This technology can be used for facial recognition in low-light conditions. I think it won’t be too difficult for Google to teach the algorithms to brighten the frame in real time and thus make identification without using laser illumination, which Cupertino is relying on.

One leading business analyst, Ming Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, reports that the unveiling of Apple's iPhone X last month has caused Android makers to shift their focus from trying to integrate an under-display fingerprint scanner to developing their own version of the TrueDepth camera with 3D scanning and facial recognition.

The understanding that Face ID will be more interesting to the user came to manufacturers after a year of attempts to develop an under-display fingerprint scanner. As you'll notice, the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8, with their edge-to-edge "infinity" display, don't have room for a home button that usually houses a fingerprint scanner. Samsung has resorted to using a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner on all three smartphones. Apple's plan turned out to be more ambitious. The company has implemented a TrueDepth facial recognition system built into the new front camera, which has a 3D scanning function. Back in February, long before the presentation of the iPhone X, Kuo predicted revolutionary popularity for this camera. Now that Apple has introduced Face ID in the iPhone X, it appears that a large portion of users are looking forward to the prospect of unlocking premium Android smartphones using their face.

Back in August, Kuo reported that the first Samsung model to feature an under-display fingerprint scanner would be the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. He still believes the Galaxy Note 9 will be the first Samsung model to feature an under-glass fingerprint scanner. However, he points out that Android manufacturers, since the presentation of the iPhone X on September 12, have devoted most of their efforts to developing 3D scanning technology.
