  • To install a RAM stick in such a slot, it is enough to insert the module into the slot at a slight angle and press a little on its front part. A characteristic click will be heard and the metal grips will securely hook the memory module to the special "ears".
  • There are also fully plastic slots. They have exactly the same design, but are made of plastic. Such grips should be handled very carefully, as they can break at any time. And the memory installation algorithm is similar to the previous one.

Many "computer gurus" advise before installing a new memory module to wipe its contacts with an ordinary eraser (so that the memory works better). This is fundamentally wrong. The new module should work well a priori. And if this is not the case, then the problem is much deeper. An eraser won't help here. You can only damage the contacts. As a result, the "bar" will completely fail.

Checking work

  • Before you close the cover of the RAM compartment (or completely assemble the laptop), you need to check the functionality of the module. This is necessary in order not to disassemble the device several times. Such "parsing" does not benefit the device.

Laptop test run

  • It's very easy to check if it works. Just press the power button. If everything is fine, then the operating system will start loading. If the laptop starts beeping, then the memory is installed incorrectly. You need to repeat the installation procedure.

Laptops from different manufacturers may have different RAM failure alerts: one beep, three short beeps, two long beeps, and so on. If you cannot decipher the signals, then simple logic should be applied. Since we worked with memory modules, it means that they are the problem. No need to reinvent the wheel and check all the devices one by one. That can only make things worse.

How to check the new "RAM"?

Very often, users want to know how a new module behaves under load. To do this, they “drive” the memory with a variety of tests. There are several good programs that will help you check the RAM.

memtest

Miniature program for testing RAM. The utility checks the RAM for errors and performs stress tests. However, this cannot be done while the operating system is running. You need to restart your laptop. Only then will the test begin.

First you need to download the utility from the official website of the developer. Nothing more is required. MemTest doesn't even require installation. All you need to do is run the newly downloaded executable with administrator rights.

In the next step, press Start Testing.

After starting the test, the computer will ask you to restart. This requirement must be met. At the next start after loading the BIOS, testing of the RAM will begin.

Few in such devices are upgradeable (or, at least, it is difficult), but increasing the memory on a laptop in many cases is quite easy, this instruction is about that and is aimed at novice users.

Some laptops of past years may not have configurations that are not quite balanced by today's standards, for example - Core i7 and 4 GB of RAM, although it can be increased to 8 or even 16 gigabytes, which for a number of applications, games, work with video and graphics can speed up work and relatively inexpensive.

What RAM is needed for a laptop

Before buying memory sticks and increasing RAM, it's a good idea to find out how many RAM slots are in the laptop and how many of them are occupied, as well as what type of memory is needed.

If you have Windows 10 installed on your computer, then this can be done very simply: launch the task manager (you can from the menu that appears by right-clicking on the Start button), if the task manager is presented in a compact form, click the "Details" button at the bottom, then go to on the "Performance" tab and select "Memory".

First of all, you need to evaluate whether it is worth buying 1 or 2 banks of memory to add to the laptop. This is a program that, after a quick system analysis, provides valuable information on your computer. This last information in particular is very valuable.

If you want to buy one bench, you must choose one with the same features as the one you already have. In theory, you can also select the top tables, but the system will still run at the lowest frequency of all tables installed.

Each manufacturer designs a laptop according to their space requirements. However, in recent years, design standardization has begun to simplify the process of dismantling laptops and making them easier to repair. If you look at the bottom of the laptop, you will most likely notice a small flap secured with a screw covering a hole in the laptop's plastic case. Doing home repairs on your laptop will void your warranty if it hasn't expired yet.

At the bottom right, you will see information about how many memory slots are used and how many are available, as well as data on the memory frequency in the "Speed" item (from this information you can find out whether DDR3 or DDR4 memory is used on a laptop).

In the case of Windows 8 and Windows 7, you can disassemble the laptop (or, if a separate cover is provided for accessing the memory, remove it) and look at the markings and the presence of slots (by the way, the same information may be in the instructions for the laptop). Reasons for choosing this method

The main reasons to choose a way to increase the RAM of a laptop using a flash drive can be:

  • unwillingness to spend money on improving the configuration when replacing the device with a new one in the near future;
  • lack of physical ability to install or replace the bar (outdated module type, faulty slot, etc.);
  • the need to increase memory at the moment.

Operating principle

In the Windows 7 operating system, it is possible to increase RAM due to an additional paging file created on the drive. The utility that allows you to do this is called ReadyBoost.

And you can call it by simply opening the properties of the flash drive and selecting the tab with the appropriate name.


Using this feature of the system allows you to increase the physical memory by the following amount:

  • up to 256 GB for 64-bit Windows 7;
  • up to 32 GB for Windows 7 32-bit;
  • up to 4 GB on other operating systems, including XP, if you download the utility additionally (it is not built into the OS).

The effectiveness of the method is quite decent - when reading small files, the speed of work increases by about 5-10 times. However, when working with large areas of data, the difference will be almost imperceptible.

Memory expansion process

In order to increase the memory you will need:

  1. Take any free flash drive with an interface of at least USB 2.0. However, the best choice would be to use USB 3.0, the data transfer rate (up to 5 Gb / s) of which is comparable to the parameters of DDR3 memory modules;
  2. Insert device into USB port ;
  3. Format the flash drive (optional, but desirable) in NTFS format, which will increase the amount of possible memory from the maximum 4 GB for FAT32 to a much larger size.
  4. If there is any data on the media, uncheck the box "Cleaning the table of contents". This will increase the formatting time, but will ensure that the data that will now be used as RAM is completely deleted.


After a few minutes, a message will appear on the screen informing you that formatting is complete. And after selecting the ReadyBoost tab in the properties of the flash drive, you can configure the required amount of memory increase.


So, for example, if the storage capacity is 16 GB, the laptop can use more than 15 of them. In this case, the flash drive cannot be used to store data, and when viewing its properties, the following information will appear:


It is perfectly acceptable to use less flash drive memory. In this case, it can be used for other purposes as well.

True, before removing the device from the USB port, you should cancel ReadyBoost by opening the disk properties and utility tab again, but selecting “Do not use this device”.

Not always such actions will speed up the work of your games and "heavy" applications. But, at least, the speed of opening photos and videos is guaranteed to increase.

If your laptop starts to slow down, freeze when you have a lot of applications running or with dozens of browser tabs open, the problem is not necessarily in the OS, maybe you just need to increase the volume of your device.

If a laptop (like a regular PC) lacks RAM, it starts using a special file (Windows) or a swap partition (Linux) for this purpose, which is located on the hard drive or SSD (depending on what you have installed). This option only partially solves the problem of lack of RAM, since the speed of writing and reading from this type of memory is much less than from RAM. As a result, the laptop will still work slowly and with delays. Fortunately, most laptops have the ability to upgrade the RAM by replacing or adding special RAM modules. Find out if it is possible to increase the RAM on your laptop

Unfortunately, not all devices can add RAM. In some cases, due to the fact that initially the RAM strips are simply soldered to the laptop motherboard, sometimes, the maximum amount of RAM is already installed on the laptop. Therefore, before you go to buy new RAM modules, find out if it is possible to upgrade it in your case. You can do this using the Internet by viewing the characteristics of your model. Many also recommend using programs like CPU-Z, where you can find out all the information about the number of slots, the amount and type of RAM in your computer. Here everything is at your discretion, as it will be more convenient.

What you need to know when buying RAM modules

It is important to choose the right RAM for a laptop:

  • You need to find out what its maximum volume can be installed, this can be found in the characteristics;
  • When choosing RAM, be sure to pay attention to the form factor of the brackets, since the modules for a stationary PC and a laptop are different in size. In the specifications, the first (PC) are designated as DIMM, the second (laptop) - SO-DIMM;
  • What type of RAM does your motherboard support. With a high probability it will be DDR3, but it’s better to know for sure, because different types of memory are not compatible with each other, both in terms of characteristics and physically (you won’t be able to install a DDR2 RAM module in a slot from DDR3);
  • Clock frequency. Here you need to focus on what frequency your processor and motherboard support. So, if you, for example, purchase a DDR3 memory module with a frequency of 225 MHz, and your laptop only supports 133 MHz, then it will work at this frequency. That is, you, in fact, simply overpaid for an unused frequency.

A couple more suggestions about the operating modes of RAM. You may have heard that it can work in one, two or three channels. They differ from each other in performance. So, with the same volumes, in dual-channel mode, the performance of RAM can increase from 10% in games, up to 70% when working with graphics, in comparison with single-channel mode. Accordingly, in the technical channel mode, this indicator will be even higher.

To achieve this, several conditions must be met:

  1. The laptop must have at least two slots for RAM strips;
  2. The motherboard must support multi-channel modes;
  3. RAM modules must be identical in characteristics.

Sometimes an increase in performance is also possible when the RAM modules differ in size - Flex-Mode.

And a few words about how to find out all the above characteristics. The most convenient option for Windows is to use the previously mentioned CPU-Z program. You install it and the application will show you all the necessary characteristics, and even those that are not mentioned in this article. The second way, if you do not want to bother with installing programs, is to get the RAM plan (s) from your laptop and buy similar but larger ones. And now about how to extract the old modules from the laptop and install the new ones.

Installing RAM on a laptop

Finally, let's move on to the very process of installing RAM sticks on a laptop. Consider the common case when there is a special cover at the bottom of the laptop for quick access to the RAM slots, and often also the hard drive, Wi-Fi module, and BIOS battery.

Not all laptops are designed in this way. In many models, to access the RAM, you almost completely disassemble the device. Therefore, think carefully about whether in this case it is worthwhile to independently increase the RAM.

So, turn off the laptop and unplug the power cord. If you have a removable battery, remove it. After that, with a screwdriver, unscrew the screws from the cover (they, as a rule, cannot be removed from it), and remove it. Now we have access to RAM:

If you have several slots for RAM and they are occupied, we take out the old strips by bending the special latches to the sides:

Now we install new RAM modules in empty slots. Please note that this is done at an angle of approximately 45 degrees:
