In April 2014, Microsoft officially announced the closure of Windows XP support services. Along with standard updates, the personal computer user will no longer receive security-related updates.
Despite the cessation of support, Microsoft continues to release updates to cash desks and ATMs using Windows XP POS

For such computers, the transition to more modern versions of Windows is quite problematic and will require a lot of time. Therefore, this system will receive software updates until 2019.

What to do after the termination of support

Update Center stopped sending packages of fresh software, which is why the Windows XP update does not work. Each user himself determines the available way out of the situation:

  1. Continue to use outdated OS. In this case, the security system will not be able to effectively protect the computer from virus attacks.
  2. Make some changes to the registry that will allow you to install updates for Windows XP POS.
  3. Replace the previous operating system with a more modern version of which will allow you to receive the latest updates.
  4. If you are unable to turn on updates on Windows XP, you can purchase new hardware.

What are system updates for?

Until April 2014, the inclusion of an automatic update of Windows XP meant the constant receipt of new software packages that minimize the vulnerability of the system and fix bugs. But at the same time the constant search for fresh software products significantly loads the computer's processor, which leads to its suspension and slowdown.

In general, updates are needed to improve the system and increase its security level. The absence of installed updates often leads to incorrect operation of programs, built-in and peripheral elements. The development of software, drivers and other modules requires developers to respond quickly to make additional programs and changes to the OS.

How to get the latest updates for Windows XP by repairing the registry

For those users who are accustomed to the old version of the operating system and do not want to move to a more modern one, it is especially important to launch the Windows XP update. This step was made possible by the existence of a special operating system based on Windows XP and designed for self-service systems, cash desks and ATMs - Windows Embedded POSReady.

PC users did not have the right to directly install updates on windows XP designed for Windows POS on their OS. To download the latest updates for Windows XP, follow the instructions below:

  • To get started, go to the registry editor by pressing Win + R.
fig.1. In the field that appears, type regedit and click OK
  • Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \\ SYSTEM \\ WPA \\ section in the editor.
  • Then you need to create a subsection in this section.
fig.2. To do this, right-click on the WPA name and in the menu that appears, click Create, and then Section
  • Right click on the free field on the right. In the Menu, select the Create section and tap the DWORD value.
Fig.3. Calling the parameter Installed assign it the value 0 × 00000001
  • To make all updates to Windows XP available, restart the computer. After that, the computer will be perceived by Windows Update as a POS device.

Unfortunately, official support for Windows XP ended in April 2014: regular updates and fixes no longer come out for the operating system. However, if you still have not installed Service Pack 3, which combines old updates, it's time to install it.

To upgrade Windows XP to SP3, download the package from the official Microsoft website. Before installing it is recommended to back up important files just in case and disable antivirus. After that, double click on the downloaded SP3 file to run it. Follow the instructions of the installation wizard, and when done click “Finish” to restart the computer. Do not forget to turn on the antivirus later if it is disabled.

Unofficial update of Windows XP

Advanced users have come up with a way to extend the receipt of updates for Windows XP by editing the registry. This allows you to automatically install updates to the system for the version of Windows Embedded POSReady 2009, which is based on Windows XP, but is intended for cash registers and ATMs. However, it should be borne in mind that such updates directly on Windows XP have not been tested, so it is impossible to 100% guarantee their reliability.

To use this update method, open Notepad and copy the following code into it:

  • Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
  • "Installed" \u003d dword: 00000001

Then select "Save" in the "File" menu. In the save window, select the “All files” option in the “File type” menu and give the new file any suitable name with the .reg extension, for example, “update.reg” (without quotes). Click the Save button, then locate the saved file and double-click it to automatically make the necessary changes to the registry. If you are asked to confirm the operation, click "Yes".

Unofficial Service Pack 4

In addition, for Windows XP, an unofficial Service Pack 4 update was released recently. It contains all updates released by Microsoft since Service Pack 3, and also automatically makes the changes described above to the registry. You can download the package from Softpedia.com. It is installed in the same way as SP3. But, of course, it must be remembered that this is an unofficial update, so it’s impossible to guarantee its normal operation. However, after the end of official support, this is one of the few remaining ways to upgrade Windows XP.

The Windows service pack is a large collection of patches and tools for improving the reliability of the operating system. In the case of Windows, there are 3 versions: sp1, sp2 and sp3. It is strongly recommended to use the latest one - it is the most stable and secure, it supports many even modern applications. If you still have sp2 or sp1, you can download all the necessary updates for Windows XP to get the version of sp3.

How to find out the current version

To get started, users need to find out which version of Windows XP is currently installed. This can be done using the computer properties panel:

If sp2 or sp1 is installed, follow the further instructions.

Windows XP Update

The easiest way is to automatically update. The computer will automatically download all the necessary packages and install them in the background, without interfering with your work. If autoupdate was active, Windows XP would have already installed sp3. Once this has happened, it is necessary to enable this function (at least temporarily):

Now you just have to wait until all the necessary packages are downloaded from the Microsoft server and installed on your PC. In case there are any problems and nothing happened, try the alternative described below.

Downloading a service pack from Microsoft

You can also download all the necessary files from Microsoft servers and install them manually. Despite the fact that support for Windows XP has already ended, all the necessary packages are available on the official website for free access:

After these steps, the sp3 package will be downloaded to your personal computer.

Install Update

Open the downloaded file.

Many users believe that installing operating system updates is a kind of secondary task that can be postponed until later, or completely ignored. It must be said that those who hold such an opinion are one of the most numerous clients of computer services, which are caused there by the need to recover data after a virus attack or “cure” a computer from a particularly persistent infection. In addition, the refusal of system updates is a decrease in the level of its stability and reliability of its operation.

Tasks that are solved using Windows updates

  • System protection. Any version of Windows, including the latest, contains a lot of hidden vulnerabilities (loopholes) that are used by cybercriminals for unauthorized access to user data. Or to use the victim’s computer for its own purposes, for example, to conduct DDoS attacks, send spam, extract cyber-currency, etc. System updates protect the user from criminal encroachments by closing these loopholes.
  • Full hardware and software support. Developers of computer hardware and software are constantly improving technologies, adding new functionality to their products. And this functionality will not be able to be implemented by the operating system unless the corresponding update is implemented in it. Also, thanks to updates it becomes possible to support new equipment.
  • Improving computer performance and stability. New driver versions included in Windows updates can increase device performance and reduce power consumption. And new libraries and system modules make the OS more stable and rational.

If the consumption of traffic or the stability of access to the Internet makes it impossible to download all updates, you must install at least those that have critical or important status. They eliminate the most dangerous vulnerabilities and fix the most serious errors.

As stated by representatives of Microsoft, support and release of updates for Windows XP will last until April 8, 2014.

How to download and install the update

Updates are installed through the Microsoft Windows Update Center, accessible through the control panel:

Configure scheduled updates

This option is also available from the Windows XP control panel.

  • Click the “Start” button and launch the control panel. Find the “Automatic Update” option in it.

  • Here you can choose one of three modes for installing updates, as well as disabling it (it is not recommended to completely disable it, unless you are using the WSUS Offline Update service). The best option is an automatic update on a schedule. You yourself designate a day of the week and time for this. Two other options offer manual installation of updates at the user's choice and only notification of the need to download and install them.

How to remove update windows xp

This sometimes has to be resorted to when the installed Windows XP update causes a crash.

  • Launch the control panel and select the “Add or Remove Programs” option and check the “Show updates” box.

  • Select from the list the update after which the problem occurs, and click “Delete”. Then restart the computer.

Why Windows XP is not updated and how to deal with it

The problem with updating Windows XP occurs for a variety of reasons, of which the following is most common:

  • Virus infection. The presence of an active virus in the system may prevent the computer from accessing the update server, modify the registry keys responsible for it, interfere with their installation and so on. The solution is to remove the virus and restore the damaged functions of the system.
  • Prevent Windows Update security policies. This can be done for any purpose by the administrator of the computer, and in some cases by a virus. If you yourself belong to the group of administrators and did not make such settings, first of all perform an anti-virus scan.
  • Not enough hard disk space.. Some Windows updates, especially large Service Packs, require a lot of free space. So make sure you have enough of it.
  • Hardware failure or lack of support for Windows drivers by some devices. In this case, failures may occur when you try to install updates that contain drivers. If this happens to you, refuse to install such an update and contact the hardware developer.
  • Using an unlicensed copy of Windows. In this case, there will be no updates available for you, but you can still install critical and important updates.

If the search for reasons did not help you figure out why Windows is not being updated, you can use the Microsoft troubleshooting tool.

Installing Updates with WSUS Offline Update

For organizations or a large network of home computers, you can organize an offline system update service using the tool WSUS Offline Update  - a program that downloads Windows updates to one computer, from which the entire network can later be updated without an Internet connection. With it, you can update any operating system.

The tool does not require complicated settings. Before launching it, it is necessary to unpack it into a separate folder, where, among other things, the update package for your system will be downloaded.

Important! The WSUS service only works on licensed copies of Windows.

  • Run the file UpdateGenerator.exefrom the folder where you unpacked WSUS.
  • Check the box next to Windows XP of your language version and click “Start”. Also, before this, you can add DotNET, C ++, Windows Defender, MSE to the download by checking the corresponding “Include” checkboxes in the lower part of the window.
  • After launching the program, the download protocol will be kept in the command window and should not be closed.
  • When the download is complete, you will see a file in the WSUS directory (or subdirectories) UpdateInstaller.exe- this is what you needed. You can transfer it to other computers and run it - the updates will be installed.
