How to extract from a zip folder. How to unpack (unzip) an archive: an overview of simple solutions

The last two options are the most optimal and do not force a large number of actions from the user: just click and everything is unpacked. When you select the first option, a window with extraction parameters will appear.
In this window you can specify the appropriate folder into which the unpacking will take place. Here you can also select an option such as “No paths”, in which case all files will be extracted in a solid heap, without the folders in which they were located. When you select “Overwrite”, you can activate the ability to edit files in the archive. But with standard settings, the application will make a request when it is launched.

In addition to using the context menu, you can also use the program window. To launch it, double-click on the archive icon. In the window itself, on the top panel, click “Extract”.

Recently, users have taken a liking to this application, which can work with various RAR and ZIP files. It is also free and the experience is quite similar to other applications. When the program is installed on the computer, three additional items will appear in the archive context menu:

  • Extract Here – files will be extracted to the same folder as the archive;

Extract to “folder name” – extraction will occur in the folder with the specified name.
As you can see, there are slight similarities with 7-Zip. Although the menu items are in English, the program window has a Russian-language design. If you select the first item, the following window will open:
To extract files, click on “Unzip” and select the appropriate folder.

This popular program is often used to extract files from archives with the rar extension. You can download the program directly from the official website of the developers. The main thing is to make sure that you are downloading the Russian version. The program is installed very simply, like most similar applications, so there shouldn’t be any problems here.

WinRAR is a paid program and it has a free trial period of 40 days. When this time is over, the program will continue to work and perform its functions, but now a window will pop up asking you to buy a license.

To unpack archives, you need to perform the same steps as in previous programs.
Right-click on the archive file and select one of the following options:

  • Extract to current folder – all files will be unpacked to the same place as the archive;

Extract to “folder name” – files will be extracted to the specified folder, which will be automatically created in the same directory.
Those who don’t really like to once again select a bunch of parameters can click on one of the last two options. But if you select the first one, a window with extraction options will open, where you can select the folder to unpack the files and a bunch of other parameters.

  1. For example, in the “Update Mode” section, there are such parameters.
Extracting with replacing files - when unpacking, new files will replace similar ones with the same name that were already outside the archive.
  2. Extracting and updating files has essentially the same effect, but only those files that are older than those in the archive will be replaced.
  3. Update existing files only - existing files will be updated and all others will not even be extracted. In the “Overwrite mode” section, you can set parameters for the program’s behavior when overwriting files.

In addition, using this window you can unpack damaged archives. After all, if you use standard settings, the program will generate an error and unpacking will not be possible. But if you check the box next to “Leave damaged files on disk,” then even damaged files will be pulled from the archive.

For example, in the case of music or video, they can be opened. Although this still depends on the extent of their damage in the archive.

You can also extract documents from archives through the main program window. Select everything you need and click on the “Extract” or “Wizard” button.

In some cases, the WinRAR application can also be used to backup important information.

Just keep in mind this small feature: after installing the above applications, the standard function for extracting archives with a ZIP extension may simply disappear from the context menu.

Such archives are used when packing very large volumes of information. For example, this is convenient when recording to disk, when everything in one archive simply does not fit on one disk. The files of a multi-volume archive have a serial number in their name. Depending on the program, it can take different forms: part1, z02, 003, 004 and then right up to the very last file. To unpack such archives, you must have all the parts at once, and they must be located in one folder.

The process of extracting files from a multi-volume archive is the same as when working with regular ones. The main thing is to start extracting the first volume, and all the rest will be extracted on their own. If, along with the numbered parts, there is also a simple archive with the same name, then extraction must begin with it.

Important! If a multi-volume archive with a ZIP extension was created in the WinRAR program, then it will only be extracted through this program; others are not suitable.

Information transmitted over the Internet using email, Skype or instant messenger can weigh a lot. For this purpose, data compression is carried out, i.e. the process of archiving takes place. This method is used if there is not enough free space on your hard drive or external storage device.

Compressing files is a simple process, but not all PC users know how to unzip a file and extract the data that will be used for work. Unzipping involves the use of special programs that help to “fish out” text documents, tables, photos, audio and video files from a compressed folder.

How to quickly and easily unpack a ZIP archive?

Users use services for archiving that allow them to create a zip archive. Such folders can be easily sent by mail or transmitted via other means of communication via the Internet.

Several programs are used to work with such an archive, the most popular of which are:

  • Explorer built into the Windows 7 operating system.
  • Total Commander file manager.
  • A file unpacker that works with a zip archive - it is already built into Explorer, but it is worth considering that this program does not read other formats. The procedure for unpacking a zip archive looks like this:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Find an archive there that needs to be unzipped.
  3. Right-click on the archive.
  4. A menu will appear containing the item “Extract...”.
  5. Click on the desired function.

An archive unpacker will appear on the screen, which will extract the files. The unpacking time depends on the amount of information compressed in the zip archive.

You can also use Total Commander, which does an excellent job with zip archives and other archivers. By opening the file manager, the user can copy the archive there and open it using the enter key. The contents of the archive are copied to a folder that is created in advance or moved to another location on the hard drive.

You can unpack the zip archive in Total Commander using the alt+f9 key combination. By placing the cursor on the archive in one window, and in the second window, indicate the location where the unzipped files will be moved. By pressing alt+f9, the user only has to wait a few minutes to get the necessary files.

Unzipping a RAR archive

The process of retrieving compressed data also involves the use of an application such as WinRAR, created specifically for working with RAR archivers. Most PC users use this service for compression and decompression, since it is easy to install and operate and copes well with the tasks. WinRAR is downloaded on the Internet, the Russian language is selected in the settings and launched on the computer.

Unzipping files using WinRAR uses one of the following methods:

  • On the archive, right-click the program and select “Extract files”. A window will appear showing the unpacking process. Next, indicate the path where the data will move after unpacking.
  • The second method involves selecting the location where the user wants to send the received information - to the current folder or to the folder name.

WinRAR also copes well with damaged archives. Just keep in mind that the quality of unpacking directly depends on how badly damaged the archive itself or the files in it are.

Using 7-ZIP

If you don’t want to pay for using an archiver, then users use the 7-Zip service. Finding this program on the Internet will not be difficult; you just need to carefully select sites with high-quality and proven software.

The downloaded file is launched by the user to install the program on the computer. After installation, the 7-zip File Manager symbol will appear on the desktop. A user who wants to get their files from a compressed folder will have to perform a few simple steps:

  1. Open the program.
  2. Drag the archive there or go to the “Users” folder, select the desired user, and from there go to the “Desktop” park.
  3. Double-click on the archive with the left mouse button to open the archive.
  4. Files are copied to drag and drop or extracted via the Extract option.
  5. A new window will open where the button with three dots is selected.
  6. A list of folders will appear, find the one with which the program will work, and then click “OK”.
  7. Click on the “OK” button again to start unpacking the archive.

There is an easier way to unpack the archive using 7-Zip. Having selected a folder, click “Extract to..”, which automatically creates a folder with the name of the archive in the folder where the archive was located. The unpacked files will be moved there.

Multi-volume archive: what should be taken into account?

Compression of information into several volumes occurs when the user must transfer a large amount of information. In this case, the files are divided into several small archives, designated by letters and numbers, or just numbers.

Unpacking involves extracting all parts of the archive, otherwise the information will not be received.

The unzipping process is very simple:

  • A program is selected that helps obtain information.
  • Then the first archive is unpacked in the usual way, other parts are pulled in automatically.

Only this program can access files created by WinRAR. Other archivers cannot cope and will generate an error. The same applies to multi-volume ZIP files. They are extracted only by programs that work with archives of this type of resolution.

Alternative way

A free and simple application that can handle the archive without problems is Hamster Lite Archiver. The utility was developed taking into account new computer technologies and versions of Windows, so it has a clear interface. Suitable for working with .zip and .RAR archives. After downloading it to the computer, the user must install the program.

Unpacking takes place along one of the selected paths, when the archive occurs through selection and right-clicking:

  1. A new window opens when you select the “Extract files” function.
  2. Extracts files into the current folder when "Extract Here" is selected.
  3. The data is extracted into a folder when the user decides to click “Extract to Folder Name”.

When choosing a method for “fishing” information from compressed formats, you need to consider which archiver created the archive and how much information is contained in it. It is also taken into account whether the archive in front of the user is single-volume or multi-volume, whether it is damaged or not. All these factors affect the speed of file retrieval and the completeness of the information obtained.

In this article I will teach you how to unpack archives. It's very simple.

The archive is one file with a set of others to reduce the space they occupy.

They are very effective to use if access to information is needed very rarely and the space it occupies is large.

They usually have extensions:

Well, others. There are a lot of extensions. These are the most popular.

The archive can be compressed and this seriously saves free space. They are also often used to transmit large amounts of information. This is especially useful if you need to transmit it over the Internet, and the traffic limit is limited.

Also, if you put a password on the archive, this will ensure reliable information protection. And for this you just need skills to work with them.

Additionally, I want to say that it is not necessary to completely extract all files. You can only get what you need. This is very convenient than digging through a whole bunch of information.

To unpack the ZIP, you can use Windows tools. In other cases you will have to use an archiver.

Archiver is a program for working with archives.

In the example, I will use the 2 most popular and universal ones:

  1. WinRar is shareware.
  2. 7zip is completely free.

It is worth noting that unpacking creates a copy of the files in open form and therefore you can safely delete the unpacked archive ( not always like this). Now I will show you how to do this.

You can watch these instructions both in the article and in the video. Everything is laid out in great detail.

Extract ZIP using Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer allows you to unpack archives with a ZIP extension. To do this, right-click on it. In the context menu that appears, select “Extract all...” as in the picture below.

Then a window will appear. In it, indicate the path where to unpack and proceed to extraction.

This method only works with the ZIP format. For other formats, you must use a third-party archiver.

Unzip using 7-zip

Download the free 7-zip program. For 32-bit or 64-bit. It will allow you to quickly and easily unpack various archive formats. Check the bit depth in your computer's specifications.

Once installed, a 7-zip tab will appear in your context menu. Go into it and select “Unpack” as in the image below.

In the window, specify the extraction path ( its default location).

The files will appear in the location you specified.

Unpack using Winrar

Winrar is a very convenient program and works with all extensions. It is paid, but has a free trial period of 40 days. Then you will be constantly shown a window about purchasing a license. In general, it is free to use.

Download it from the official website and install.

Unpacking in it occurs in the same way as in 7-zip. They differ in convenience and additional features.

As you can see on the left there are several additional functions that simplify your work. Confirm extraction and navigate to the unzipped files.

Unpacking a damaged archive

When unpacking, the error “The archive is damaged” appears and in order to extract the files, you will need to use the capabilities of Winrar. This error can occur even if 1 kilobyte of information is damaged, and therefore it makes sense to extract and see which files remain working.

When extracting, check the box next to “Do not delete files extracted with errors” and it will be unpacked. Look, it's on the left in the image above.

Please note that in this case, not all files will be functional.

Unpacking an archive consisting of several volumes

To do this, just collect all the volumes into one folder and unpack the first volume. Others in the chain will unpack after him.

Please note that all volumes must be present and should be extracted using the same archiver program that created them. Then everything will go well.

See the example in the picture below.

They look something like this, with an extension with a serial number added at the end. Otherwise, they are no different from ordinary ones.

I hope you were able to extract the files you needed and you can easily do this in the future. If you have questions, ask in the comments.

Hello dear visitors and friends of my blog!

If you still don’t know how to unpack an archive and how to use an archiver, learn! Most files on the Internet are zipped to reduce their size. In this article I will try to explain in as much detail as possible how to unzip a rar, zip or any other archive format. We will use free archivers.

Let's find out several ways to unpack the archive:

  1. Windows 7 unpacking zip archives in two mouse clicks.
  2. How to unpack rar, zip and other archives with 7-Zip.
  3. How to assemble an archive from parts.
  4. An alternative method of unpacking using Freearc.
  5. Video tutorial on working with the Winrar archiver.

Unzip a zip file on Windows 7 in two clicks

With zip files in the Windows 7 operating system, everything is simple, this function is already built into Explorer, you just need to right-click and click “Extract all...” But we still need programs for other archives.

Attention! Now you will learn how to unpack files, and how - this is also useful information that allows you to compress files and send by email, for example.

And suddenly you get tired of being in contact, so you should also read it.

Next, a window will appear for selecting the path to unpack the file; if you want to unpack the archive to another location, click “Browse...” and save the file to the desired path
By default, Windows unpacks files into the current folder, and if you leave the “Show extracted files” checkbox, then after unpacking an Explorer window will open with a new folder. It’s even easier to click on zip, like on a regular folder, this way you can open text files without unpacking them, but this can cause errors when launching applications from the archive, so it’s better to unzip it before opening the file.

how to unzip a zip file on your computer using 7-zip

Windows Explorer does not have a built-in function for unpacking other archives, so we will use the free 7-zip program, you can download it.
Select the program version for your system; how to find out how many bits the system will be is a separate article. Using the archiver is quite simple, just like unzipping a zip archive using Windows 7, after installing the program, the “7-Zip” item will appear in Explorer, if you right-click on the archive we need you will see it, and in the submenu we select how to extract archive.

Important points for us:

I would like to note that I only use this program; it performs all the functions for unzipping rar files and other various archives.

How to assemble an archive from parts

If the archive is divided into parts, it is usually immediately visible; a serial number is indicated on it, for example 01, 02, 03 or part 1, part 2, part 3, etc. To assemble such an archive from parts, you need to place them in one folder and unzip the first archive by number.
If there is a regular archive without numbers, unpack it.

Alternative way to unpack using Freearc

This is where I will end this article. My main task is to explain the principle of working with archivers, and how to unpack zip on a computer, after reading the article, I am sure now you can handle any archiving program. Did the article help? Click on the social buttons and help the blog grow!

To extract files from the archive you must:

Open archive – Click the Open button and find and select the desired archive file and click OK.

Select the desired files in the archive that you want to extract and click the Extract button.

The Extract dialog box will open, in which select the folder where the extracted files will be placed (or create a new one - New Folders button) and click the Extract button in this window.

Assigning extraction parameters in the Extract dialog box.

    Skip older files – allows you to avoid overwriting new files with older ones;

    Overwrite existing files – makes it possible to write extracted files over the same ones;

Use folder files – allows you to create folders for unpacked files with the names in which they were located before packaging.

Drag-and-Drop technology is also used to extract files from the archive. To do this, select the necessary files in the archive and drag them into the desired folder using the mouse.

View file contents

To view the contents of a file, select the file and click the View button

Viewing methods:

    the editor with which this file was created (the Associated program line);

Removing files from the archive

To delete a file from an archive, you need to select this file and display its context menu, in which select the Delete command and in the window that opens, select the deletion mode: Entere Archive - all files in this archive, Selectid Files - selected files, Files - files specified by the mask.

Creating a self-extracting archive

WinZip does not create a self-extracting archive, but converts an already created archive file into a self-extracting archive (exe file).

To do this, you need to open the archive, select from the menu Actions- Make. Exe. In the WinZip Self-Extractor window that opens, in the first line you can specify or find another archive (Browse button) that you want to convert. In the second line, write down the address where you will place the converted archive or use the default address of your machine. Then click OK. A new dialog box will open, in which click the button Unzip to create this self-extracting archive and then close the dialog boxes with the button Clouse.

Creating a multi-volume archive

Multi-volume archives are needed when the archive does not fit on one floppy disk. WinZip is as good as anyone at cutting an archive into pieces. A multi-volume archive is created in the same way as a regular one, only in the Add window there is a Multiple disk Spanning list (separation into several volumes) and it is available only when the archive is created on a floppy disk.

Modes for splitting into multiple volumes:

    Automatic – as one floppy disk is full, it will require the next one;

    Automatic + wipe first disk prompt – before you start archiving, you will be asked to erase some files from the floppy disk, and then do the same as in Automatic mode;

No spanning – there will be no cutting, and when the floppy disk is full, a message indicating that the diskette is full will be displayed.

The DOS RAR program of the Ukrainian programmer Evgeniy Roshalo has been well known for many years in the country and all over the world. WinRAR is an improved version of the RAR archiver, equipped with a convenient graphical shell.

WinRAR creates archives not only of its own type (with the rar extension), but also zip. But it can also extract files from archives in ARJ, CAB, LZH, TAR, GZ, ACE, UUE formats, and can view the contents of these files. Moreover, the files arj, cab, lzh do not even require the archivers themselves.

In terms of file compression, WinRAR is significantly superior to WinZip, and in most cases, ARJ. WinRAR is capable of working at different speeds, but both at the same time are not yet achievable.

The program works not only in a Windows window, but also from the command line, like a regular DOS archiver.

WinRAR can create multi-volume, self-extracting archives and multi-volume self-extracting archives.

Thus, WinRAR is a powerful, flexible tool with a wide range of functions, almost in no way inferior to WinZip, and often even ahead of it.

The menu and help system are presented in Russian. Therefore, the purpose of the structural elements of the archiver window is clear (they are visible in the figure below) and it makes no sense to consider their purpose. The only thing I would like to add is that the toolbar buttons change depending on where you are: some are in the archive, others are outside of it.

Basic operations with archives

Creating a new archive

To create an archive, you need to select the files that will be included in the archive, and then click the button Add. In the dialog box that opens, enter the archive location address (use the button Review) and enter the name of the archive to be created (in the Archive line). Set archiving parameters: archive format (RAR or ZIP), compression method (Normal, Good, Maximum, Fast, High-Speed), update method (Add with file replacement, Add with file update, Update existing files, Synchronize archive contents).

Adding files to the archive

To add files to the archive, you need to select them and click the button Add, then in the window that opens, install the desired archive to which we add the files (Browse button) and click OK.

Removing files from the archive

To delete files from an archive, you need to open this archive, select the files to be deleted and click the button Delete on the toolbar.

Creating a multi-volume archive

Creating a multi-volume archive is carried out in the same way as a new one, but the volume size is also added to the Volume size line (1457500 for a floppy disk)

Extracting files from an archive

To extract files from an archive, you need to enter this archive and mark the files you want to extract and click the button Extract to place these files in the current folder. To place the selected files in another folder, click the button Extract to.

Converting an archive to self-extracting

To convert an archive into a self-extracting one, you need to open this archive (enter it) and press the SFX button. As a result of this command, an archive file will appear on the disk with the same name as the source archive, but with the EXE extension.
