Basic setup

Open any browser and enter address bar the router address that you specified earlier. Among the conveniences of the latest versions of the Netgear web interface, one can note the division of all router settings into “basic” and “professional”. It is implemented in the form of two horizontal tabs: “Basic mode” and “Advanced mode”. settings". At the same time, much more technical information is displayed in professional mode.

To configure the connection, go to the “Settings -> Internet Settings” menu. Check the type of connection, as well as the presence of a username and password in your agreement with your Internet provider. If the connection is password protected, check “Yes” in the first setting item, and then select the connection type from the drop-down list. There are options to choose from: PPTP, PPPoE, L2TP. Enter your username and password.

Setting up a Wi-Fi network

In addition to simple traffic accounting, it allows you to set a monthly limit on the volume of sent and received data. If necessary, you can also enable warnings that will be displayed before the end of your monthly traffic allowance. In addition, a connection time limit is available, but the vast majority of modern Internet providers no longer use it.

To change network addressing, select the menu item “Settings -> LAN Settings”. Here you can change the router name and its IP address. Do not forget that after changing the IP, you must use the new address to further log into the web interface. The item “Use the router as a DHCP server” is responsible for automatically assigning IP addresses various clients. You can set the address range yourself by entering the start and end IP addresses. If you need to set up manual addressing, be sure to add the MAC addresses of all devices to the Address Reservation table and allocate your IPs for them. 2. When setting up the router via LuCI, I received a brick twice. When saving the settings wifi router died and no longer responded to external stimuli. Restored via tftp.

During operation, the device heats up, but not critically. We recently reviewed the WNDR4000, which occupies the highest position in the Netgear line (except for the WNDR4500, which was announced but has not yet reached our market). Just below is the WNDR3800 model, which is the successor to the WNDR3700 and provides 300 Mbit/s modes for the operation of its two wireless modules.

The hardware configuration has changed little, so the main reason for releasing the updated model is a new version embedded software and additional services provided by it. In particular, this model has support for the Netgear Genie program for configuring and monitoring the device, compatibility with Time Machine, ReadySHARE and Clear Channel cloud technologies for automatic selection optimal radio channel during operation. In addition, the device began to support L2TP technology, widespread in the local market, access to the provider’s network with VPN connections and IPTV.

Appearance

Netgear continues to use the same chassis design, implementing only minimal updates. In the WNRD3800, they consist of changing the background color at the end with indicators to red and the operating mode of the LEDs to constant (it is no longer possible to visually determine the activity of the ports). The rest has been preserved - the case dimensions are 22x16x3 centimeters, it is made of dark plastic, the top cover is glossy, the bottom is matte. The set of indicators is quite large: status, Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz, Wi-Fi 5 GHz, USB, Internet, LAN1-LAN4. There are also two buttons on the front end - for quick shutdown wireless modules and for connecting a WPS client.

At the back you can find the power supply input with a switch, four gigabit LAN ports, a gigabit port for connecting to a provider, and one USB 2.0 port. There's still a lot of space left, so it would be more interesting to see more than one USB port.

The reset button is located on the bottom, and if the router is placed on a wall, you will have to remove it to reset the settings. Note that the case supports all installation options - horizontally on rubber feet, vertically on the included stand and on the wall in any of four positions.

Taking care of the safety of its users, Netgear has implemented Wi-Fi networks with encryption out of the box in this model. All devices have configured WPA/WPA2-PSK modes and individual network names and passwords, which are listed on a sticker located on the bottom of the case and repeated on the top cover. In addition, there are labels for all ports, buttons and indicators and instructions for connecting to the device’s web interface.

Ventilation, like its predecessors, is ensured by located along the contour of the case and around the logo on the top panel holes. During testing, there were no problems with the device overheating.

Hardware configuration

This model uses the Atheros chipset as the hardware platform, as did the first version of the WNDR3700 device. Settings and features

WNRD3800 uses a new generation web interface - Netgear genie. We have already seen it in the WNRDMAC review. The changes mainly concern the external design. It is possible to select a language, Russian translation is present. Due to the fixed page width, there are sometimes design errors. We also note the built-in help system. The menu is presented in two versions - “Basic mode” and “Advanced” - designed for users with different backgrounds and requirements.

In the first case, the main page shows the current status of the router, including Internet connection, Wi-Fi operation, number of clients, parental control functions, disk access (ReadySHARE) and guest network. The pictures are also links to the corresponding settings pages.

To connect to the Internet, all modern options can be used - direct connection, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP. The set of parameters is traditional - you can set IP addresses, change MAC, select the connection mode if using a VPN.

The router uses two independent radio units for the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. basic settings wireless networks include selection of name, channel number, mode (indicated as maximum speed, which is not very convenient and understandable), security parameters (there is support for open networks, WEP (not available in 802.11n mode), WPA/WPA2 with a password and via a server RADIUS), enable wireless device isolation.

Additionally, you can create guest wireless networks - one for each range. They may have own settings, in particular names and security parameters. By default, guests can only use the Internet, but you can allow them access to the local network segment.

The “Connected Devices” item shows a list of current clients, indicating their IP and MAC addresses, as well as the system name, if available.

We have already come across the Parental Control function in recent reviews. It uses an external OpenDNS service to filter and limit access to resources by category and time. The system will be interesting for those devices on which it is difficult or impossible to install traditional security measures, such as smartphones, tablets, and game consoles. In our opinion, this is a very good element of additional protection for home users. The only thing it lacks is convenient reports on the system's operation.

The “ReadySHARE” section is used to configure work with USB devices, and we will talk about this a little later.

In general, “Basic mode” allows you to initial setup router for accessing the Internet and working with wireless networks. For more complex settings, you need to use the “Advanced” mode.

There are two “wizards” for setting up the Internet and connecting WPS clients. They would probably look more organic in the basic mode.

The “advanced” menu consists of five groups of pages. The first of them, “Settings,” contains the pages already described above for selecting Internet connection parameters and organizing wireless networks. Here you can configure the local network segment - you can set the IP address and name of the router, enable RIP, configure the built-in DHCP server(address range and fixed IP-MAC assignments).

The last item in this group is setting up a QoS traffic management system. As before, we are of the opinion that this function is of little use for home devices, since the processors in them are relatively weak and it only works for transmission from the user to the Internet. Just activating this system reduces the speed of work on a direct connection by half. The rules specify the applications (defined by port numbers) MAC addresses or physical LAN ports. They can be assigned one of the priority levels. If necessary, you can limit the overall transmission speed of the channel.

In security functions, in addition to parental controls, we implemented blocking of sites by keywords in the link (you can specify the client’s IP address, which will be able to visit all sites) and blocking services by port numbers for all or selected clients on the local network. These services can operate on a schedule - one time range for selected days of the week. Setting the built-in clock is only possible in automatic mode.

In the same group, sending messages and logs by e-mail is programmed. You can only use one recipient and authentication per SMTP server. The log is quite detailed and allows you to select the categories of messages displayed. These include blocking sites and services, system messages, wireless client connections, port translation via UPnP, attacks and port scans. Traditionally, in the “Administration” section you can find options to save/restore/reset the configuration, change the password and update the firmware.

The last group, “Advanced settings”, contains more changeable device parameters. For wireless modules, you can set an operating schedule (more precisely, shutdown periods accurate to 30 minutes), reduce the transmitter power, program an access list by MAC addresses, and activate the relay function. To translate ports, you can use the UPnP protocol or specify rules manually.

In this case, it is possible to use different internal and external ports. Support for port initiation has been implemented, useful for some online games. The built-in DDNS client is designed to work only with the DynDNS.org service. User can add own recordings to the device's routing table. Remote access to the device’s web interface is possible. It is possible to change the port number and limit client IP addresses. The router has several options for using the IPv6 protocol, including automatic, tunnels, fixed and PPPoE.

The router has a built-in counter of downloaded and sent traffic, the report of which provides information for the day, week and month, which can be useful for assessing your needs.

Generally new interface it looks more convenient and beautiful, but it still needs some work - change the location of some items, add new features.

In addition to the classic configuration via the web interface, you can use a special separate program for this purpose, available in versions for Windows and Mac OS. It also has monitoring, problem solving and reference system. Due to such a variety of mixed options, in currently it doesn’t seem very useful or convenient, especially since you can’t get by with just it anyway.

Working with USB devices

One of the hallmarks of high-performance devices is the USB port. It is used to expand the capabilities of routers - implementation network drive and/or network printer. If necessary simultaneous use Several devices can be connected via a USB hub. To work with a network printer, installation on a computer is required. USB programs Control Center. It is available in versions for Windows and Mac OS; it provides translation of the interface into several languages, including Russian. The utility connects the printer to the desired PC in automatic or manual mode, which allows it to be used alternately with several computers. There is also a built-in scanning module for MFPs, but any standard programs can be used to solve this problem.

Flash drives and hard drives can be used as storage media. To safely disconnect disks, you need to use the corresponding button in the router’s web interface. There are few settings in this mode - network name and the name of the working group, enabling/disabling protocols, allowing access from the Internet via HTTP and FTP, and the service port numbers can be changed. With restricting user access, everything is quite sad - there is only “everyone” and “administrator”, additional accounts cannot be added. The description of how the service works in the documentation is as follows: you register an account on the website, specify a name and password in the router (adding it to your pool of “cloud” devices, of which there may be several), get the ability to view a list of documents in a browser via the Internet or full access Using a special program for Windows/iOS/Android, you control access of other service users to your data. It looks, of course, attractive, but the reality turned out to be much more prosaic. The browser actually showed the device name and a list of shared folders. Installing the client program on the PC allowed us to mount disks as usual network resources, however, the speed of working with them via the Internet was catastrophically low - about 300 KB/s. So at this time we would not recommend using this feature in any way. And of course, paid (!) programs for mobile devices They look really weird today. It is possible that with the end free use service and introduction subscription fee at the end of this year, the situation will change.

Performance

Practical testing of the device was carried out on a 30/15 Mbit/s Beeline Internet channel in L2TP mode. We did not encounter any connection problems. We note the support for IPTV from this provider, including via Wi-Fi (we used the SimpleTV program on a laptop for testing). The load of hundreds of tasks in the uTorrent program turned out to be quite capable of the device. In this mode, the data download speed was more than 3 MB/s, which corresponds to the tariff plan. When setting restrictions in the client to the maximum number of simultaneous connections at 1000, the router also coped with simultaneous TV viewing and Internet access. If you do not set a limit, the number of connections can reach 3000, but artifacts may appear on the TV image. Working with a 100 Mbit/s channel with a direct connection is also not a problem for this model, including when working with p2p at the highest possible speed and without affecting Internet access.

The method of testing routers at the stand is in the process of improvement. In this material, we used two changes in it - firstly, the overall performance was increased test systems, and secondly, new tests have been added for wireless connections. The IxChariot program is used to measure performance; all Internet connection options supported by the device are checked - Permanent Address, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP.

The speed of the device, even with a direct connection, does not allow us to talk about gigabit speeds - maximum speed access is about 450 Mbit/s. At the same time, if you are using a 100 Mbit/s channel, then the WNDR3800 can handle it in any mode, including full duplex in L2TP. Despite the gradual abandonment of PPTP/L2TP by providers, these technologies continue to be widely used, so the high performance of the model in question will come in handy here.

The router allows you to use local resources of the provider when connecting to the Internet through an access server using a username and password. The following graph shows the distribution of speeds when simultaneously downloading data from the provider’s network and the Internet.

Performance in this scenario is also at a fairly high level, and the 100 Mbit/s channel can be fully used.

The router has two wireless modules for the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands with support for speeds up to 300 Mbit/s. Unlike previous model, operation at 2.4 GHz is possible at full speed, regardless of the state of the air, which is good news. The testing included adapters D-Link DWA-140, Intel 5300, LevelOne WUA-0603, Netgear WNA1100, TP-Link TL-WN821N and AirPort included Mac mini released mid-2010. It should be noted that the performance of the main test laptop is clearly not enough to work with high-performance adapters, and in the next publication we plan to use new platform and new adapters, including 5 GHz.

Device settings for the test - speed 300 Mbps, fixed channel, WPA2-AES security, short header (in additional options Wi-Fi). The distance between the router and the client was about five meters without obstacles. There were several networks on the air at 2.4 GHz with insignificant signal strength.

The best results in the 2.4 GHz band were shown with Intel 5300 and D-Link DWA-140 adapters. Their users can expect speeds of over 100 Mbps. The TL-WN821N and WUA-0603 performed slightly worse. The Netgear WNA1100 adapter receives data very well, but its transmission is very sad. However, he had shown similar behavior before. The manufacturer should consider checking collaboration router with its own controllers. Despite setting the “Europe” region in the router, the Apple AirPort adapter in the 2.4 GHz band clearly did not use dual-channel mode and showed results at 80-90 Mbps, but at 5 GHz it overtook the Intel 5300 and reached speeds of 170 Mbps. However, this is a consequence of the more powerful platform in the Mac mini than in the test laptop, where the processor has a nominal frequency of only 1.5 GHz.

The above figures were obtained on a LAN-WLAN pair and show performance in information exchange tasks within a home local network. However, with the increase in Internet access speeds and the abandonment of desktop PCs, it is also of interest to study the performance of the WAN-WLAN segment. Some inexpensive routers may experience slower speeds Wi-Fi access to the Internet if implemented via VPN. To test this scenario, the Intel 5300 adapter was used as one of the most productive. All modes of operation of the router were tested. The results are presented in the following graphs.

With the WNDR3800 we see a relatively low speed penalty in this scenario. In the case of unidirectional flows, the maximum drop in wireless access speed is about 20%. Moreover, the greater impact is on the 5 GHz range.

Netgear WNDR3800 belongs to the class of dual-band high-performance home routers. In some ways, it can be seen as an improvement on the WNDR3700. Domestic users will be interested in new firmware features that allow full use of the device with our providers. The model's performance in routing tasks will be more than enough when working on 100 Mbit/s channels in any modes. If you are lucky enough to connect to a gigabit channel, then here you can get 200-450 Mbit/s, depending on the type of connection.

The presence of two independent wireless modules will help achieve high speed connections when operating on the still lightly loaded 5 GHz band. In general, the router shows Wi-Fi speed at the level of 100-170 Mbit/s with high-performance adapters and approximately two times less with the simplest single-channel devices. Thanks to the powerful platform, wireless clients will be able to fully enjoy high speed access in Internet.

The presence of a USB port can turn the device into a print server and network storage. In the first case, it works with multiple PCs and supports the scanning function. But the capabilities of working with disks do not look very attractive by modern standards. The speed of access to them is relatively high, but access control is clearly not designed for multi-user use.

Firmware update, in addition to increasing the attractiveness for Russian users, brought several other useful features, in particular parental controls and the ability to select the least loaded radio channels while working. Unfortunately, we cannot indicate here the ReadySHARE Cloud function, which is currently not implemented very well.

The WNDR3800 router will be of interest to those users who require fast device for operation on 100 Mbit/s channels with IPTV support and a dual-band radio unit. Today, even an ordinary user is able to create a wired or radio connection to the Internet, holding in his hands step-by-step algorithm actions.

Preliminary preparation of devices

To start connecting the n300 router to the Internet, you need to perform a number of preliminary operations:

  • Connect the power supply to the rear panel and turn on the device;
  • Insert the WAN cable and connect the PC using a second switch cable (inserted into one of the five dedicated ports);
  • Press the power button, which is moved to the front panel for this model.

After these manipulations, the indicator lights should indicate that the device is turned on in one of the ports and the power cord is connected to the router, which means: you can proceed to software configuration.

If your supplier uses a connection using the PPPoE protocol, for example, like Rostelecom or DOM.RU, setup is carried out as follows:

  • Open the Internet menu item;

  • If your provider is Dom.ru (it uses binding to MAC addresses), set the selector to use your computer’s address in the last setting item;
  • We save the results and open any site to check.

If your provider uses an L2TP connection, as is the case if your operator is Beeline, the instructions above will change as follows:

  • Instead of PPoE, select the connection type for your router - L2TP;
  • We manually enter the server address of the Internet provider (for Beeline this is tp.internet.beeline.ru).

Otherwise, we use the same settings (without binding to the MAC address of your device). We check the automatic receipt of IP and save the changes. After this, the wired network of the Netgear n300 router should work.

Wi-Fi setup

In order to connect a wifi network on the n300 model, follow these steps:

  • Open the item from the menu on the left “Wi-Fi network”;
  • A new window opens: in the line with the name, set the name for your wireless connection;
  • Channel selection can be left automatic, or you can set your own value if there are many other wireless networks around;
  • The connection mode should pass up to 300 Mbit/s;
  • In the security settings, select the last selector (the most advanced encryption type);

  • We apply the changes and try to log into a website via wifi.

How to update the firmware?

To ensure that the router can be connected to the Internet without problems in the future, you need to install the latest version of the software, that is, reflash the device. This is done in several stages:

  • The first step is to go to the manufacturer’s official website and download the latest firmware version, for example jwnr2000v2;
  • We disconnect the device’s Internet cable, but leave the one that connects it to the computer;
  • Go to the device settings menu, click on the firmware number in the page header;
  • Select the update file on your computer by clicking the Browse button;
  • We load, wait until the router reboots and we can go into the settings again;
  • Download the configuration file from the official website or from disk;
  • Select the “Manage settings” item in the router menu, then “Restore settings”;
  • Loading from a computer required file and wait for it to install.

Then try going to the settings page again, and then insert the WAN cable (Internet) and log into any website. If everything works, congratulations! You managed to connect the Internet to your Netgear router yourself.
