Ledger Nano S hardware wallet - full review and instructions. Ledger Nano S wallet - setting up, replenishing and transferring funds, where to buy and how to use with altcoins Double confirmation of the bitcoin ledger nano s transfer

Ledger Nano S is a hardware or “cold” wallet for cryptocurrency. It is capable of supporting a large list of currencies, including a set of the most popular tokens - BTC, Ethereum, BCC, Riple, ETC, ZEC, LTC, BTG. The device has an internal chip that stores your individual key in an isolated environment. Ledger Nano S is also interesting because it allows you to simultaneously store different cryptocurrencies on one device.

There is proprietary software that provides emergency account recovery in the event of loss of physical media.

The device is equipped with a small display that will allow you to see every transaction made and control the device. Every time you turn on the Ledger Nano S, it automatically checks the integrity of its firmware to avoid the introduction of spyware.

Naturally, the main task of a crypto wallet is to ensure maximum protection of your crypto capital, preventing hacker attacks and token theft. Such cases are currently not so rare, and if the amounts of your transactions on the crypto market are significant, then you should be concerned about the safety of your assets. The Ledger Nano S is one way to do this.

Unboxing

Ledger Nano S is packaged in a small cardboard box. White color, on the front side there is a life-size print of the device itself. Reminds me of a mobile phone packaging – thick cardboard, nice minimalistic design.

The cardboard is thick, the box is rigid, and in addition, it was originally wrapped in polyethylene, which protects it from abrasions and moisture.

Having opened the lid of the box, we see the wallet itself on a special backing. All included accessories are located underneath. The complete set is as follows:

Ledger Nano S Wallet

USB cable

Management

Two laces and a ring

The set is quite expected, there is even a lanyard around the neck so that you will never part with your wallet. You can also attach it to a bunch of keys as a kind of keychain. If you are engaged in trading on exchanges, then this opportunity will be very useful.

There is also a set of cheat cards designed for recording and storing control phrases. This is convenient, and special thanks to the manufacturer for this.

The downside is that the instructions do not contain a word in Russian, and for some users this may create difficulties.

Appearance

Ledger Nano S looks like a regular flash drive. The outer protective casing is made of stainless steel. The surface is stylized by brushing, this reduces soiling and adds aesthetics.

The body of the device itself is plastic, matte and dense. There is a micro-USB connector at the end, and there are two buttons on the side.

The device also has a miniature screen. It is one-color, but it is possible to invert the image and adjust the brightness so that it hurts the eyes. The bright sun will definitely not interfere.

Appearance is probably not too important for such a device; rather, attention should be paid to convenience and size. Ledger Nano S is miniature – 98x18x9 mm, weighing only 16 grams. Due to its appearance, it will not attract unnecessary attention; others will see it as just an ordinary flash drive.

In addition, there is a way to further reduce the weight - if you remove the top metal part, the device itself will weigh just over 6 grams.

Functionality, features

Ledger Nano S has two chips in its arsenal - ST31H320 and STM32F042, which are used to store information in encrypted form. Many cryptographic algorithms are supported. The device certification level is CC EAL5+. This standard means that the system has been tested by all possible mathematical methods using highly specialized standards. Only military security standards are higher - for example, operating systems for the latest generation fighter jets and NASA space shuttles have an EAL6+ rating.

Almost all popular operating systems are supported – Windows 7+, Mac 10.8+ and Linux. Do not forget that the device does not have a built-in battery and can only work when connected to a computer.

When it comes to safety methods, there are a few key points that the owner should know.

All transactions with the wallet can be completed only after entering an 8-digit PIN code

Operations are confirmed by simultaneously pressing buttons, which increases security against malware

A two-factor authentication system, which implies, in addition to a personal code, verification with a 24-word passphrase, which is randomly generated on the device itself. Thus, even if the Ledger Nano S is stolen or lost, an attacker will not be able to access your funds (unless, of course, they get your passphrase)

The original Ledger Live software is required to work with the wallet, and it additionally controls the integrity of your device’s firmware, connecting only to original wallets

If you enter the PIN code incorrectly three times in a row, the device erases all internal memory. Restoration is possible only after entering the control phrase.

If your device is damaged/lost, you can restore access to all your accounts using a passphrase. True, you will have to spend money on buying a new Ledger crypto wallet

First setup of a crypto wallet

If you follow the instructions out of the box, the first thing to do to set up the Ledger Nano S is to go to the official website page. Now it offers to download the original software - the Ledger Live manager. That’s what we’ll do (it’s worth mentioning here that the wallet is capable of working with third-party software - MyCrypto, Electron Cash, with extensions for the Chrome browser - Ledger Manager, Ledger Wallet Bitcoin, Ledger Wallet Ethereum).

So, download the manager, after installation and launch we begin the setup procedure.

The program prompts you to select an action - initialize a new device, restore, use with an already initialized device, and a help menu.

Select initialization. We are asked to select the model of our device, and then shown the procedure for the necessary actions.

Of course, you need to connect the device to your PC. Then press both buttons simultaneously and select “configure as a new device.” All these instructions are duplicated on the screen of our Ledger Nano S.

After entering and confirming the PIN code, you need to confirm the passphrase. It consists of 24 words (!), arranged in a given order. The phrase is generated randomly by the device itself; you just need to remember the correct sequence and repeat it. The resulting phrase must be written down; it will be convenient to do this on the included card from the box. You need to keep it like the apple of your eye, and not lose it - it is unlikely that you will be able to remember the entire sequence in an emergency, and the loss of this phrase will mean the loss of all funds. In addition, it is obvious that if this phrase falls into the hands of attackers, it will also amount to a loss of control over their assets.

If everything is in order, we get to the settings page of the Ledger live manager itself, where you just need to set a separate password for the software, after which we finally go to the manager itself. Under the flying mini-fireworks of animated confetti. Well, we deserve it.

Control

If we consider the recommended Ledger live software, then here we have the ability to simultaneously work up to 18 applications of different tokens on the device. Naturally, the wallet supports a much larger number - the official website has a list of 712 cryptocurrencies, some of which are only available when using third-party software. Ledger Live Manager currently offers 70 apps for different tokens that can be installed on your device with one click.

Working with the manager is as follows - after connecting the device to the PC, enter the PIN code, enter the password in Ledger Live, and get into your personal account (Russian language is, unfortunately, not supported here either).

The set of possibilities is as follows - we can see graphs of the history of transactions with assets on different tokens in the “Portfolio” tab. The “Manager” tab displays all available applications; installing them on the device requires just a couple of clicks.

During the process, you only need to specify the account name, and after creation it will appear in the general list on the left.

Naturally, Ledger live also has separate pages for sending and receiving funds from the wallet. To do this, we need to select the desired account and provide all the details.

If you receive funds into your wallet, you will have a QR code to help simplify the procedure.

In this case, all transactions and procedures are displayed on the screen of the device itself and require confirmation by pressing buttons.

Conclusion

As a result, we can say that the Ledger Nano S crypto wallet combines several necessary properties. Firstly, this is a very high level of security and reliability of storing funds according to international standards (the only weak point concerns the 24-word verification phrase, if you lose it, you will lose everything). Secondly, the wallet allows you to perform operations with a large number of popular tokens, and do it simply and conveniently. Thirdly, there is support for third-party software, this will allow you to manage your cold wallet in a way that is more convenient for you.

Among the shortcomings, besides the possibility of losing the control phrase, one can note only the lack of a Russian-language manual.

At the moment, the Ledger Nano S has a relatively low price among competitors, and if you are considering a hardware wallet to keep your assets safe, then this is a very good option.

Advantages

Miniature, light weight, external similarity to a flash drive High standard of encryption security Isolated storage of private keys in the device’s memory Availability of two-factor authentication Full restoration of access in case of loss/theft of the device Support for a large number of crypto-assets Simple and convenient software – Ledger Live

Flaws

Lost card with passphrase = loss of all funds No manual in Russian

Security remains a key aspect when storing Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. No matter how great the antivirus is on your computer, and no matter how reliable the exchange on which you store your bitcoins or other coins/tokens is, there is still a possibility of hacking, hacker attack, scam or breakdown (in the case of personal iron).

Due to the potential risks of losing cryptocurrency, more and more investors and crypto enthusiasts are turning to hardware wallets. The Ledger Nano S device can be considered a real bestseller in this category, striking consumers with its simplicity, affordability and compactness. In this material we will tell you everything you would like to know about this device.

Cold storage

is a product of the French company Ledger, founded in 2015. This startup was the first to challenge the guys from SatoshiLabs, who are the creators of the Trezor wallet.

The company uses open source code in its work, develops its own application store (Ledger Manager) and guarantees the high security of its products. The new product was presented at the end of July 2016. The device quickly attracted the attention of many crypto enthusiasts, as it immediately supported . At the time of implementation, no other hardware wallet could boast of this. In addition to the Nano S model, Ledger also released the . Nano S is rightfully considered the most efficient hardware wallet on the market when it comes to cold storage of cryptocurrencies. Here are a number of key advantages of this model:

  • Minimum cost in comparison with competitors;
  • Increased level of protection against intruders and antiviruses;
  • Dual-chip architecture ensuring the wallet operates in a closed environment;
  • Compact and practical;
  • Support for several dozen cryptocurrencies;
  • Versatility – you can work with Ledger through devices running Windows, Linux, MAC OS.
  • Confidentiality – users do not provide any information about themselves during operation.

Ledger Nano S works according to the standard scheme for all hardware wallets. It must be connected via USB to a computer, working simultaneously both in the wallet and in a special software shell. If an attacker suddenly gains access to your PC or other device, he will still not be able to “hack” the internal security mechanism of Ledger Nano S, because operations in the wallet are carried out manually by its owner.

Ledger Nano S Wallet Review

Externally, Ledger Nano S resembles a regular USB drive. By and large, this is a Flash drive with a high level of protection, a small screen and some additional functionality. The new wallet comes with the following configuration:

The Nano S is really small. You can put it in your pocket or even in an actual wallet. Exact dimensions: 9.8cm X 1.8cm X 0.9cm. Weight is only 16.2 grams. Stainless steel and plastic are used for the body. The outer protective part is made of steel, which can be rotated.

There are two buttons on the edge of the device. The left one is responsible for moving left and up, the right one is responsible for moving right and down.

Two STM31/STM32 chips guarantee the security of the wallet and its full functionality. The device is compatible with the following operating systems: Windows (7+), Linux, Chrome OS, Mac OS. To integrate with a PC, you need to download a special application from the Chrome store.

The complete list is presented on the official Ledger website:

The wallet can store ERC20 tokens. That is, Nano S supports the “coins” of most projects.

Instructions and setup of Ledger Nano S

After unpacking the wallet and all components, connect the device to the computer using a USB cable. After this, a greeting will appear on the wallet screen.

Immediately after the Welcome inscription, another one will appear: Press Both buttons to begin – press two buttons to begin.

After performing this simple operation, the following message will appear on the screen:

The wallet asks if the device needs to be set up as new. If yes, then click on the right button. Pressing the left button is necessary when restoring the device. The next setup step is choosing a PIN code.

To increase a number, you need to press the right button; to decrease it, you need to press the left button. Confirmation of each number occurs by pressing two buttons simultaneously. The PIN code can consist of 4-8 digits. After entering all the values, confirm your actions again - enter the PIN again and hold down the two buttons.

The next stage is the most critical. You will have to record your seed – recovery phrase. The following message will first appear:

Hold down two buttons and words will begin to appear on the screen. You need to write them down in the given order. To do this, you can use the piece of paper that comes with your wallet. At the same time, it is recommended to take photographs or write down the words somewhere else. If you suddenly lose your seed, you will not be able to recover the private key and will actually lose your funds.

After recording all the words, an additional check is carried out. The wallet requests individual words from the seed from the user in random order.

If the wallet suggests the wrong word, then use the buttons to scroll through. As soon as the word with the given number from the seed is displayed on the screen, hold down two buttons.

The device is ready for use.

To fully use Ledger Nano S, you need to download Ledger Manager to your computer. This is a kind of device organizer. The download link is on the official Ledger website. It leads to the Chrome App Store. After installing the add-on, you can download one of the available wallets to your device.

To download, click on the green arrow next to the application name. The Nano S memory allows you to install no more than 5 wallets at the same time. But you can remove and install them at least 100 times if necessary - the funds will remain safe.

The Chrome online store also has Ledger Wallet Bitcoin, Ledger Wallet Ethereum, and Ledger Wallet Ripple wallets. But, for example, there is no add-on for DASH or Zcash. How to conduct transactions? Ledger Wallet Bitcoin is a universal tool that supports dozens of cryptocurrencies.

Therefore, to work with ZCASH, first select the appropriate wallet on your device, and then go to Ledger Wallet Bitcoin. Be sure to disable Browser Support to work properly with applications.

To send ZEC (or other cryptocurrency) to another address, go to the SEND tab. Next, enter the address manually, or scan the QR code with Ledger Wallet. After this, you need to confirm the transaction through the device by pressing the right button.

Before confirming the transfer, the transaction amount, recipient's address, and commission are also indicated on the screen.

When sending, you can also select the size of the commission (TRANSACTION FEES). To complete the transaction quickly, it is recommended to select HIGH.

Ledger Nano S supports software wallets like Electrum, BitGo, and so on. This means that you will be able to manage transactions in these valets through your device. For example, when installing Electrum, just select Use a Hardware Device to conduct transactions through Blue. Commissions are standard and depend on the current state of the network.

To safely shut down your device, press the right button until the Quit APP option appears. Then you need to hold down two buttons and disconnect the Nano S from the computer.

Restoring a Ledger Nano S wallet in any case requires entering a recovery phrase, that is, a seed. In fact, this is the private key with which the owner of the wallet is identified. Therefore, approach the storage of seeds responsibly. Make multiple copies in digital and physical form. Seed allows you to restore access to funds no matter what happens to your wallet: loss, breakdown, theft, software failure.

There are two ways to restore a wallet:

  • Using the new Ledger Nano S device;
  • Using a hardware wallet like Electrum, Mycelium and so on.

In both cases you need a seed. If this is a software wallet, for example, Electrum, then at the installation stage, enter the set of seed words that you wrote down during the initial setup of Nano:

If you are restoring your wallet through a device, then at the very beginning of the setup, you need to press the left button:

Next you need to enter your PIN code. It does not have to match the code you entered when you first set up. The main thing is to know the seed. And after entering the PIN, the recovery itself begins.

Start typing words.

Use the buttons to select letters. Confirmation occurs by pressing two buttons simultaneously. Usually, the ledger offers you the whole word after entering two or three letters. If it fits, then press the two buttons again to confirm.

If you accidentally entered the wrong word, then press the right button several times until the phrase Clear word appears.

How to buy Ledger Nano S

It is strictly recommended to buy the Ledger Nano S wallet on the official website of the Ledger company. Devices on trading platforms (Ebay, Avito, OLX) in theory may have third-party firmware with viruses, or the owners have access to the seed, which can lead to loss of money.

It is also not recommended to buy cheap copies and used devices. Craftsmen from East Asia have made their way to hardware cryptocurrency wallets. At this stage, there is no Russian-language firmware in the Ledger Nano S. And if you decide to install third-party software, then you yourself will be responsible for all the consequences.

Purchase instructions

Go to ledgerwallet.com. Next, go to the Products section. In the list you will see available Ledger products, including the Nano S wallet.

Simply click on the Buy Online button to begin your purchase. After that, on the wallet page, click Add to Cart. Already in the cart, enter basic information: delivery country and postal code.

Select an available delivery method. For Ukraine, Nano S is offered with free delivery within 7-14 days. Delivery conditions for purchases for Russia and other countries may differ. Available options will appear after entering the index. Check the boxes next to the user agreement and proceed to the payment process. There are three options available: Paypal, Bitcoin or VISA/Mastercard.

To ensure that your parcel passes through customs normally, after placing your order, contact Ledger support and ask to mark your wallet as a USB-Flash drive. This will allow you to avoid the bureaucratic hassle that is so beloved in the CIS. If everything goes well, the parcel will be with you in a couple of weeks.

If a manufacturing defect is discovered, the buyer has the right to receive a free replacement. To do this, you also need to contact company representatives, providing evidence of the device malfunction.

Comparison of Ledger Nano S and analogues

The cryptocurrency hardware wallet market is just beginning to emerge. In 2014, SatoshiLabs became a real pioneer in this industry with its Trezor device. And for a long time it was the only full-fledged hardware wallet on the market. But already in 2016, the Ledger company released several new products - Nano S, and a little later another competitor appeared - KeepKey.

TREZOR and Ledger Nano S are similar in many ways - simple, reliable, and support almost the same number of cryptocurrencies. KeepKey stands out in size - it is larger than its “competitors”. Perhaps this device looks more stylish in appearance. But one of the disadvantages is the lack of integration of ERC20 tokens and a smaller number of supported coins.

At one time, the Ledger Nano S was almost half the price of the Trezor and 4 times the price of the KeepKey. It is still the cheapest option on the market, but in terms of the pace of development and level of developer support, it is perhaps the best. Therefore, against the backdrop of demand, the price also increased.

Benefits of the Ledger Nano S wallet

Ledger is classified as cold. This is the most reliable and safest way.

Ledger's main advantages:

  • Safety. All Ledger wallets have a secure chip, the same as that used in bank cards and other highly secure devices. The proprietary BOLOS operating system is used. Private (closed) keys can never be extracted from the device. Representatives of the company do not have access to them, since they are created locally on the device and are not transferred anywhere. The device also controls the integrity of the firmware using cryptographic certification. All transactions are carried out in a secure environment and are confirmed by a PIN code.
  • Simplicity. Only two buttons and a display are used for control. The Ledger Live application has also been created to manage crypto assets, check balances, set up a cold wallet and other functions. You need to download the application from the official website ledger.com.
  • Recovery. If Ledger Nano S is lost, control over the cryptocurrency can always be restored thanks to a 24-word mnemonic phrase (seed). The kit comes with a piece of paper where these words need to be written and kept in a safe place (put in a safe).
  • Integration with other cryptocurrency wallets: Electrum, Bitgo, Mycelium, Copay, MyEherWallet and others.
  • PIN code. Whenever connecting to a computer, you must enter a code consisting of 4–8 digits.

The ForkLog editors got their hands on the new Ledger Nano S - so far the only full-fledged hardware wallet we know of that supports not only bitcoins, but also Ethereum.

Nano S is a continuation of the line of hardware wallets produced by the French company. The company's new flagship product was released on July 29 this year, and the stated price is 58 euros excluding VAT.

Equipment

Manufacturers of Nano S do not betray themselves, so the device traditionally looks like a regular flash drive. However, this time you need to use the USB cable that comes with the wallet to connect to your computer.

In addition, the kit includes: a thick envelope with two cards: instructions and a data recovery sheet; Accessories: neck lanyard, phone clip and key ring. It is noteworthy that the package no longer includes a security card with a custom encryption, unlike the previous version of the Ledger Nano hardware wallet.

Settings

According to the device configuration instruction card, the first time you launch the Ledger Nano S, you need to go to start.ledgerwallet.com and follow the instructions on the website.

Users are asked to first select the appropriate device from the list, and then proceed to the initial setup or install one of the available wallet applications.

Let's consider the first option. In the menu that opens we will see more detailed instructions. The first step is to connect the device to the computer and press both keys on the hardware wallet body at once to launch the configuration, and then enter the desired PIN code.

Using the control keys turned out to be intuitive: the user sees arrows and can use the key on the corresponding side of the screen. To confirm each digit of the code, you need to press two keys at the same time (hereinafter, pressing two keys at once means moving to the next step, so if we don’t know what to do, press both).

After saving the PIN code from the screen, you will need to read the 24 words necessary to restore the wallet and write them down on the appropriate card included in the package or in any other secluded place.

By the way, the device cannot be set up without confirming the position of two random words from a list in a common phrase, so even as part of the test run we had to write down every word.

The final stage of setup was the installation of Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets for the Chrome browser. As noted in the manual, it is absolutely not necessary that the computer be uncompromised, because all confirmations take place only if you have a hardware wallet and a correctly entered PIN code, bypassing the computer.

Launch

To launch the wallet, you need to click on the icon of the corresponding application in the chrome://apps browser tab, and also select the corresponding menu item in the menu of the Ledger Nano S device connected to the computer.

The design of the Bitcoin wallet app for Ledger devices has not visibly changed since the previous review.

In addition, as in the earlier version, the ability to download and store the blockchain and/or connect to your own node is not available, so users are forced to limit themselves to four standard block explorers to choose from:

Ethereum and Ethereum Classic support

However, the most interesting innovation of Ledger Nano S is its support for Ethereum. Thus, Ledger is slightly ahead of its competitors from Trezor, who are also actively developing a wallet for the second largest cryptocurrency by capitalization.

By the way, when launching the application, the user has the opportunity to choose which Ethereum blockchain to use, because the wallet is suitable for storing not only ETH tokens, but also ETC.

However, the wallet is not visually very different from a Bitcoin wallet, except that it contains no settings at all. The three main menu buttons are responsible for the current balance, sending and address for receiving funds.

Security Ledger Nano S

An important element of the positioning of Ledger products is security against hacking. At least the previous version of the wallet took first place in the ranking this spring, although it scored only 50 out of 100 points during the evaluation.

As you have already noticed, the new Ledger Nano S is equipped with a display and control buttons. This allows you to take advantage of an additional authentication factor directly from the device, i.e. allows you to set and enter security data without going through your computer, thereby providing protection against phishing. This was the main improvement from a security point of view. Wherein:

1. Device data is erased if you enter the wrong PIN code three times in a row. Because the code is entered directly from the device, the developers eliminated the need to reboot the Ledger Nano S after each unsuccessful attempt to enter the pin. However, in order to avoid permanent data loss, it is possible to restore the wallet using a mnemonic phrase.

2. The mnemonic phrase for recovery is 24 words in the correct order. The phrase is generated directly on the device (and not in an application on the computer, as in previous versions), shown on the device and must be written down in a secluded place or on a card.

To use a mnemonic phrase during recovery, you will have to enter all 24 words on the device using two buttons on the case. In order to simplify the task, the manufacturer has provided the ability for the user to select a word from a list of options after entering the first 3-4 letters.

According to the developers, the hardware wallet application data is stored on a secure element inside the device (model: ). At the same time, a significant part of the code (primarily software for wallets) is publicly available on GitHub. Gradually, the company plans to open more and more information about the code, leaving hidden only parts with partner software related to the functioning of the hardware (processor initialization, memory, etc.).

In addition, the new device is supposed to be theoretically compatible with Mycelium and Electrum wallets.

Alternatives:

The Ledger company has been specializing in the production of hardware Bitcoin wallets for several years, and in early March of this year the company entered a new level by releasing its own operating system based on distributed ledger technology called Blockchain Open Ledger Operating System (BOLOS). The new OS powers the next generation of hardware wallets, Ledger Blue, allowing them to be used as personal security devices.
