For testing, we receive devices that can be divided into two classes: “branded” (developed by well-known large manufacturers) and “packet” (oriented to receive a package of programs from a specific broadcast provider). Television presented for testing satellite receiver DRS-5001 is a new terminal in the “package” line of devices designed primarily for receiving programs from the Tricolor TV digital package. The manufacturer of this product - Downridge Select Limited (Hong Kong, China) - based the development technical solutions, implemented in the DRE-5000 receiver, already known on Russian market. The electrical circuit of the prototype has undergone changes that affected:
high-frequency receiving part (tuner unit);
embedded system decoder conditional access DRE Crypt.
The DRS-5001 receiver supports an expanded set of user functions, available to the subscriber"Tricolor TV" package. With support for Common Interface compatible devices, the unit can be used to receive other MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 open source and encoded broadcasts.

Design and circuitry
The design and proportions of the DRS-5001 receiver exactly repeat the familiar features of its predecessor. It’s easy to guess whether a device belongs to a class budget models.
The receiver has a compact silver body. The number of elements located on the front panel is minimal:
mode switching button - working/standby;
switch buttons channels;
TV/R switch button.
A four-digit yellow-orange segment display is used for display. In operating mode, the display shows the number of the channel being viewed, in standby mode - current time. Additional icon segments on the display indicate the presence of a signal on the selected channel, the transition to receiving a radio channel, or the terminal being in standby mode. Behind the hinged front panel cover is the CI slot.
A set of interface connectors allows you to connect the necessary external equipment. On the rear panel of the receiver are located:
two F-type sockets LNB IN and loop output LNB OUT;
two EuroScart connectors (TV and AUX);
audio outputs R/L and VIDEO (RCA type);
optical digital audio output S/PDIF;
input for connecting an terrestrial TV antenna RF IN and output of a UHF modulator for connecting a TV using the RF OUT frequency;
RS-232 data port connector;
power switch.
The electrical circuit of the DRS-5001 receiver is located on several boards:
power unit;
motherboard. Circuit design motherboard, basically the same as the DRE-5000 receiver ( CPU STI 5518, configuration and size of memory chips). The device presented for testing is equipped with the EARDA EDS-1547FF1B+ tuner unit. The STV0288 chip is used as a QPSK demodulator. This chip has lower power consumption compared to the previously used STV0299 demodulator, a larger range of received signal flow rates;
DRE Crypt hardware decoder. Judging by appearance(pictured), the hardware decoder of the tested receiver has a different electrical diagram and a set of components in comparison with the same unit used in the DRE-4000/DRE-5000 receivers;
front panel indication and switching board.
Thanks to the horizontal layout of the RF modulator tuner block and the decoder board, the DRS-5001 receiver is housed in a relatively low cabinet.
The control circuit for the SCART connectors of the device under test is designed for the possibility of transit switching of electrical signals supplied to the AUX interface. The receiver supports broadcasting input and output signals through this connector for all video formats: composite, component, matrixed (RGB). Various audio-video equipment (VCR, DVD player, game console).
The DRS-5001 receiver is equipped with a 37-button remote control of the same design as the DRE-5000 receiver. The operation of remote control commands that call special services for subscribers of the Tricolor TV package (“TV Chat” and “TV Mail”) is supported. These services are called by the “*” and “#” buttons, respectively.
Specifications of the tested device are given in Table 1.

System settings and channel search
The OSD configuration interface of the DRS-5001 receiver is almost the same as that of the DRE-5000. Procedure initial setup simplified by using a Wizard installation. Values system parameters This mode, set by default, allows you to quickly configure the DRS-5001 receiver to receive channels from the Tricolor TV package (Eutelsat W4 satellite, 36° East).
Menu system settings allows you to determine:
date and time. The clock can be synchronized automatically (by satellite) or manual mode. The default offset is +3 hours;
menu language. Supports OSD display in four European languages: Russian, English, German and French;
primary and secondary audio languages (choice of 62 languages);
video output mode. Through the TV SCART connector of the receiver, the video signal can be output in composite, component (YUV), S-Video and RGB format. Mode supported automatic switching between 4:3 and 16:9 display formats. This function was tested when viewing programs from the Kinopokaz channel of the Tricolor TV package (some films on this channel are broadcast in widescreen);
audio output format. It is possible to manually turn on the S/PDIF output;
Display settings (display format, OSD transparency level, display time and use of screen storage function);
conditions of “parental” access. You can select the level of viewing age restriction (from 4 to 18 years old in steps of 1) or mode full access;
event timers. You can set up to 32 non-overlapping timers. The event reservation service (timer activation) via EPG is supported.
BY new platform contains a number of additions to basic functions receiver interface DRE-5000:1. The item “Search for Tricolor TV channels” has appeared in the main menu. When this function is called, the current list of channels broadcast in the Tricolor TV package is updated. Using this service does not violate the previously selected configuration of user settings and channel lists of other packages saved in the receiver’s memory.2. Added functions for user services for Tricolor TV subscribers: “TV Chat” and “TV Mail”. “TV Chat” was tested on the channels “Veseloye TV” and “Teletravel”.
3. The “DRE Info” item has been added to the conditional access menu. Using this menu, a Tricolor TV subscriber can obtain information about the classes and validity periods of the subscription.
The DRS-5001 receiver allows the use of various receiving antenna systems:
fixed (one or more, switched by a DiSEqC switch). The use of DiSEqC 1.0 and DiSEqC 1.1 switching protocols is supported;
motorized, controlled by DiSEqC 1.2 or USALS positioner. The receiver allows you to produce automatic search signal in positioner setting mode. The antenna moves until it is detected and captured digital signal with the specified parameters. Testing has shown that the new software eliminates problems associated with the loss of settings for satellites of a motorized system.
In mode quick setup By default, a simple fixed receiving system is used: a converter with a local oscillator frequency of 10750 MHz, receiving signals in circular polarization.
Support for various channel search modes, combined with the ability to use various antenna system configurations, allows us to consider the DRS-5001 receiver as a universal device. The preset list of satellites contains an updated and current list of transponders and broadcast parameters for various packages at the time of testing. Support for four types of automatic search (fast, full, network, Tricolor TV) greatly simplifies setting up the receiver. Testing has shown that the DRS-5001 receiver can be used to receive both low-speed and high-speed digital packages with a range of flow rates from 2.2 to 45 Msym/s. It turned out, however, that the DRS-5001 receiver sometimes did a poor job of detecting signals from some broadcast packets. This problem was discovered in the manual and automatic search modes for packets broadcast from various satellites. In some cases, the time required to “lock” the receiver on such a broadcast exceeds several minutes. If, nevertheless, in the end, the receiver detected the signal included in such a package, then when viewing channels the problem manifested itself again: after switching or when switching to operating mode, there was no signal. Any connection between this effect and the parameters of the received signal (frequency, value symbol rate and FEC) could not be detected. We assume that the problem occurs due to insufficiently correct interaction between the receiver's motherboard and the new tuner unit.

Conditional access
The DRS-5001 terminal has two built-in conditional access systems:
hardware and software COURT DRE Crypt;
BISS software descrambler.
The operation of the DRE Crypt conditional access system of the DRS-5001 receiver was tested in the channel viewing mode of the Tricolor TV package. To connect to viewing, the following was done:
equipment registration (DRE ID terminal);
activation of a subscription card for paid channels(card “Start”).
There were no problems registering or activating the subscription. The receiver was configured to receive Tricolor TV channels and included in the paid package channel viewing mode. However, after receiving confirmation of activation of the subscription card, the channel was not decoded for a long time (about 4 hours), and the message “Scrambled channel (DRE)” was displayed on the screen. Viewing became possible only after switching to another channel. Similar problem was sometimes observed after the receiver was transferred from standby mode to working mode after a short (1-2 hour) shutdown interval. Another drawback that we noticed during testing is the significant switching time when viewing between encoded channels of the Tricolor TV package, sometimes reaching 5-7 seconds. While watching the selected channel, decoding was stable.
The BISS software descrambler supports Mode 1 conditional access mode. The values of seven keys can be entered into the receiver's memory.
To test the operation of the built-in BISS descrambler, the ability to view the Stolichnoe TV channel (Express-AM22, 53° East) was checked. To test the CI interface, various types of CAM modules and original access cards were used paid packages and channels “NTV-Plus” (Eutelsat W4, 36° east) and “Orion Express” (“Express-AM2”, 80° east). The time it takes to “open” a channel when switching between encoded and open channels small (about 1-2 s).
The advantages of the device presented for testing include the possibility of sharing it with MPEG-4/MPEG-2 transcoding CI modules Viaccess Neotion Pocket NP4 and MPEG4/MPEG2 DRE Crypt CAM. Using these modules, it was possible to decode MPEG-4 broadcasts of the GPKS packet from the Express-AM1 satellite, 40° East. The switching time between MPEG-4 channels was about 3 s.
Results of checking the compatibility of the DRS-5001 receiver with various types The CAMs are shown in Table 2. During this testing, no significant problems were identified.

Service functions
The DRS-5001 receiver supports a wide range of information service functions:
multi-day extended EPG. The EPG information of the Tricolor TV, NTV-Plus and Orion-Express packages is displayed correctly;
certificate of broadcast (channel name, presence of tele-text services, subtitles, panoramic soundtrack, information about the current transmission). In our opinion, the operation of the indicator displaying the level of the received signal has been improved (compared to the DRE-5000), the readings of which have become more reliable;
teletext. Support for OSD and VBI teletext included. The built-in teletext decoder allows you to display teletext using, among other things, characters from national alphabets. However, when receiving some channels this function does not work correctly (teletext service in the GPKS package from the Express-AM1 satellite, 40° East);
subtitles. The terminal supports processing of TTX and DVB subtitles. The software allows you to select the type of subtitles displayed on the screen (DVB or TTX subtitles). The function works correctly on various channels whose broadcasts are accompanied by subtitles.
The OSD menu allows you to organize channel lists:
sorting the watch list. The current channel list displayed on the screen can be sorted alphabetically. Possibility provided quick transition inside an ordered list and switching the alphabet layout (four language options from the same set as the menu languages);
creating favorite channel lists. In total, the user can create up to 32 favorite lists. Thanks to the use of user-defined selection filters, the process of creating such lists is greatly simplified;
channel list editor (operations of deleting, moving, renaming, blocking). The editable list (“TV” or “Radio”) is displayed in the background full screen image channel being watched.

Testing of the DRS-5001 receiver showed that, despite the presence of problems, the device provides the ability to view channels of the Tricolor TV package and can be used to receive other paid and open source software.

The editors express their gratitude to the General Satellite Corporation (Russia) for providing the DRS-5001 receiver for testing.

- (not official!) - This software is developed on the basis of the official 3.4.369 (the one that will flow from the satellite 07.10.13.) The main difference between this firmware is not shown advertising banners when changing channels. Works stably.

Features of this firmware:

    2 - the submenu search for tricolor TV channels has been removed from the main menu (but it is still available in the menu >> settings >> automatic search >> search type >> tricolor TV) or when initial installation(reset to factory settings)

    3 - when entering the main menu or the game menu, the picture does not disappear!

    4 - in the main nenyu the frills on the side were removed (in my opinion it was not harmonious :))

    5 - exit from the channel list is organized by double click OK buttons (exactly the same as it is organized in 99% of all tuners)

    6 - when you pressed the game button, a swastika was displayed, searching for tricolor channels is now like a proper swastika of the game :)

    7 - the algorithm of the EPG menu has been changed - now it is much more convenient (everything can be done with just one button ok)

    8 - in the Tetris menu the ok and up buttons have swapped places

    9 - possible, but not guaranteed!!! The cause of freezes in receivers with 11 series modules has been eliminated.

    10 - the firmware has already collected the current channels as of 10/05/2013, all garbage has been removed!!!

Past releases

The procedure is quite simple and does not require special skills from subscribers; you just need to follow the instructions for replacing the software from the info channel. The update process takes some time and you need to be patient and wait for it to finish. But despite all the warnings, some users do not wait for the software update process to complete and, as a result, the receiver stops working.

Practice shows that in very rare cases, even after waiting for the software update to complete, the receiver may not turn on after a reboot. There is only one diagnosis - a software update failure.

But don't despair. You can fix this yourself and at home, if you have a computer or another similar working receiver at hand. Below is how to do this. Helps in 99% of cases of unsuccessful software update from satellite.

Software update from a computer.
