Microsoft Word allows you to layout a document for printing in the form of a brochure, without resorting to any additional special programs. This can be done in literally a few clicks and there will be no problems with regular text. However, you will need a cover, and the original document may contain tables or figures.

Let’s take as an example a small article with illustrations and before printing it out as a homemade book, let’s take a detailed look at the formatting steps in Word 2007 or 2010.

On the “Page Layout” tab, click the arrow in the “Page Options” line. In the pop-up window, check the “Paper Size” (rectangle with a green marker). By default, the A4 format is usually set, so we leave it that way. In order for the finished brochure to correspond to A5 size, it must be printed on a regular A4 sheet.

Go to the “Fields” tab and in the “multiple pages” line, click the arrow. In the drop-down table, select the option “”. The program changes the orientation to “landscape” and shows a sample with two columns, each of which is a page of the future book. In the preview, however, all the illustrations go beyond the margins, and the document will have to be formatted.

Cover

On the tab we find “ Front page» and choose one of the proposed options. For business text, the “Conservative” style would be appropriate. Before the article, two sheets with tables consisting of one column appear. The template asks you to fill out:

• Name of the organization,
• book title,
• date and the like.

The abstract is located on the second sheet, which corresponds to the inside of the cover. If you don’t want to fill it out, select the cell and press the right mouse button. In the drop-down window, click “Cut”, the tooltip text will be deleted, and the table itself will remain in place. This way, the article will start on the next page, and the cover inside the brochure will remain blank. When you click on “Delete rows,” not only the table cell is removed, but also the page, which in this case is not necessary.

Numbering

The cover of a book should not have extra numbers, and Word offers a special footer only for the first page. However, the document can split into. Place the cursor in front of the title of the article and select the line “Next Page” in the “Page Layout” and “Breaks” tabs. Double-click on the top or bottom of any sheet to open the “Working with Headers and Footers” mode. The program activates the “Design” tab, where there are buttons for moving to the header or footer, as well as between sections. Here you can also change the fields.

By default, a link is established between sections. To be able to work only with the headers and footers of the second part of the book, press the “Same as in the previous section” button, making it inactive. After unchecking the “special” line in the “” tab, click:

• "Insert";
• "Page number";
• "At the bottom of the page";
• “Easy number 2” (center position).

The sheets of the second section of the document are automatically numbered starting with the number three. However, you need to check the headers and footers of the first part of the brochure. If numbers appear on the cover of the book, it means that the program has again established a connection between the sections. You need to press the “Same as in the previous section” button again and remove the numbers from the headers and footers of the first part.

Text formatting

One A4 sheet contains 4 A5 size pages if printed on both sides. Therefore, the book should also contain multiple of four pages. Now there are just 12 of them in the document, but the last one is the outer side of the cover and it is advisable to leave it empty. Let's perform the usual formatting steps:

• set first line indent;
• align text width;
• move the drawings away from the edge;
• remove extra lines between subheadings;
• reduce margins.

Should not be placed separately from subsequent text. On the “Page Layout” tab, click the arrow in the “Paragraph” line, select “Position on page” and “do not tear off from next”. The picture, which took up little space on an A4 sheet, now looks large and the text surrounding it is unreadable. Activate the window of the inserted object by double-clicking and, hovering the cursor over the border, right-click. Click “Label Format”, “Position” and “Advanced”. In the next pop-up window, on the “Text Wrapping” tab, find the “top and bottom” option.

The document is located on 11 sheets and formatting can be completed, although there is another way to reduce the amount of text - changing the font size. You don't have to do this manually. If you click the “ ” button on the “Preview” tab, the program will reduce the font sizes by 1 or 0.5 points.

On the “Print” tab, check the box next to the “ ” line, select “all” and “OK”. Word itself sets the order in which the pages need to be printed. I'm sure you sometimes have a need to convert eBook files from one format to another. For example, you have a book in fb2 format and you need to print an excerpt from it on a printer or send this excerpt to a friend by email. But these are computer programs. As far as I know, this number will not work on e-readers, for example, on MagicBook R6HD.

But for conversion purposes, special converters from one format to another have been developed. And they are very easy to use.

We will now look at two free converters, developed by Dmitry Gribov: FB2toAny andAnytoFB2. The names speak for themselves. True, they do not convert absolutely any files, but nevertheless, the most necessary ones are there. You can download them for free, for example, on the website librariesFB2lib.net.ru on the Converters page.

After downloading the distributions, each of them needs to be installed on your computer in the usual way, after which two corresponding folders will appear with links to launch them.

Let's look at the capabilities and operation of each of these converters. The program interface is in English.

FB2 to Any

This is a set of several Windows programs for converting fb2 into various formats and working with books (sending to a device, etc.). Formats supported txt,rtf,lit,iSilo.pdb,rb.

Working with the program occurs without a conventional user interface in a couple of simple steps.

IN Start-All Programs select a folder FB2toAny and in it - the necessary conversion, for example, to RTF format.

In the resulting window called Open select the folder with your source file in FB2 format, select the file and click Open (Open).

Another window appears where you must select the name and location of the output file. By default, the name and folder are kept the same as the source file, only its extension is changed (in the example, to RTF). If this suits you, click Save (Save) and that's it, the transformation is complete.

A new file has appeared in the folder that you can open (in this case in MSWord) and do whatever you want with it (read, print, edit, copy to clipboard, send as an email attachment, etc.).

Any to FB2

Interactive/script conversion of TXT/HTML/MSWord documents to FB2. Supports HTTP downloading and downloading of linked documents. This interesting feature means that you can download an HTML document directly from the Internet by entering its address in the input line, and it will be converted to FB2 format and saved on your computer.

Most books on the Internet are distributed in fiction book (fb2) format. This format is very convenient for reading - the files created in it are very small in size, have low system requirements for the devices on which they are launched, and therefore can be read on almost all mobile devices, and there are enough programs for reading such files. But what if you need to print such a book?
The fb2 file itself is plain text formatted in a special way. Therefore, you can simply open the file using any text editor (Notepad, Microsoft Word, OpenOffice Writer). To do this, right-click on the file and select the menu item “Open with...”, specify the editor you need in the drop-down menu. After the file opens, copy the piece of text you need into a separate file and format it. After this, print the resulting file.
But, unfortunately, this method has many disadvantages. When you open a file, all text formatting is lost, and in addition, the text is clogged with service notes (tags) that must be removed manually. And if the book is quite large, then processing it for printing will be problematic.
You can simplify your task if you export fb2 to one of the common text formats - txt or rich text (rtf). Some reader programs for this format have this function.
Programs for printing fb2
In AllReader, open the "File" menu and select the "Export to txt" menu item, and the program will create a text file with a name similar to the original fb2 file. After this, all you have to do is format the resulting text and send it for printing (the tags are removed automatically during export). If you want to improve the readability of the text, it is recommended to export the text again - into RichText (rtf) format or similar. But, again, you lose all the illustrations for the text, since the txt format does not support them.
For complete saving and subsequent printing, it is best to export fb2 directly to rtf format - this will allow you to preserve the original formatting and design. The best programs for this are ICE Book Reader Professional and the specialized FB2 to Any converter. Both of these programs fully preserve the quality of the original file when transferred to rtf format and then printed. If the file was not completely saved during export, then open the file directly in a text editor (as described above) and replace the square brackets in the text with round brackets. After this, exporting will proceed without problems.
