thai number?

If you want your Thai card to work all year, but are not going to use it, then you need to top up your balance with such an amount that it will not be blocked.
In Thailand, just a couple of months are enough for the card to be deactivated and the number to be given to another subscriber.

In Thailand, everything is quite simple with mobile communications. There is no problem buying a SIM card for a foreigner. Just arrive and buy immediately at the airport. The procedure takes a few minutes. Next, connect the Internet package, voila, and you are online. Internet in Thailand will cost you less using a local SIM card than through Russian operators with their roaming options.

There are several mobile operators in Thailand:

  • DTAC or DTAC Happy(). I recommend buying these SIM cards, they are the easiest to use.
  • AIS or 1-2 Call()
  • TrueMove()

Tariffs for calls and Internet are the same for everyone, plus or minus. Prepare about 300-800 baht for internet per month.

I most often use DTAC, it’s the easiest to figure out the tariffs (True will break his leg on their website). Also, AIS sometimes travels with me as a second SIM card, although I would not say that there is an urgent need for this.

Buy a local Thai SIM card online in advance and get 4G internet for 8 days in 131 baht instead of 299 baht. Your SIM card will be waiting for you right at the airport at the Klook/Dtac kiosk. This is just a gift, you won’t find these prices anywhere else. The tariff is more than enough for instant messengers, browsing websites, google maps etc. Just in case.

Coverage areas are also similar. But I personally think that the coverage and speed of DTAC and AIS are generally better than True. But it all depends on the specific area. No matter how much I traveled around Tai, there was 4G/3G almost everywhere, maybe except for remote mountainous areas. That is, if you are not going to go somewhere, then by and large it does not matter what kind of SIM card you have.

Also, if you need as much speed as possible (for example, for work), then no one bothers you to buy all 3 SIM cards at once and test them in your rented home, whoever is faster.

Why am I all this? Don’t listen if someone says that one operator is much better than another, it all depends on the specific location.

How to get internet on a laptop

Everyone has modern smartphones There is such an option as “access point”. By turning it on, your phone turns into a router that distributes WIFI. Naturally, you must have a SIM card with the Internet, which the smartphone will distribute to laptops within its range. So USB modems are no longer needed.

None of the Thai operators prohibit the distribution of the Internet to computers, so you can use it. This is especially true if the WIFI in the hotel is too slow (this often happens).

Call costs in Thailand and roaming

For some of our People, Thailand, this is somewhere far away, overseas, this is a country in which they film programs about the life of primitive people and therefore the question mobile communications in Thailand very relevant. Many tourists going to Thailand prepare very thoroughly, depositing amounts exceeding $100 into their mobile account in the hope that this will be enough for the entire vacation. For what? Calling from Thailand to Russia is sometimes cheaper than calling a landline number in Russia! In this article we will look at three popular cellular operators in Thailand - AIS, True Move And DTAC.

The main drawback of all mobile operators in Thailand is their unfriendliness towards non-Thai speakers. There is practically no information on official websites English language, very much important and useful information about tariffs, conditions and promotions are presented in Thai in... graphic format! Even automatic translation impossible!

A passport is not required to connect to mobile communications, but in case of loss of the SIM card You won't be able to get your number back. If you are going to stay in Thailand for a long time, then the SIM card must be registered with the operator. This can be done in the office or online on the official website.

Internet in Thailand

See the special article about using, setting up and charging mobile Internet from mobile operators.

General issues regarding mobile communications in Thailand:

  • Where can I buy SIM cards? In any hypermarket, in any 7Eleven or Familyly Mart store. As a rule, in all tourist places SIM cards are in the most visible place. If you couldn’t find it, show your Russian SIM card and ask the seller “Ti Nai?” (Where?) and they will definitely show you.
  • Where can I top up my balance? At 7Eleven and Family Mart stores. If you are not at all comfortable with English, then just give the cashier your phone number and 100\200\300 baht, they will do everything themselves.
  • How to call from Russia to Thailand? Cell numbers Thailand look like 0*********, in order to call from Russia to Thailand you need to transfer the number to international format+668********. For example: To call from Russia to the Thai number 0812345678 you need to dial +66812345678. You need to indicate the number in the same format when sending SMS from Russia to Thailand.
  • Thailand Tourist Police Number. 1155, 1699
  • How to send SMS to Russia? (For all operators) To send SMS to Russia you should also enter +7хххххххххх . You can use the capabilities of IP telephony and send via 0047ххххххххххх, but this does not affect the cost.
  • What are the differences between IP telephony codes 004, 008, 009, 007? In cost, tariffs, perhaps in quality and most importantly, these are the services of various companies. I most often use 004 (for DTAC) to call Russia, but there are times when something doesn’t work and then you can use other numbers to make a call.
    • 004 special code for DTAC
    • 001 or 009 service from CAT Telecom
    • 007 or 008 service from TOT PCL
    • 005 or 00500 service from Globaline

Cellular operator DTAC

The most popular operator tariff mobile communications DTAC is Happy.

Cellular operator AIS

Popular operator tariff AIS in Thailand, is One-2-Call.

Mobile operator True Move

Advantages of sim cards True Move the fact that they are given out at the airport for free! The most popular rate among tourists is Inter Sim.

Inter SIM tariff plan
