In this article I will talk about how to properly save all data from an Android device (phone or tablet) in order to restore this data after flashing it or on a new device.

By important data I mean: contacts, SMS, photos and videos, and, to some extent, applications.

    • How to save contacts on Android:

    One of the advantages of the Android operating system is that all contacts are linked to a Google account by default and stored in the cloud. That is, as soon as you enter your Google account information on a new device (or a reflashed one), all your contacts will immediately download and be available.

    Just in case, let's make sure that your contacts are actually synced with the Google cloud. To do this, go to your mail via the web at https://mail.google.com/

    1. Enter your Google account username and password.

    2. At the top right, click the "All applications" button:

    4. In a new window you will see all your contacts. If they are not there, go to the settings of your Android device and enable synchronization for your Google account (All apps -> Settings -> Accounts -> Google).

    Be careful! If your contacts are not in Google and you do not enable synchronization, you will lose all contacts when you reset your settings!

    How to save SMS on Android:

    Unfortunately, there is no built-in application for saving SMS in the Android system, but there is an excellent alternative - the SMS Backup & Restore application. Install it from the official Google app store and run it (it's free):

    Open the application, click the "Make backup" button, leave all the default values ​​and click OK:

    The program saved all SMS and call data into special files in the internal memory. To be safe, we will copy these files to your computer along with photos and videos. More on this later.

    How to save photos and videos from an Android device:

    1. Connect your phone to your computer or laptop using a USB cable, and the phone must be unlocked.

    2. Now on your computer, go to Explorer (My Computer, This Computer), you will see the connected device:

    3. Log into this device and copy the following folders and files to your computer from there:

    • The entire DCIM folder contains your photos and videos;
    • The Download folder in its entirety, these are the files you downloaded from the Internet;
    • The SMSBackupRestore folder, in this folder you previously saved data about all SMS and calls;

    This is where I will finish the instructions. If you need to save data from a specific application, please do so, and I will tell you how. Unfortunately, there are no universal instructions for saving application data.

    The instructions were not very detailed in some places, if you need clarification, just do it.

    By reinstalling the application

    Download and install the game through your Google account (the one that was used for the previous game).

    Then we go through the first three levels (a stable Internet connection is required).

    If we save the current state of the game directly on the server, in a Google account, then we can continue the game on any device from the moment it was stopped. What do I need to do:

    Log in to your Google+ account, open the “Home” tab, go to the “Play Games” application, call up the menu (three-dash icon), go to the “My Games” section, select the game, the save will be shown in the “About the application” tab.

    To delete all information about the game process from the server, go to Google Settings on your device, click the “Menu” icon located in the right corner of the display (it may differ depending on the gadget model), and select the “Delete application data” line.

    How to save progress in games on Android (with ROOT)

    Unfortunately, the previous method does not guarantee 100% preservation of progress, therefore, we will consider the most popular among gamers.

    To be able to use this method, the following conditions are necessary: ​​and it must be the PRO version, otherwise, if the game is saved, the passage itself will not be saved.

    We launch the Titanium Backup program, open the “Backups” tab and select the game (or any desired application) that we will back up (save), click, in the window that opens with the selected game, activate the “Save” button:

    The backup process will begin immediately. I must say that it can last quite a long time (depending on the capabilities of the device and the weight of the game itself). Upon completion of the procedure, in the “Backups” tab you will be able to see the number of backups created (in the screenshot - 1 backup), the date and time of creation.

    • “Data only” - in the case when the game itself is installed and only progress is needed.

    Everything in this case, backups are created on sdcard. If the game you are interested in takes up a lot of memory, then you can easily store it on your PC by moving it to your computer using a USB cable.

    How to save and restore progress in games on Android (without ROOT)

    In this part of the article we will talk about the Helium - App Sync and Backup program. This utility makes it possible to save gameplay on a non-rooted device, so it represents serious competition to Titanium Backup.

    Setting up Helium:

    Download the Helium application and install it on your Android device. The next step is to download and install the Helium Desktop App on your desktop or laptop (you can skip this step if your device is rooted). If necessary, if ADB drivers have not been installed on the PC, then find them on the manufacturer’s website, download and install them.

    Now you can start creating backups:

    We connect our device to the computer via a USB cable, launch Helium by clicking on the application icon on the desktop. We skip the prompt that appears on the screen to install the program on the PC (we did this), open the menu (three vertical dots in the upper right corner of the display), select “Backup” and in the list that appears, check off those applications or games that we will make backup copies of. After this, the “Reserve” button located in the lower right corner of the screen will become active, click on it. A window will open asking you to select a location to store your backups:

    Then the data backup process will begin, and upon completion, a message indicating the completion of the procedure will appear. What needs to be done to restore copies. Launch Helium again, press the menu button and select “Restore and Sync”:

    We select the storage in which we saved the data, select the desired game (or application), check the box, after which the “Recovery” button will become active. Click, wait for the process to complete, and enjoy life:

    To send a backup copy of the data to a PC, we need to open the menu, select “Download PC”, after which the server will be launched, which will display the IP address. You need to copy it and place it in the address bar of your browser. At the entered address, a page with a simple and clear interface will open, through which you can perform a backup.

    You can export and download your data from Google products, such as emails, calendar, and photos, for local storage or use in other services.

    • Once your archive is saved to Dropbox, Google is no longer responsible for it. From now on, it will be subject to the Dropbox Terms of Service.

    3. You will be redirected to the Box service website. If prompted, sign in to your account.
    4. In the Box asking if Export Data can access your information, click Allow access to Box.
    5. To keep your data private, make sure that only you have access to the Box folder. When exporting data to a corporate account, remember that an organization administrator will be able to view it even if you don't create a sharing link.
    6. In the received letter, select Show in Box. A Box folder containing your archive will open.
    7. To download the archive, use the function provided for this in the Box service.

    Notes

    • When you complete these steps, the Data Export service will appear in the list of connected applications that have access to some of your data. You can revoke access at any time, but you'll need to grant it again the next time you export data to Box.
    • The maximum archive size will be reduced if it does not meet the file upload limit in your Box account. Files exceeding this limit will not be exported.
    • Once the archive is uploaded to Box, Google will no longer be responsible for it. From now on, it will be subject to the Box Privacy Policy.

    Allows you to automatically create archives with selected data every two months throughout the year. The first archive will be created immediately.

    Note. If you have Advanced Protection enabled, regular export will not be available.

    Archive size

    Select the maximum size of the archive to be created. If the exported data exceeds this limit, it will be split into multiple archives.

    Once the archive is created, we will send you a link to it by email. Depending on the amount of information stored in the account, this could happen in a couple of minutes or a few days. Usually a link to the archive arrives on the day of the request.

    Note. If you have Advanced Protection enabled, the export will begin in two days.

    Which format should I choose when downloading?

    The choice depends on which files you are exporting from, which service, and what you need them for. We have added support for the most popular and convenient file types. For example, contacts are exported in vCard format, which is supported by most email services. However, you can choose other options.

    Where should the data be stored?

    Export the files to a safe location with enough free space. It is usually easiest to download the data directly to your computer.

    If others have access to your computer, export the data to Google Drive or another storage location that only you can use.

    Note. If you store data in Google Drive and plan to delete your Google account, first move the archive to another location.

    Why is the archive split into several files?

    If the archive size exceeds the limit you set, it will be split into several parts.

    You can avoid this by choosing a 50GB limit.

    Note. To unpack an archive in TGZ format, you may need special software. In addition, you cannot use Unicode characters in the names of such files.

    Why is the link to download the archive limited?

    The archive is available for downloading for approximately 7 days. Then it will need to be created again, since during this time the data will become outdated.

    When a person buys an Android phone, after turning it on for the first time, he sees a dialog in which he needs to create a Google account.     If you already use another email address whose address is known to everyone, then you should not switch to Gmail for no reason.

    In this service you can store all your contacts. If you save on your Android phone contacts in your Google account, then they can be seen on any device where you are logged into your Google Account!

    You don't have to worry about losing your contacts - they are stored in cloud storage. And in this case, you don’t need to copy contacts when buying a new phone or tablet, you just need to log into your Google Account on the new device and turn on synchronization. And after a few seconds, all contacts are already on the new device.

    Everyone has probably heard about the Google Play store, where you can download applications and games; a Google account is required for the store! The Google Play store stores all data about your applications in your account. If you bought a new phone and signed in to the Google Play store using your Google Account, you will be able to find all the applications that you previously installed.

    In addition, paid applications are also linked to your Google Account, and not to your phone! And if it’s time to change your phone, then you just need to log in to your Google Account on the new phone and the paid games that you purchased earlier can be downloaded for free!

    4. Login to Chrome Browser

    If you use the Chrome browser on a computer, you can log into your Google Account for the Chrome browser, then all your bookmarks, search history, and saved passwords will be stored in your Google Account.

    And if you reinstall Windows, or want to work on a different computer, just sign back into your Google Account and get all your bookmarks, settings, and designs.

    Previously there was a Google Docs service, now it has been combined with Google Drive. Google Drive allows you to store your documents, files, photos, videos on secure cloud storage. Files can be viewed online in a browser, you can also edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations online, and you can give access to files and folders to other Google users for collaboration.

    You can also install Google Drive on your computer, in which case all your files from Google Drive are available on your computer in a special folder that automatically synchronizes them with cloud storage.

    6. YouTube

    Yes, YouTube is one of Google's services; you don't have to register to watch videos. But if you log into your Google Account on YouTube, you can like or dislike, comment on videos, add videos to your playlists or favorites.

    To communicate on a social network Google+ (Google Plus) A previously created Google account is also sufficient. All you need to do is create your profile.

    A single Google account will be used to sign in to Google+.

    One account for all services

    All the components I mentioned above make up less than 10% of all Google projects. Therefore, if you create a Google Account on your Android phone or computer, you will have access to all projects at once without having to register separately for each service!

    Contacts, photos, progress in games - smartphones contain no less necessary information in their memory than computer hard drives. Android backup allows you to prevent the loss of important data by storing it securely on Google servers or on your computer.

    Backup to Google servers

    For Android to work fully, you need a Google account - a Gmail account, with which you can log in to any service from the global corporation. Therefore, an Android backup to Google is the easiest way to save content and settings. To back up your contacts, some application data, calendar and disk, just add your Google account in the settings and turn on synchronization.

    The marked data will be automatically saved to Google servers. To restore them to your phone from a backup or transfer them to another device, just add an account and enable synchronization.

    There is also a “Backup and Reset” section in your phone settings. Here you need to enable backup, add a Google account for synchronization and activate auto-recovery, which will help you return a copy of the settings and data of some applications when you reinstall them.

    Important information is stored on Google servers, but, for example, progress in a game cannot be transferred to another device using such synchronization. If you want to save absolutely all your data, then you need to know how to make a full backup.

    Backup via Recovery

    The standard Android recovery menu (Recovery) has extremely limited functionality - resetting settings and installing updates. But if you install an alternative Recovery (for example, Clockworkmod) on your phone, you can perform a number of operations, including backup. In fact, this will not be a backup copy of the data, but a full-fledged snapshot of the system.

    If you don’t know what custom Recovery is and have never installed it, then it is recommended to immediately move on to the next point in the guide, which describes how to create a backup using a program for backing up Android on a PC, called Adb Run.

    If you have a custom Recovery, then making a snapshot of Android is not difficult:

    1. Turn off the phone, go to Recovery (usually you need to hold down the “Volume +” and “Power” keys).
    2. Use the volume rocker and power button to open the “Backup and Restore” section.
    3. Select "Backup" to create a copy of the current firmware state.

    The backup will be saved to the memory card, in a folder called “CWM” or “TWRP”, depending on what Recovery is installed. Then there are two options:

    • Store the system image on a memory card.
    • Connect your phone to your computer and transfer the backup to your hard drive so as not to fill the mobile device’s memory with a large amount of data.

    To restore Android data after a backup via Recovery, you need to make sure that the system image is in the appropriate folder on the SD card. Then you should go to Recovery again, open the “Backup and Restore” section and go to “Restore”. A list of backups available for restoration will appear, from which you need to select the appropriate system snapshot.

    Using the Adb Run program

    If you want to backup Android to a computer without creating a backup in the Recovery menu and setting up a Google account, then use the free ADB RUN utility. For it to work, two conditions must be met:

    • USB debugging is enabled on your phone.
    • Mobile device drivers are installed on your computer.

    The drivers must be for the model that you connect to the computer. If the conditions are met, you can proceed to creating a backup copy.


    The backup copy is stored on the computer; to return the data to the phone, you need to run Adb Run again and go to the “Backup” section. Here you should open the “Adb Restore” subsection and select the desired backup, after which the data will be copied back to the mobile device’s memory and to the SD card.

    Methods for creating a backup copy on Android are not limited to the tools described. In the Play Market you can find a dozen applications (with root or without root) that allow you to save different amounts of data - Safe Backup, Super Backup, Titanium Backup. But before using the application's capabilities, be sure to read user reviews about its operation - some programs are unstable.
