Every computer user, especially those who actively use social networks, has wondered: what are special characters and where to find them on the keyboard? The answer to this question is not something complicated. The thing is that the keyboard displays only frequently used symbols: letters, punctuation marks, arithmetic operations.

But there are many other symbols in the world. And to use them, you need to know some concepts. Such characters are called special. Their difference is that they are more comic than truly useful.

How to enter special characters from the keyboard?

First, let’s look at the simplest and most understandable input of special characters that are already located on the device’s keyboard. To do this, hold down the Shift key and select the desired symbol.

But do not forget that for convenience, the symbols are separated from each other by keyboard layouts. Therefore, pay attention to the location of the sign relative to the main one.

We use special characters when creating passwords

Many users have wondered how to create a strong password. To do this, you don’t need to create huge sets of different letters, numbers and punctuation marks; just use an unusual icon. So how do you use special characters on your keyboard for a password?

To use a special character when entering a password, you must enable NumLock. After this, you should hold down the Alt key and “+”, then type the required set of characters and get the character we need. But in the password itself it will not be registered as a special character, but will be written in the encoding necessary for this.

Using Unicode on the Windows 10 keyboard

To use special characters on the Windows 10 keyboard, you need to go to the taskbar and request a table in the search bar. And after that launch this application.

In the table that opens, you can select a font. To copy a symbol, double-click on it and click “Copy” in the bottom line. You can also select the character set language.

Enter special characters using the keyboard

The most practical way to type characters is a combination of the Alt key and the desired Unicode. Special characters on the Alt keyboard will be discussed in the table below.

But before you learn about them, you need to understand the principle of entering these characters. To enter the character we need, press the Alt key, then press “+” on the right side of the keyboard and type the numeric command in which the desired character is encrypted.

Finally

There are many symbols in the world that computer users need to use for their purposes. It is impossible to know all of them. After all, humanity over its centuries-old history has created more than a million different codes and other types of information encoded in images, but there are tables of special characters that are available to all users.

These signs have a huge scope, so many will have to deal with them. Entering special characters from the keyboard is not difficult. The main thing is to be able to use the capabilities of your device, and this will allow you to use various special characters for your own purposes.

There are many more existing symbols - and these are not only letters, numbers, mathematical and punctuation signs, and many others - than there are keys on a computer keyboard. Microsoft employees who developed the Windows system solved this problem by assigning each character a unique code, which is entered using the Alt key.

To view the list of all existing symbols, go to the Start menu and then:
All programs -> Accessories -> Utilities -> Symbol table
As a result, a table of characters in Unicode will open.

For reference: Unicode is a character encoding standard that allows you to represent the characters of almost all written languages. Unicode was originally created to eliminate encoding errors.

To convert the table into an encoding convenient for you, you need to check the box next to “Additional viewing options” and use the drop-down menu to select the required character set (“Cyrillic” for the Russian language).

Alt codes
To dial an Alt code, you need to hold down the Alt key and press the indicated numbers of the code one by one, after which the Alt key is released. The symbol will appear after releasing the key.

HTML mnemonics
In addition to Alt codes, the table contains HTML mnemonics.

A mnemonic is a coded representation of a character in HTML that begins with an ampersand "&" and ends with a semicolon ";".

Accordingly, in HTML, for example, the “greater than” symbol can be written in two ways:
> - like a regular symbol
> - as a mnemonic code;

A symbol can only be displayed if it is presented in the font being used. Otherwise, you will see a rectangle, a question mark, and something else indicating that there is no image for the specified symbol.
Now this problem is successfully solved thanks to plug-in fonts.

When working with text on a computer, even advanced users often encounter various problems. For example, if you need to print the letters of the Greek alphabet. They are often used in mathematics, chemistry, physics and other exact sciences.

Unfortunately, the keyboard does not have the alpha symbol or other characters of the Greek alphabet. However, you can still insert them. But how? Let's try to find the answer to this question. Even novice users can easily master typing Greek on a PC. The proposed methods will be discussed using the example of working with MS Word.

Inserting a symbol

The symbols “alpha”, “omega” and other symbols of the Greek alphabet cannot be found on any modern keyboard. However, inserting them into the text will not be difficult.

The first scenario is to work with inserting special characters. A similar function is available in all versions of Word.

To insert any special character that is not on the keyboard panel, it is recommended to do the following:

  1. Go to a text editor.
  2. Place the pointer cursor at the position where you need to place the corresponding sign.
  3. Open “Insert” - “Special characters”.
  4. A small menu with a long list will appear on the screen.
  5. Double-click on a particular symbol. It is enough to look for the desired element with your eyes. In our case, it is recommended to switch to the “Greek...” set. This makes the alpha symbol easier to detect.
  6. Close the Paste Special menu when you are finished working with the service.

This is only one of the possible methods for solving the problem. Users are able to find not only the symbols “alpha”, “beta”, “gamma”, but also other components of the Greek alphabet in the specified Word menu item. It is very comfortable.

Copy and paste

The following technique is used extremely rarely, but it is still recommended to remember it. You can find a special character in some ready-made text, and then copy it into your document.

Instructions for using this method boil down to the following manipulations:

  1. Open a browser and use it to find any text that contains Greek letters - symbols of quantities.
  2. Select one or another character with the cursor.
  3. Press Ctrl + C on your keyboard. This command will copy information to the clipboard.
  4. Go to your text editor and press Ctrl + V. The text insertion operation will be completed in a split second.

This method, as we have already said, is almost never found in practice. Therefore, you should not rely on it. The “alpha” symbol is not so easy to find in finished text on the Internet. But at any time the user can print it himself.

Keyboard shortcut

How exactly? Apart from the special insert in Word, there are two more solutions to the problem. The characters "alpha", "omega" and others can be inserted using ASCII codes. The main problem is finding information about the digital designations of special characters.

A guide to using ASCII codes in Word to print the Greek alphabet has the following interpretation:

  1. Get started with a text editor.
  2. Move the print indicator to the place where you need to insert a special character.
  3. Press the "Alt" button on your keyboard. It doesn't matter - right or left.
  4. Enter the ASCII code of a particular character. Let's take a look at some of the digital symbols below.
  5. Release the pressed keys.

Important! When typing a specialized code, the Alt key must be pressed. Before starting the operation, you will have to turn on Num Lock and use the appropriate part of the keyboard to type.

Here are some ASCII codes for Greek (lowercase) icons:

  • 945 - alpha symbol;
  • 946 - beta;
  • 947 - gamma;
  • 948 - delta;
  • 969 - omega.

Now it won’t be difficult to print basic Greek characters. Even a schoolboy can cope with the task.

We use Unicode

The “alpha” symbol cannot be detected on the keyboard. But if desired, the user can use Unicode to print the corresponding character. This is a fairly common technique, but not everyone knows about it.

To work with Unicode you will need:

  1. Place the print cursor at the location where the special character appears in the future.
  2. Type a special Unicode responsible for the designation of a particular character.
  3. Press Alt and X (English letter) at the same time.

The described manipulations will lead to the printing of the “alpha” symbol or any other character. It all depends on the specified hexadecimal code.

Here are the Unicodes used for some lowercase Greek letters:

  • 3B1 - alpha;
  • 3B2 - beta;
  • 3B3 - gamma;
  • 3A9 - omega.

What is alt code? Alt code is the characters that are displayed when you press the key combination on the keyboard Alt + X, where X is a set of numbers (a specific number) on the NumPad. NumPAd is a block of numbers on the keyboard, usually located on the right. Alto symbols on a PC with operating Windows systems are not available when using a regular keyboard. They can only be called using additional commands. Hold down the ALT button and enter a number in the decimal number system. I hope everything is clear here. The table of Alt codes will help you navigate and find the desired symbol.

Attention! Enter numbers on the side Num-pad keyboard.
