Change the ringtone and notifications

Changing the sounds of incoming calls or messages is actually a fairly simple task, and the process is almost identical on all versions of Android.

Method 1

First, go to the main system settings;
Find the item “Sound Profiles” and go into it. On other devices the name may be different, for example “sound settings”;
Opposite the “General” profile, click the gear and get into the profile settings. Here the settings become available to us: volume, vibration, voice call melodies, video call melodies, notification sounds, etc.;
select a ringtone. To do this, tap on the item “Voice call ringtone” and get into the multimedia storage. Now all that remains is to select the desired ringtone and click OK. This option may not be available if the device is in vibration mode (silent);

If you are looking for an application for slicing .mp3 files, then here you can use a program such as Ringtone Maker or Ringtone Slicer. But, if the media files are already ready for use, then a file manager is needed to solve this problem.

Method 2

In such cases, we recommend using ES Explorer, which is much more functional than the standard explorer. If Explorer is already installed, then you could see that when you clicked on the “Voice call ringtone” item, the system offered you a choice of which application to use to set the sound.

ES Explorer does not allow you to pre-play these files, it simply activates the file that you see on the screen. However, once you select a file, it is registered as a notification sound (ringtone) and will be available in the list of default ringtones.

Method 3

This method may not work on all devices. But, it is worth your attention. This method will make it very easy to add your media files to the list of default ringtones. So, we will need any file manager, even a regular one will do.

launch the file manager;
in it we look for the required mp3 file and copy it;
in the phone memory (not on the SD card) look for the Ringtones folder and paste the previously copied file there. Thus, this ringtone will now be available in the list of ringtones by default.
Now we perform all the steps described above - in method 1, and look for your ringtone that you just copied.

Note. In order for method 3 to work correctly, the names of the files and meta descriptions should not have Cyrillic characters. But, if this method didn’t work, don’t be upset, use method 2.

It will be much more fun if you set different ringtones for your loved ones or even for all the subscribers in your phone book. To set a ringtone for a contact from the phone book you need to:

go to the phone book;
decide on the choice of contact on which you are going to set a melody and stamp it;
click it to view full information

If you now open “Sound Profiles”, and then click on the line “Ringtone of a voice call”, then on the choice offered by the system, click “ES Explorer”, which does not play, but activates the file that you will see on the display. Another method that adds selected media files to the list of default ringtones. Moreover, here you can use both the installed and standard file manager. What to do:

In the main menu, open the file manager (can be “file manager” or “Explorer”):

Find the desired file (mp3) and copy it.
In the smartphone settings, open “Memory”, find the Ringtones folder and paste the copied file into it.

Ringdroid and Ringtone Maker are two of the most popular apps for this purpose, although they are not the only ones and there are hundreds of other similar apps. Both of the above apps can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. This guide will cover working with Ringtone Maker, but the process is very similar for its counterparts.
You can also use these apps to create notification ringtones. The process is similar.

Take the MP3 file from which you want to make a ringtone. The apps we use will allow you to edit an MP3 file and set it as your ringtone. It's a good idea to cut only the parts you want from the song rather than listen to it from the beginning. To edit an MP3 file, you need to place it on your Android device. There are several ways to transfer to your phone:

You can download the MP3 file directly to your device if you have the appropriate link.
You can transfer MP3 files located on your computer by connecting your Android device to it and copying them to the Music folder. Or use a service like Dropbox for this purpose, which will allow you to upload a file from your computer directly to your device’s memory.
MP3s purchased from Google Play or Amazon require downloading to your computer before they can be downloaded to your Android device.

Launch the newly installed program to create a ringtone. You will see a list of ringtones and all audio files that Ringtone Maker will find in standard folders. An MP3 file located in standard folders (Downloads, Notifications, Music) will be displayed in this list. Otherwise, you will have to find the required folder yourself.

Press the Menu button (⋮) and select "View." A window will open for navigating through the folders of your device, in which you need to find the desired MP3 file.

Find the MP3 file you want to set as your ringtone. Navigate through the folders and find the MP3 file you are interested in. You should look for the file you just downloaded from the website in your Downloads folder. When transferring a file from your computer, you need to find it in the folder where you copied it (usually Music or Ringtones).

Click on an MP3 file to open it. The song will appear as a wave and the controls/edits will appear. Don't worry about the original file while editing, as the changes will not affect it.

Set Start and End points. Once the song is loaded into the editor, you will see two moving sliders on the waveform. Click and drag these sliders to where the desired melody starts and ends. The time interval for repeating the melody when receiving an incoming call differs on different devices, but usually it is 30 seconds.

Press the "Play" button every time you want to listen to the resulting melody. You can use the track size limiter fine-tuning tool to do this by pressing the "+" and "-" buttons.

1. Set a specific ringtone as default

2. Setting a ringtone for a specific subscriber

In order to put music on a call from the selected subscriber, you need to act a little differently. You need to start setting up specific sound signals from the address book of your mobile device.

As you can see in the following screenshot, the built-in address book of a smartphone (tablet) has a special sub-item that allows us to select a particular melody. In the case described in the manual, this item is called “Default melody”.

By selecting this line of settings, you and I will be taken to a pop-up menu, which will allow us not only to listen to the entire existing “mobile repertoire” of the gadget, but also to determine what composition should sound when there is an incoming call from a specific subscriber.

But! No matter how tempting it may be, approach the choice of melody for your bosses and relatives with the utmost caution. Who knows, maybe a popular but such an offensive ringtone, although not on purpose, will deprive you of another award))

3. Setting a ringtone for a group of subscribers

Having mastered the algorithm for changing the call melody for one subscriber, you can safely move on to similar settings for groups of subscribers. Moreover, this is done very, very simply. Open the address book of your mobile device and go to the “Groups” tab.

Using the context menu, select the sub-item “Change group settings” or “Group settings”.

In the next step, go to the “Default ringtone” item or the menu bar with a similar name.

And here, at this moment, the already familiar pop-up menu will appear with a list of available musical compositions and built-in ringtones. The rest is a matter of your taste. Choose!
