Huawei Ascend G620S is a representative of the class of budget smartphones; it is sold in some countries under the name Honor 4 Play. In Russia, sales started in November 2014. The smartphone has good characteristics and an affordable price, but since many manufacturers are entering the niche of economy class models, it has strong competitors. What can Huawei Ascend G620S boast of? The review will tell you in detail about its characteristics, pros and cons.
Appearance
You might expect a cheap smartphone to look cheap, but here you will be pleasantly surprised. The design of Ascend G620S mobile phones is quite presentable, although it does not claim to be original.
The back cover is made of plastic with a leather-like texture. Its significant disadvantage is its noticeable thinness and fragility.
If you remove the lid, this impression only intensifies; it is possible that it may break due to frequent opening.
And under the lid you will find the much-needed slots for microSD and microSIM cards. You will also be able to see the battery, but it cannot be removed without special skills and tools.
The smartphone looks elegant due to its thinness and metallic stripes around the screen, but it also fits well in the hand thanks to the textured plastic and rounded edges. Since it is quite large (14.3 x 7.2 x 0.85 cm, weight 160 g), the manufacturer wisely moved the physical buttons (volume and unlock) to the right side, where they are easy to reach. They protrude slightly above the body, are easy to find without looking and difficult to confuse.
Screen
The Huawei Ascend G620S smartphone boasts a large 5-inch display, but its resolution is only 720 by 1280 (pixel density per inch - 294). This means that the picture is not as sharp as more expensive models with a similar screen size, but it is nevertheless quite bright and pleasant to use. Users with small hands will have to get used to its size.
The smartphone has good viewing angles, and if you increase the brightness level, it can be used in bright sunlight.
The manufacturer still prefers to place the touch buttons on the panel below the screen, although it would be more ergonomic to allocate this space under the display.

The smartphone has a fairly powerful quad-core Qualcomm processor, common among similarly priced models, operating at a frequency of 1.2 GHz. Its interesting feature is that it is not 32-bit, but 64-bit. But in reality this does not provide significant advantages for two reasons:
- The smartphone has an outdated Android 4.4 KitKat OS installed, which is not optimized for 64-bit processors;
- 1 GB of RAM is not enough to fully benefit from this.
However, the smartphone's test performance is slightly higher than that of its competitors.
But with permanent memory things are worse. The built-in volume is only 8 GB, a significant part of which (4.18 GB) is occupied by the OS. And the possibilities for increasing it are unexpectedly small - the smartphone supports memory cards up to only 32 GB in size.
One of the main advantages of this model is 4G support, which is rarely seen in the budget segment.
In addition to 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and NFC are available.
The call quality of the smartphone is quite high. The interlocutor can be heard well, and two microphones successfully cope with the noise reduction function, i.e. on the other side you will also be heard well.
Interface and performance
Since the model uses the very popular Android 4.4 OS, all functions of the smartphone are intuitive and do not require a lot of learning and getting used to.
The Ascend G620S is quite fast and swiping through screens or navigating through the application list doesn't slow it down at all. The same goes for running programs alone. But if you have several applications open at the same time, or an application is being installed in the background, then be prepared for freezes.
For most of the necessary functions (contacts, SMS, music player, etc.), the manufacturer provides the buyer with pre-installed utilities. But, since they often have less functionality or elements in Chinese, it is easier to replace them with applications downloaded from Google Play.
Battery
The Ascend G620S has a small battery capacity - only 2000 mA. This is less than its competitors, but it performs quite well in tests and everyday life. For example, after a day of active use (16 hours, several calls, half an hour of games, using applications for a long period), 19% of the charge remained. So the smartphone will only need charging overnight.
As a last resort, you can switch to Ultra Power Saving mode, which almost doubles the battery life, but at the same time blocks access to all functions except calls and SMS.
There is also a utility utility that shows which physical components or applications are currently actively consuming battery power.
As mentioned above, those who like to carry a spare battery with them are out of luck, because the “original” battery cannot be removed.

On paper, the cameras of the Huawei Ascend G620S are completely identical to those that can be found in competitors - the main 8 MP (with flash) and the front 2 MP. But often the pixels in the characteristics do not correspond to reality. So, the iPhone 6 also has an 8 megapixel camera, but if you compare the pictures taken on it and on the G620S, the difference will be obvious.
The photos are of average quality, the colors are bright, but not entirely accurate. The flash greatly whitens the picture. As a result, the result is slightly worse not only than competitors, but even one of Huawei’s smartphones – Honor 3C.
The shooting application is rich in various functions, ranging from HDR and Panorama mode to various filters. There is even an option to add a watermark.
To take a photo, you just need to press the shutter icon, just the screen, or the volume button, which in this situation replaces the physical shutter button.
The camera can shoot video in quality up to Full HD (1080 pixels). The result is quite watchable, although focus is often lost.
There are as many needs as there are people in the world. Some people want a fully charged smartphone for any price, while others want something cheaper and simpler. Still others want something in between, while others just can’t decide. Thank God that manufacturers take into account all the diversity of desires and offer us intermediate models, such as the Huawei Ascend G620S.
Classic as it is
This device is approaching the mid-price category. It is much more interesting than budget phones like Huawei Y5c, however, it does not live up to the mini-flagship Huawei P8 lite. The design of the plastic case with a metal edging around the screen is no different. It's classic.
Yes, Samsung's flagships once looked like this, but now perhaps only the lid is of interest - its texture resembles leather. It does not get dirty or scratched, unlike glossy plastic, and it looks beautiful. The cover, by the way, is removable, but the battery is built into the smartphone - for some reason it cannot be replaced. Under the cover there are slots for one SIM card and a microSD memory card.
Another nuance is that the touch buttons under the screen are painted silver and are not illuminated in the dark. This is normal for inexpensive smartphones. Overall the smartphone is nice. It is thin, light, and built to last.
Screen and “filling”
Huawei Ascend G620S is equipped with a 5-inch screen with HD resolution. If you have previously used an inexpensive smartphone like Huawei Y5c, then the quality of the display will amaze you. The picture is bright, clear, and the brightness reserve is enough to comfortably use the device in bright sunlight. At the same time, it is clear that the screen is not top-end, and you can see a better image by paying a few thousand rubles extra and buying, for example, Huawei P8 lite.
The “stuffing” of the Huawei Ascend G620S will allow you to play games like the popular Asphalt 8 races, surf the Internet comfortably, and use navigation without getting annoyed by the speed of Yandex.Maps or another navigation system. The Huawei Ascend G620S is powered by the popular 64-bit quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with a frequency of 1.2 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. These resources, in general, will be enough for several years to come, if you are not a gamer. At the same time, the hardware behaves quite sparingly in relation to the battery. With an average load, at the end of the day, your Huawei Ascend G620S will still have about 30% charge, and this is a very good indicator.
The Huawei Ascend G620S runs on Android 4.4.4, but forget your past experience with it (if you had one), since the proprietary Emotion UI 2.3 interface is installed on top of the system. It makes Android more concise, simpler, as if unloading it from the mass of elements, making an Android smartphone look like an iPhone. It’s no secret that many craftsmen install this and similar interfaces on their smartphones, because they are truly more convenient than “naked” Android.

Using budget smartphones as an example, we have already learned that a large number of megapixels does not guarantee good pictures. However, in this case, you can fully count on all eight million points!
The Huawei Ascend G620S was also equipped with good optics with f/2.0 aperture and, as the manufacturer claims, a “blue glass filter.” It is unlikely that we are talking about a blue filter, which changes the spectral composition of the light passing through it, and which only professional photographers can use correctly. Most likely, we are simply dealing with the creativity of marketers. The photos taken with the Huawei Ascend G620S are surprisingly good. The smartphone copes well with macro, does not suffer from highlights and gaps in the shadows, and does not catch glare. Verdict: The Huawei Ascend G620S camera is quite suitable for Instagram lovers.
Communication means
It's strange, but the Chinese smartphone Huawei Ascend G620S only supports one SIM card! But is there a tragedy in this? Not at all. Despite the fact that it is very convenient to have two phone numbers at hand, for many there is no need for such an option. So why overpay for it?
The main thing is that this, in general, inexpensive device supports high-speed LTE networks and is capable of downloading data from the Internet at speeds of up to 150 Mbit/s! Simply put, you can ride a minibus and watch videos on YouTube if conditions allow it. Well, let's probably start with the fact that this is Hodor Honor, and not Huawei. That is, of course Huawei, but...
In general, Huawei now produces smartphones under 2 brands. Honor - inexpensive smartphones for the mass market. Huawei and its Ascend lineup are top-end smartphones, so to speak “premium”. Although in Russia one can still recall the not-so-pleasant pronunciation of the Huawei brand, this is far from the main reason. In China, by the way, Honor has long been sold as an independent brand. Rumor has it that there are rumors about the division of the company and the allocation of separate design and development centers, but for now Honor is just an inscription.
The first device under the Honor brand was Honor 6 - a very interesting and attractive device, which has rightfully become one of the leaders in its segment. Appearance and ergonomics
It would be difficult to call Honor 4 Play stylish. Yes, in our time there is little that can stand out, because on the front part the screen occupies a large area, so all that remains is the back cover and the edges of the smartphone.
Considering the lack of inscriptions on the front of the smartphone, it can easily be confused with some kind of Flu or Exp. But the back part is pleasing - the back cover is made to look like leather, even though it is 146 percent plastic. It looks really nice and even expensive, and the absence of any inscriptions and icons other than Honor is also a plus.
In general, the smartphone makes a calm impression, with a margin of “pretty”. On the front part there are 3 control buttons, and in their “non-standard” design, like Alcatel (TCL), some Lenovo and other Asian manufacturers. To the left of the central button is “Back”, and to the right is “Menu”. You have to get used to it, but at first it’s annoying... 
Also above the screen we see a selfie camera and a voice speaker. There is also a light sensor, proximity sensor and an alert LED.
The diode is bright and clearly visible, lights up when charging and blinks when receiving notifications. 
On the back cover there is a camera, a flash and a slot for a ringing speaker. Moreover, the back cover is slightly rounded, that is, the smartphone is slightly thicker in the center than at the edges. This also allows you to achieve a more comfortable “grip” of the smartphone. 
The left side is pristine, the keys are located on the right. The power button and volume control keys are located so that when grabbed with either hand, they are right under your finger.

By the way, there is also an inscription on it only about Honor and no Huawei for you! Under the back cover we see 2 slots for microSIM, the first one works in 2G/3G/4G networks, and the second one only in 2G. There is also a slot for microSD.
The smartphone weighs 160 grams, so it can’t be called light, but it fits comfortably in one hand. The build quality does not raise any questions, there are no squeaks from the back cover, although time does not spare anyone. No backlash was also noticed.

A 5-inch screen with HD resolution is used. The screen is covered with glass, but it was not possible to find information about the manufacturer. The screen is made using IPS technology and, in principle, is of very, very good quality. True, it “yellows” a little, but this is only visible in comparison with other screens. The colors are bright and rich, in the sun at maximum brightness you can see something on the screen, this is a plus. Supports 10 touches, sensitivity is very high.
Moreover, the screen has a certain “super-sensitive layer” that allows you to work with smartphone while wearing gloves!. In the conditions of the Russian winter it is a very useful thing.

The 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor (MSM8916) is used, this is one of the new solutions. There is no sense from 64 bits in Android yet, however, in front of “marketing value” you can already put “+”. The operating frequency is 1.2 GHz, the processor is quad-core, Adreno 306 is responsible for graphics. In general, this is a quite productive solution and is intended for the mid-price segment. The processor is more than enough for everyday tasks. But the RAM is 1 GB, there are no other options, but I would like more, given the “gluttony” of modern applications. In principle, at this price of the phone, this is a normal number, which again will be enough for 90 percent of users.The phone does not slow down and works very quickly, it launches and successfully plays even quite complex games like Aphalt 8, GTA San Andreas and others. The graphics are not the best, sometimes top-end games have stutters, but the phone is not a top-end gaming solution either.

Communications and communication.
The smartphone supports 2 micro SIM cards, both work simultaneously (one radio module). One slot supports only GSM networks (2G), but the second slot supports LTE, WCDMA and GSM. LTE operates in frequencies B1/B3 for FDD-LTE and B41 for TD-LTE. In Moscow, MTS easily caught the 4G network in the B3 standard (LTE 1800), which was built only in December, although with standard low speeds for “eggs” (in comparison with Megafon-Iota, of course).
Megafon has an LTE 1800 (B3) network, but very soon they promise to launch it in the Moscow region, but nothing has been heard about Beeline... In the regions of the Russian Federation, you need to look at the data of operators separately, whether there is a B3 network or it is in the plans.
The rest is standard - WiFi, BlueTooth 4.0... There are no problems with communication, the phone holds the network very confidently, only when 4G is turned on the signal can “jump” and break the connection, but this is a feature of this range, there are only a few towers in Moscow...
GPS
Since a chip from Qualcomm is used, everything is fine with navigation. Moreover, the Chinese phone was much more willing to hook up to GLONASS satellites than GPS, and also hooked up to a couple of BeiDou satellites. In general, the Honor 4 Play navigator can be easily replaced.
Battery
The battery is built-in, you can’t just change it if something happens. What’s interesting is that the battery has passive cooling... I haven’t seen this for a long time)In general, the battery performed more than worthy; for 5 inches and quite active use, the phone lived quietly for 2 days and even half past two. Antutu Tester only confirms this. This is optimization! The phone easily lasts for 3 days of average activity; in active mode, by the end of the day it will still have 20-30 percent battery. Although, again, the confidence in receiving the 4G network decides.
To manage the battery and applications that drain it, there is its own interface, which can really increase the life of the battery.
Camera
The main camera uses a module of “only” 8 megapixels with backlight technology and flash. There are not many megapixels, but Huawei did a good job on the camera and flash work - the phone takes surprisingly decent photos, head and shoulders above the ZTE Red Bull, for example. Sometimes there is not enough detail, in the dark the pictures are very blurry and there is clearly not enough aperture, but you can get a good shot. What’s especially pleasing is that the auto mode here is really smart and almost always makes the best choice of exposure and light sensitivity. Sometimes it’s better to turn off the flash manually.Photo examples
Moreover, the camera really has a lot of different settings, so you can enable autofocus in motion, focus on the entire frame, tracking faces... I would still like better detail, but overall the camera was a pleasant surprise.

The smartphone operates on the Android 4.4.4 OS, and there is definitely no doubt about the update to Android 5.0 - the update will be official. The system runs Huawei's own shell - EMUI version 2.3. I must say, I saw this shell from Huawei back in version 1.x on the Huawei Ascend P6 and then it didn’t make a splash, but then I appreciated the beauty of the firmware. It turned out to be very, very convenient and literally crammed with all sorts of tricks. In my personal ratings of convenient firmware, EMUI occupies a worthy place at the level of Flyme OS, MIUI, LeWa and others like them. It will be interesting to look at EMUI 3.0 in the final version (the beta is already online). You can review EMUI 2.3 and screenshots of the upcoming EMUI 3.0.
A noticeable disadvantage of the smartphone is the lack of Google services in the firmware, that is, the smartphone user will most likely have to download the Google services that he needs himself. This is done quite simply, through the Huawei App Market installed on the smartphone, but the very need to do some manipulations to install applications and synchronize contacts is not encouraging...

Among the “standard” functions of the firmware are control of gestures and double taps and shakes, but there are also a number of features of this smartphone. For example, very relevant for Russia - operation with gloves!!!
In the video review you can see this in more detail, the function really works. The screen will not react to inanimate objects (styli, cards, etc.), but it recognizes any gloves with a bang (rag, natural and artificial leather).
Another small but nice feature is the automatic change of pictures on the screensaver and on the desktop... Every time there is something new, even the built-in wallpapers in the smartphone are very nice and I want to get them into other phones...
You can also change and expand the notification menu, the smartphone has automatic notifications about which application consumes a lot of energy with a suggestion to close it (and the smartphone lasts a really long time!), a built-in application security system with blocking of certain functions... Even the simplest “Mirror” application - produces a “Wow!” effect. It fogs up and you can write and draw on the smartphone screen))

The smartphone is quite loud, although there is only one speaker, its quality is excellent. The sound quality in the headphones is average, there are no revelations here. The interlocutor hears me perfectly, as do I him, I even reduced the volume of the voice speaker. The smartphone has an over-the-air update function, but for some reason the smartphone did not want to update itself to the latest firmware, so I had to transfer the file to the memory card myself.
I will also note the abundance of Chinese programs, which, however, are very easily removed from the smartphone and do not interfere with life at all.
During the month of use, the smartphone rebooted only once and has no connection problems at all. The same goes for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the sensitivity is high, there are no problems with operation.

The Huawei Ascend G620S, priced at around $125, is the latest iteration of the updated vision of the ideal budget phone. The model is equipped with a decent 5-inch screen, 4G and a 64-bit processor. For its price, the smartphone is not bad at all. But I would like to see it not so stripped down and deliberately cheap. The phone runs an older version of Huawei's UI, which makes the Ascend G620S somewhat outdated.
Design
The Huawei Ascend G620S is similar to Samsung phones that were released before the company started making really good models. You can't expect much from a device that costs less than $125. It is made of plastic with a leather-like texture on the back panel.
The G620S comes in black and white variants, and the latter has a silver finish and soft keys. The leather texture is quite fine, with a fine grain and really attracts attention. The phone still feels cheap, although many will like this solution more than the usual gloss of other budget devices.
It's funny to see how big screens have started to appear on cheaper models, and the G620S has one no less than high-end smartphones like the Galaxy S6. It appears even larger due to the wide display bezel and thickness. The buttons and soft keys are easy to reach. An obvious drawback of the model is the lack of backlighting for the soft keys. These are just shiny silver inserts.
The Huawei Ascend G620S doesn't offer all the benefits of a removable plastic cover. There's a micro-SD card slot that makes it easy to add 8GB of internal storage, but the battery can't be replaced. It is held in place by a metal plate.
The main elements of equipment more or less correspond to the price. There is 4G and regular wireless connectivity. There is no fast Wi-Fi, IR transmitter and other additional features. But there is NFC, which many budget rivals lack.
Display
You can forgive the lack of additional connections if the result is a great screen. And the Huawei Ascend G620S has exactly that, although it is not the best in its class. This is a 5-inch display with a resolution of 720p, quite clear, but still far from the Retina standard. The smartphone offers a pixel density of 294 dpi, which leaves some grain in the image.
But this is normal, it won’t be long before there are phones with 1080p resolution for less than $100-120. For those who have previously used a lower-resolution smartphone, this will seem like a huge step forward. Where Huawei falls short is in screen technology, which is less advanced than the best models.
The display layer is too far from the display surface. This reduces contrast and visibility outdoors. The Ascend G620S struggles with very bright sunlight. In more expensive screens, several layers are combined and have no air gaps, which has improved their performance.
The light sensor allows the smartphone to select the appropriate backlight brightness.
Huawei Ascend G620S: software review
Unfortunately, the installed software disappointed some phone owners. Firstly, the G620S runs on the outdated Android 4.4.4 operating system. To make matters worse, the old version 2.3 of Huawei's Emotion UI is installed, which actually defines the look and feel of the smartphone more than the operating system core.
The basic layout of the bootloader is the same as the newer version, but there is no separate application menu. There are only a few desktops, just like the iPhone. This means that when you install an application, it will simply appear on one of your desktops. At first, when a user downloads many new applications, it becomes annoying. Icons can be grouped into folders and the number of desktops can be reduced.
But the outdated software is far inferior to, for example, the Motorola Moto G, although it does offer some useful features. Themes allow you to completely change the appearance of your phone, including wallpaper and icons. The default theme is one of the best, but there are many additional ones that can be downloaded using the corresponding application.
How to remove low-quality software
The smartphone is a little overloaded with unnecessary Gameloft applications that clutter up the phone's already small memory. Of the 8 GB, only half is available. However, owners have the opportunity to rid their Huawei Ascend G620S of unnecessary junk. To do this, w3bsit3-dns.com advises unlocking the bootloader and gaining root user rights. The access code can be obtained by sending a letter to the manufacturer's email with the serial number, IMEI 1, product code and model name. Unblocking is done using the ADB program. Root user rights will be provided by the CWMRecovery application.
Performance
The smartphone performs well thanks to the 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor supported by 1GB RAM. Despite the fact that the Huawei Ascend G620S has low specifications, they are excellent for a budget phone. Aside from some UI bugs, the G620S largely runs smoothly, especially once the owner gets the hang of using the device. Sometimes there are delays, but very minor.
