How to remove background using adobe photoshop. How to cut out a background in Photoshop: an easy and fast way

One of the advantages of Photoshop is the ability to change the background. To replace the background in Photoshop, the old background must first be removed, but not everyone knows how to do this. Therefore, now we will talk about how to remove the background in Photoshop.

Method 1

The easiest way to remove a background is to use a background eraser. All that is required is to open the image: File> Open (File> Open). Duplicate the photo layer (Ctrl + J), and then delete the background. When everything is deleted, save: File> Save As (File>

Option 2

In the second option we will use the Magic Wand tool. This option is suitable for cutting out objects that have their own clear and even shape and the same color, as well as for simply removing the white background in Photoshop. Open the file: File> Open (File> Open). Duplicate the photo layer (Ctrl + J), and then delete the very first layer. Take the Magic Wand Tool (W). Set the Tolerance parameter to 20 and select the desired color. The higher the color gamut, the lower we set the Tolerance value. Hold down the Shift key and, without releasing it, select the remaining unnecessary colors and delete them: Edit > Cut (Delete). We wipe off everything that has not been removed with the “Eraser” tool. After the image has lost its background, save it: File> Save as and select the *.PNG format.

Option 3

This option is suitable for these types of images where there are many multi-colored objects, because it will use the “Color Range”. Open the file: File> Open (File> Open). Duplicate the photo layer (Ctrl + J), and then delete the very first layer. Select Allotment > Color range and, while holding down the Shift key, select all unnecessary colors. All the colors you have chosen should automatically be highlighted. Select the Quick selection tool and the Subtraction mode. We wipe away those objects that do not need to be removed. After selecting the background, delete it with the Delete key. When the image loses its background, save it.

Using Photoshop, removing the background is very easy. With our tips you can easily cope with this task.

Any designer, regardless of his qualifications, is faced with a situation where he needs to remove the background from an image, leaving the desired object untouched. And if with simple objects everything works out more or less successfully, then complex ones pose a real problem for the designer.

But before I show you some great ways to remove a background in Photoshop, it's probably worth clearing up a few things. For example, what is a complex object? For me, the hard part is anything that can't be cut out with the Pen Tool. This category includes: hair, wool, grass, leaves, clouds and so on. It is precisely for extracting such objects that today’s lesson was created.

Method one: Using Channels

Removing the background using channels is perhaps one of the most effective, fastest and most popular methods IF the background is homogeneous. For example white.

For example, a charming girl.

Go to the Channels tab (you can add it through the Window menu) and select the channel that makes the object the most contrasting in relation to the background. In this case it is blue.

Let's duplicate it. CTRL+J does not work, so right-click and select duplicate channel. We turn off all channels except the duplicated one. Next, press the CTRL+L key combination and adjust the sliders so that there is maximum contrast between the background and the edges of the object.

Great. Now select the brush tool and paint the object with black. Like that:

The simplest thing remains. Hold CTRL and click on the duplicate channel icon in the channels panel to create a selection. Then we turn on all previously turned off channels and delete the duplicated one. It is very important that in the end the RGB channel remains selected. Without removing the selection, go to the layers tab and press Delete. That's all.

If the background is not uniform, you will have to tinker a lot. Let's look at the next method.

Method two: Using Refine Edge

This function appeared in Photoshop quite a long time ago. If translated into Russian, the function is called Exact edge. It allows you to remove a complex background from a complex object as efficiently as it can be done automatically. I suggest you practice on cats, in the literal sense of the word.

Using any tool convenient for you, let’s create a rough selection like this...

... and go to Select - Refine Edge.

There are no exact settings. It all depends solely on your image. Through trial and error I came up with something like this:

Of course, the result is not ideal, and cannot be so. You'll have to do a little magic with a brush. But it will take much less time than carving a lion by hand. There are no other, more effective ways to remove a complex background. That's probably all.

In custody

I hope you find this tutorial useful. In any case, I use the methods discussed today all the time when I make banners or collages. Maybe you know other ways to get rid of the background?

Removing the background is one of the first difficulties that beginners face when working with the Photoshop editor.

Let's look at some of the most popular and simple methods that will help you remove the background of a photo.

Using the eraser

Photoshop has a number of tools whose task is to independently determine the boundaries of selected objects.

One such tool is the Magic Eraser. It is available in all versions of Photoshop.

This method is suitable if you need to remove the white background of an image. The eraser does not accept other background fills:

    1. In the Tools panel, open the Rubber Tools tab. Then click on the “Magic Eraser” element;
  1. Now you should double-click the mouse pointer on the white background of the open image. The eraser will automatically detect all borders of the background and main photo. Press the Delete key to delete the selected area. In some versions of the Photoshop editor, you just need to click the pointer and the selected area will be deleted automatically.

It is worth noting that in earlier versions of the program, the magic eraser may not perfectly determine the boundaries of an object. In this case, after removing the background, you will need to enlarge the image by 200 percent and use a regular eraser to erase all the errors. In some cases, white pixels that are not part of the background may be removed.

As you can see, the eraser removed the part of the sword that was painted white and parts of the costume. This effect can be easily removed. Use the following methods:

  • Open the Magic Eraser options panel. Check the “Adjacent Pixels” (or Contiguous) option. It should be ticked. The presence of this item in the magic eraser settings allows the tool to select and delete only those sets of pixels that touch each other. This way, other elements of the picture will remain intact. To use the tool again, undo the previous result of removing the background and using the new eraser parameters, remove the background;
  • Adjust the Tolerance option in the eraser settings. The location of this settings item can be seen above in Figure 3. The higher the value of this item, the greater the likelihood that the eraser will remove more detected background shades. Increase the tolerance parameter and gradually the eraser will stop highlighting the elements of the object in the picture. If for some reason you cannot remove the border using this method, try selecting the “Layer” window in the main menu bar. Then click on “Edge Processing” and select “Remove Border”.

Result of background removal using the described parameters:

Removing the background using the Magic Wand

Another popular background removal tool is the Magic Wand. This element can be found in most graphic editors, including Photoshop.

To remove a background, first open the desired image as a new project in Photoshop. Wait for all toolbar items to load.

Now select the quick selection option. In the drop-down list you see two available tools. Click on the “Magic Wand” as shown in Figure 5.

Now all the actions will be the same as if we used the “Magic Eraser”: just move the pointer to the background part of the picture and click on it.

Once selected, the background area will have clear boundaries. Press the Backspace button to remove the fragments detected by the wand.

Important! Before you start removing the background with the Magic Wand, make sure you have unlocked the background layer. This is necessary to “unpin” it from the main picture. If a layer is not unlocked, the wand will not be able to select it correctly. Deleting may leave white areas or erase non-background parts of the photo.

To unlock the background, go to the Layers panel. Click on the lock icon to set it to the “Open” position.

Only then use the Magic Wand tool.

If the “Magic Eraser” is often used to remove the white background from images, then the “Magic Wand” is more appropriate to use to remove colored parts of the background.

Removing the background inside the picture

Often users need to remove the background, which not only intersects with the boundaries of the main part of the picture, but is also located inside it.

This method of background removal is useful if you work with black and white images or scans of drawings.

As a result of removing the background, we should get a completely transparent image, with a clearly defined outline of the car.

First you need to create a copy of the blue channel of the image. To do this, press the hotkey combination Ctrl - L.

The Levels window will appear. Move the sliders until all gray colors resemble black as closely as possible.

That is, all those elements of the outline that we want to leave should be painted black, and all parts of the background that will be deleted should become white.

Click on the thumbnail of the channel copy that was created at the very beginning. While clicking, hold down the Ctrl button.

As a result, a selected image will appear. Do the inversion by pressing the keyboard shortcut Shift -Ctrl -I .

Now press the Backspace button on your keyboard to delete the extra layer. You can create a copy of it by pressing Ctrl -J .

After removing the background and adding a new texture instead, this is the result:

Adding another background

Typically, users remove the background to add one picture to another or to change the background color/texture of a photo.

Let's look at how you can change the background of a picture whose previous back layer has been removed.

Add a drawing with a texture and a picture with a removed background to one project:

Go to the layers panel and place the structure on top. Set the blending option to Eclipse or Multiply.

As you can see, the element appeared on top of the texture, however, some white parts of the image also took on the color of the texture:

Add an additional layer mask to the topmost layer:

After adding the mask, erase the remaining texture colors from the object using the Brush. The resulting result:

In the case when you need to remove part of a picture, you should read the article on how to easily remove the background in FS.

Removing the background- This is one of the first serious difficulties that beginners face when working with Photoshop. Here we will look at the main popular and fairly simple methods that will make it possible to remove the background from any photo.

1. Using an eraser

Photoshop has a number of special tools, including the eraser and the magic eraser. It is available on every version of the program.
This method is perfect when you need to remove the white background from a photo. The eraser is unlikely to accept other fills:
1. Here he is " Magic eraser" on the picture:

2. Double-click on the white background of the image. And the eraser itself will determine all the boundaries of the main photo and background. To remove the auxiliary background, click on " Delete" Some versions of Photoshop allow you to do this simply by clicking; after selection, the background will be automatically removed.

As you most likely noticed, the eraser also removed part of the sword, which was white, and also affected the suit. This effect can be removed. You can do it like this:
- open the settings (parameters) panel of the “Magic Eraser”. Check the "Adjacent Pixels" option. This item must be ticked. The presence of this item will allow the tool to remove and select only sets of pixels that are in contact with each other. That is, the elements of the picture will not be so “radically” removed.

- now go to the “Tolerance” parameter in the settings of the same eraser. Its location can be seen in the third picture. The higher the value of the item, the higher the likelihood that the eraser will remove unnecessary background shades. By increasing the parameter, adjust so that not all elements of the object in the picture are selected. If this method, for some reason, did not remove the desired border, go to “ Layer" Then click on “Edge processing”, where activate the item “ Remove border».

Result:

2. Remove the background using the Magic Wand.

An equally popular method for removing the background from a photo. The “Magic Wand” element is found in many photo editors. To remove the background, open the desired photo in Photoshop. Wait for all items to load. Select the special item “Quick selection”. In the drop-down list, select one of the tools - “Magic Wand”.

The remaining actions are identical to working with the magic eraser. Just hover your mouse over the background part of the image and it will be highlighted. Next, remove the background using Backspace.
To unlock the background, go to " Layers" Click on the lock to set it to the “Open” position. And then use the “ Magic wand».

If the first method is used to remove the background, then the second is best used to remove colored parts of the background.

3. Removing the background inside the picture

A not uncommon request is how to remove the background inside a picture. This method is quite common and is suitable for working with black and white images or drawings.

After removing the background, in theory, you should get a completely transparent image, with a clearly visible outline of the car. But to do this, you will first need to create a copy of the “blue channel” in the photo. To do this, click Ctrl+L. This is how the Levels window appears. Adjust the sliders so that all grays resemble crisp black.

Select the thumbnail copy of this channel that was created from the very beginning. While making a selection, hold down Ctrl. As a result, the image will be selected. Invert this with Shift+Ctrl+L. Now press Backspace to delete the extra layer. A copy of it can be created using a keyboard shortcut Ctrl+J. After the background is removed and a texture is installed in its place, you will end up with something like this:

4. Adding a background to the picture

Most often, background removal is done in order to replace the color or texture of the background of the photo. Consider a way to replace the background of a picture whose back layer you have removed.

Add any texture to this pattern project:

When working with graphic files, there is often a need to remove the background around an object. This may be due to the insertion of this element of the photograph into some composition, or the desire to replace the background of the picture. In this regard, a popular question arises: “How to remove the background of a photo in Photoshop?”

Removing a solid background

When considering the issue of clearing the background in a photograph, it is worth separately considering the question of how to quickly remove a background that has a uniform shade in Photoshop. This will avoid the extra work required when removing the multi-colored part of the picture.

Before deleting the required fragment of a photo, it must be selected. This can be done in dozens of different ways, but if you need to highlight a specific shade of color, then there is a special tool in Photoshop that allows you to do this as quickly as possible. By selecting the "Selection" menu item in the Quick Access Toolbar, you need to find the "Color Range" item.

In the window that appears, select the Eyedropper tool and click on the background you want to select. Using the sliders, all you have to do is adjust the selected area and click “Yes”. The result of these actions will be the selection of all areas of the photo containing the selected color. To delete, you will need to press the "Del" key on your keyboard. This method is one of the simplest, qualitatively solving the problem of how to remove the background in Photoshop.

"Magic" cleaning

An analogue of such background removal is the Eraser tool, which can perform this action even faster. To do this, just select “Magic Eraser” and click once on the background - as a result, a checkerboard background will appear in its place, which symbolizes the presence of a transparent part of the photo. The disadvantage of this approach is that there is no control over the area that will be deleted, unlike using a quick selection.

In order to provide control over how to delete in Photoshop without consequences for the rest of the photo, it is worth using another “magic” tool that works according to a similar algorithm with the eraser, but performs selection instead of deletion. There are two such tools, and they perform the same actions - and “Quick Selection”. The only difference is that the “stick” requires step-by-step selection of a shade, while selection allows you to move the cursor over a large area of the picture at once.

Quick mask mode

The previous approaches are the answer to the question of how to remove the white background. In Photoshop, in addition to single-color backgrounds, it is possible to clear multi-color ones. Such a need may arise if a landscape that does not meet the requirements is depicted. So how to remove the background in Photoshop?

There are also several ways to accurately remove the required part of a photo. The first one is to use the "Quick Mask". A mask is a special mechanism that allows the user, using drawing tools, to paint over the area that needs to be selected. To quickly switch to the “Quick Mask”, just press the letter Q on the keyboard. Then, using a brush and eraser, you need to paint over the part of the photo that needs to be deleted. Returning to normal mode by pressing the same key, we will notice that the required area of the picture will be highlighted - to delete it, all we have to do is press the already familiar Del key.

Removing background using Lasso

If the object around which you want to highlight the background has fairly clear boundaries, then there is another convenient way to remove the background in Photoshop. To do this, use the Lasso tool. It is provided to the user in three forms. The first has a similar name, “Lasso,” - it allows you to arbitrarily draw lines for the future selection of an area. With its help, it is quite difficult to accurately select the required part, so the other two tool options are more often used.

The next one is the Straight Line Lasso - it allows you to draw a selection area using straight lines. This way you can draw a clear boundary, for example around buildings or angular geometric shapes.

For more complex elements, such as a human silhouette, you should use the Magnetic Lasso. Thanks to its algorithm of actions, it moves along the contour of the object, defining it using the difference in colors - just move the mouse cursor approximately around the element of the photo.

As a result of using the Lasso, the element itself will be selected. In order to delete, the selection should be inverted by pressing the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + I. Then you can delete the background.

other methods

It is worth noting that, when understanding how to remove the background in Photoshop, you can find several more different ways. However, most of them are quite complex, allowing for clearer removal. However, you can achieve a good result using simpler means, spending a little more perseverance and diligence, and perhaps even saving a little time.
