Which is better: Mac or Windows? No third party programs needed. Macs don't have right-click because there's only one button on the mouse.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have gained experience using a MacBook.

My first impression is very positive:
- everything is beautiful, elegant, stylish
- thoughtful charging cable - with magnet
- large and comfortable touchpad that supports gestures
- high-quality screen

Next, I decided to call a friend, an experienced poppy grower, and asked him to tell me about the features of poppy.
It's funny that the first thing he told me, almost verbatim, was: “The most important thing you have to learn is that the Mac is made for p@#$aces. Welcome to our ranks!” ;)) In general, we joked, talked about the peculiarities of working with Mac and I continued to deal with it on my own, and in the following days I began to do part of my work with it, and to pull a friend on occasionally arising questions.

Here are some other benefits that were discovered:
- I liked that Mac OS has a dashboard with widgets that can be called up with one button.
- and I also really liked that the installation of most applications is quite convenient: you drag the icon into the application and that’s it.
AND IT'S ALL!

As I got deeper and worked on the Mac, I began to find more and more disadvantages and gradually began to turn into a Mac-hater.

Here are the cons I found aka why Mac sucks:
- It turned out that in Mac OS you cannot expand the window to full screen!! I was simply shocked! What designer could have thought of making such a limitation? I found out that there are third-party hacks/plugins that solve this problem - but this is a real perversion.

It also turned out that you can resize the window only at the lower right corner. And at the same time, the cursor still does not know how to change its image - i.e. It’s not clear whether you captured the window or not.

I finally realized that the Mac sucks for me when I saw that it didn’t have keyboard layout Russian Typewriter.
I am used to writing in Russian using the fast touch typing method. And it requires a layout like a typewriter. Since there is no such layout, apparently poppy people don’t like to write a lot?

And another confirmation that Mac users are not “writers” and it is not convenient to type text on a Mac - there is no DELETE button on the keyboard. And that button called DELETE works like BACK SPACE. I was told that fn+delete solves this problem, but I I haven't been able to get used to it yet.

I really didn’t like that switching the keyboard to Russian is inconvenient and unusual (for me as a Windows user). It is clear that this is a matter of habit, but I expected that such things could be customized. But it turned out that switching the keyboard cannot, in principle, be changed to the usual “ALT-SHIFT” - for some reason all hotkey combinations must contain some kind of symbol key.

I really started to spit when it turned out that when the Russian language is turned on, copy/paste (CMD+C / CMD+V) does not work. But fortunately it turned out that these are only programs for Adobe Air so buggy. But for some reason they are so buggy only on Mac!

And the Mac completely sucks, if only because you can’t log in as a second user. The system can have several users, but only one can be logged in. It's that simple stone Age operating systems engineering!

Mac sucks because it doesn't have HIBERNATE! There is only Sleep mode which eats up the battery. Hibernate existed in Windows already 10 years ago! Well, is it really the Stone Age?

Mac sucks because the application menu is always only at the top of the screen, and when there are a lot of small windows on the screen, you have to run the mouse from window to menu and back and this is extremely inconvenient.
And you can often see the window of one application on top of the others, but it turns out that it is not active, but another application that does not have a window, but has a menu, is active.

Mac sucks because... Closing the window does not close the application and I have to think every time whether I am closing the last window and if the last one is closed, not by clicking on the cross, but via CMD+Q (or using the mouse through the menu). This is extremely annoying.

And yesterday I discovered one more thing where Mac is not user-friendly. In standard dialogs modal windows“Save As” and “Open” I spent quite a long time looking for how to go to the folder above. As a result, it turned out that the combobox that opens with a linear list of folders is actually a list of all overlying folders from the parent to the top one. Visually, this is not indicated in any way, and therefore if you don’t know the hierarchy of folders on the disk, you’ll never guess.

After installing more applications, I realized that with the installation and launch of programs, not everything is so smooth. When installing a complex application, it is not clear on what basis it is determined where it will be installed. Most applications are installed in Applications. But for some reason xCode was installed in the Library and I looked for it there for a long time. And Mono is also hidden somewhere.
But I still couldn’t run the program under Mono. “Open app with...” for some reason does not allow you to select executable file mono.

The main inconveniences listed above are software ones, but the MacBook itself, as I wrote at the very beginning, is elegant and almost ideal.
But there is also a flaw in this ideal. The USB holes on my MacBook are only on the left and it turns out that the tail of the mouse barely reaches from the left edge to the right - i.e. It is inconvenient to work with the mouse. Apparently gay people really made Macs? ;)

Conclusion? For me, Mac is definitely worse than PC. And I do and will do on it only the work that cannot be done on a PC (there is software from Apple that, for strategic, understandable and correct reasons, is only available on the Mac).

And now you can choose for yourself which is better for you - mac or pc.

PS. (from 10-Apr-2011)
I'm shocked - the long-outdated XP picked up a bluetooth headset with a bang and Skype offered to work through it - everything is like on the latest Win7. I didn't expect this. Just as he didn’t expect at all that the new, fashionable Macbook wouldn’t want to work with the same headset - he saw it, thought about it and said that he couldn’t find some services.
Macophiles, will you say that I just need a headset? ;))
(I ended up pairing a Mac with a headset, but Skype still doesn’t work through it, although all the settings are set correctly - all audio streams are through the headset)

And today I discovered that Mac stopped seeing my second wifi router - rebooting everything did not help. All the devices in the house see it, but Mac doesn’t see it.

In general, I don't like Mac. For me, Mac is like playing paintball in a wedding suit. It may be beautiful, but it’s not practical at all.

Although Windows 10 Anniversary Edition macOS Sierra are still in testing stage, Microsoft and Apple has already showed their vision of the operating system for the next year. We already know a lot about the interface, search integration, web surfing, multitasking and others key features these OS. However, the question remains: which desktop platform is better? Reviewers from the independent resource Laptopmag decided to answer it by comparing macOS features Sierra and Windows 10 Anniversary Edition.

Interface

Fresh and dynamic Windows design 10 last year inhaled new life V operating system Microsoft, while macOS Sierra is visually similar to last year's OS X El Capitan, which in turn resembles its predecessor OS X Yosemite. One of the most significant changes to the macOS interface is the picture-in-picture mode, borrowed from the iPad.

Windows 10 offers a tablet mode out of the box because Microsoft designed the platform with the expectation that it would be used on a variety of device types.

Winner: Windows 10 Anniversary Edition. The interface of the cross-platform system is more flexible and functional and provides more options.

Multitasking

Both macOS Sierra and Windows 10 have virtual desktops, but Microsoft has the upper hand here. In past Apple year implemented in OS X El Capitan Split mode View, which allows you to open two applications at once in split-screen mode. However, Windows can display four windows at once, creating a 4 x 4 grid, which is very useful when working on large displays.

Winner: Windows 10 Anniversary Edition. More apps on one screen.

Siri and Cortana

Spotlight helps you search on Mac necessary files since its inception in 2005, but this method of searching is becoming a thing of the past with the advent of voice assistants. By adding Siri support to macOS Sierra, Apple has caught up with Microsoft with virtual Cortana assistant, which debuted in Windows 10.

While Siri can help with file management and Cortana can send news alerts, both assistants are quite comfortable working with contextual queries. At the WWDC 2016 presentation, Craig Federighi asked Siri to show images sent by Ken that were labeled "Draft". During testing, Cortana not only answered the question "Who is the President of the United States?", but also reported that he is 54 years old when asked "How old is he?"

Both Siri and Cortana have results panels, but only Apple solution allows you to drag these results into the document the user is working with.

Winner: macOS Sierra. Siri is ahead of Cortana, but by a small margin.

Unique Features

Windows 10 Anniversary Edition and macOS Sierra allow you to unlock your computer using your smartphone, but other operating system innovations are very different. Microsoft has introduced functionality that allows owners of Windows computers and Xbox One play games with each other. Another unique feature of Windows 10 is the Ink function, which converts notes written with a stylus or finger into regular text.

An interesting feature of macOS is Optimized Storage, which automatically transfers files that are rarely used by the user to iCloud. As demonstrated at WWDC, this freed up 130 GB on a 250 GB hard drive.

The Photos app has received a significant upgrade with the ability to recognize faces, search by objects and people, and the Memories function, which turns photos into slideshows. Also Mac owners You'll appreciate seamless synchronization of files on your desktop with other computers running Sierra, as well as devices running iOS 10.

Winner: draw. Both platforms have received interesting features that will appeal to many users.

Web surfing

The most significant update regarding web surfing is the installation of extensions in Microsoft Edge. Unfortunately, nothing is known yet about how many there will be, so in this regard standard browser Windows 10 loses to Safari.

Both browsers allow you to pin tabs, but only Safari allows you to quickly mute any tab. In Edge, the user needs to go to the desired tab and mute the sound themselves. Although Microsoft browser and can add notes to web pages, the functionality of Safari cannot be compared.

Winner: macOS Sierra. Safari is better for web surfing than Edge.

Smartphone integration

Since Apple makes both Mac and iPhone, it made sense to organize them working together. Windows 10 Anniversary Edition lets you send SMS messages from your phone without having to pick it up mobile device, but Mac can do much more. Besides, in Sierra Apple seriously worked on integration, and now the company’s gadgets have a common clipboard, the Auto Unlock function allows you to unlock your computer using Apple Watch, and support Apple Pay means the ability to make payments on websites with using Touch ID on iPhone.

Winner: macOS Sierra. Apple's cross-platform integration is unrivaled.

Price and update

Microsoft provides free update from Windows 7 and 8 to Windows 10 until July 29, 2016. After this date, the cost of the update will be $119. macOS Sierra is available at any time, completely free.

It is important that Apple does not force users to update their devices to latest version systems for which Microsoft became famous.

Winner: macOS Sierra. Free and anytime.

Result – 5:3 in favor of macOS Sierra

Just a year ago, Windows 10 was superior to OS X El Capitan in a number of ways important indicators. But this year, Apple seriously improved the operating system, added support for Siri and redesigned the Photos application. Windows 10 Anniversary is not far behind, but Microsoft Edge will do the same long haul, to compete on equal terms with Safari.

When I was asked to write about the Mac Pro, I initially declined. Not because Apple's new miracle computer is not interesting, not at all. It’s simply not very correct to evaluate professional tools if you yourself are not a professional of this kind. Roughly speaking, if a fifth-grade student at a music school is given a Stradivarius violin to practice, he is unlikely to be able to appreciate it and demonstrate all its advantages.

In response to the refusal, I heard that many thousands of people around the world were waiting for my assessment of the Mac Pro. Crude flattery - effective tool convictions, and after a couple of days this is perhaps the most unusual desktop computer in the world came to the editorial office of PC World.

I already wrote a little about it in a report from the October Apple press conference, where the Mac Pro was first shown live, without a glass cover. In our time, when desktop computers few people are interested, Apple managed to attract serious attention to its brainchild even against the backdrop new iPads And MacBook Pro. Of course, never before has such a powerful, I would even say, uncompromising computer been so compact and quiet. Moreover, the exterior matches, having nothing in common with traditional system units.

But, as they say, there is a nuance. When we see Pro nearby with a MacBook, we understand - this is written in make-believe. In fact, such a full-length laptop can be used not only by a seasoned designer or video editor, but also by someone who likes to post photos of food and cats on social media. The screen, speed, powerful battery, comfortable keyboard - all this is good for solving absolutely any problem. But the Mac Pro is really tailored for specialists working with complex 2D and 3D graphics, processing video with highest resolution, recording multi-channel audio, etc. and so on. But a cat lover may not notice any difference at all, for example, with Mac mini. Which, with at least a five-fold difference in price, can cause conflicting emotions.

Official portrait

I'm just Mac user mini. Older version of this wonderful small computer It’s been on my desk for about a year now and, despite the previous generation processor, it satisfies my household needs entirely. Typing texts, processing RAW files from Sony cameras DSC-RX100, occasionally - video editing in Full HD. And, of course, fierce, indomitable Internet surfing. There was an idea to replace the classic HDD on an SSD, but after increasing the amount of RAM from 4 to 6 GB, the slight slowdowns disappeared completely, and I decided to just wait new version on Haswell.

And here is the Mac Pro. It is sold in a very compact box, which you can put in a branded bag and take home in your hands. Weight is about five kilograms, you won’t get too tired. Inside we are unexpectedly greeted by... pieces of foam plastic. They, of course, are quite elegant compared to their counterparts from boxes with TVs and monitors, but personally I don’t like the foam Apple packaging I haven't come across it at all before. Perhaps it would have been worth using a cork to come into contact with such an exquisite device, since the task of severe economy in in this case obviously not standing. But - as it is. The box contains only the computer itself and the power cable. Everything else is offered to be purchased independently, based on your own needs and capabilities.

Six Thunderbolt connectors are, of course, very cool. But I personally would like more USB.

And you can buy a lot of things. Keyboard, mouse, trackpad - that's understandable. And it doesn't hurt to be decent acoustic system(with or without wires), a monitor (up to three standard ones with a resolution of up to 4K, or as many as six using the Thunderbolt interface), external drives (USB or Thunderbolt, as you see fit) and so on and so forth. By the way, if you, like me, have a newfangled monitor with a resolution higher than Full HD, for Mac connections Pro, you won’t need special, expensive adapters; a regular HDMI cable will suffice. Thanks to Apple for introducing HDMI 1.4 support.

I ordered the younger one to study Mac version Pro, although even its characteristics are very impressive. 4-core Intel Xeon E5 with base frequency 3.7 GHz (up to 3.9 GHz under load), 16 GB of RAM, two graphics AMD cores FirePro D300 with two gigabytes of GDDR5 VRAM on each (for those who don’t like big names, let me clarify – these are analogues of the Radeon HD 7850). Only the SSD capacity (256 GB) hinted that this was basic model. But, given the six Thunderbolt connectors, there is no problem connecting external storage and use it at the same speed as a regular internal HDD or SSD. Let me emphasize - just ordinary, because the SSD in the Mac Pro is simply prohibitively fast, and something external cannot catch up with it. 900 megabytes of read and write is no joke.

With the cover removed, the Mac Pro looks almost more impressive than with it on. This is just some kind of orgasm of engineering. Everything is not only thought out to the smallest detail, but also simply beautiful.

Even the textolite of the memory modules is matching!

Or they could have installed regular Hynix, like everyone else.

If the capabilities of the listed hardware are not enough for you, but you still have plenty of money, Apple offers many interesting opportunities to spend it. First, pay attention to the second standard configuration Mac Pro with 6-core Xeon E5 and two AMD FirePro D500 (3 GB video memory per chip). Finally, for the most demanding and wealthy people, there is the opportunity to create their own configuration with a 12-core Xeon E5, 64 GB of RAM, a terabyte SSD and two AMD FirePro D700 with 6 GB of GDDR5 video memory on each. The dimensions of the computer will not change.

Impressive? Personally, it makes me shiver. Especially considering that the Mac Pro is practically silent in operation. It gets really hot under load, so I wouldn’t recommend putting chocolates on it. But it doesn't make noise. For those who work a lot (work, not just sit) at a computer, this is a very important argument in favor of the new Apple product. Because making a powerful system is not difficult, but making it behave unnoticed is a different task. And before there was an opinion that it was simply unsolvable in such compact dimensions. It also uses one large turbine-type propeller, which is installed on top and draws air through the entire body. This probably imposes certain obligations on cleaning the table and the room as a whole. Because extracting dust from a vacuum cleaner bag is much easier and cheaper than extracting it from the bowels of a Mac Pro. By the way, the system turns on with a sound reminiscent of the starting rattling of heads hard drive. It's a funny feeling.

Setting up a new Apple computer traditionally simple - just connect to home network and feed him the saved image Time Machine. After about an hour, the Mac Pro already had all the settings and applications from the Mac mini. I sat down at it and began to do my usual things, listening to the sensations. The sensations were silent. There was no difference at all with the Mac mini. More precisely, the presence of an SSD significantly reduced the loading time, and applications opened more quickly, but in general - exactly the same picture.

I launched Photoshop CC and began applying my favorite effects to the photos. And again I felt nothing. Everything was as fast as it was - and it remains so. The knowledgeable guys advised me to open something 40 megapixel and create twenty layers. Then, they say, you’ll get into it. But my design career ended 14 years ago and most likely will not resume. Therefore, I did not experiment with layers. But in Mac performance Pro I have no doubt.

When processing video in Final Cut Pro X, not only the processor is used, but also the graphics cores. Therefore, it is impossible not to notice the acceleration here. It takes about four times less time to create a finished video than on a Mac mini with its mobile Core i7 and integrated graphics Ivy Bridge. But if in the case of Full HD we just have a pleasant acceleration of work, then when we switch to 4K resolution, the Mac Pro becomes the only truly effective working tool in the current Apple rack. In the end, the difference between 10 minutes and half an hour is good, but not critical. But when you have a choice between half an hour and two hours...

Regarding installation benefits high quality sound, then I confess that I don’t understand anything about this at all, and if that’s the case, I won’t even try to pretend to be an expert. But knowledgeable guys say it’s a smart thing.

What is my conclusion from my experience with the Mac Pro?

If you are a very wealthy person and the tasks you solve on your computer do not include continuous video editing in 4K, mixing albums of domestic first-tier pop stars and lifting their bust after photo shoots for glossy magazines, you should not buy a Mac Pro. If money is burning your pocket, buy an iPad, an iPhone, a couple of MacBook Pros, a Mac mini for each room in your country house, and a 27-inch iMac for your office. Seriously, it will make a lot more sense. Because the benefits of the Mac Pro cannot be felt in typical home-office applications. Even in games, it competes on equal terms with the new generation 27-inch iMac, especially if you don’t get greedy on the latter’s GPU (by the way, my Mac mini under study outperformed the new Tomb Raider seven times). To put it simply, installing a Mac Pro at home is as logical and convenient as cutting bread with a medical scalpel. Some will be impressed by your daring, but most will twirl their finger at their temple.

Mac Pro is a product for professionals. For those who shovel serious amounts of data every day, no matter what kind - graphic, multimedia or scientific. For them (more precisely, for those of them who feel comfortable in the OS X environment), this computer will be an extremely useful acquisition and, as a bonus, a solid decoration for their desktop. Considering that there are simply no analogues on the market (I'm talking about the combination of performance and form factor), the price does not look too high.

Some programs download automatically when macOS starts. They always work in the background, therefore they use RAM and load the processor. Because of this, your Mac may not have enough power for other tasks.

Check the startup list. If it contains programs, permanent job that you don't need, remove them from this list. Expand apple menu and open the section " System Settings» → “Users and groups”. Then go to the Login Items tab. To remove a program, select it and click on the minus button.

Speed Mac work depends on volume free space, available on disk. If the drive is more than 90% full, the computer may slow down.

Check how much space is left on your disk. Expand the Apple menu, click About This Mac and go to the Storage tab. If less than 10% of the storage capacity is free, clear the disk. extra files. To do this, click “Manage” and follow the system’s recommendations for optimizing storage.

Perhaps among the programs you have installed, there are some that you do not use. They take up disk space and can use up other system resources, slowing down your Mac.

Find and remove everything unnecessary programs. Open Finder → Programs and look for them in the list that opens. If you find it, drag the shortcuts of such applications to the trash icon one by one.

As you use macOS, software junk accumulates in a special section of memory called the cache. And because of this, your Mac may slow down. Clear cache using or .

5. Remove unnecessary objects from your desktop

Perhaps you store files and folders directly on your desktop. This is not the best practice because such objects take up RAM. If there are too many of these files and folders or they are large, your computer's performance may suffer. Therefore, it is better to remove them from the desktop and distribute them in other disk partitions.

Spotlight indexes sections file system to help you find the files and folders you need. Indexing takes a significant amount of resources and in some cases causes your Mac to run slowly.

To check the relationship between Spotlight and system speed, go to the Apple menu in System Preferences → Programs → Utilities → System Monitor. In the table that appears, click on the “% CPU” column so that the most power-hungry processes appear on top.

If you notice that when the computer slows down, processes called mdworker are at the top of the list and at the same time the graph displays at the bottom of the window increased load, try optimizing your Spotlight search.

There are probably folders on your computer with many nested files that you don't need to search through. Exclude these sections from the indexing list. To do this, expand the Apple menu and click “System Preferences” → Spotlight. Go to the Privacy tab and drag the folders you don't want the service to index here.

It is possible that there are other processes in the System Monitoring menu that create increased CPU load. If they belong to programs you know, try closing the latter. If there are unknown processes among them, search the Internet Additional information about why they consume a lot of resources and whether they can be stopped.

Your Mac may experience slow speeds due to storage problems. You can check for their presence using Disk Utility. If problems are found, it will try to solve them.

Open Finder → Programs → Utilities and launch Disk Utility. In the left panel, select the disk to be scanned and click “First Aid” and then “Run”.

If the system refuses to check the disk, it may be damaged. Copy important data to a third-party storage device and, if other tips do not help, contact service center. Sounds such as crunching and clicking noises may also indicate a disk failure.

A drop in performance may be caused by errors in the software itself. macOS system or its poor optimization. Developers try to quickly correct such errors with the help of updates.

Update macOS to the latest available version. To check its availability, open the program App Store and on top panel tools, click on the “Updates” button.

10. Check your RAM consumption

Often serious performance problems are associated with a lack of RAM.

To check its status, open the section “System Settings” → “Programs” → “Utilities” → “System Monitoring”. Select the Memory tab and look at the Memory Load indicator at the bottom. If you see a red color on it, it means that the system does not have enough RAM.

11. Make sure your computer doesn't get hot

Your Mac may slow down when it gets too hot. Therefore, it depends on the temperature of the processor and other components. If it exceeds valid values, take to cool the device.

12. Restore the system to a previous state

Maybe, low speed your computer is the result of errors in macOS that have accumulated over a long time of using it. If all else fails, try restoring the system to a previous state.

I have already mentioned that the high performance of Mac OS X, and iOS too, is due to the very close connection of the software to the hardware.

But over time, users begin to notice that their Mac has begun to slow down and what previously opened instantly now begins to slow down. Let's look at the most likely reasons slow work Mac.

Hard drive is full

System performance is significantly affected by the remaining free space on the drive. If there is a shortage of it, the system will simply have nowhere to store temporary files that are created when applications are launched and it will be forced to delete old archives in order to get the necessary disk space, and this is time.

Is being decided this problem elementary. First you need to know the size free space on the drive (displayed in the Finder in the status menu; if you don’t have one, click View -> Show status menu).

And if you see the size there free memory less than 2 GB, then immediately go to the “trash”, “downloads” and delete movies, videos, and game installers that you have watched a long time ago. In general, clean your Mac of everything unnecessary and the result will not keep you waiting.

Not enough RAM

The presence of this problem affects the performance of the system much more seriously, since after a lack of RAM, Mac OS X uses virtual memory, which is much slower than the operational one.

To check the status of RAM, go to system monitoring, select the “memory” tab and look at the load level on the graph.

As you can see, everything is fine with me) If this is not the case for you and the scale is approaching a critical point, then look running applications that are not used, it makes sense to complete them. Also try restarting your web browser (due to the web pages you visit, it consumes quite a lot of operational resources).

Another effective and painless way to free up RAM is to enter terminal team purge, thereby clearing the RAM of your Mac (before I got acquainted with this command, I stupidly rebooted the system).

However, there is one side effect - when the cleanup is launched, the Mac will not respond for about 20 seconds, but this is absolutely normal.

CPU load

If most of the processor resources are used by one application, then it is possible that other tasks will not be performed as quickly as we would like.

You can check this all in the same system monitoring in the CPU tab, the principle is the same as with RAM.

Look at how much free processor resources you have; if this figure remains at 40% for a long time, then you need to track the most resource-intensive applications (the first column after the process name) and terminate them.

There is a wonderful program to optimize the operation of OS X, as well as to monitor basic system parameters. I recommend.

Cluttered desktop

Take a good look at your desktop for unnecessary files or icons. The fact is that Mac OS X draws all the thumbnails on the desktop, for which it uses RAM. So, I strongly recommend removing everything unnecessary or storing it in a separate folder.
