Mobile device batteries differ from each other in their capacity and technology. They provide the electrical charge necessary for their functioning.

Just recently, the market for budget Android tablets was completely occupied by handicraft Chinese manufacturers. However, brands caught on in time and, fortunately for consumers, began to produce high-quality inexpensive models. One example of good budget tablet can serve Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is a tablet, which, in fact, is a simplified and, accordingly, cheaper version of the tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.

No matter how strange it may sound, Samsung's desire to save on the body has finally pushed it to the right technical solutions. The sides and back panel of the tablet are a single piece made of absolutely non-marking semi-matte plastic. The buttons are also made from it.

In addition to white, black, yellow, pink and turquoise colors are also available.
The edging of the device is smooth, while the back panel has a leather-like texture. True, it is not as tactilely pleasant as the similar texture in the Note series, since the plastic is not covered with Soft Touch, but, on the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is much less easily soiled. Overall, the body feels much better made than other 3rd generation Tab tablets, with no cheap gloss or peeling painted or varnished bezels. This means that with more or less careful treatment, the tablet will look good even after a year, and not just in the first seconds after removing the films.

In front we are greeted by a display covered with an unknown material with a simple oleophobic coating. Under the screen you can find touch buttons – “Back” and “Menu”, as well as a mechanical “Home” button. It should be noted that front camera and there are no sensors here, but what did you want, you had to somehow make the tablet cheaper. On the right side there is an on/off button, as well as volume rockers, and 3.5 mm on the top. a headphone jack and a micro-USB connector for charging, on the left there is a slot for a micro-SD memory card, on the bottom there is a microphone, and on the back there is the main camera and speaker. In terms of ergonomics, the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is doing well, because thanks to its small size and weight, the tablet can be comfortably held with one hand and carried in your outerwear pocket.
A few words about the camera – it takes photos in 2 megapixel resolution. and lacks autofocus, so the pictures are of mediocre quality. The video is recorded in 480p - everything seems to hint that it is better not to use the camera unless absolutely necessary.
The display of the gadget has a diagonal of 7 inches, resolution of 1024x600 pixels, pixel density of 169ppi. The pixelation of the display is quite significant, but in fact it only manifests itself when reading small text; in all other cases, the clarity of the picture is enough for more or less comfortable work. The screen is made according to TFT technology, the color rendition is a little faded and the colors lack saturation. The angular views of the display are small; when tilted, the picture is significantly distorted, and the readability of information disappears. The brightness range is narrow; the backlight intensity is not automatically adjusted due to the lack of a light sensor, so the slider in the notification panel will be very useful.

The device is powered by a dual-core Marvell PXA 986 processor with a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz, the video accelerator is Vivante GC 1000. The RAM is -1 GB, the built-in memory is 8 GB, which is quite good for an affordable solution, and the storage can be easily expand by installing a memory card. The performance of the tablet is not the highest, as eloquently evidenced by the results of synthetic tests. The shell works quite smoothly, but there is no confidence in the constancy of this speed.

New games work on the tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is fine only at medium and low settings, but old hits like Subway Surfex are quite comfortable to play. Those who want to play more recent games will have to reduce the number of effects and play around with the cache. I'm glad that at least office applications They don't slow down and movies play normally. The same applies to Internet browsing.
The device is powered by a 3600 mAh battery, which lasts for several days when used occasionally.
The software basis of the tablet is operating system– Android 4.2.2, on top of which the proprietary TouchWiz interface is installed. Since there are almost no sensors in the device, there is very little additional functionality - there is no eye tracking system, no gestures, or remote control. I'm glad that the manufacturer at least left the two-window mode, which is indispensable in working conditions. But apart from it, there is nothing special in the firmware. The style and organization are similar to those of other Samsung devices.
The conclusion can be drawn as follows: the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite pleases only with its body and battery life, while its performance and display hardly satisfy the needs of modern buyers. However, this device has one significant advantage - Samsung price Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is less than $200, which is almost half the price of a simple Tab 3 7.0 with almost complete hardware similarity, which makes this tablet one of the most optimal budget solutions among devices from well-known manufacturers. Therefore, if you want to buy the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite for reading, working with documents and watching movies, you will not regret it, since you will get fairly good quality at an affordable price.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite (T110) is the first Android tablet from the South Korean company with an ultra-low price of $150. The tester will show whether Samsung engineers managed to achieve the desired balance between price and functionality. We received a completely white copy for review. But there are versions with a back panel in yellow, turquoise and pink flowers, and also completely black.

Design and equipment

On the right side of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite there is a screen lock key and a volume rocker; on the right is a slot for a microSD memory card covered with a plug; on top – microUSB and MiniJack connectors; Below is the microphone hole. On the back panel, in addition to the camera lens, there is a lone speaker (it could be louder). The tablet body is almost impossible to twist, and the textured back panel made of matte plastic allows you to save on the purchase of a case.

In addition to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite itself, the box contains only Charger and a USB-microUSB cable (in our case, both white). From additional accessories The first thing you need to buy is a memory card, because the tablet has only 8 GB of built-in memory, about a third of which is occupied by the operating system.

Screen and camera

The display of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is seven-inch, with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels, made using TFT technology. He just calls it the universal word “TFT” Samsung company both high-quality PLS matrices and mediocre TN ones. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite has the second option: color reproduction and maximum brightness are generally good, but the viewing angles are not wide enough. When you deviate to the right (if you hold the tablet vertically), the image brightens significantly; when you deviate to the left, on the contrary, it darkens.

Due to the low pixel density, the image appears grainy, so you often have to resort to scaling when viewing web pages. The screen, although covered with plastic, is not tempered glass, it shouldn't scratch too much. Touches on the screen are processed clearly, but there is no oleophobic coating.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite has only one camera, and not the front one, which is typical for many tablet PCs, but the rear one, which lacks autofocus. Maximum resolution for photographs – 2 MP, for video – 640x480 pixels. The limitation is more likely marketing than functional, since the installed processor is quite capable of writing 720p video. The quality of the photos is tolerable for a tablet.

Performance

The heart of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is the Marvell PXA986 single-chip system. It has two ARM Cortex-A9 cores with a frequency of 1.2 GHz, which are a little faster than the now widespread Cortex-A7 (MediaTek chips), but at the same time more voracious in terms of battery. RAM - 1 GB, part of which is consumed by the integrated graphics accelerator.

The Vivante GC1000 video core is not very powerful and, worst of all, extremely rare. You may have problems running some 3D applications on it. For example, we were unable to run the Epic Citadel benchmark. At the same time, the games Dead Trigger 2 and Asphalt 8 launched without problems and produced more or less comfortable FPS at medium graphics settings. Under load, the tablet heats up slightly.

Software and autonomy

The operating system installed on the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite Android system 4.2.2 s graphical shell TouchWiz and a set of branded Samsung applications. Will there be an update to 4.4 or more? new version, not yet known. The menu animation is not “reactive”, but quite smooth. A nice bonus is preinstalled full version application package Polaris Office for working with electronic documents.

The autonomy indicators of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite, although not record-breaking, are very, very good. The low screen resolution allows you to view HD video in the MX Player program (hardware decoding) at 50 percent brightness and Wi-Fi on for up to 9 hours. Read e-books V Cool Reader at 30 percent brightness and with Wi-Fi turned off, you can get up to 12.5 hours.

The bottom line

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite generally justifies its price, namely $150. Yes, for this money you can buy tablets with a quad-core processor and an HD screen, and not only from B-brands. But time battery life they will most likely have it worse. Thanks to the different color options and durable design, the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is perfect for children, for example: they will have to work hard to break this “toy”. In addition, children will appreciate the presence of a rear camera, with which they can learn the basics of photography. But the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is not suitable for the role of a “grandmother’s tablet,” since the front camera is critical for this audience for video communication with friends and relatives.

5 reasons to buy Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite

  • five colors;
  • durable and wear-resistant housing;
  • decent indicators of autonomy;
  • affordable price, especially for the “Galaxy”;
  • cool processor name, consonant with the Marvel Comics publishing house :)

3 reasons not to buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite

  • low display resolution and small viewing angles;
  • mediocre processor speed and rare graphics accelerator;
  • Lack of front camera for video calls.

Most cheap tablet Korean manufacturer

Against the backdrop of the presentation of a giant Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, new line Tab Pro, various wearable electronics and other advanced solutions, Samsung’s entry into the ultra-budget tablet market went virtually unnoticed. In the bottom price segment Koreans have been developing a line for a long time Galaxy Tab, but this doesn't seem to be enough. The income of modest Chinese manufacturers does not allow one to sleep peacefully, and Samsung will try to take its own piece of this pie with the help of the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite.

If you are not put off by the fact that a TN matrix is installed in samsung tablet, then the remaining characteristics are unlikely to scare off. Everything is minimal, there is no front camera.

Design

We received the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite without a box, so let's jump straight into the design of the tablet. In addition to the all-black solution, models with a white front and multi-colored rear panels - blue-green, lemon, white and peach - are available on the market. But we received a strict black modification for testing.

The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is almost a copy of the regular Galaxy Tab 3, which is to be expected.

The front panel lacks both a camera lens and a brightness sensor. This would have made it possible to shorten the tablet, but the manufacturer chose not to waste time on this. Still, it’s a budget model, there’s no need for additional costs. However, in terms of width, the Tab 3 Lite turned out to be slightly smaller than its competitors from the table.

Below are three standard Samsung buttons- touch to open the context menu and return, as well as mechanical to exit to the main screen.

The plastic rear panel has a non-marking and non-slip “leather” texture, but it is not as nicely made as that of older models. There is also no “seam” along the edge. In the middle is the camera lens, and next to it is the speaker hole.

The central baffle of the speaker is slightly raised so that it does not rest against the surface of the table. The implementation of the speaker is perhaps one of the most significant external differences Tab 3 Lite from the original Galaxy Tab 3, which had two speakers, and they were placed on the bottom edge. Maximum volume The tablet's dynamics are below average, and it starts to wheeze.

The Micro-USB connector, usually located at the bottom, is placed on the top edge, next to the headphone jack. This is somewhat unusual.

There was only a microphone left at the bottom. IN in this case it's not particularly useful, but in the 3G version of the tablet you can make calls, and this logical, “telephone” microphone placement will come in handy. But in the photographs of the 3G modification there is no front speaker, so it will be difficult to listen to the interlocutor.

On the left, a spring-loaded memory card slot is covered with a plug.

On the right are mechanical buttons - a switch and a volume rocker. Despite their narrow size, they turned out to be very comfortable due to their short and precise stroke.

We were pleased with the build quality of the tablet. It’s difficult to find fault with anything: all the parts fit perfectly together, and no squeaking occurs when you try to bend it. As for the aesthetic side of the issue... the Korean manufacturer is not famous for its original design at all, and it would hardly experiment with a budget model.

Screen

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. Judging by the reflection of objects The anti-glare properties of the screen are worse than those ofGoogle Nexus 7 (2013)(further we compare it with him). For clarity, here are photographs in which the white surface is reflected in the switched off screens of both tablets (Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite - on the right, then they can be distinguished by the size and presence of on-screen buttons on the Nexus 7):

The gray surface of the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite screen confirms what was written above. The reflection in the screen triples, which suggests the presence of an air gap between the surface of the matrix and the outer glass. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (not very effective, worse than Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed more easily and appear at a slower rate than with regular glass.

When manually controlling the brightness, its maximum value was about 320 cd/m², and the minimum - 14 cd/m². The maximum value is not very high, and given the weak anti-glare properties, the image on the screen will be difficult to see in bright daylight. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. Automatic adjustment There is no brightness from the light sensor. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering.

In this screen it is installed TN type matrix. The micrograph demonstrates a typical TN structure (or rather lack of structure) of subpixels:

For comparison, you can see microphoto gallery screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles in the vertical direction (here and below with portrait orientation) , but with the slightest deviation to the right, dark shades are inverted, and with a deviation to the left, light shades are inverted. For comparison, here are photos in which the same images are displayed on the screens of the Nexus 7 and the device under test, with the brightness of both screens set to approximately 200 cd/m². Test picture perpendicular to the screens:

It can be seen that the colors on the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite's screen are noticeably distorted. And a white field:

We note good uniformity of brightness and color tone on both screens. The brightness of the white field decreases faster when tilted in any direction than on the Nexus 7. For example, when tilted to the right:

Now the test picture is at an angle of approximately 45° to the screen plane with a vertical deviation:

It can be seen that the screen of the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite at this angle has become even slightly better in color balance. Things are worse when deviating to the left:

The blockage in the lights is very strong. And it’s really bad when deviating to the right:

The brightness drops dramatically, the colors turn inside out. The black field does not brighten very much when the gaze deviates from the perpendicular to the screen in any direction, for example, when deviating to the right:

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is not ideal, since there are areas with a slightly increased brightness of the black field:

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is acceptable - about 730:1 . The response time for the black-white-black transition is 12 ms (8 ms on + 4 ms off), the transition between halftones of gray 25% and 75% (by the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 36 ms. Compared to IPS used in mobile devices, this TN panel is relatively fast. The gamma curve, constructed using 32 points with equal intervals based on the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal any blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.44, which is higher than the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power-law dependence:

Color gamut narrower than sRGB:

Apparently, the matrix’s light filters mix the components with each other. The spectra confirm this:

This technique allows you to increase the brightness of the screen with the same energy consumption for backlighting. As a result, the colors of images - drawings, photographs and films - oriented to the sRGB space (and the vast majority of them) have reduced saturation. There is no shade balance on the gray scale as such - the color temperature is higher than the standard 6500 K and varies greatly from shade to shade:

The deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) on a white field is large and varies greatly from hue to hue, which also worsens the visual perception of color balance:

The maximum brightness of this screen is low, the anti-glare properties are weak, as a result, the comfort of use on a clear day outside is highly questionable. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. The only advantages of the screen include no screen flickering. There are many disadvantages: typical TN distortions of colors and brightness of shades when the gaze deviates from perpendicular to the screen plane, narrow color gamut, disgusting balance of shades of gray. Inexpensive screen option on a TN matrix.

operating system

operating room Samsung system Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is practically no different from the one installed on Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1- the same Android 4.2.2 in the proprietary TouchWiz shell. The main difference is the appearance multi-window mode. In this case, up to two applications are supported, which is quite enough given the available screen size

Besides Play Market, there is a proprietary application store Samsung Apps. The list of preinstalled software is formed accordingly by standard Google apps and Samsung. In addition, there are several third-party free programs. Content transmission via DLNA is supported. Under an agreement with Dropbox, 50 GB of cloud storage is provided for two years after activation.

It took us some time to get used to the screen Samsung keyboard, or rather, to its small buttons and large gaps between them:

The operating system runs mostly smoothly, but the animation sometimes slows down, especially in the Play Market. Due to the lack of updates, I used for tests basic version firmware. Turning on the tablet takes approximately 28 seconds. Of eight gigabytes internal memory The system takes almost three, leaving the user with approximately 5.13 GB. But the microSD connector is in place, so for a budget tablet without ambition there is no disaster here.

Platform and performance

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite uses the same single-chip system as the regular seven-inch Galaxy Tab 3 - the Marvell PXA986.

Its characteristics are as follows:

  • CPU: 2 ARM Cortex-A9 cores (ARMv7-A architecture) with a maximum frequency of 1.2 GHz
  • GPU: Vivante GC1000 @ 800 MHz
  • OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenVG 1.1 support
  • RAM: LPDDR2-SDRAM
  • Supports 1080p video recording/playback, cameras up to 16 MP

The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite has 1 GB of RAM. By modern standards, the number of cores and their operating frequency corresponds to the budget level. Unfortunately, this may not bring the battery life bonus since it uses Cortex-A9 cores rather than Cortex-A7. The graphics processor can also disappoint, since Vivante solutions are not particularly popular on the market and, moreover, one of the basic modifications is installed here.

But first, we'll evaluate processor performance using JavaScript tests:

It seems that Marvell's lag behind Mediatek in Mozilla Kraken is due to the difference in frequency, and the MT8125 does not receive any dividends from the additional pair of cores. SunSpider confirms this. Whatever one may say, the benefits of multiple cores in mobile devices are questionable. The superiority of Google Octane is due to the browser.

Next to the other seven-inch tablets we've tested, the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite looks very unconvincing. And the lag behind similarly priced solutions on budget Mediatek platforms is, on average, 30-40%. The result in Antutu X is almost the same:

MobileXPRT confirmed the lag of the Marvell platform. Note the low score on the Gallery Scrolling subtest.

The budget Tab 3 Lite is behind all competitors, but when used, such a difference is unnoticeable:

The final non-gaming test, SuperPi, does not present any surprises.

Let's move on to gaming benchmarks. Low expectations from PXA988 were immediately confirmed: based on Unreal Engine 3 Epic Citadel benchmark did not run.

In 3DMark Ice Storm, the system on the Marvell chip lags even behind budget Mediatek. As for the GFXBenchmark T-Rex HD scene, it turned out to be too tough for our hero:

At the average quality level in Basemark X, our hero outperformed the Ritmix tablet, which can be considered an achievement.

Gaming benchmarks confirm the failure of the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite as a gaming tablet. Let's check the performance of real games.

More than half of the games in our test set had problems. Which is not surprising.

Video playback test

To test the display of video files on the screen of the device itself, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “ Methodology for testing video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"). Screenshots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped determine the nature of the output of frames of video files with various parameters: Resolution (1280x720 (720p) and 1920x1080 (1080p) pixels) and frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps) varied. In the tests, we used the MX Player video player in the “Hardware+” mode. The test results are summarized in the table:

FineNo 720/25p FineNo 720/24p FineNo

Note: If in both columns Uniformity And Passes Green ratings are given, this means that, most likely, when watching films, artifacts caused by uneven alternation and frame skipping will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect the viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems related to the playback of the corresponding files.

The intervals between frames (or groups of frames) alternate slightly unevenly in most cases, 50 and 60 fps files play back with dropped frames, and 1080p files at 60 fps do not play back at all. When playing video files with a resolution of 720p or 1080p and an aspect ratio of 16:9, the image of the actual video file is displayed exactly along the wide border of the screen. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - all gradations of shades are displayed in shadows and highlights.

To decode AC3 tracks in MX Player, the “Hardware+” codec is used. Our hero, of course, is not suitable for demanding game scenarios, but he copes well with displaying video.

Wireless network support

Here the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite's problems only grow. Perhaps they relate exclusively to the test sample, but it’s worth taking note of them. The Wi-Fi receiver on the tablet is very unstable. Communication was constantly lost even at a distance of 3-4 meters in open space from a very powerful router with three external antennas. The problem was solved in a trivial way - by placing the tablet close to the router. But even in this case, the connection did not always work, and the game N.O.V.A fell victim to this. 3.

In addition to the dubious single-band Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, the tablet supports Bluetooth version 4, as well as GPS/GLONASS. Connecting to satellites outdoors takes a few minutes, and indoors the connection is quickly lost. The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is deprived of the proprietary infrared port, which Samsung continues to install in its tablets. The USB OTG mode was also unavailable.

Cameras

Not only the infrared port was cut, but also the front camera. The rear has a resolution of 2 megapixels. For such a resolution, the picture is not so bad, but the lack of megapixels is clearly felt:

The captured text is legible over almost the entire area:

Maximum resolution videos(video: MPEG-4 (Base Media), 2553 Kbps, 640x480, 23,912 fps; audio: AAC (LC), 64 Kbps, 48 kHz, 1 channel) corresponds to the normal resolution of the front camera. In contrast to the number of pixels, the frame rate is at a good level.

Autonomous operation

We were only able to test the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite in reading and video modes because, as mentioned above, Epic Citadel did not work on the tablet. It would have been possible to enable the battery test in GFXBenchmark, but it also turned off after some time after launch. The tablet has a power saving mode available, but it only limits the maximum processor frequency (which is already low) and the power level of the screen (apparently due to brightness), so the table shows the results with the power saving mode turned off.

The graph of battery consumption readings is almost uniform, there are no sudden drops.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite copes well with its role in reading mode, significantly outperforming its cost-effective Cortex-A7 competitors. But when playing video, battery life is reduced significantly. Limiting the maximum processor frequency did not save the situation: the difference was several minutes.

Full Samsung charger The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite took us almost five hours to complete. A third-party adapter was used because the tablet arrived without accessories. From Computer Tab 3 Lite cannot charge.

conclusions

Samsung saved on everything. An outdated single-chip system, a low-quality speaker, the absence of a front camera and an infrared port, a small battery capacity and internal memory, and most importantly, the TN matrix is not best quality. Today, for the same money, it is easy to buy much more interesting devices that are inferior to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite only in the popularity of the manufacturer.
