What does touch id mean on iPhone? If Touch ID does not work on iPhone or iPad: how to deal with the problem

Touch ID - what is it and how to use the technology? This question is sooner or later asked by owners of Apple equipment.

Modem mode on iPhone 6 and iPhone 7: how to enable and configure – step-by-step instructions 2017

Benefits of technology

Among the benefits that Touch ID provides are:

  • high response speed due to a minimum number of operations;
  • complete confidentiality of important information, access to which can only be obtained by the owner of the device;
  • the ability to authorize the user in a number of applications. Today, many programs support working with technology. For example, 1Password password storage, DayOne diary service and Documents file manager;
  • using mobile gadgets instead of bank cards when paying for purchases.

Rice. 2. Pay for your purchase using your iPhone.

Setting up Touch ID

The technology does not provide the user with the ability to quickly enable all its functions - it is not activated on a new, just purchased phone.

And in order to perform the initial setup of a mobile phone or tablet, you should follow certain steps:

  1. Wipe the Home button and your fingers to avoid distorting your fingerprints during the identification process;
  2. Enter a password that can be used if you cannot unlock your device using Touch ID for some reason. The password request occurs 2 days after the last unlocking occurred;
  3. Taking the device in the same way as when normally using a smartphone or tablet, place your finger on the Home button;
  4. Keeping your hand in the same position, wait for a slight vibration of the device or sound, which is a signal that the first stage of setup has completed.

After this, the gadget can only be unlocked by the person who carried out the setup.

Access can be obtained by waking up the smartphone or tablet from sleep mode (by pressing one of the buttons on the body) and placing your finger on the sensor.

Rice. 3. To access your iPhone, just press the Home button with your finger

Authorization in services

Identification in services and programs using Touch ID is configured as follows:

  1. The smartphone (tablet) settings section opens;
  2. Select the item “Touch ID and password”;
  3. The sub-item “iTunes Store, App Store” is activated.

After this, the iOS operating system downloads the necessary add-ons to the device and notifies you of the need for additional authorization.

The fingerprint identification procedure is provided separately for each of the applications that you will use Touch ID to log into.

Although it will take less time to set up. By the way, you can read on our website how to distribute the Internet from your phone.

Problems with use

Despite the fact that access technology makes their use more convenient, sometimes problems arise with logging into the operating system.

There are only three main reasons for problems:

  • The fingertip or the button itself is dirty. The issue can be resolved by thoroughly cleaning the surface of the sensor and hands;
  • software problems. To avoid them, authorization should be provided using the image of two fingers at once. If this could not be done before the malfunction occurred, the situation is corrected by sending the device to service for flashing;
  • Factory defects are not a very common reason, but they do occur. A sign of a problem is a complete lack of response to the touch of a finger on the Home button and the inability to restart the smartphone. In this case, the phone also needs to be taken to a service center.

Rice. 4. A dirty button is one of the reasons for incorrect scanning.

Problems with setting up the technology are compensated by its capabilities. Such as speed and ease of use, optimization of payment processes and no need to remember a password. And problems occur quite rarely.

How to improve Touch ID performance

This option is present in most Apple devices starting from the seventh generation, but not many users know how to properly configure the technology and solve problems that arise with it.

Features of working with technology

You can prevent problems using Touch ID technology and a biometric sensor by following certain requirements.

First of all, this concerns the settings of the sensor, which cannot always perceive prints applied at a different angle or not completely.

Apply your finger several times by twirling it over the surface of the Home button. In addition, the technology allows you to store 5 prints in memory at once.

Therefore, the owner can remember, for example, both thumbs and index fingers, and one more - for example, the ring or little finger.

As a result, the efficiency of fingerprint scanning increases by approximately 1.5 times.

You should also carry out additional settings - the so-called “training” of Touch ID:

  • Open system security settings;
  • Enter user password;
  • Take turns placing your fingers on the surface of the sensor;
  • Perform the procedure several times, thus increasing the scanning accuracy.

Another way is to deliberately place fingerprints at incorrect angles - ones that are unlikely to be used when unlocking.

In this case, you should hold your smartphone or tablet in your hand as naturally as possible, and not trying to get the perfect image of the drawing.

In addition, during the Touch ID setup process, you should touch not only the sensor, but also the metal ring.

This also allows you to increase the likelihood of recognizing a finger, especially one applied quickly and briefly.

Rice. 5. When setting up the Touch ID option, you need to hold the smartphone naturally

conclusions

The use of Touch ID technology is one of the best ways to protect information - because, unlike a password or even a graphic code, fingerprints cannot be stolen or forged.

And, thanks to the configuration features, the user can make logging in much more convenient and faster. And subsequently choose devices that also use biometric services with fingerprint verification for access - after all, following Apple, other companies are beginning to actively use the technology.

What is Touch ID: features and benefits of using technology

Touch ID is the official name of the fingerprint reader found on the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones, as well as the iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4, iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro tablets. Apple claims that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models have a newer version of Touch ID, and on forums users claim that Touch ID often does not work, both “old” and new.

Touch ID is, of course, a useful solution, not only from a marketing point of view, but also from a purely practical one.

Users can use it to unlock their iPhone and iPad, log into accounts in various online services, and even pay for purchases via Apple Pay.

But only if Touch ID works properly. But, unfortunately, like any other electronics, this one is also capricious sometimes. Therefore, let's figure it out.

To begin with, we note that if problems with Touch ID on your Apple device began after a recent update of its operating system to iOS 9 and/or even newer versions, then most likely you may need a downgrade (i.e. rolling back the system to the previous one) version), or, if the problems are not so critical, then it is better to wait for the next update.

You can try to figure out other problems with the fingerprint scanner in iPhones from 5s and newer, as well as in iPads mini 3, mini 4, Pro and Air 2, so to speak, on your own and even at home. Fortunately, there are not very many such problems, and ways to eliminate them are already known. So if:

Touch ID doesn't work - crash

If Touch ID malfunctions, it is recommended to deal with this problem by simply reconfiguring it. In other words, you need to re-teach your iPhone (or iPad) to recognize your fingerprint. Since the advent of scanners, Apple has regularly updated their software so that users’ smartphones and tablets remember their owners’ “fingers” longer and better.

Radical optimization seems to have been carried out back in iOS 8, but, as practice shows, if you don’t refresh the fingerprint, then over time (from a month or longer) Touch ID fails one way or another, but it happens. The reasons can be very different, but, as a rule, they are purely cosmetic in nature: slight “wear and tear” of the fingerprint itself, dry skin of the finger, etc.

Therefore, if Touch ID suddenly fails, then first update the fingerprint in the memory of your smartphone or tablet. But first, you should carefully wipe the surface of the scanner and wash your hands. Next we go to “ Settings ", then - in " Touch ID and passcode ". We remove old fingerprints by swiping across the screen from right to left. After that we tap “ Add a fingerprint "and repeat the standard procedure for entering a fingerprint according to the instructions.

Touch ID doesn't work in the App Store

This is also a noticeable problem. Most often, the reason that the scanner stops working with the App Store is also a cosmetic factor, but often the problem occurs due to software malfunctions. Some users complain that with iOS 8.3 Touch ID is simply not displayed in the App Store.

In such and similar cases, we do the following:

  • click " Settings » -> « Touch ID and passcode «;
  • In chapter " Using Touch ID » disable « App Store, iTunes Store «;
  • reboot iPhone (or iPad);
  • back to again “Settings” -> “Touch ID and password” and turn on " App Store, iTunes Store «.

After this, the Touch ID bug in the App Store should resolve itself. We also remind you that if you have not purchased anything from the App Store within 24 hours, the system will require a password at the entrance.

Touch ID doesn't work at all

Of course, there is also a possibility that the fingerprint scanner has failed. Although users complain about such breakdowns relatively rarely. If, after updating the fingerprint, Touch ID does not work properly, then you can try a “hard reset” by first creating a backup. If the problem is software in nature, then a hard reboot should fix it. Otherwise, you will have to visit a service center, since it is unlikely to be possible without qualified diagnostics.

Touch ID does not work in winter or cold

Statistics show that in low temperatures the fingerprint scanner in iPhone and iPad fails more often. The problem, again, in most cases has a simple explanation. The fact is that in cold weather the papillary pattern of the fingers changes. It is difficult to notice these changes with the naked eye, but Touch ID notices them and begins to fail. As you probably already guessed, the problem is also cured by updating the fingerprint. But you can do it even simpler and enter a special “winter” fingerprint into the device’s memory, i.e. scan the finger pattern immediately from the cold. True, they say that both methods only partially solve the problem, but it’s still worth a try.

Touch ID doesn't work when it's dirty or wet

Well, there’s not much to explain here. It is clear that moisture or dirt (whether on the skin of the finger or on the surface of the scanner) is very effective in preventing any fingerprint from being scanned. Therefore, if the scanner contains excess wet and/or dirty substances, it is better to wipe it with a dry, clean cloth. And you need to wash your finger (you can even wash it with your hands). However, you shouldn’t overdo it with water, because if you keep your hands in water for a long time, the fingertips will wrinkle and the papillary pattern will temporarily change. Apple claims that in the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus Touch ID works better with wet skin, but the manufacturer still does not recommend using the scanner with wet hands.

Greetings! The article is dedicated to the upcoming New Year holidays, and at any other time, I think the information will be quite relevant and useful. Why did this instruction appear at all? The thing is that now on the market there are simply a lot of offers for selling iPhones with a non-working Apple ID fingerprint sensor. No, seriously, not only the entire Internet is littered with such devices, but also numerous “real” points of sale.

And the best thing about this whole situation is the price. Oh yeah! Everything is very good here. After all, for such a seemingly insignificant malfunction (and a non-functioning scanner is a breakdown), a fairly large discount is offered on the iPhone itself. Why not take it? Let's figure out together why you don't need to take it...

What usually sells:

  1. iPhone (any model) with a non-functional fingerprint scanner.
  2. The price for it is less (sometimes significantly) than for a similar product only with a functioning sensor.
  3. The seller assures that this is a new and absolutely normal iPhone - it’s just refurbished (REF).

And because of the third point, confusion begins, because many have heard that Apple is releasing refurbished devices onto the market. And this is true, only they have nothing to do with an iPhone with a broken finger sensor...

iPhone without Touch ID - officially refurbished device or not?

No no and one more time no. Officially refurbished iPhones, the so-called “like new” ones, are fully functional devices. Everything works for them - from the battery to the notorious fingerprint sensor. They are produced at the Apple factory, tested, have a one-year warranty (and it is two years) and are supplied through official sales channels to dealers for sale. In general, everything is “OK” with them. I have already written about such devices - in the comments there is a lot of interesting information directly on the topic of this article.

Important! On a new original, real, factory (call it what you want) iPhone, the fingerprint sensor will always work. Always. If during the sale it is stated that the device is new and from the factory, but the scanner does not work, they are lying to you.

But iPhones without Touch ID (also supposedly officially restored) are a completely different story. Where, and most importantly, what are they collected from? It’s very difficult to find out specifically and for certain, but I’ll tell you in general terms now.

iPhone with a non-working scanner - what is it and where does it come from?

So, we found out that such devices are not produced by Apple, so where do they come from? Everything is very simple, these are ordinary used gadgets, only assembled from several devices. So to speak, “restored” by various craftsmen. A little more detail, using an example:

You have several iPhones with different breakdowns - the display of one does not work, the second is completely flooded with water, the third is fine, “only” the motherboard is broken. You take all three, combine them, buy spare parts from the Chinese - you have a “refurbished” iPhone.

It is clear that options are possible, but in general terms this is exactly what it looks like.

Why is the fingerprint scanner not working on these iPhones, is it difficult for the Chinese to fix it? Yes, it’s hard, and this is due to this:

The motherboard and the Home button (where the sensor is located) for one specific iPhone (the official one coming out of the factory) are a single whole. If you substitute a button from another phone, the sensor stops working. This is done so that no one can hack your iPhone simply by connecting another button to it. Safety and protection come first!

This connection can only be “broken” at the Apple factory, which is what they do when producing officially refurbished iPhones - where, I repeat, absolutely everything works.

Pros and cons of an iPhone with a broken Touch ID – can you buy it?

If you have not yet decided whether to buy such a device or not, then here is a list of the positive and negative aspects of such an event. Let's start with the cons. So, if the scanner does not work, it means:

  • What exactly the iPhone was disassembled is unknown by whom and how.
  • It is also assembled from something unknown - spare parts can be either original or “Chinese”.
  • Considering the two previous points, even if everything works in it now (except for the sensor), it is still a time bomb - any component of such an iPhone can malfunction at any time and stop working.
  • Inability to use Apple services based on a fingerprint (the same Apple Pay). And in general, the security of your personal data is at great risk.

Are there any advantages? Yes, there are two of them:

  • Price – the cost of an iPhone with a defective scanner is always less (otherwise who will buy them?).
  • You may be lucky and come across a successful device (more likely no than yes).

I hope that now everyone should have the right opinion about the advisability of buying an iPhone with a non-functioning Touch ID sensor. If it doesn’t work out, then I’ll give you a hint: buying such a device is a very big lottery with a minimal chance of winning, but with a huge opportunity to simply throw away money.

Updated! As I wrote, buying an iPhone without Touch ID is a big gamble. In my opinion there is no point in playing it. Moreover, you can save money when buying a normal iPhone. How? Instructions:

  1. Among the stores you know, we find one where the price of an iPhone is cheaper and the refund on your purchase is higher.
  2. Victory.

That's all - enjoy the phone and the money saved.

P.S. Agree that the information is useful - like the article, do a good deed :) And of course, write your questions in the comments. I will answer everyone!

Biometric sensor Touch ID first appeared in Apple devices in . A year later he moved to,. From a pleasant addition for owners of a flagship smartphone, the fingerprint scanner has turned into a real tool for protecting access not only to the mobile device itself, but also to individual applications, and has also become an integral element of the payment system. Unfortunately, Touch ID still does not always work as intended and as users would like. Let's try this to correct.

All the best deals on iPhones (there are even 20 thousand cheaper than the market). They change something and even give it away for free.

In May last year, Roman Yuryev already discussed this topic in detail and described in detail how to set up Touch ID so that you could then forget for a long time about malfunctions of the sensor and manually entering a password. Unfortunately, over time, the algorithm of the fingerprint scanner still begins to work with some “quirks”, which subsequently only become more frequent. For example, after switching to the iPhone 6, I was completely delighted with the updated Touch ID - it worked perfectly and smoothly for more than a month, and then suddenly began to fail, and this happened more and more every day.

The main thing is not to give up your hands, or in this case your fingers. The problem can be solved, using improvised means and will not require much of your time. This method was first described about a year ago, but for some reason it was ignored by most thematic resources, although the method really works, as I was convinced of from my own experience.

So, the best way to start is to delete all the prints and set them up again, as described in last year. After this, restart your smartphone, ending all applications first. Maybe these steps are unnecessary, but let them be for the purity of the experiment. Now let's go to Settings -> Touch ID & Password-> Enter the password, if necessary, and get into the very menu where your fingerprints are stored.

Now - attention - no more manipulations or transitions are needed, just touch the scanner the same way you do to unlock your device. Please note that when you hold your finger on the sensor known to the system, one of the prints in the list on the screen illuminated. This is the fingerprint of this finger, and you have just performed an additional scan of it, the results of which iOS saved somewhere in the system on the chip.

It happens in such a simple way Touch ID training, the biometric sensor takes additional pictures of your finger and can use them to unlock. Take five to seven minutes to properly scan each of your saved fingers, applying them to the button while in this menu. Every time one of the prints is highlighted, it means that the procedure was successful. Additional scans of your finger will appear in the device’s memory, and Touch ID will work much better, the activation process will be noticeably faster.

We repeat once again: each finger, differently, many times - the result will be noticeable immediately and will remain with everyday use of Touch ID.
